I think that little bit is the best way to show how much of a unit Reacher is supposed to be. There's a reason he gets called a gorilla in so many of the books by the locals in the towns he ends up in.
The entire book series is basically this. Its just fun to watch an ass kicking machine, kick all the asses. Reacher had just put together a new unit and knew that by going to this bar, on this night, he would run into this particular unit and that this particular guy would be there and is a stickler for rules and that'd he be able to instigate a fight... he planned this fight as a bonding experience for his new unit.
This is just a bad 1980's style script writing, real life you would have 2 reactions. Reaction 1 is then realise they're 2 Majors at the table and you're going to walk away hoping that you're going to get your ass chewed out by your CO, and reaction 2 it because she is of the invite of the officer.....everyone minds their own business as they're a guest of the officer.
Now imagine if Hollywood was for once smart and chose Alan instead of Tom Cruise, how cool those movies would be... They still have the chance to make a few more movies with this epic actor 🤩
