How embarrassing for a key senator to blame China. In 2018, China had a population of 1380 million, the US only 327 million. China had a GDP of $14.2 Trillion. The us a GDP of 20.5 Trillion. China installed 51.3 GW of wind. The US installed 7.6 GW of wind. China installed 44.3 GW of Solar. The US installed 4.2 GW of solar - with 90% of the panels made in China.
So, just given the populations, the GDP, and the fact that China is developing, while the US is developed, wouldn't anyone expect to allow China to emit more CO2 than the US?? But instead China is installing 6.7 times more wind, 10.5 times more solar with 70% of the GDP and 4.2 times the population. Shame on the US. Shame! Shame! Shame!

Clean public toilets provide, it needs funds for maintenance. If a local toilet closed for sometime, then something wrong find your reasons if you got time (everyone just being too busy finding solutions to pay their own bills). @discorperted for one your assuming taxes should by definition only help the rich. Taxes can be used to incentivise certain industries for better or for worse. We as the people choose how they get used and how that money should get distributed. The politicians in office only represent who we elected to make those decisions for us. Taxes are one of or potentially the only easy and feasible solution to carbon emissions. How else is the government going to incentivise going green without outright banning something. At what point is something considered unfeaseable. An example of this is abesity. If we really wanted to, all we would have to do to fix alot of obesity is tax large fast food resturants that serve extremely cheap unhealthy food alot more. And then redistribute alot of that wealth to local farmers and local businesses. Then add the restriction that redistribution would only happen if they charged their food at a more reasonable price for basic consumers. A similar if not better price to the normally cheap fast food. Something similar for carbon taxes is not a bad idea. Its entirely feasible and is actually logistacally much better for everyone involved. Charging taxes for carbon emmisions then using the wealth accumulated for basic public services or school etc.

neither capitalism nor socialism should ever be in control: like fire and water they make great servants but poor masters. what have we learned since the Reformation? well, socialism and capitalism sure - but before we can use these we must have *The Rule of Law* and let's review what this is: the law applies to the greatest as well as the smallest, the strongest as well as the weakest - if anything it applies _more_ to the great and the strong. oh, they didn't give us that one - we beheaded some of them and fought wars all over Europe until the 20th century.
The 20th century taught us about totalitarianism: any system that *concentrates power in few hands* will soon dispense with the rule of law. Hannah Arendt said it doesn't matter what you call it - capitalism, socialism, communism, fascism - if the end result is _totalitarianism_ we're right back where we started: tyrants and a police state. Democracy? oh, yes - well, democracy is indispensable in one sense (for which totalitarians tend to dispense with it also) and that is: it allows us to remove a corrupt or inept government without force... because we did it by force several times and it's... messy. very messy. now where were we? *regulations* are just the day-to-day rules. without the rule of law and democracy you can't enforce 'em whether they're against capitalists or socialists.
Did you know? Capitalism is democracy, subject to that thing we talked about - the rule of law - essentially a group of shareholders can vote on how they would like the company to be run. This is a novel idea, very new historically speaking. Socialism is just the idea that everyone should have the same opportunity - food, clothes, shelter, education, healthcare; the basics - not a guarantee that you should share in the wealth of those who work harder, longer, smarter, faster. That part's up to you. Just a fair start.
One more principle bears mentioning and that is hereditary wealth and power. We all want to give our children and grandchildren a step up: that's only good and natural. But beyond that inheriting wealth and power is problematic - that's why we dispensed with the monarchy (well, some of us are still working on that too) you just never know what is going to pop out in the next generation: an indolent nincompoop, a selfish wastrel or a brutal psychopath are the options we particularly don't like (especially that last one) these are deficiencies in the system of inheritance.
We want some concentration of wealth and power - somebody has to build the factories and bridges and railways and satellite networks. Regulation and policy are just ways to guide things: not ways to police your fellow man as though he or she were a machine. So: you cut the particulates in half, see how that goes - ban the _known_ carcinogens, mutagens, teratogens or - because sometimes you just can't do without them - state how they will be handled. Corporations understand all this: and the way to level the playing field is simply to forbid import of products that aren't made by your rules - otherwise you're just exporting the problems.
Of course there will always be those trying to get the regulations written to favour their self: we're a selfish bunch. take a law degree. but these other people that insist "we shall ban all internal combustion engines in ten years" that is simply not reasonable. can't be done. not even close. no the world is not going to end (not at any rate from the internal combustion engine, hydrocarbons or atmospheric carbon dioxide) we need reasonable compromise. it's perfectly reasonable to tax carbon and then put the money back into the economy before the high cost of energy does too much damage; it's perfectly reasonable to plant trees and reclaim deserts and drylands: these are justifiable on the basis of conservation, we don't need apocalyptic messiahs or flash mobs. Really we don't - it reminds me far too much of those ancient tyrants (and some not so ancient)
Otherwise we shall have to tear it all down and start over. and that's messy. very messy.

Climate change is such a redundant term. The reason it is redundant is that the Earth's climate is never at rest, it's in constant flux. Every event in history occurred against the backdrop of some form of climate change. Our planet goes through these natural cycles of warming and cooling, within the last million years there has been an ice age about every 100,000. The question isn't whether the earth's climate is changing, that's obvious... It's to what degree does human activity exacerbate it. Even if we cut all carbon emissions today so that we were no longer releasing any CO2 into the atmosphere, earth's temperature would still rise as would sea levels. Natural disasters would also continue to occur. What we have to figure out is exactly how much resources we need to invest in mitigating climate change, and that is a very difficult thing to quantify.

Their insidious act of demand the banning of fossil fuels in the USA and Europe is a political one. The leftist politicians want to use the banning of fossil fuels in western countries to collapse our economy, industry and cities and to decimate our population in the severe cold winters to come due to Solar minimum while China, India and Saudi Arabia are still allowed to use fossil fuels to power their economy, industry and cities and to keep their population alive. Industrial farming of cattle is an issue. It's not beef or the cows it's the human influence on the cows. The diet being fed to cattle is not their natural diet. They are fed soy and corn which makes their manure excrete unnatural amounts of methane. Pasture raised cows do not have the same impact. The problem is this idea that meat should be cheap.

I may have rushed that comment, admittedly. It’s just not how i usually hear this topic being discussed. Typically ppl talk about de-carbonizing our processes, our economy, or transportation etc, while saying we need to reduce our fossil fuel use and emissions. He was advocating mainly for still having emissions, but just try to pull the carbon out. But that will not come close to getting us all the way there. It’s shaving around the edges. Ghg emissions is a lot more than carbon capture at power plants and pipelines. There are already some rules on this, and companies have terrible compliance, but mostly there is very limited compliance rules in place. Methane leaks from fracking wells and pipelines are a huge problem! At the same time he advocated against regulations as part of the tool kit! So he wants more of what’s not enforced, doesn’t currently work very well, doesn’t seem interested in enforcing standards to improve compliance, which will allow the argument for more wells and pipelines, while allowing companies to save public face by saying, “see we are retrofitting all our pipelines, so no reason to stop drilling/fracking, and selling natural gas”.. it’s a false narrative through and through.
I also, don’t know the details here, but if you pull carbon out of the smokestacks and such, will that take care of other harmful gases that produce diseases and high asthma?
I actually had more issues with other things the conservator witness said as well, some of that was in another comment.

These are just a few things we can do on the consumer end. The destruction of the ecosystem is the main issue. Climate Change however is a HUGE destroyer of the ecosystem. CO2 emissions cause climate change. Over consumption, bad consumption, and climate change are destroying the ecosystem. The problem with CO2 is that it accumulates in the atmosphere and ocean. In the atmosphere, it heats the earth, and changes the weather. In the ocean it acidifies the water, leading to the destruction of many populations. But, the CO2 in the atmosphere is the result of 250 years of emissions. It will not go away simply because we stop emissions. Stopping emissions just stops us making it worse. Mother nature has joined in with her emissions. This year the arctic fires were emitting as much as the entire US auto emissions. So to correct the problem, we have to remove those 250 years of emissions from the atmosphere and oceans.
But, the ecosystem can get a big boost simply by stopping beef consumption! And more boost by stopping all meat/fish consumption. Improve farming methods.

If you go to the grocery store and buy meat from industrial cattle farms, then you are contributing to the crisis.

This is ridiculous and not based on anything. All over the country many large cities have passed “GND-style” laws to address some area of their economy, be it energy, buildings, transportation etc. Some states have done the same. These are all tailored regulations and investments to the specific local needs.. of course they are, they only have local jurisdiction and they have their local population to consider. Every state or city has its own energy mix, their own transportation mix, their own heating and cooling concerns, population estimates. There is no one size fits all.. what is he taking about?!? The truth is that there isn’t a GND yet, there is a belief that we need to commit to one. That’s it. What it looks like is completely to be determined, and part of its goals are targeted investments in front line communities and communities that need jobs. Its very far from one size fits all...
But you have to have a federal govt plan, you need access to the vast amount of federal money, you need to have increasing nationals standards to incentive policy, innovation, action at all levels, carrots and sticks.. like every effective govt policy. The federal govt has vast resources that local areas do not. Hey small town US, please address all the energy, building and transportation needs of your citizens while reducing emissions on a continual basis with your current budget short fall, your states shrinking population for a tax base, and your lack of Local industry. .. might be better to have a national response instead, or in additon!
“The fact of the matter is, we can not regulate our way out of climate change” Well it goes without saying that DUH, we need to invest, innovate, and regulate, and work on personal contributions. But if he is advocating for basically leaving regulation off the table, how does expect these things to happen:
1)companies and public buildings will just “innovate” their way to an ever increasing energy efficiency on their own will
      2) all new buildings will have always be created to the highest standards with no mandate to do so
3)100s of millions of gas fueled cars will simply stop being there and an electric fleet of cars will just appear that everyone will have access to somewhere between 2030 and 2050
      4) businesses will constantly upgrade their energy efficiency, even if it’s not incentivized by govt action
      5) public transportation will grow at a rapid paste to take more cars off the road quicker and increase their own technologies just because people want it to be so, the market won’t decide that single cars are cheaper and can afford a bigger payout for car companies..
I could honestly go forever and with much more details.. but it just boggles the mind.. the talking points of this kid have no bearing on the reality of the action that needs to take place.

Nuclear has actually become very safe simply because people are so afraid of another chernobyl. The nuclear industry has had to do the most innovation in order to gain the confidence of the public again.
Nuclear is actually so safe now that it accounts for 0.07 deaths per terawatt hour. For perspective, gas accounts for 2.82 deaths, biomass for 4.83, oil is 18.43, coal is 24.62, and brown coal is 32.72.
Nkw the key thing is that we don't need to power the whole world with nuclear. But in order for renewable to work, we must have a mixture of nuclear. And as renewable technology gets better, there will be a time when we don't even need nuclear.

But, if you are the average driver, you will cover over 10,000 miles a year in a 25 mpg car, emitting 19.4 pounds for every 25 miles, or 3.88 tons per year. If you live and eat, your emissions are likely more than double that due to heating and/or cooling emissions, and consumption. We need immediate atmospheric CO2 reduction. .... But, then planting trees would be like a term life insurance plan. Better than a poke in the eye with a burning stick.

Why are we listening to kids when there are scientists? Where are the actual climate experts? Oh, that's right. The scientists you had before congress did not suggest panic...

It becomes really tiresome to listen to all this finger pointing to china, i mean seriously stop looking at what others are doing and look at what you can do, set the example. Much more can be done. Stop using fossil fuels. Change the fuel our cars use, we are running out of oil.

Why not have a debate; scientists for and against, nationally/globally televised. Oh, that's right, they don't want a debate. They say it is so, end of conversation. Really! I say bring on the debates, then we'll decide who's right.

Omg Mr Backer... It's both! You can't purely rely on the questionably "free market".

@leicanoct Businesses naturally clumps together to assert dominance. They buy or lobby politicians for laws to crush smaller disruptive competitors. Why innovate when you're making boat loads on an existing product and just pick off potential threats.
Tesla is one of the most shorted stocks on the US market ever. There's laws in the US where you're not allowed to buy a car directly. There's taxes making it more expensive to run an electric car. It's impressive Telsa is still standing.

@leicanoct You are right, the free market is the root of the problem. No question about that!

@leicanoct You are right. The goverment must stop subsidising fossil fuel industry and the army with billions of dollars. That is socialism ! If this was a real free market we wouldn't be using fossil fuel at all by now...

We are getting our electricity turned off in California. What happen to all the GREEN MONEY? Thank God my GAS GENERATOR TAKES FUEL, WHICH IN TURN PRODUCES ELECTRICITY.
