Dubai is a trading hub for trade with Iran, Iraq, India and Pakistan, and Oman and Yemen. It has also become a trading hub with the former Soviet States, which find Dubai closer than Europe yet provides access to Western and Chinese products. Saudi Arabia has no history of trade on the Eastern coast and does not have trading opportunities on its western coast and is pretty much confined to selling oil.

There are many places with potential to become attraction, but these places are not easly accessable even for locals.

It's large, but it's 99% sand dunes. I mean, no offence but after a couple of landcruiser and buggy rides in the sand you're pretty much done with that. Anyway, all desert kingdoms will fail eventually, since cheap air travel will be harder to come by. Dubai is ok for now, because it's also a airport hub, but all this wil change with less reliance on fossil fuels (not saying it will happen anytime soon, though)

I´d really love to visit Saudi Arabia one day. But their openly anti-human rights policies are indeed one big factor that is preventing me from going. Plus, I also think there´s a general lack of... knowledge about the country. Saudi Arabia has always been famous precisely for being very closed to the outside world, and most people don´t have a clear image of what is out there to see, do or experience. Every major country in the tourist industry has at least one place that represents it across the world and that people dream about visiting one day, but for Saudi Arabia you have... what? I mean sure they have the holy cities of Mecca and Medina... but since only Muslims are allowed to visit them... What else am I supposed to see in Saudi Arabia? If I want to experience the classic Arab culture and visit ancient cities I go to Jordan, if I want to have modern take from it and be impressed with crazy luxury and skyscrapers I go to Dubai. But what makes me wanna go to Saudi Arabia? I´m not saying there´s nothing else to do; If I´m saying I´d love to visit it one day, it´s partially because every single Saudi person I have ever talked to have been insanely kind and friendly and because the only person I know to have been to the country described as "Another world" and made me really curious. I think the whole issue here comes to marketing, as I still have the same question: What is it there in Saudi Arabia to see?

I've actually visited Saudi Arabia twice. Going as a tourist without a local to show you around would be daunting, but it's been quite a good experience with one. It's worth noting that a lot of stuff isn't complete or officially open yet (museums and other entertainment), so they're not quite ready for masses of tourists yet. But they are laying the groundwork with a huge expansion of public transit and more organized excursions available through their website. The biggest problem they'll have is differentiating their image from Dubai.

Dubai knew from day 1 that oil isn't something that they can depend on, so they started having open minded and progressive societies (atleast in terms of middle East standards), promoting tourism and encouraging businesses to come to Dubai with minimal or no tax. Saudi, on the other hand still feels it has oil as a last resort if some other plan fails and yes, they are definitely not progressive and even when they pretend to be, they fail miserably.

Having been to several Arab countries, Saudi Arabia will never achieve major tourist attraction because of their societal policies. The only bright spot for Saudi is they're not as bad as Iran. The Sunni-Shiite schism is associated with perpetual war and terrorism, and these two countries are the leaders. Ausi will never achieve global tourist status unless it changes its image. It doesn't help that a Saudi F-15 pilot goes berserk at Tyndall AFB in Florida. They clearly will have to do sincere and radical changes like signing a peace treaty with Israel and visibly seeing Jews there. That's a tall order that's likely result in the overthrow of the monarchy.

Saudi Arabia relies heavily on oil, and are stuck in the old ways which are not progressive no matter how hard they try and show the world. For example, women are still required to cover up with an abaya(local long dress) regardless if you are muslim or not. They recently allowed women to go with uncovered hair. They have a LOOOOOONG way to go to even try and compete with Dubai, let alone take the throne from them. Dubai already weaned itself from depending on oil, they invest in all kinds of technology, they embrace change, theyve made Dubai a tourist and business hub, in the sense that if you ask alot of people the capital of UAE, they would tell you Dubai.
As youve said, Saudi have the religious history side, and they should build up on that somehow and market it as a tourist attraction which would work as there are more than 2 billion muslims worldwide ( thats a HUGE market )

I think you miss a lot by ignoring the cost of war and violating international law like murdering foreign press and slaughtering/starving civilians like in Yemen. UAE-sponsored forces have murdered Yemeni journalists, that's true, but not the government and not in a diplomatic establishment. UAE has caused humanitarian violations for workers, migrants, and abuses against women, that's true, but dozens don't compare to hundreds of thousands.

Great video and insights! Really enjoyed every part of this video. From an outsiders perspective - I felt that Saudi was really trying to distance themselves from what makes them “unique”. Rather than embracing the Islamic culture and capitalising on that, they tried to conform to western standards and didn’t really offer anything new to high paying tourists (typically westerners). I liked how you said that they should focus on what they’re best known for - the Islamic and the Arab culture. The country is very rich culture wise!
And they’ll really have to work on their hospitality because it’s sometimes one of the worst- they’re so harsh and their tone don’t seem to be very welcoming when we are at the airport. I know it’s kind of influenced by their bedouin-like culture - but this can be worked on by the airport staff to give a better representation to the country. I’m always afraid when I go to the airport xD.
As a srilankan I can also attest to the points where building an airport or a large tower isn’t going to help tourism that much - it’s just additional cost. As a tourist myself, I don’t fancy going into large towers when going to a different country.

People literally pray in the direction of the Kabah and the prophet’s mosque is in Madinah. So yeah Saudi Arabia is the centre of the Islamic world. Not to say other places aren’t worth visiting

Not to be offensive, but Saudi Arabia does not attract me at all. All we hear is women are not allowed to drive. There is such a strict dress code, women have to wear an abaya. Women need a male guardian to travel. Alcohol is not sold. I'd rather spend my hard earned money in another country. Sure Dubai is also muslim, but there seems to be far more freedom there compared to SA.

Exactly. And the last thing is that Saudi Arabia does not allow women to leave the country. If they want to leave the country then they must have a man with them. I know about a story where a Saudi Arabian lady left Saudi Arabia to start a new life outside without a man with her but she was captured. She was raped. beaten and kidnapped and she was taken back to Saudi Arabia. She has not been seen since 2019. The UAE Allows women to move out without a man with them

In order to make a country an attractive place, construction is not enough; other things are also needed. I don't think that a heavily traditional religion country like Saudi Arabia will have much chance globally.

They should definitely legalize alcohol and highly tax it. It sounds silly but without alcohol a lot of westerners simply don’t wanna come, cause they just wanna party.

Comparing a large country like Saudi Arabia to a small city like Dubai doesn’t make sense. It’s like saying why China is not as rich as Singapore! Also, etihad, emirates and Qatar airways are all heavily subsidised by the country but it’s simply not possible for Saudis arabia to subsidise Saudi airlines as they can’t afford it,

Islam is a religion not a culture. What is Saudis culture where Islam hasn’t seeped in? That would be food, way of dressing pre or uninfluenced by religion. Even if Saudis wanted to capitalize on religious tourism, they can’t because it’s not a yearly inclination, it’s a once in a lifetime going unlike places like the Vatican which allow both religious and normal people to pour in, even if being centric to religion.

@@meet221197 Saudi Arabia's women's rights are improving at a really quick pace. Since MBS became crown prince back in 2017, he has allowed women to drive, abolished the law forcing them to wear a hijab, and more and more women are starting to enter the work force. Most of Saudi Arabia's population are millenials and generation z and the older people make up a tiny part of our population, and the old people are usually the ones who are against these new laws, but alot of younger Saudis have actually gone to university in the west/are more active on social media.

Just back from Saudi and spent 3 days there, Saudi air is like mid class airline. I had Tourist visa and rental car companies refused to rent me rental car due to visa WTH, No one speak English, no English signs, except very few places like Redsea Mall and around (Jeddah) are Dubai level but rest is like a poor country. Bullet train starts at 1.30pm & only 7 trains, buying ticket was a hell of experience for foreign credit card holders. Bought ticket from ticket counter but only one way ticket , then I had to spent 40min more in Maddina to get return ticket. On Jeddah airport no Wi-Fi for visitors, can get Wi-Fi if has a local SIM but why I need Wi-Fi if I has a local sim. Luckily T-Mobile saved me as I had activated International Roaming.

As a single woman I am not going to travel to countries where I have no rights. Plus why go when it will be as sterile and generic and boring as Dubai?
All the german Influencers who moved to Dubai to promote it are coming back.
Dubai is just a giant shopping mall in my opinion. Nothing about local culture and architecture. I can eat an avocado toast everywhere in the world. I rather go to a place that respects women has has something interesting to offer.
I am not the shopping and taking pucs for social Media type. I want it real.
