*There is a slight error in the recording. The blockade began on 5 June 2017 (as we say at the beginning of the video) and not on 5 January as stated at 3:38.

@@wildborat88I should express 4 points of profound difference of views to your statements:
1.- Look to me Saoudi Arabia should be richer than Quatar, because, aside of oil unlimited ressources (1/5 of oil reserve), they have other mineral resources. Plus, they have the MECCA, that's mean important captive tourist resources! So, Human situation in this country, for example, should be way better than in Quatar...
2.- Other arab countries (Barein, UAE) should have, at least, a comparable wealth situation to Quatar, if their money were used wisely!!!
3.- False statement about Syria... ISIS and Syria are archenemy! They were a mastermind behind the scenes to shape this militia to dismantle Syria. Since their creation, all analysis pointed out this group was funded and armed by Saoudi Arabia, and they were close ground ally to Turkey, THE great rival on Syria's battlefields!!!
4.- Having money dosen't imply smartness... We have to acknowledge this country showed an effective adaptability... That is a sign of wisdom and foresight of the authorities, and maturity and implication of the whole population to accept painful adjustments!!!
And I'm just an observer from a poor little Caribbean country!!!

Visited Qatar last week. Was amazed as how the country has overcome the crisis despite the total boycott from the mighty neighbors. Visited major hypermarkets in the country and was blown off as how the government made its people to ensure availability of basic needs and their favorite brands from other countries. Many major brands like unilever and others have started manufacturing in Qatar and this has made the Qatar self sufficient .
Even though the blockade is over, the UAE & KSA products are still non-existent in the market. The ultimate losers is KSA & UAE only. Period.

I'm Turkish, i have a business in Qatar, and mostly living there. So i might have some perspective.
First, the surface cause of the blockade was Qatar's support to muslim brotherhood but it was more because of Qatar's announcement on April 2017 regarding South Pars gas reserves. Just about a month after this announcement, on June 5th the blockade started. It was ramadan time in Qatar, and i remember there were not even milk left in supermarkets. This was a big shock for Qataris, they were kind of used to be able to buy anything, but not this time. Turkey took quick action and first couple weeks supplies came by cargo planes. Not an economical way of course, but that was not the point. Food crisis averted quickly.
Another reason why UAE holds grudge to Qatar is FIFA World Cup 2022, which Qatar will host. UAE is literaly jealous of this event, and they even officially stated couple times that Qatar had to call off to host this event in order to remove the blockade.
Last year Saudi Arabia tried to stage a coup to the Amir, they failed hilariously. Ever since, each year June 5th is being celebrated as a victory day in Qatar, even before the blockade was over. It was a day they stood still, not bend the knee to a greater power. (by power I mean the USA, not Saudis) This became a national pride for them and they supported their leader on every aspect. Now they triumphed, and i think blockade may be one of best things happened to Qatar. Now they produce their of dairy products, livestock and agriculture to some extent, and they have stronger relations with other nations. They have much brighter future than Saudis.

@@mariajason3547 April 2017, Qatar announces its intentions about South Pars, largest natural gas reserve in its territory.
May 20, 2017, Donald Trump visits Saudi Arabia. You would remember the famous photo with his hands on the globe with king Salman and Egyptian president Sisi.
June 5, 2017 Saudi Arabia starts blockade on Qatar, along with several mid-eastern countries.
Now, Trump is no more the president, and even none of the demands were met, (the situation is even worse than before in their perspective) the blockade is over.
I believe you can decide USA's role in this, regardless of the size of their military base.

Not having to depend on the volatile and capricious rulers of the neighboring realms significantly improved Qatar’s international standing. For context, I live in Doha.
I remember the morning I woke up to the news of the blockade. I had my Businees Statistics final exam that day. I just opened my eyes, give'em a slight rub. Open the news and read "KSA, Bahrain and UAE cut Qatar off". I had do the most cartoon thing ever and rub my eyes really well to see clearly and comprehend it. It was quite a WTF moment.
I get to the exam hall, where we had plenty of Emirati students, and all of them were confused as fuck, "the fuck is happening? You heard the news?" It was quite a surreal feeling.
P.S. Jordan did NOT cut it's diplomatic relationswl with Qatar. They just reduced the level of representation by recalling their ambassador. That was probably the best move Jordan could do. There is Israel to the west, Iraq and and Syria to the east and north. KSA is the only neighbour Jordan could have reliable both political and economic relationship. The recall of the ambassador was a gesture if good will to the KSA, while still keeping all the trade with Qatar, at least as much as the jew trade routes could support.
Rumours go that despite the opening of the borders, Saudi trucks are not allowed into Qatar just yet, but Jordanian trucks coking through KSA are welcome.

to play sanctions effectively, you need to be sole source of something important , like US was with oil to Japan in 1941.
and even then things can blow up in your face. sometimes literally like in mentioned case...
sanctions very rarely work as intended, since they are proof to the sanctioned nation that someone is out to get them, hence inducing siege mentality and forcing innovating into circumnavigating them... or at very least coping with them. 60 years of sanctions did nothing to change regime in Cuba...

The Embargo was put in place after the meeting of all the heads of the gulf states in Riad with President Trump. It was Trumps first trip abroad. Qatar left this meeting in Riad premature well before the meeting was over. After this incident the embargo was set up.
Would be interesting to know why Qatar left this important meeting early and was what the matter of the meeting. As soon as Trump arrived back in the States he announced and boasted about a 500 Bln USD arms deal made in Riad. Obviously Qatar withdrew from the deal made by Trump in Riad. The Embargo was then the result.

All three nations (SA, Qatar and UAE) are very close to each other. Culturally very close. They should never have any friction between themselves. I have been in UAE and Qatar and people are very friendly and hospitable. They provide opportunity for everyone with a skill. These things (frictions) do happen and hopefully they learn how to resolve issues between themselves. They have very smart young people who are well educated in the west and are doing everything to improve their standard of living. The only thing they should worry about is that the world is moving away from fossil fuel and this will have major impact on their economy. Now, is the right time for them to invest on their people and their countries and open the borders like EU for free movement. This will help to improve the relationship between these three nations and in the Arabian Peninsula. They should look forward and improve their relationship and forget about past. Good luck to them.
