    I looked inside the M13/40 on Aberdeen PG. It was more cramped inside than I could have imagined. The side hatch was open. I feel for those crews operating in the desert.

    They adapted a 1930's Italian tank to use the engine / transmission from an MLVW? It is likely the best engine and transfer case the tank ever had & RCEME can do anything! : - )

    Interesting but I would have wished to see more of this tank in detail, inside and out! That it was a mediocre small tank with entirely bolted/riveted thin armour like all Italian tanks, fitted with a 47 mm pop-gun was evident. Cramped and prone to catch fire when hit even if it was diesel fueled and was not very reliable but generally the Italian industry suffered from slow and little production....

    • @BHuang92
      @BHuang92 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It was a minor improvement over the previous M13/40 with a more reliable engine and improved armor. But much of the flaws remain very glaring.

    • @paoloviti6156
      @paoloviti6156 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@BHuang92 that was the sad truth as the "new" M14/41 was just barely improved with the bigger engine compared to the M13/40 and the crews immediately complained that the vehicle was still unreliable and cramped, and caught fire easily when hit...
      I have been inside the M13/40 placed in the military museum outside Rome and was shocked how primitive it was inside! Nope, it is not my tank by any means...

      To be fair, the 47 mm gun was a good anti-tank gun early in the war when many tanks still had 37 mm guns and many of the M13's British opponents were armed with the 40 mm 2 pounder guns. Italian bolted armor was bad, but some opponents had that as well. Unfortunately for the Italians, tank size and armament evolved quickly during the war. Tanks became larger to carry larger more powerful guns and thicker armor. As the M14 and M15 illustrate, the Italians couldn't keep up with respect to tanks. (The best they could do was create anti-tank assault guns like the M18 Semovento with a more powerful 75 mm based on the M13/14/15 chassis.)

    • @paoloviti6156
      @paoloviti6156 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@folgore1 I agree fully with you but the Matilde was nearly immune to it's shots and the M14/41 had to dangerously near up the M3 or the M4 to be effective. The only tank that was quite effective was the Semovente da 75/18 to have any chance against the allied tanks but far to few. Thanks to the enormous courage of the crews they did manage to achieve success together with the M14 and the M13. I could write a book regarding the Italian tanks and the general lack of training and few resources including very poor economy. Sad...

      @@paoloviti6156 And the Matilda was the reason the Italians needed to be rescued by the Germans... That and the inability of Italian industry to produce high-quality weapons in a timely manner in the numbers needed. I still wonder if Italian infantry had any type of anti-tank weapon like the Panzerfaust or the Bazooka?
