  • Canadian Forces Base Borden is located about an hour's drive North of Toronto. The base is open access, so anyone can go to the museum.
    In addition to the vehicles at the museum, there are others scattered as monuments around the base. I encountered a T-72 and T-55 on my way out the gate.

      2015. 🙂 Really amazing man, lived on a farm in Wilno in his retirement with a working Sherman - think a later model, one of the ones we got to fill our armour regiments, post war. The 8 CH in Petawawa used to sometimes send two soldiers there every month to help him maintain it and other things. There was a fire there in the late 80s or early 90s, IIRC, after I'd been posted from regiment. He was the honorary Colonol of the RCAC when I was in and often met the soldiers on course. He had an uncanny memory of people's names and where they were from. Because I was from there, he told me once he was based at the Cape Spear coastal defence fort, Newfoundland and Labrador before his unit went to the UK and converted to armour. In the 80s, at a mess dinner, he insisted the Sherman was the best tank of the war because they were so easily fixed and replaceable. Used to say something to the effect of "I'd lose shermans during the day and the next day there would be replacements. When the Germans lost a tank, it was gone."

    8:47 I would say that the Ram is far from being gutted, was just inspecting it about 2 weekends ago, and the engine, transmission, controls/other automotive components, seats, many storage racks and nearly all of the electric system is still in the vehicle (including an electric motor mounted on the turret basket), so fortunately it is actually mostly complete from what I’ve seen inside

    • @whelmy
      @whelmy 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      to gutted for his standards for an inside the hatch perhaps?

    • @user-kz3qg1qv2p
      @user-kz3qg1qv2p 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@whelmy I wouldn't say so, a vehicle with a nearly intact electrical system usually means a mostly complete vehicle, since that is generally the first system taken out of a vehicle which is being gutted. Some parts like the machine gun mount, escape hatch and radios are missing, but it is probably as complete (in terms of amount of parts in any condition) as the Panzer 3 in Bovington. However, the vehicle has been sitting out in the tank park, exposed for around 50 to 60 years, so it is not pretty inside, and every part is covered in dust and rust, and some parts like the commander's seat and turret basket are over half eaten by rust. I made a 22 second clip from where the escape hatch was, and most of what you can see is dust in the air. So I wouldn't say it is gutted, even for his high standards, instead it is un-restored, rusty, dusty and gross for someone like the Chieftain to be in, or anyone for that matter.

    I lived at Borden as a kid from 1956 to 1961. I was back briefly in 1976 but after that, according to Google Earth, it seems that the PMQs and much of the old base landmarks were gutted. This video had no discernible landmarks that were familiar to me. I was led to understand that the elementary school was now a museum but perhaps that has changed as well. I am hoping to go back either this summer or next.

    I've been to that museum many times. CFB Borden is home to Cadet Training Centre Blackdown, which will house over 2000 cadets. From 2016 - 2019, I worked with the two week kids, and each serial would go visit the museum during the 6 weeks the camp was open.
    Just wanted to point out that at 2:50, the wall on your left are all of the Canadian Forces personnel who have lost their lives since the War in Afghanistan began. The first four pictures in the top left are 4 members of the PPCLI who were killed in a friendly fire incident when an American pilot dropped a bomb on a training area.
    Also, at 3:10, you walk past a series of posters that list every Canadian who has been awarded the Victoria Cross. It has their pictures and a short blurb about what they went through.
    If you have one of the staff talk with you about the vehicles, they point out that while the T-55 you show at 9:05 is a Soviet tank, it is actually a German vehicle. If you get into the seat, the controls are labelled in German.
    The concrete pad at 18:35 was the Hetzer, and the Centurion that you see at 18:53 is the first picture that will pop up if you google Centurion Tank.
    The last point I want to make is at 19:12, you pan over and talk about the Stuarts that are flanking one memorial. In the background on top of the hill you will see another memorial. That is actually the tomb for General Worthington and his wife.

You should check out the Canadian Warplane Heritage museum next time you are around here, it's home to one of two flying Lancaster bombers, among lots of other vintage training and combat aircraft. They are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year.

    At about 18:19 you asked if the Canadian Centurions had been up-gunned with the 105. Your escort said that he thought they had not. All the Centurions I saw in Lahr in 1975 had the L7 as their main armament (there was a mixture of over 70 Mk 5s and Mk 11s for the sabre squadrons of the RCD, a fly-over squadron, and war stocks). Centurions were still in use at CTC Gagetown in 1978 when I arrived for officer training, but the Armour Branch retired them soon after, having gone from Rent-a-Leopard to Leo C1.

    • @gungatim6630
      @gungatim6630 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool, I got there first in 1983, 5 years later. They don't call it phase training any more and the equivalent of the section leading stuff we did in phase 2 is something they do with the infantry and artillery, now. 🙂 Seems odd. I always thought the Centurions in Canada retained the 20 pounder, but I'm not 100% sure. I know in Petawawa when I got there in 1985 (8 CH) they had a bunch of old Centurions near the range for later use as hard targets. They definitely had 20 pdrs on them. 🙂 Oh, my first troop warrant used to drive a Centurion on the missile range in Borden and the infantry fired their missiles (not TOW, this would have been a precursor in the early 70s or late 60s) at him, LOL. With concrete heads, of course!

    I would recommend the museum have bicycles available to ride to and from each display, maybe a family package. You'd cover a lot more ground that way and not sound so winded from the kilometers of ground you and the director were covering between displays.

      @bobbydouzepis8260 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      DitzyDoo I would recommend the museum centralize the displays in one area. The way it is now is totally disjointed and does not allow for any comparisons to be made. Its like, oh look theres another one behind a tree way off in the distance. Why do we do this to ourselves,

    • @ditzydoo4378
      @ditzydoo4378 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bobbydouzepis8260 I understand your view, but what I take from the way they've laid out the displays have a connection with the many tree speciesism's displayed on the chart in the main building that Nick thought was a vehicle chart. It's actually one of the nicer places in MooseJaw too.
    FYI to anyone the airshow they hold in early July is always a cool event. Especially since the snowbirds are based there. The CF-18 demonstration is also great. They get overshadowed by the Snowbirds but IMO they put on a great show too.
