    Last year I picked up a 2014 JSW tdi 6m CPO with 16,400 miles. Was fully loaded, moonroof, 17" alloys, premium sound with 6 disk changer and NO navigation. Don't waste your $$ on the nav, display too small. Has the factory roof rails. Bought a used OEM roof crossbars and cargo carrier.
    The 2014 has a traction control switch that can be toggled off. This vehicle does not require add blue either. 50mpg hwy all day long. Factory Continental's are horrible in the snow. Bought a set of 16" steelies with Blizzaks from Tirerack, $980. This is a must have upgrade for winter driving.
    Thanks for the video, very well done Sir.

    I agree with everything you said -- positive and negative. I am retired and just returned from a 4,000 mile road trip to the civil war battlegrounds and my 6 speed TDI was just amazing -- performance, fuel economy, and driveability. As for the environment, there are more diesel 18 wheelers on the road now than I have ever seen before, pumping huge amounts of black exhaust. Please concern yourself with those before my little four cylinder, whitch with the exhaust scrubber system is really not that bad. Nobody will ever take this car from me!

    • @DriveItRyan
      @DriveItRyan  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robert LaRey I agree with that! I really can’t think of a better car to take on a long trip. Enjoy it and drive it for as long as you can. Mine is going back to the dealer tomorrow. I’m going to miss it, but maybe I’ll get another one down the road. We’ll see!

      FYI, according to the computer, I got as high as 59 MPG on my trip and averaged 43 according to my math. Since I have my car registered in a Texas county that does not require an emmissions test to get state inspected, I think it will be quite a while before the EPA or whomever finds a way to pressure me into the modification. I am having a aftermarket on/off switch for the ESC installed; even though we don't get much snow in Texas, I just like having the control. I'll be on the road for another three thousand mile trip in July to the Great Lakes.

    I love my Jetta 2010 tdi, has 386000 or so km on it.
    I’m keeping it, going to ride it till it dies and it has its quirks, like the thermostats are always finicky and crap out early.
    You gotta clean the EGR with highway driving but that’s easy for my work commute, and after an upgraded hpfp I’ve been getting 52-54 mpg on stock steel rims with winter tires in the front and all season in the back.
    I love the sound of my car, I love that it’s a gem to be saved from the crushing lots, and most of all the aftermarket parts are becoming cheap and plentiful, but the occasional parts that need proper treatment have to be maintained (The new DPF is finicky with some models after the upgraded modifications from the scandal but they’re prone to cracking when reaching 270+lbs of torque)
    But you could always delete it( check your local laws) it may always a cel for some little thing but damned if it isn’t the best low rpm/high torque fun with that beautiful turbo whistle!

Went to dealership and they said I have replace egr valves, mass flow sensor, all temp sensors, and a few other things, labor + parts was like 4k+. Now I also have AC and heater coil issues, probably need to flush ac system. Pretty much a bunch of other minor things that would total another 1k for parts. I bought the identical car used after the emissions fixes from a VW dealer in August 2017 with 38k miles. I've put almost 50k miles on it in about two and a half years of mostly highway driving. I also have a set of Blizzaks for winters here in Washington. Most of those miles were commuting to my job in Seattle from central Washington 115 miles each way over a 3000-foot mountain pass. I've owned 30+ vehicles over my driving years and few have exceeded my expectations in as many ways as my Jetta. I've consistently gotten 47-52 mpg. It has only had a couple of minor issues both of which I was able to fix myself (replacing a bad ambient temperature sensor and fixing broken shutters in front of the radiator from the previous owner having a minor front end collision). I've added a short-throw shift kit and driving lights. I don't make that killer commute anymore so I am hoping I can keep this car running for 20 years. There are very few contemporary cars that you can have that hope for these days and it looks we won't see the TDI again.

    • @DriveItRyan
      @DriveItRyan  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ben Lanza I agree it’s a great car and the mileage is unreal. I don’t think you’ll have an issue keeping it for 20 years. How do you like the shifter? That’s something I always wanted to do to mine.

    Great video. Just a couple comments. I had a 2013 Jetta TDI with the DSG. I turned it back in when VW offered me more money than I could reasonably refuse. And that was splitting the sorry money with the previous owner because I bought just a couple weeks after the scandal hit the presses (stick it to the man, ya know?). I've been test driving the Passat TDI's that are coming back on the market (I sometimes felt the Jetta was a bit small). I forgot how much I had to get used to the DSG. And the manual Passat I drove had way more turbo lag than I thought it should/maybe it's just too heavy of a car for the engine. So I'm in the market for a Jetta TDI with the manual again. Great cars. Put a tune on them (guys with the Malone or Kerma tunes are getting 170+ hp and 70 MPG). Remove the emissions junk (I'm from MT where we don't have emissions testing). And then just drive them for 300k. It almost doesn't make sense to buy anything else as a commuter. Just my opinion...

      @DriveItRyan  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The engine performs great. The DSG is great except for the maintenance cost. But I accept the maintenance cost because it's such a great transmission.
    It gets far better fuel mileage than my motorcycles. I've gotten close to 60 mpg on trips.
    I plan on keeping it until the wheels fall off.

    We had a 2009 Sportwagen with 140k miles, did the buyback, and replaced it with an Alltrack. Later in 2017 when the embargo was lifted, VW offered a good deal to move the the 2015 TDIs that had been stuck on dealer lots ($5000 off, 0% interest, 100k warranty), so we got a 2015 Golf Sportwagen TDI. The 2015 gets unbelievably good mpg (45 avg, low 50s at 75 mph, maybe even 60s if you drive less than 70). We never got close to that with our 2009 TDI.
    Regarding no ability to turn off traction control, I initially thought that too, but reading the manual I learned VW moved the switch into the car stereo (surely to save money). We also have General Arctic Altimax snow tires and they work great. When I drive our Golf Sportwagen TDI there is a noticably diesely feel when compared to our Alltrack, which is the same car but uses gas. The feature that irritates me the most about the car is when you turn the temperature control to full blue it automatically turns on the A/C and recirc requiring you to turn it off. The second most irritating feature is keyless entry/push-button start. I don't like the way you can't tell how much DEF is left until it is low. It can be done with with a VAGCOM cable, but most owners done have that. The 6-speed manual and its features are the greatest part of the car.

      @DriveItRyan  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your reply! Sounds like you got yourself a great deal. I wish I knew that you can turn tcs off through the radio when I had the car. I too, wish that you could tell how much AdBlue Fluid is left in the tank. It does ding and tell you when it gets low though. I do miss this car, and the mileage. If I get another one, I'll be sure to make a video on it! Enjoy your car my friend :)

    I have a 2014 Passat TDI and it doesn't have a traction control on/off button either, but there is a way to turn off the traction control on my car and it might work on yours. Follow this sequence: 1) power up the car but do not start the engine, 2) turn on the hazard lights, 3) press the gas peddle 5 times and you will see the traction control "off" icon on the dash, 4) start the car and you will now be driving without traction control. To go back to traction control "on", turn off the engine and then restart. The traction control will be reactivated. Give it a shot.

      I have since taken the buyback offer from VW, but I have never experienced any reliability issues during my ownership (New to ~60k miles). What kind of issues are you having in the extreme cold? Diesel fueled cars/trucks generally do not like to start right up in extremely cold temperatures.

      @@DriveItRyan it all falls under the exhaust system with add blue. My line froze and cracked last winter leaving me stranded and I've read some horror stories about the dpf def system in general. I want to delete it but its 3g Canadian to do it and would rather just hope for the best and try to sell it before major issues come up. I commute 100km a day for work though so having the diesel is nice but it wont be so nice if I'm tossing money at it non stop.

    I just bought myself a 2014 Jetta TDI automatic. So far I love it and it was a sweet deal with the car having only 33K miles on it. I purchased it from a Nissan dealership (probably why it was priced well) and noticed under the hood some stickers stating the vehicle had been modified twice, the second done in March 2018. I was not aware about the AD blue requirement and was not informed when purchased because Nissan probably would not care to tell me. Is this something that the dealer would do every 10K miles during the oil change? If so how much typically is being charged to do this, in VW dealer prices I mean.

      @@DriveItRyan you said the auto was just as good or fun to drive. Lol not even close, and it's going to be hard to find a TDI auto with 300-400k that runs mint and or that you can be tuned properly due to the torque constraints of a auto.

      John Doe all I said was that the DSG is pretty good and not a bad option for those that don’t know how to drive a manual. Basically, it doesn’t suck. Still, I agree with you that the manual will always be the better option and more reliable long term.
