20:05 Omi (who is not only a samurai, but the lord of this village) gave that peasant a clear order, "STEP BACK". Instead of stepping back, the peasant chose a bad time to show Blackthorne that there are other Christians in Japan by making the sign of the cross. He disobeyed Omi's order, which was a clear case of a commoner disrespecting a samurai (and the local lord), and that's why Omi killed him.

This show is AMAZING...And talking about attention to detail - they used the largest Japanese crew ever for a TV or movie production outside of Japan and hired consultants who were experts in things like the Japanese language (17th century Japanese is not the same as modern Japanese), the costumes, the architecture, the way people moved and walked, etc. Hiroyuki Sanada, the actor who plays Toranaga, was also a producer on the show and he spent all of his time on set (when he was not acting) checking all of the details for historical accuracy.
(Here's a fun fact - Mariko is based on an actual person (as are all of the main characters in the show) and she had to learn Japanese calligraphy (writing with a brush) for the show but they made sure that her calligraphy style matched the historical figure that she is based on. You know...just in case experts on Japanese historical calligraphy are watching...LOL.)

I don't want to compare the two because they're of such different genres and styles, but with _Shōgun_ and _Fallout_ 2024 has gifted us with two of the greatest new shows in recent memory. The awards circuit is going to have their work cut out for them this year for sure

You are very perceptive! You knew in seconds exactly what Kashigi Yabushige was like just by seeing him smile. In a similar way you knew exactly what kind of man Yoshi Toranaga is, too. I absolutely love your reviews and eagerly await them. :)

28:52 - Yabushige (the "smiling guy") originally wanted to execute Blackthorne but instead ordered one of his men to be killed in his place - and he said to do it in his "special way" which was to boil him. So, Blackthorne is off the hook...at least for now...

And its only the beginning, nice reaction. It doesn't shock me so much since i watched the original series back in 1980, i was 13. Granted they didn't show the guy being boiled, all you could do is hear him in pain. But i certainly saw Omison cut the head off the man, that was shocking and seemed just as sudden.
