George R R Martin loved this book when he was young and took lots of inspiration when writing a song of ice and fire, you can see a lot of similarities between both pilot episodes!
King Robert/Taiko offering Ned/Toranaga to rule until the heir is of age on their deathbed, being the only honorable one and being suspected of going against the heir.
However Ned was a naive and somewhat a dumb lord compared to Toranaga.

@@thomasjones4570 What a terrible boomer take lol, the new one is better written, and acted and produced.
Don't be fooled by nostalgia, the quality is miles ahead in every aspect. And it treats the Japanese like actual main characters and not like comedic side characters.
If you actually value authenticity this one is waaaaay more accurate to how it was back then. It's actually incredible how well crafted it is.
Just ask the Japanese which version they prefer, that should tell you enough..

The samurai could kill with Impunity. They were completely loyal to their lord and honour was quite literally everything. The Portuguese held Japan for a long while and as with their catholic doctrine tried to convert the Japanese to Christianity. The Jesuits were the strongarm of the catholic faith.... But to the Japanese of the time duty to ones lord would always come before religion. At the time Japanese were mostly either Buddhist or Shinto religion

18:17 The reason for the beheading was because the peasant was told to back away by one of the leaders and didn’t listen. One thing you’ll have to keep in mind for this show is honor, duty, and respect rule above all else in this culture.

This is fiction and I don't think the scriptwriter has thought about it that deeply.
To be honest, this scene doesn't really make any sense.
The barbarism was simply emphasized in order to exaggerate the exoticism of Japan.

35:21 - "I have more than one heart." Such a beautiful line...I was listening to the official Shogun podcast and they talked about how the show's writers wrote the show in English, then the dialogue went to experts who translated the dialogue into 17th century Japanese, then the Japanese would be translated back to English for the sub-titles. The sub-titled line, "I have more than one heart." was a surprise to the original writers (they didn't write it that way) but they saw it and loved it!

38:28 - "Damn...these three. Destiny about them." I noticed in the last shot of the episode, as Toranaga, Blackthorne and Mariko come together for the first time, the camera pans down to show the family crest on the back of Toranaga's robes. It is the crest of the Tokugawa clan (*) made up of three hollyhock leaves, perhaps representing the three main protagonists of the show.
(*) Toranaga is based on the historic figure Ieyasu Tokugawa. The triple hollyhock crest is historically accurate (I recognized it from my experience reading Japanese manga. LOL.)

AUSSIES!!!!! :) Just some notes about the young samurai, Tadayoshi, committing himself and his son to death for speaking up and embarrassing his lord. it may have seemed extreme (and it was!) but he actually committed multiple offences punishable by death. #1: He stepped foot into the council of regents' meeting room without permission which was violation of strict hierarchical rules. #2: Drawing one's sword inside the castle's walls (even half-way) with anger or aggression was forbidden and a direct threat to both the safety and authority of the lords present, which in this case was the 4 most important lords in the country. #3: Challenging the behaviour/words of a lord would be viewed as profoundly disrespectful to ALL lords present as the social hierarchy maintains its overall stability through honour and decorum. This is why Toranaga's response was always so polite. While very uncommon, in extreme cases of dishonor, a samurai might offer to extend the act of seppuku to his family, including his male child, to fully atone for the perceived disgrace and to remove the stain from his family line. This drastic measure would underscore the severity of the offense and the samurai’s profound commitment to restoring honor. Ultimately, it is up to the lord to accept or deny the request. Tadayoshi told his wife Fuji that the order came from his lord so we know Toranaga accepted. As to why he accepted? Again, to maintain decorum. If decorum is lost, then it is anarchy/war. Enjoyed watching with you. Cheers from Bris Vegas! ;)

Just as good? No, they completely botched and miscast the roles of both Blackthorne and Mariko, two out of the three main characters of the narrative. It's like "Other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?" There are other things, like being filmed in Canada during winter instead of in Japan but the mis-handling of the characters is enough.

It is well done but some of the acting is a little wooden. Some of the performances are so good, the bad ones in contrast stand out. Some of the cinematography and framing is pretty bad sprinkled with some fantastic shots so also a little inconsistent. Definitely a great show but I think it is a little overhyped as one of the best television shows ever, maybe it just stands out because most television today is so poorly produced from what I call the comic book generation of filmmakers and show runners who too often are too showy and seem to not understand the basics of visual storytelling. Maybe they just have too many tools and feel they need to use everything and try to fill their shots with so much that they almost try too hard to be impressive versus using the story to direct their direction. No subtly, just trying to blow everyone away with every frame, the artistry is knowing when to dial it back and let the story lead the choices.

Quick historical background: the yr 1600: Western European Christianity is fractured. Protestant Europe (Egland Holland Germany eg) and Catholic Europe (Spain Portugal etc) are divided in faith and trade.
The Spanish and Portuguese have didvided non European world amongst themselves to build empire and trade.
Blackthorne an Englishman, a pilot sailing for the Dutch is a privateer...the crew have official permission to capture and hinder Catholic merchant shipping.
Blackthorne is based on William Adam the 1st Englishman to set foot on Japanese soil.
The Portuguese have established trading ports in Japan and have been able to convert some of the locals to Catholicism like Mariko sama etc.
Fuji sama's husband must kill his entire line ie son and then end himself for the insult he committed at the council meeting. Hope that helps set the scene...
Edit: the Japanese word for pilot is Anjin, which becomes Blackthornes name. The first episode of any show and indeed this episode is a pilot called Anjin...I thought that was pretty clever....

@SpartanandPudgey So glad you are delving into this incredible show. It’s based on the 1975 book & is a remake of the groundbreaking 1980 tv mini series which was one of the first truly epic tv shows which are common today. Also the book & 1980 show were culturally important as it piqued more interest in Japanese history & culture which in the 70’s was basically some household name brands like Sony, Honda & Toyota to Western audiences. Sushi, karate, anime, etc weren’t ubiquitous & widespread to US & English speaking nations as they are today. So this show had really big shoes to fill.
They didn’t just meet expectations they surpassed them with this masterful remake. Everything from the sets to the costumes to the cinematography are top notch but it’s the great story & incredible acting that ties it all together & makes it so visceral & emotional.
By the way I noticed your mailing address is in the state of Victoria. As Aussies, you two should have great pride in the hugely influential & groundbreaking Mad Max franchise written by the mad scientist director George Miller. I don’t know if you two live in Melbourne but Mad Max 1 was filmed around Melbourne & The Road Warrior or Mad Mad 2 was shot at Broken Hill (I think it’s part of NSW) which is north & slightly west of Melbourne. I don’t believe you two have seen any of the Mad Max movies which had a huge hand in creating the post-apocalyptic movie genre. There were 3 Mad Max films in the 70’s-80’s & the 2 new ones. The backstory to 2015’s Fury Road is actualky incredible because it was delayed for years but became an instant classic & one of the best films ever. George Miller has been one of the most important filmmakers & Australian filmmakers who put the nascent Australian tv & film industry on the map, so to speak. After you react to Shogun, I think you two should journey into the Mad Max world which heavily influenced Fallout. As Aussies, George Miller & Mad Max should be a huge point of pride for you. I don’t think you guys have reacted to them yet, but maybe I’m wrong. Just my humble suggestion & request.
Enjoy the ride that is Shogun. 🙂👍

28:32 Historically, and to this day, many professional sailors can't swim. Better to drown quickly than tread water for a half a day and then drown anyways.

Spontaneous poetry was a thing. Even in Europe at one point. The Japanese still revere poetry. At least far more than we do in the western world.

This show is very down to earth and it shows a side of samurai that is not what we are used to: Samurai were allowed to kill anyone who disrespect them, they abused their power, not all of them were the honorable warriors that we like to consume in the western. Any Japanese can tell ya that the honorable Samurai was true but also exagerated because we loved that in the west.

The best TV show I've watched in a while. Really excellent and is historically accurate for the most part, outside of some names and some other details, which is an amalgamation of different things and traditions/time periods. No complaints on that though, as it is television, not a documentary.

Don't know if anyone mentioned this to you, but this isn't the first TV version of Shogun, in the original miniseries/movie of this show, "Rodriguez" was played by the same actor that played Gimli in The Lord of the Rings - and he did such an AMAZING job in the original Shogun series, amazing actor.

Sanada San's SHOGUN is such an amazing series. I read the show was reviewed a second time (the script) because it was not deemed good enough, and finally settled on the final version for Season 1 that ended. Guys - i honestly wish there are more than 10 episodes just so they can squeeze in more of the book...because as we know adaptations certainly take liberties at the expense of something due to budget / time. Nevertheless...all the episodes are beautiful. Cinematography top shelf. I've never felt like that since the very best parts of GOT (insert your fav / most impactful / emotional season & episode). I wish i get to experience it all over again, fresh ! Believe me you guys will be at the edge of your seats.

Hello. My name is Sho, and I am Japanese. I just wanted to suggest you guys read the book Shogun by John Clavelle. It's quite good, but it's not historically accurate. Basically Portugal was a bunch of assholes back in the day, they started the slave trade in africa, they started a bunch of wars trying to spread the catholic church throughout the world. The main character in Shogun is supposed to be from the Dutch East India Trading Company, and the navigator "pilot" is an Englishman working for them. He's supposed to be the only English guy among a group of Dutch. He becomes more sophisticated learning Japanese culture, and later comes to hate his own men, seeing them as savages. The guy who's supposed to represent Tokugawa in this series, he wants to learn from the english guy about naval warfare and shipbuilding, so that he can create a navy and conquer china and unite all of Japan.

It's interesting watching you here, in the early part of the show - you haven't adjusted yet to where the show is. Blackthorn is in an alien world, no different to if this was an episode of Star Trek. He - and you, and me when I first watched it - hasn't got ANYTHING in common with these people. They don't share the most basic ideas of life and morals. Things that you and I and he think are obvious, fundamental, beyond argument, are just completely unknown to the Japanese. Killing yourself and your child for shaming your lord is an honourable act, to them (as much as we find it horrific). You'll get it, don't worry - you'll come to see how they think and feel. And it's a fascinating journey.
Toronaga is Ned Stark, if Ned had an actual fucking clue about how the game is played.
