This was my first deck I had to come back and watch this again for nostalgia. I highly suggest this deck for first-timers, it's a lot of fun an the best thing about budget decks is that you can always upgrade them later on.
Dear Jumbo Commander, can you please start a Budget series?! I'm not sure of the best price cap, but maybe it could rotate between $50, $100, and $200 or something. All I know is that I love your videos, and, usually, your decks are $300+.

one card that i had in mind, in case you don't want Ruric Thar to attack but you want to keep him on board for his ability, is Throne of Tarkir. 4 drop equipment, 3 to equip, equipped creature gains defender an "2, tap: other creatures you control gain +X/+X and Trample until end of turn, where X is this creatures power." That's a double Overrun for 2 mana!! Awesome for a creature heavy deck. Also, it costs less then $0.15!

Sooooo much love for this deck. I think the skill of a brewer is shown when you can put self imposed limits on and still build a competitive and cohesive deck
Hiya Jumbo, Loved this video! I hope to see more like this as its kinda fun to play budget as it doesn't feel so...intense when playing our competitive decks back in our play group. We even decided to have everyone make a commander deck with budgets of about 20 to 50 bucks and its actually even more fun as we see more and more different stuff!

Hi Jumbo! Excellent video, always good to see more budget decks showing their power! I've watched the video till the end and have one question. How often do are you dealing 6 damage to yourself because of the non-creature spells in the deck? - David
I have only played a handful of games so I don't have a lot of data points. It only happened once and that was for a really important spell (wave of vitriol). The wave dealt 6 to me and destroyed my monument BUT it still wrecked everyone else WAY more.
I have a pretty low budget ruric tar deck, and most often I take 6 dammage to put down a dammage doubler, so that the next player will take 12, or a big draw spell. So perhaps I'd take around 12 dmg on avarage.
I often only take...18 or so damage throughout the game. I do have a couple of really powerful lifegains, though, like engulfing slagwurm ($0.80, whenever it becomes blocked or blocks, destroy the other creature at the end of the combat, you gain life equal to that creatures toughness) and putting shadowspear (expensive $7.11, equipped creature gets +1/+1 trample and lifelink) on ruric thar, which usually is enough to counteract the life drop. Edit: Especially since if ruric thar has lifelink, it counteracts the damage that he deals to you, as you gain the same amount as you lose. Honestly, if you can find a bugdet way to slap lifelink onto that beast of a commander, TAKE IT. No questions asked. Edit end. I realize that this was 2 years ago, and you may have already moved past ruric thar. I'm commenting anyways.
Jumbo, bro, I am by far the biggest spender on cardboard in my playgroup and I win a lot of games. Sometimes people will say it's just because I spend more $ and have more powerful cards. So when I saw this deck tech I immediately bought the pieces I didn't have and built it. Just piloted it to victory in a 5 player pod. Was awesome talking smack to everyone about how expensive their cards were. Yahenni player drops a Cabal Coffers and I'm like "whew! Big $ grip, you could buy two of my decks with that $" lmao. Warmonger Hellkite was an all star forcing attacks and people didn't want to attack into me because of Ruric and whatever else I played that turn. Zealous Conscripts stealing a Sigarda to kill him with it sealed the deal. Was some of the most fun I've had in a while. Keep up the good work!
Took me a bit to get to this video, but I'm really happy I did. I have a friend who's looking at getting started in Commander and I think I might buy this deck for him. It's super budget but also pretty competent and relatively easy to understand too. Thanks a bunch!
this is a great deck ! A low budget makes you think twice about cards, but challenges you all the more to become more creative with the limits you have. So definitely like to see more of those vids.

I have 6 pauper commander decks and 2 60 card pauper decks (monoblack control and Elves). My friend has a pauper gauntlet with ... maybe 40 decks ... I love the format but I don't know if I have enough experience to give solid insight.
Love the budget deck, great for both a new player to try the format and for experienced commander players to build real quick. What I love about these budget decks as well is how flexible they can be in regards to upgrades if you do want to put more money into them.

4:20 Radha's mana can only be used for flash-creatures or spells (not wanted in this deck) because after attacking the mana is gone ... its just a good looking ramp-elf :D
I just pulled a foil Ruric Thar from my Masters 25 pack and initially felt bad that I got such a cheap rare foil. Now, I may build this deck around him and get to show off my foil commander, so thanks for putting together this cool budget deck!

Jumbo, Was introduced to you via Command Zone and really loved your insite to the format. This was the first video I saw of yours and I had to immediately put this deck together. It is really nice to see options to build powerful decks without having to drop a lot of $. Please keep up the content. Have you thought of distributing audio versions of your content to go with the TH-cam content for those that would like to listen while commuting?
Kinda just learned about the whole gruul mind set and found the 30 dollar gruul deck box at my local game store has most of the base cards you have here plus a few i think may work as well! loved the video thanks so much!
That is how I bought my version (and I still had to add some non-deck cards to shipments to reach a minimum). I obviously went for the LOWEST possible. Someone said they bought the deck for $22 shipped which I think is still pretty solid.
After several failed attempts at buying a complete edh deck from my lgs I switched to online orders quite a while ago. There is nothing more frustrating than spending all day looking through thousands of commons to end up like twenty cards at least short. I like taking my time and spending hours creating my deck, not buying it lol.
Would love to see a update for the deck. Like what if you had an extra $20-30 bucks? Or suggested upgrades if you find the cards? I got lucky and added a vorinclex and old emrakul that I happened to get lucky and pulled from packs.
I built this deck on MGO and found out the hard way that Radha's "Add 2 Mana" effect only takes effect during your combat phase to cast instant effects. It can't be used for the secondary main phase to cast a spell like a creature.
Jumbo Commander built a Voltron, but i used Oketra. Im having a blast, because my tokens are just as big a threat as my commander. 3-0 with it this week 😤
The best part about this deck is the upgradablity is easy to see. Replace ok draw card with a better draw spell. Bigger and better beater. Def going to make this deck.
Awesome vid, just bought all the deck through TCGplayer Direct, convenient for cheaper cards like this. Also, Lifecrafter's Bestiary went down to $1, so I definitely recommend adding it in.
I got 4 of this deck and I train people with it when they start commander and sometimes my pro friends and I use them in a four way it’s fun thanks allot
That's fun! My Rurik Thar runs three non-creature spells- Primal Surge + Where Ancients Tread + Warstorm Surge. I'll keep that Primal Surge in my hand if I am not feeling cruel, but that is generally not when you are playing Rurik Thar anyhow...

Cool list! A few suggestions that might make it a little better without much more budget. Hellrider, rubblebelt raiders, and ogre battledriver are all really solid in creature focused decks. Swiftfoot boots will help protect ruric thar once he hits the board, and rampent growth will help get him faster. Again, not cheap enough for this ultra budget but all still sub 1$ cards.
Check out possibility storm for an enchantment if you like the chaos aspect. Basically it gets rid of instants and sorceries exiling them, then having the player search for another and playing that one instead.
sweet budget deck. quick note, ulvenwald tracker does the targeting so it can't take out mother of runes, as moru can just give herself pro green. and the way fights work, both targets have to be legal when it resolves for the fight to happen (unlike many other abilities that will still resolve to the best of their ability when it has multiple targets and some become illegal)

My friends and I have been having a fun time making commander decks that are $20 or less, with a commander worth $2 or less. My Sigarda, Heron's Grace deck is a lot of fun.
This is the kind of green/red deck i have been looking for with an ogre commander in it :D nice. Although i kind of wanna make an ogre themed deck as well (i just like giants, orges and orcs ^^) But most of the ogres i know are simply x/x creatures with no interesting abilities (as far as i know of course). Cool deck and it seems rly interesting :) saving money for a world trip though so even budget decks are a no-go atm.
How about Karona, False God deck that focuses on buffing her upon enchantments and equipments and let your opponents take each other out for you with her?
I would love to see some more voltron decks especially with a five color commander. It is funny considering the robot voltron is made of five different colored lions lol.
and the Vow aura cycle from the first commander set too. They all give +2/+2 and cant attack you or planeswalkers plus they give mostly relevant abilities (:
Jumbo Commander It is a part of my Yidris Wizard tribal deck. This combo has won twice, and the other win was using Galecaster and about 10 other wizards to clear everyone else’s battlefield. Yidris + Sunbird + Rashmi = a most exciting game of commander. Free spells are the best.
Still getting mileage out of this deck in 2024. Last week, I sat down with a pretty casual group, first time playing them so I fully intended to just go it slow and amass a board state over time. Opening hand was forest, dual land, Sol Ring, Llanowar Elves, Arbor Elf, Khenra Charioteer, Nullstone Gargoyle. Turn 3 Ruric Thar, one opponent is locked out of the game and the other is struggling to find an answer. Terrifying deck; I had to stress that I just had an amazing hand but the deck was sure part of it. I drew into Stalking Vengeance and Terastodon a handful of turns in and I had to actively let off the gas not to just run everyone over without a fight.
Wow, very cool to see this after I posted on your Sidisi video and how that inspired me to rebuild my Ruric Thar deck, which was one of the first commander decks I tried to build. Also funny how many of the cards you mentioned I had put in this deck already (somehow with Ruric I couldn't commit to buying pricey cards anyway, haha). Moulder Slug was already in my deck, but it's cool to see all the other janky inexpensive cards that work well with Ruric. BTW, what's the "ugly" art for shatterstorm? I only know the original art since that's when I started playing.
Looks like both the revised edition and 5th edition go for the same price and are both white bordered. I personally still like the revised edition art cuz it's the same as the antiquities art. The 5th and 6th edition is definitely uglier in my book too! Funny how Bane of Progress is too pricey this deck. Cool idea though if my playgroup was down to all make decks under $15-$20.
I like the idea of a $40 budget so someone new can buy a precon and play that while more experienced players can go deep on making the most out of their budget.
If you're a fan of this deck you could also play my other favourite budget Gruul commander, BOBORYGMOS ENRAGED! Bobo is an awesome deck that is a bunch of fun to play, 25ish ramp/land grab spells, some card draw in harmonize, or life's legacy, one or two massive bombs that also like lands (Looking at you omnath locus of rage) and some utility in crucible of worlds snek, furnace of rath effects and molten vortex/seismic assault. Throwing lands at blue mages faces is always fun! Gruul...or die!
I own a borborigmos enraged deck. It's a lot of fun. I find that I really rely on extra land drop effects like exploration, burgeoning, and Oracle. I think it could be budget as well
Molimo, maro-sorcerer with a high land count and creatures base off land count (Allosauros Rider, Gael’s Liege, Kalonian Twingrove, ext.) and land fetch cards (Explosive Vegetation, Font of Furtility, Search for Tomorrow. Ext.) I built a few for players and the not bad and super cheap
Hey so I know this is pretty old video. And I have made some changes to the deck and made it a little bit more expensive but this is been one of my favorite decks I’ve ever played.
Hopefully, they have good prices for bulk cards. Some stores say: Minimum on cards is $0.25. I know if you talk to other commander players they might just hook you up with half the deck out of their scraps :)
A friend gave me 20$ and what bulk red/green cards he had and asked me to make him a gruul commander deck. Using this as a template. I'm throwing a few other cards like savage ventmaw and blood rush cards to give him combat tricks to keep ruric on the field.
I'm really glad you're trying this out. Let me know how this performs in your meta. I am a little sad it's as expensive as 30 pounds. Does that seem pretty much what you expected for something that's, more realistically, $25 USD?
Yeah its about right, I think magic cards are typically a bit more expensive in the UK from my experience. I am head in next weekend so I'll let you know how it stands ☺️
I usually don't buy other peoples decks, i have way more fun making my own. Thing is that price tag on it is so awesome. To be honest i was kinda thinking about buying it, but not too sure, but then we came to the last section when you started talking about all the hilarious control and hate cards and i am sure that i have to buy this right now
I've built this deck , using a couple proxys in casual play until I got the cards i needed. Out of the dozen or so games I've played I've only taken the 6 damage 3-4 times. Also I bought the cards ( 90%) from cardkingdom.com, spent about $23

I think it's an awesome loaner deck or gift. If you have a large collection it can be even easier to throw together.

One of the coolest creatures in my Ruric Thar is Obsidian Fireheart. Placing blaze counters on everyone's lands is a blast.

I totally agree. If I could rebuild this deck with some new Gruul cards I think it would be even better. But it might end up being like $40.
You'll have to buy this deck on TCGPlayer. LGS's can't afford to sort/stock 7-cent cards. Our store does 25-cent commons, 50-cent unc, $1 on rares.

I think that upgrading decks is super fun. That's the great part about something so cheap; that you can constantly be trading up and tinkering.
Jumbo Commander built a Voltron, but i used Oketra. Im having a blast, because my tokens are just as big a threat as my commander. 3-0 with it this week 😤
The best part about this deck is the upgradablity is easy to see. Replace ok draw card with a better draw spell. Bigger and better beater. Def going to make this deck.

I got 4 of this deck and I train people with it when they start commander and sometimes my pro friends and I use them in a four way it’s fun thanks allot
That's fun! My Rurik Thar runs three non-creature spells- Primal Surge + Where Ancients Tread + Warstorm Surge. I'll keep that Primal Surge in my hand if I am not feeling cruel, but that is generally not when you are playing Rurik Thar anyhow...
If you add a Sekki,Season's Guide to the deck you can go infinite damage with Warstorm Surge or Pandemonium:P

Cool list! A few suggestions that might make it a little better without much more budget. Hellrider, rubblebelt raiders, and ogre battledriver are all really solid in creature focused decks. Swiftfoot boots will help protect ruric thar once he hits the board, and rampent growth will help get him faster. Again, not cheap enough for this ultra budget but all still sub 1$ cards.

Check out possibility storm for an enchantment if you like the chaos aspect. Basically it gets rid of instants and sorceries exiling them, then having the player search for another and playing that one instead.
Good call. Also with so few spells that aren't creatures we can reliably cast the effect we want through the storm if we build our deck correctly.

sweet budget deck. quick note, ulvenwald tracker does the targeting so it can't take out mother of runes, as moru can just give herself pro green. and the way fights work, both targets have to be legal when it resolves for the fight to happen (unlike many other abilities that will still resolve to the best of their ability when it has multiple targets and some become illegal)

This is the kind of green/red deck i have been looking for with an ogre commander in it :D nice. Although i kind of wanna make an ogre themed deck as well (i just like giants, orges and orcs ^^) But most of the ogres i know are simply x/x creatures with no interesting abilities (as far as i know of course). Cool deck and it seems rly interesting :) saving money for a world trip though so even budget decks are a no-go atm.

There are those conspiracy auras that prevent the creature from attacking you. I think that's a sound plan.

Dualcaster Mage (especially cast with Twinflame) is one of my favorites.
This is such a solid 2 card combo that is a single color AND also super budget. I like this more than kiki-twin
Jumbo Commander It is a part of my Yidris Wizard tribal deck. This combo has won twice, and the other win was using Galecaster and about 10 other wizards to clear everyone else’s battlefield. Yidris + Sunbird + Rashmi = a most exciting game of commander. Free spells are the best.

Still getting mileage out of this deck in 2024. Last week, I sat down with a pretty casual group, first time playing them so I fully intended to just go it slow and amass a board state over time. Opening hand was forest, dual land, Sol Ring, Llanowar Elves, Arbor Elf, Khenra Charioteer, Nullstone Gargoyle. Turn 3 Ruric Thar, one opponent is locked out of the game and the other is struggling to find an answer. Terrifying deck; I had to stress that I just had an amazing hand but the deck was sure part of it. I drew into Stalking Vengeance and Terastodon a handful of turns in and I had to actively let off the gas not to just run everyone over without a fight.
Wow, very cool to see this after I posted on your Sidisi video and how that inspired me to rebuild my Ruric Thar deck, which was one of the first commander decks I tried to build. Also funny how many of the cards you mentioned I had put in this deck already (somehow with Ruric I couldn't commit to buying pricey cards anyway, haha). Moulder Slug was already in my deck, but it's cool to see all the other janky inexpensive cards that work well with Ruric.
BTW, what's the "ugly" art for shatterstorm? I only know the original art since that's when I started playing.

Looks like both the revised edition and 5th edition go for the same price and are both white bordered. I personally still like the revised edition art cuz it's the same as the antiquities art. The 5th and 6th edition is definitely uglier in my book too! Funny how Bane of Progress is too pricey this deck. Cool idea though if my playgroup was down to all make decks under $15-$20.
I like the idea of a $40 budget so someone new can buy a precon and play that while more experienced players can go deep on making the most out of their budget.

If you're a fan of this deck you could also play my other favourite budget Gruul commander, BOBORYGMOS ENRAGED! Bobo is an awesome deck that is a bunch of fun to play, 25ish ramp/land grab spells, some card draw in harmonize, or life's legacy, one or two massive bombs that also like lands (Looking at you omnath locus of rage) and some utility in crucible of worlds snek, furnace of rath effects and molten vortex/seismic assault. Throwing lands at blue mages faces is always fun!

I own a borborigmos enraged deck. It's a lot of fun. I find that I really rely on extra land drop effects like exploration, burgeoning, and Oracle. I think it could be budget as well
Molimo, maro-sorcerer with a high land count and creatures base off land count (Allosauros Rider, Gael’s Liege, Kalonian Twingrove, ext.) and land fetch cards (Explosive Vegetation, Font of Furtility, Search for Tomorrow. Ext.)

Hopefully, they have good prices for bulk cards. Some stores say: Minimum on cards is $0.25. I know if you talk to other commander players they might just hook you up with half the deck out of their scraps :)

A friend gave me 20$ and what bulk red/green cards he had and asked me to make him a gruul commander deck. Using this as a template. I'm throwing a few other cards like savage ventmaw and blood rush cards to give him combat tricks to keep ruric on the field.

Yeah its about right, I think magic cards are typically a bit more expensive in the UK from my experience. I am head in next weekend so I'll let you know how it stands ☺️
I usually don't buy other peoples decks, i have way more fun making my own. Thing is that price tag on it is so awesome. To be honest i was kinda thinking about buying it, but not too sure, but then we came to the last section when you started talking about all the hilarious control and hate cards and i am sure that i have to buy this right now

I've built this deck , using a couple proxys in casual play until I got the cards i needed. Out of the dozen or so games I've played I've only taken the 6 damage 3-4 times.
Also I bought the cards ( 90%) from cardkingdom.com, spent about $23
I have like, half of these cards already, hadn't even thought about using them together like this. I could probably build the rest for under $5....
Traded a foil ruric thar. Time to build!
