What time of year is this and what are the penalties for fishing without a license? How strictly and frequently are the rules enforced around Bayview Jetty if you know?
I've never been approached and inspected ever when I was living on the coast. I always have a license, but there is simply too much coastline to enforce for the rules to be practical. If you cant afford the license, but need to eat to survive, that situation sucks. Good luck, and no hate. People barely making it because of covid nowadays.
Oh, and avoid the overcrowded docks, never caught shit there. Everything was off of rocks, jettys, hard to get to places. Probably why I was never approached for inspection.

I had to laugh at myself when I was looking back at the footage for this. My excitement was almost too much, but I planned a 5-7 day trip to the coast specifically to catch my first lingcod. I would have never guessed I’d get to my first spot and just start catching fish left and right. I ended the trip with between 12-14 caught and just kept two.. not all from this spot. I’d have to say that was a good start :) Can’t wait to get out this spring!!
I'm actually going to go fish Newport tomorrow and I remembered that you had a video or two in Newport so I'm here watching it again to get some tips. tightline see out there.

Thank you for taking the time to explain your steps and reasons in a down to earth and easy to absorb fashion. Your videos cut all the BS and get right down to how to catch then get topped off with actually seeing the fruits of some quality technique. Definitely got a new subscriber here. I used to fish the Jetty in Half Moon Bay California before the internet and had no idea that swim baits could render such incredible results but I'm inspired to go back out there (it's been years) with the techniques you've brought to light as I'm sure that they will work out there as well. Of course it’s fun catching fish but I like knowing that these videos are actually helping others out as well so they can get out there and potentially do better. Haha I wish I had known about some of this years ago!! I appreciate the feedback. Knowing these videos are helping is what keeps me doing them. I had to give a lot of classes when I was in the military, so I think that helps with getting the info out there in a way that most people would easily understand. I enjoyed making that jetty video and have been happy to see that it has been starting to take off after a slow start. 8sweetpea2 - any of those rocky areas are definitely worth investigating. You never know. Spring time is usually the best to find them from shore but there are still some around. I just caught one up at barview jetty the other day. Good luck 🎣
Fishing the Oregon coast is the best bottom fishing I've ever done and many times , , then its fish fry buddy it dont get any better. Especially if u get crab to go with dinner , I've caught tuna halibut , on gesky fish boat captain Ken they call that crusty old man
I have a black sharpie line 22” up from the bottom of my rod so I can measure the fish before bringing it up the rocks. Great vid, great channel! Cheers, maybe I’ll see ya in Newport!
Buck Owens used to come here and fish. He sure knew what, when, where, how, and which way. Next time in Bakersfield, look up what you guys need to with Tom Brumley on pedal steel. They both wanted not ling or lingcod, but they wanted these kingfidh and mackerel. They wrote many good songs about it.

Out of all the PNW fishing and foraging youtubers that I watch, you are the most fun. Im selling my house and buying a travel trailer and then hitting the Oregon and Washington coast. Are the rockfish you're catching not the same rockfish as what is caught in Alaska?

Your videos got me and my brother into jetty fishing and it’s instantly addicting! Got to Barview an hour before high tide the first time and it was just fish after fish. No lingcod but a ton of black bass! We’ve been to the Barview and the Newport jetties quite a few times since and lemme tell you we’re never going back to regular surf fishing.
Glad to hear these videos got you guys pointed in another direction that has produced fish!! I love surf fishing but you can definitely find more action around the rocks.. Keep at it and you will find a lingcod. Thanks for watching the videos!

From one Nick to another, keep the awesome content going!!! Jetty fishing is one of my all time favorites. First time I got taken out I caught a ling and from that point on it was game over for me. Now I’m driving out to Westport almost on a weekly basis. Definitely want to head down your way and fish some new water!

AnglingAddictsPNW , use a dropshot method and Berkeley Gulp jerkshad as bait. It’s my secret to slaying them. When you do get stuck, just a slight tug and the weight comes straight off. Use a 1/2- 1 ounce bank weight.
Gotta love a sunrise and a cast. Did that when I was perch fishing with a buddy awhile back. Awesome video! I'll react the same way when I catch my first cod 🤙🏾

Dave Prill - oh man that’s a bummer! I was down there the week leading up to the shutdown. Mon- thurs it was a ghost town. Friday the swarms of people started coming in and I had to get out of there. 5 days of isolation was pretty awesome, and the fishing, as you can see was amazing. Hey, I’m in Oregonian from Hillsboro and I’m always fishing on the coast do a video on Barview jetty I caught my first ling cod there as well as tons of black rockfish/black bass parking is a couple bucks, but it’s nothing crazy. Also, I would love to know the spot you’re fishing in this video.
Have you ever thought about bringing along a burlap bag to put your fish in and that is a nice Lings and be very careful when you're fishing on the rocks still a good job
Corey Arendt - thank you. The one and only time I used a burlap bag I was up in Alaska doing some coho fishing. I don’t keep fish all too often. I fish too much to keep everything. I do bring a cooler with me though, so if I do keep something I’ve got a nice cool spot for it... it was pretty sketchy fishing on the rocks, definitely have to be careful.
Sorry to tell you... but on 1 half day charter trip out of Depoe Bay Oregon, after captain telling us don't expect the ling to be biting that day,, that's all the wife and I caught nothing else the whole trip. We caught 11 between us, 9 were keeper size.

Thats some adventurous fishing right there I thought your reel was going to bust cranking up that ling may i suggest the Diawa BG MQ it has tons of torque and raw power that can even bring up a goliath gruper from the deep ive been testing it out on monster bat rays it works like a champ

Order a Cliff Gaff also called a Flying Gaff (edit: Flying Gaff is an entirely different thing, but sometimes Cliff Gaff is referred to as one erroneously), to land larger fish on a tall ledge like that.
Great video! Maybe in future videos you could bring a bucket/rope to lower the fish back down into the water more safely? Just an idea! Keep up the great content & tight lines! 🙌🎣🤙
That would be a good idea, though I did find a better way to access the water from lower so I wouldn’t have to drop them. I was out for 6 days doing videos during this so I couldn’t keep but what I could eat myself. If I were to go back I think I’d just keep what I’m allowed. I did kinda cringe every time I dropped a fish back when I watched this. It was a good learning experience. I’d prefer not to toss back a fish just to have it die. Thanks for watching

It's always surprised me how well white or plain yellow works for Lings and other bottom fish here. they use a cheap aluminum crab ring as a net when they fish off high piers in Florida. just an idea.

From one Nick to another, keep the awesome content going!!! Jetty fishing is one of my all time favorites. First time I got taken out I caught a ling and from that point on it was game over for me. Now I’m driving out to Westport almost on a weekly basis. Definitely want to head down your way and fish some new water!

AnglingAddictsPNW , use a dropshot method and Berkeley Gulp jerkshad as bait. It’s my secret to slaying them. When you do get stuck, just a slight tug and the weight comes straight off. Use a 1/2- 1 ounce bank weight.
Gotta love a sunrise and a cast. Did that when I was perch fishing with a buddy awhile back. Awesome video! I'll react the same way when I catch my first cod 🤙🏾

Nice work Nick. If you had a 20- 22’ boat you’d be killing it year round. Depot bay has a ton of rock formations with tons of ling.

Im going to do a week or two in mid December this year just cruising the coast, fishing crabbing etc. I can hardly wait.

Maniac Gameplay & Walkthrough - if I’m going for lingcod then I’m always going to start around the Depoe Bay Area and work towards Newport. That area is a lot more rocky. You can find them at the jetties too.
I know you can fish over the wall at Depo Bay but never liked a lot of tourist staring at me. Lol.

Dave Prill - oh man that’s a bummer! I was down there the week leading up to the shutdown. Mon- thurs it was a ghost town. Friday the swarms of people started coming in and I had to get out of there. 5 days of isolation was pretty awesome, and the fishing, as you can see was amazing. Hey, I’m in Oregonian from Hillsboro and I’m always fishing on the coast do a video on Barview jetty I caught my first ling cod there as well as tons of black rockfish/black bass parking is a couple bucks, but it’s nothing crazy. Also, I would love to know the spot you’re fishing in this video.

Have you ever thought about bringing along a burlap bag to put your fish in and that is a nice Lings and be very careful when you're fishing on the rocks still a good job
Corey Arendt - thank you. The one and only time I used a burlap bag I was up in Alaska doing some coho fishing. I don’t keep fish all too often. I fish too much to keep everything. I do bring a cooler with me though, so if I do keep something I’ve got a nice cool spot for it... it was pretty sketchy fishing on the rocks, definitely have to be careful.

Sorry to tell you... but on 1 half day charter trip out of Depoe Bay Oregon, after captain telling us don't expect the ling to be biting that day,, that's all the wife and I caught nothing else the whole trip. We caught 11 between us, 9 were keeper size.

Thats some adventurous fishing right there I thought your reel was going to bust cranking up that ling may i suggest the Diawa BG MQ it has tons of torque and raw power that can even bring up a goliath gruper from the deep ive been testing it out on monster bat rays it works like a champ

Order a Cliff Gaff also called a Flying Gaff (edit: Flying Gaff is an entirely different thing, but sometimes Cliff Gaff is referred to as one erroneously), to land larger fish on a tall ledge like that.
Great video! Maybe in future videos you could bring a bucket/rope to lower the fish back down into the water more safely? Just an idea! Keep up the great content & tight lines! 🙌🎣🤙
That would be a good idea, though I did find a better way to access the water from lower so I wouldn’t have to drop them. I was out for 6 days doing videos during this so I couldn’t keep but what I could eat myself. If I were to go back I think I’d just keep what I’m allowed.
I did kinda cringe every time I dropped a fish back when I watched this. It was a good learning experience. I’d prefer not to toss back a fish just to have it die. Thanks for watching

It's always surprised me how well white or plain yellow works for Lings and other bottom fish here. they use a cheap aluminum crab ring as a net when they fish off high piers in Florida. just an idea.
