- Scott and the Silhouette Crew are back in Newport Oregon jetty fishing for sea bass and lingcod. But on this trip, the crew is primarily targeting ling cod and how to catch them on not only the South Jetty, but the North Jetty as well. Scott shares some great tactics on how to catch them with both the dead stick method and with plastics.

Love the video, very pleased that you share so much good information. It made me a little sad however. I used to live in Gold Beach and my brother and I we're always on the jetties. However at 75 years old I can no longer Rock hop. I can only fish vicariously now through people like you. Don't get me wrong I do a lot of fishing but just not on the jetty.
Thank you! Sorry to hear that. Have you ever fished the Garibaldi/Barview jetty? You don’t have to walk but a very short distance to fish the rocks there.. And there’s quite a few rockfish to be had there. Much easier to access than Newports
I use those spinner baits often used for Largemouth Bass, the 2oz variety, to catch lingcod off the rocks--white 7" grub, white skirt and 1" spinner. You don't get snagged that often since the hook is guarded by the spinner wire, so it'll just bounce around if it contacts the rocks. Great video :)
That's a cool idea! I'll have to try that next trip down. I do get a ton of snags out there. I get most of them out with that 40 lb test. Sometimes it pays tho.. Twice now I've had lingcod pull me out of a snag. But I do donate my share of gear. Thank you!

Jesse Gaz right on! Glad to help. I’ve had really good luck using these same tactics on every jetty I’ve fished on the Oregon coast and taking this show up to Washington and getting after some rockfish up there soon. All of the people I’ve met are really friendly out there, even the old timers once they warm up to you. Bring out donuts to sweet’n em up! That’s a tactic not in the videos, ha, ha! Good luck!!

We caught a Lingcod, Tillamook bay jetty. The Women said they wouldn't eat it. After convincing them, they said it was the best fish they ever had. 😆

Yeah, there’s South Beach State Park just south of the jetty. I don’t recall what they charge for a campsite, but there’s a shower station as well.

DjTurtlez Gaming yep! Some times we’ve done better on just a small 3 inch “white” curly tail grub as well. Take both of you go!

It isn’t just the green on those jetty rocks, it’s the black stuff too. Be careful and plan accordingly when you go out past the larger boulders on the Newport jetty because you’ll never make it back if it starts raining.
For sure! It’s no joke going out to the end. It’s a fair weather journey for sure. We are down on the jetty now, killing it with as good a weather as you could hope for. Good advice my friend.

Bummer!, I missed a good day on the jetty! I can’t complain too much, I went and caught a bucket of shad this morning so I have plenty of cut bait for the next time I’m in Newport. Maybe I’ll see you guys out there next time.

between fishing and hunting , we brought in 1.5 billion dollars in oregon revenue. Youd think we would have hatcherys everywhere and EASY access out on jettys and other good fish spots for the seniors and semi disabled people. WE have paid so much all our lives and now at 70 , i cant leap and jump like i used to >
Sorry to hear that. You might try Barview jetty out of Garibaldi. You don’t have to walk but 100 yards or less to fish the rocks for rockfish and lingcod there. I’ve done well fishing Barview..
I was out on the north jetty yesterday. First time fishing the ocean.

@@SilhouetteOutdoors i got out pretty late in the day and wasnt able to get past the kelp mats on the slackwater side. So i threw a couple of casts out into the north side. I didnt get anything. To be honest there is a riptide there and i dont know what im doing yet.
@@dillonmclaughlin402 try hitting it at high tide next time. Low tide when the kelp is showing is rarely productive

What type of rod action/reel do you recommend to fish for lingcod? I have a 9'0 medium heavy okuma rox combo. Would that be enough? Thanks 👍
Absolutley, I highly recommend a med-heavy rod 8'6" or longer so you can get leverage on those fish when they try to run you in the rocks, which they will and using at a minimum 40 lb. mono. A big ling will bust you off less than that, those rocks are sharp out there.

We make it to newport every summer for crabbing off the pier. Haven't tried jetty fishing yet but will next time. Is there a good place near the newport area to pump your own sandshrimp?
I couldn’t tell you where on the sand-shrimp. But I do know the local guy that supplies the Marina store gets them very close by.

Curious question. Why are you not using braided instead of mono? I'm selling my house and buying an rv and am going to hit the Oregon and Washington coasts. Trying to gain as much knowledge from you guys before I get there. Thanks!
Braid does not do good in rocks. You’ll get your line busted so fast when these lingcod run you down into the rocks. Braid is more for open water vertical jigging or trolling where a fish won’t take you into cover.
@@SilhouetteOutdoors I almost immediately after commenting thought of the first time I used it in a lake with a lot of stumps and brush. I can see how your type of cover would wreck hell on it too.
@@Adventures_Of_Reel_Nauti ya, I don’t use less than 40 lb mono when I get after these lingcod. They run straight into the rocks as soon as you hook them. They trash your line regardless. But you can usually muscle them out with mono

Very nice! There's good crab fishing off the South jetty as well if you are planning on just bank fishing. We do really well with crab snares out there off the South side. I'm gearing up for hunting season, maybe see you next trip. Good luck out there!!

Chad Worley it seems to change almost every trip. But the south jetty seems to be the most consistent. I did much better on the South over the 4th of July this year. Sea bass on the north side of that south jetty and an incoming tide seems to be better as well. If the weathers bad, it can get pretty dangerous on the North jetty. You definitely have to go almost all the way to the end of the North to fish. No difference on luck with lings on either jetty. Just patience and use big baits, don’t be afraid to change up tactics. I’ve caught a keeper every trip down over the years.

Chad Worley I’ll go all the way to the end if the weather is nice. I’ll go to the end and work my way back searching for a school of sea bass. Once you find a school, it’s typically easy to limit out. Don’t pigeon hole yourself to just one spot. Move around. The lings can be anywhere.. I’ve caught them off the end and back by where you park. I would say the last half of the jetty is the best, and both sides on high tide. It’s more of putting your time in for lingcod.

I try to make it an annual trip every year, either memorial weekend or my favorite, the 4th of July weekend. I apologize, just an Idaho boy trying to learn the lingo. I can sympathize, everyone pronounces Boise as “Boizee” here, lol! Tight lines my friend

Your pole for lingcod looks huge, did you say it was 9 feet? I went to England marine on the bay front and got hooked up with a great pole and stuff but the fellas passion was surf fishing (?) so that MAY be what I got hooked up with haha.
@@raerae4008 ya, I like the longer med-heavy rod. Those big lingcod love to try and run you down into the rocks, that leverage from the longer rod can definitely give you an edge.

Heather Hoen I fished both the north and south jetty out of Newport Oregon and was equally successful on both. Less people on the North jetty, but it’s a long trek out there.

Do people catch sharks from that jetty?
I have been fishing out there for about 10 years now, and I have never heard of one caught there. I believe you would need to go much further south to warmer water for sharks.

I just learned something new from an old but gold fisherman that some lingcod have worms in their meat and poisonous if they bite if you grab them in their mouth.
James Cabarr ya, don’t really want to attempt preparing and eating them raw. Most have parasites on their skin, but yes, in the meat as well sometimes. Halibut can have them as well. Did not know they had a poisonous bite. I’ve been cut by their gills which are pretty sharp. But never any painful reaction from it. Those copper rockfish how ever will light you up! Myself and a friend have both been stuck by their gill plates and it’s like getting nailed by a wasp!

First and last video of yours I'll watch, learn how to release the fish properly.
Go north of Lincoln City, catch a Chinook, treat the salmon as you treat the lingcod and the local fisherman will eat your lunch.
Why not use a kayak to get to the end of the jetty?
Use a kayak and you've got a cooler, extra tackle, an extra rod and reel.
Not to mention a PFD that might save your bacon from a rogue wave.
Geezer65 the water is typically pretty rough around the end of that jetty in Newport. It’s rare to even see boats fishing close to the end of that jetty. Rock hopping out is about the only option.
He noted he was fishing the high tide. When that turns, someone in a kayak way toward the end is likely to get a personal greeting from the Coast Guard.
Why do you have to blow up "Newport" ? Why can't it just be jetty fishing . Nice lings though .

@@SilhouetteOutdoors I fish off the rocks often and rarely fish out there. The main concern i have is people getting hurt. That is not a place to screw around , I've witnessed a lot of tourists, fisherman and surfers put themselves in harm's way not properly reading the ocean or the forecast. . It looked like you picked the proper day but people do and have died on both jettys. I'm sure your well aware a little rain over those rocks turns it from sketch to deadly. Your editing is really good though and those are some fine lings. I typically only float fish off the rocks though jigs sometimes work when bait does not.
Joseph Vance I absolutely agree, that green moss is insanely slick when wet, in fact I slipped a bit on the trek out in the video and talked about being aware of it. I’ve seen paramedics rescuing folks off the rocks, it’s not for everyone and certainly nothing to be taken lightly. A good pair of shoes for rock hopping is a wise choice. But when the weathers decent, the reward can be a bucket full of very tasty rock fish. Thanks again, and good luck out there my friend.
If you live close to ware this video was shot then for fuck sake dont put out $ on trash ass inferior store baut Canadian Herring...3rd wk in February go jig them all fresh & ultra local, you got enuff big-big ones to share, you can litterally get a free seat on any halibut boat, i toe tagged & bagged just shy of 4 chest freezers full before having to quit for lack of anyware to put em, thare geneticly identical to what your bass have bin used to glutonizing on so they wont hesitate or be leery bout it + your 25lbs / 3/4ers of a bucket a day is free you dont need a boat its leagal to get em all night & if you stay till just after midnight your 50 lbs is free ! Really good crab bait aswell fozen solid in a bucket remove bucket & buck it up in long ribbons w/ chainsaw put a lb or 5 in a fine mesh bait bag & youl smoke any competition, ps ever try live herring for ling bait they have a cirtain nurotic skitzo twich to em when gently hooked 3/4ers of the way back on the upper half
I wish I lived closer!.. I just visit once or twice a year, so I’ve gota work with what’s available. I’ve only caught a couple lings on herring and seem to be smaller one’s. I found a larger offering gets a bigger bite. That would be cool to do though! Thanks for the info!
