Yes, he plays a great bad guy, BUT my all-time favorite role he played (and always will be) was "Buck" Compton in Band of Brothers.
He was fantastic in that role, and that may stand as the greatest series of all time!
Such an amazing show. My drill sergeants made our entire company watch it back when I went through basic in 08. Good times
I think the coolest part of that is the actual friendship he struck up with the real Buck Compton.
When I saw the thumbnail I thought 'oh it's Buck Compton!' - definitely not villainy 😆

I’ve never cared for Neal. Disliked him in fact. Which of course is a reflection of how well and how often he played a dislikable character. Now, I am speechless at how likable and admirable and incredible Neal McDonough the man truly is. Feeling a bit guilty in fact. I’ll never see him the same way again. Thanks to Mike, yet again.
The fact that he always played the bad guy and did it so well shows how good of an actor he is! I've always thought he did a great job and liked him as the villain

As an Army Vet, I was stationed in Belgium in 05-08. The surviving Gentlemen of Easy company came to do a reunion. We got to walk the woods of Bastogne and spend the day with them. Quite possibly my fondest memory of my career in the Army.
Bruh, that’s amazing. Not a year goes by that I don’t watch BOB. They captured lightening in a bottle and all the actors made it that much more meaningful, but you, sir, saw the real men. That’s more meaningful. Congrats;)
That is such an amazing HONOR to be in their presence and to have what sounds like an amazing experience with them!!! The battle of Bastogne is the best BOB episode. I can’t even imagine what they felt when walking through those woods. I always cry at the end of the episodes when they reminisce about the events.. ❤

His wife played his wife in Arrow, which I thought was sweet. The characters had a genuinely loving relationship, even though they were EVIL.

I grew up with Neal. I remember how good our high school drama club was under Mr. Sullivan. Neal is a great actor. What I am most honored to say is how good a person he is. My mother was a big bowler. After Neal became famous my mother said he would still come home and bowl and that he was so nice and he never changed. Always rooting for Neal. BHS did a great job doing The Hobbit and The Wizard of Oz.
I'm really curious... Barnstable High? I think I would have heard if it was Bourne, but maybe not - I'm older but I just found out Neal is a fellow Cape Codder. :) Never mind, I just got to the part about Hyannis. I was born there but spent my teen years in Sagamore. Thanks anyway, have a good' un.

This interview was better than any counseling session on how to appreciate life.
This may be my favorite episode of The Way I Heard It ever. From Jim Palmer (my own favorite pitcher of all time), to Neal's testimony, the entire episode was wonderful. It's just heart warming to know there are still famous people unashamed of their faith.

McDonough is a "villain" who you couldn't help but love. He was great in "Justified" and so many of his films. The fact that he never swore as a "bad guy" made all the more terrifying .

I usually hate watching podcast interviews. I can never make it through 10 minutes without falling asleep. But this was awesome. Neil is such a good and honest guy working in a cesspool industry of narcissists. He has my utmost respect for holding true to his principles even in the face of unemployment and being blacklisted.

Sixteen minutes in and without a doubt--best interview EVER! The scene in BoB when Buck drops his helmet is the most heart-rendering scene of the entire series.
McDonough is one of my favorite villains. I love how he can play evil and charming at the same time. I'm so glad he is also a good man.
I love the fact that Neal's favorite John Wayne movie is "The Cowboys". It is also my favorite Duke film and I have never heard anyone else say so... and getting to watch two of the coolest guys around banter and have an honest conversation is just a bonus.

I’ve always believed he’s such a great villain, because you can see a little humanity in his evil. He’s the best, no matter why.
I was reading the comments looking for this one. That role and so specifically that season is where I became a huge fan. I had to learn more about this man, started digging into him as a actor and then found all the other characters he played. This is such a great actor and humble guy.

Great actor. Amazing human. Met him at the Great Wolf Lodge in Washington state. Got a picture with him, myself and my 3 year old son. All in our swimming trunks.
First time Mike Rowe popped into my feed. Immediately subscribed. I just learned Neal is a Christian a couple months ago. I think times are changing and as dark as things are right now I feel the pendulum is starting to move toward a revival.

Neal is one of my favorite actors. The first thing I remember watching him in was Band of Brothers. I watched it with the guys from my unit in 2003 on a laptop sitting in the back of a M577 track while in Iraq. Every night, we would gather up around it and watch one single episode, plus the commentaries from the real life soldiers. We made it last as long as we could. Some of the guys I watched that with are no longer with us. Just a memory from 21 years ago seared in my mind. Since then, I have seen Neal in multiple shows and movies and I respect how he honors God and how he honors his wife and family. One of the few people in Hollywood that you can trust
Will there be a worthy generation for these men to pass the torch to? These are men who lived in an age of heroes, engaged in their lives with virtue and hard work, and are grateful and gracious with what they achieved.
Wow. Just wow. That is what comes to my mind after watching and listening to this interview. I knew and respected the "guy" that Mike was interviewing, only for his ability to perfectly portray the characters or roles that he was cast into on TV or in Movies but I actually didn’t know his name. After watching and listening to this storied Christian testimony I have even more respect for you Neal McDonough and also for Mike Rowe for having him on and giving him this platform from which to preach not only his testimony but the work that it took to get to where he is today. Thank you both!

It's good to see that the pendulum is starting to swing back out of the insanity and crap which has been driving Hollywood and society for so long. It's heartening to see good people like Neil finding their voice and speaking authentically and almost most importantly beginning to make content that has moral rectitude without being cheesy and lame.
Neal is one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood. He's played some of the most iconic bad guys in cinema AND television. He's fantastic.

My first exposure to Neal was in "Forever Strong". I watched with my four elementary and middle school boys. After the movie they said "we want to play THAT game!" (rugby).
We went the next week and found a local team. They all four played, and 3 of the 4 went on to captain their D2 college program. Those three are also now coaching middle school and high school programs of their own.
Quite a legacy from a little known movie!
Neal is probably my favorite Villian to watch. He can be so scary to watch and here he is, a guy anyone would want to have as a friend. This is a great interview.
I am laughing and crying during this interview. I used to work for an Orioles’ farm team full-time in my 20s. I knew Andy Etchebarren…one of the most terrifying looking men. I danced with Don Buford at a club in Sarasota and laughed at his antics in the press box during games. This has been food for my soul. Thank you so much for bringing back such great memories.

I first saw Neal in the Arrow verse followed by project blue book and I am all ways blown away by him, and Mike I've been watching you since dirty jobs first aired. This is hands down my favorite interview 🙌!
I'm ten minutes in and I'm already tearing up like a six-year old. Inspiring! Three MEN getting together and having a conversation about life. I'm not sports guy, but I instinctively get what they're saying and feeling. Neal is a scary-good actor and Mike is a super-scary-good host.

I'm from Cape Cod myself and what Neal said about sports or stupid stuff on the Cape is absolutely true, I've known a lot of both, lol.

Although I've expressed this sentiment before (you might not have seen my previous comments), Mike, your articulate and down-to-earth perspectives, coupled with your no-nonsense logical approach, make listening to you a genuine pleasure. This episode revealed a personal side of Neal that was truly surprising, and I appreciate the opportunity to learn more about him. Neal can do good and bad guys with equal skill, which is one of my favorite qualities in an actor.

I am in that tailspin now in my life, been falling out of the sky for awhile, couple of years, at 62 it came late in my life but as you heard we all go through them. I think now after watching this episode its time to pull back on the stick, ease the rudder and pull up this path I have been on and redirect it back up...Really enjoyed this podcast, 2 of my favorite people. What do you think Mike, too late to learn how to weld at 62? I dont think so.
It is not too late to learn a trade or something else. Find that thing you wish could have done or should have done and start that journey. There are lots of evening adult classes at vocational schools that are not that expensive to pursue. Welding, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, diesel mechanic. Whatever. I am doing lighting which i love but I wanted to do custom since I was 20. I just had my ass handed to me and was taken advantage of by more than one person who I thought were my friends, but they were just using me in the end to get me services for nearly free. I am just have to cowboy up and get back on the horse, working on that now@@MOE-db8oc

Neal McDonough is one of my all time favorite actors!!! He's just a class act. The way he loves and respects his wife when it comes to some roles he will not take, the way he talks about his family, his friends...Definitely a class act all the way around!❤

It is hard to express how fantastic this podcast episode is. I am going through a divorce from a woman who had the same place in my life as Neal talks about his wife. I have never been this lost and devistated and can't see much good ahead at the moment. Hearing Neal talk though! Wow. As a 78 y/o small town Indian boy from Alaska... watching & listening to you guys .... "filled my cup" for the entire time (if I may describe it that way).
Even as a "bad guy", Neal has always been a "memorable character" to me after seeing him on the big, or not so big screen... over the years.
I'm so glad I "happened upon" your site.
The discussion you guys had showed me (old guy) a level of insight, on the various human characteristics that abound, but sometimes seemingly people are unaware of, i.e.- seems (to me) like so many go through go through life unconsciously (unaware/uncaring).
My "time spent with you guys", was time well spent ... and that's an understatement!!

Neal, my total respect man! I knew of many of your roles over the years, but until this episode on TH-cam, I really didn't know about the actor behind the roles. I guess in a way, that is a compliment to your talent in portraying these characters. I can see now that I will be viewing a bunch of movies I've never seen just to really soak in the scope of your work.
