The funny thing is that when I read the book it seems like it was the opposite. Dwarves were very serious and stiff, while elves were happy and playful like children at least many of them. I seem to remember them welcoming the dwarves by singing and teasing them from the trees while the dwarves were annoyed at this playfulness.

It's a fact that the different Elven Realms have different policies and different cultures. Rivendell, Mirkwood and Lothlórien all have distinctively different styles and manners. Rivendell has always been the most worldly and open of the Elven Kingdoms and Elrond the most forgiving and patient Lord. Mirkwood however is quite different, quite conservative and unforgiving in it's ways - like Thranduil himself. And Lothlórien is a totally different matter all together. Otherworldly, neverending wisdom and gracefully mysterious. Elf does not equal Elf in Tolkien's universe.

The different Elven Realms are separated by their different subraces and origins as well which is bound to result in different ideologies. Imladris (Rivendell) with Elrond and his Half-Elven lineage that have to choose between the Gift of Man and immortality are bound to be liberal - also known for their healing prowess (hippocratic oath even here). The Greenwood Ideology is strongly influenced by the small amount of Sindar Elves (Oropher's line) that rule the majority of Silvan Elves (mostly warriors) which live in the most volatile Elven Realm by far. They have to be stoic and conservative to survive. And lastly, Lothlorien is the proverbial melting-pot of Elvendom - built by Nandor, enriched by Sindar and Noldor Elves and protected by the Silvan Galadhrim. When so many different Elven cultures live together in a symbiotic environment, enlightenment and moderation are bound to play a vital part in their ideology. In general it's hard to simplify the cultural aspects of Elvenkind since their origins, their mythology and their intricate familial relations render distinctions quite complicated. And political terms are always ... off, somehow when Elves are concerned.

The funny thing is that when I read the book it seems like it was the opposite. Dwarves were very serious and stiff, while elves were happy and playful like children at least many of them. I seem to remember them welcoming the dwarves by singing and teasing them from the trees while the dwarves were annoyed at this playfulness.

Can you imagine the dwarves pulling a stunt like this in Woodland Realm? I would love to see Thranduil's reaction to something like this! Somehow, I don't think he would be as understanding!
It's a fact that the different Elven Realms have different policies and different cultures. Rivendell, Mirkwood and Lothlórien all have distinctively different styles and manners. Rivendell has always been the most worldly and open of the Elven Kingdoms and Elrond the most forgiving and patient Lord. Mirkwood however is quite different, quite conservative and unforgiving in it's ways - like Thranduil himself. And Lothlórien is a totally different matter all together. Otherworldly, neverending wisdom and gracefully mysterious.
Elf does not equal Elf in Tolkien's universe.
***** I agree to an extent though I believe that's putting it a little too simply. The different Elven Realms are separated by their different subraces and origins as well which is bound to result in different ideologies. Imladris (Rivendell) with Elrond and his Half-Elven lineage that have to choose between the Gift of Man and immortality are bound to be liberal - also known for their healing prowess (hippocratic oath even here). The Greenwood Ideology is strongly influenced by the small amount of Sindar Elves (Oropher's line) that rule the majority of Silvan Elves (mostly warriors) which live in the most volatile Elven Realm by far. They have to be stoic and conservative to survive. And lastly, Lothlorien is the proverbial melting-pot of Elvendom - built by Nandor, enriched by Sindar and Noldor Elves and protected by the Silvan Galadhrim. When so many different Elven cultures live together in a symbiotic environment, enlightenment and moderation are bound to play a vital part in their ideology.
In general it's hard to simplify the cultural aspects of Elvenkind since their origins, their mythology and their intricate familial relations render distinctions quite complicated. And political terms are always ... off, somehow when Elves are concerned.
