    A really neat board mount and trunking work! One hint from a few UK sparkies - instead of the crappy grommet strip supplied with a lot of CU's, try using rubber edge stripping from Amazon, usually described as "Rubber Edge Trim U Shape Rubber Edge Protective Trim"

    when i was in the army sigs corp we used to use 25mm by 20mm trunking and instead of using an end cap we would cut the cover the 20mm longer and cut a v out of the ridges that lock the cover on and bend it to a 90 degree over the end and a little dab of pvc solvent weld ,making sure you don't put any weld near the cables of course , handy if you cant get end caps as the army wouldn't fork out the extra few bob for them. if your ever stuck just an idea.

    Grommet strip. . . you can put the join in the inside middle of each hole, then run a decent amount of tape round, through both holes, holding the strip, and the ends of them in place.
    Carry on 😁

    Love the tip about using the capping for angles. Large trunking seems so expensive for what it is. Jordan from Artisan Electrics had a tip of using car door protector as grommet. Much thicker and harder to pull off.

    I never realized you are dyslexic, I am too! I have a terrible short term and working memory and hate working under pressure. Concentration span is not too great either and tracing cables I find realy hard work at times. Working out an unknown circuit can take me longer than other sparks thats for sure! Time managment is a bit of a problem to me aswell. However.......I do find it has some advantages. Im quite good at aplying building regs and knowing when you can sensibly depart from wiring regs. I subcontract for a swimming pool specialist spark a lot who has an electrical engineering degree. His wiring, fault finding and electrical theory is absolubtly outstanding but hes not too good at knowing what regs can be sensibly departed from in certain situations. Some of his work looks like a dogs dinner but is always fully compliant, jmust untidy. Im quite anal about how stuff looks as well as functions.....oval capping is not a thing! Oval conduit is but capping is a flat cap which goes over a cable. Loads of people seem to get that wrong. Not that it matters!! Fuck it, ive actualy subscribed to you and I never subscribe to anyone. There are some channels on here where people are so full of themselvs and slate other peoples slightly untidy work a lot which you dont. The world aint perfect and not every install will be!!

  • @nickjohnson2570
    @nickjohnson2570 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Totaly agree with you! I know plumbers who can wire s and Y plans off by heart with no diagram but couldnt wire a lighting circuit if their life depended on it!! You just get used to what you do. Some sparks such as myself are fairly crap at reading complex digrams. You just know how a circuit functions and work it out in your head. I used consumer unit world a few years back and they rarely had Wylex stuff in stock. Other stuff was always there and found them pretty good value. Some grommet strips are terrible, i put tape over the strip usualy to hold it in place. If you cut the holes in the wood slightly smaller than the metal cutout you can toss the grommet in the bin as there are no sharp edges remaining which could chafe cable sheathing. Lewden have the best solution ive found for grommets, ,makes CU completely fireproof aswell. If you want to go fully by the book those big holes in the back with CU mounted on a combustable wooden board would be considered a potential fire hazzard id say......Saying that, it could be a non-combustable MDF like they have in service head cabinates, looks the same size and shape. Gread vid as always!

      The board this is fitted on is non combustible type mate 👍

    • @rayc1503
      @rayc1503 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use tile backer or hardie backer board. Nice and simple to score and cut to size. If you place the batterns just behind the CU fixing points. You can either screw into them or through them into the board. Penny washers placed into steel conduit threaded joints also work well to make the CU sit proud from the wall. Be sure to use fire rated foam to ensure the fire rating isn't compromised.
      Coming from a plumbing and heating background wiring in S/Y and plan plus systems I don't find so daunting. When I was an apprentice opening up wiring centres confused the f'k outta me. A jungle of tanhled wires. Orange and grey are the trace wires and the others are grouped into CPC, line, switched line and permanent line.
      Excellent upload buddy, keep them comin' 🙏🏼👍

  • @joeypriestman6783
    @joeypriestman6783 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Use solvent Weald (waste pipe glue) on the grommet strip before putting it around the knockouts and it sets solid so you can pull cables through without the strip being caught and having to try put it back around with a nest of cables in your way. Rubber car door edge is better than grommet strip in my opinion if you’d ever wanna try something new🤷🏻 bites down and holds without any need of glue or tape.

    • @rayc1503
      @rayc1503 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The way manufactures pre fab boards gives an Idea of how a CU should be assembled. I leave in gaps blanks between to help dissipate and residual heat if I can. Highest load descending next to the main switch. This gives the client to easily have amendments made to the CU without having to move and test existing circuits.

    I must admit I am always puzzled why, people have Chrome accessories and spots, why do people want to draw attention to these items, white accessories are less obtrusive.
    With the heating wiring, it's not so much the wiring of it, as most are y plan or s plan on your standard houses and the wiring diagrams are easy to follow, the key is knowing how the system works for fault finding and wiring systems where there's no diagrams, like on larger houses where you will have multiple under floor heating boxes, radiator zones, secondary return hot water, swimming pools etc.

    • @davecowan9466
      @davecowan9466 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Heating wiring is a headache for lots of electricians…..I jumped in and had a go when I was an apprentice as most of the qualified sparks didn’t want to know and was the best way to learn!
      Understanding the principles of how the heating system needs to work you’re wiring definitely helps as you say.
      I enjoy the challenge of bigger systems now, but I’ll be honest it has taken years to build up first hand experience of lots of scenarios/systems.
      Learn how a 2/3 port valve works/is wired along with thermostat wiring and you’re ok for most systems 👍🏼

    • @acelectricalsecurity
      @acelectricalsecurity 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@davecowan9466 yeah your right, I have been doing new build since the late 80's where they were always 3 port valves, now they seem to be all s plan, plus I used to contract to British gas, so I don't mind doing them, and the latest job I am doing has a few UF boxes, several valves, two boilers, pool, spa, separate coach house and a load of pumps, but the principles are still the same, only difference is I need a few relays to stop back feeds.
      One tip, do all your lives, neutrals and earth's first, that way if you get it wrong it won't go bang, just won't work as it should
