I have seen Joan Baez in concert twice - way down here in Australia, 40 years apart! Her voice still gets into my soul. Diamonds and Rust is poetry, is life, is love, is loss, is sweetness, is sorrow. I adore her.
Her versions of Dylan's songs are gems also. The frisson of their relationship is no less mutual respect and awe, their collaborations sublime. Baez and Dylan's music underpinned a generation's social awakening. Unique. Timeless. Often gorgeous.

Joan Baez and Bob Dylan were an item back in the early 'sixties, both personally and as a frequent singing duo. She was a star in the folk music scene, and helped him get his start. They broke up, and he married Sara Lowndes. He wrote "Visions of Johanna" about the feelings he still had for Baez. Baez wrote this song about a late night phone call Dylan made to her when he was going through his divorce. He wanted to get her opinion on a song he'd written, "Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts". Dylan also wrote a song about this phone conversation called "You're a Big Girl Now". In his song it seems he wanted to get back together with her and she turned him down.
Later, when they were waiting backstage to perform together for the first time in years, Dylan made mention to her of "that sing you wrote about me", meaning "Diamonds and Rust". Baez looked straight at him and said, "What makes you think it's about you?" He scoffed, "Oh, come on, Joanie."

I've had the pleasure of hearing Joan Baez live, and I can tell you that her voice will raise the hair on the back of you neck. For those who don't know, Joan Baez was already very well known as a folk singer when Bob Dylan came on the scene. Joan invited him to join her on stage, and helped get his career started. They were more or less of a couple for a number of years, often sharing the stage when one or the other played. That is, until one show where Joan showed up, and Bob did not invite her onto the stage. That was his way of telling her it was over. If you know Joan at all, you know that she could stand alone on a stage, with ony her acoustic guitar, and keep thousands entranced with her voice. She was also very active in opposing the military draft, and the USA invasion of Viet Nam.

Judy Collins' voice was just as spectacular...check out "Amazing Grace," which became one of her signature songs...probably my favorite song by Joni Mitchell would be "Both Sides Now." Marched with Martin Luther King and was a part of all of the civil rights movements all through 1960s and beyond. Check out her song Birmingham Sunday from her 5th album. She still performs. Her latest work was about our previous President titled Nasty Man. Her folk music from 1959 through the end of the 1960s is beautiful. She branched out into other styles in the 1970s. I love your reactions, so natural and heartfelt, keep it up. We were privileged to go and see Joan live in York, England a couple of years ago. Her voice is wonderful, this song for me was the highlight of the show.

Your reactions are very perceptive, thank you! I first saw Joan Baez in concert in 1970 in L.A., I think I got my first album of hers in '69. Her voice is astonishing, as is her soul. She participated in the 1965 Selma to Montgomery march for voting rights, and she sang We Shall Overcome at the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. She started in the folk movement way back in the 50's, and as of last year she was still performing. Hope you try more of her music, and the wikipedia article is pretty good if you want more info ; ).

One of the most emotial love song I ever heard. I saw Joan on stage 3 times in France and Swizerland in the 80's and this song was the climax of the concert and led me to tears each time. Joan was such a Voice and a Consciousness and she still is !

One of my favourite songs, a bittersweet lovsong about her relationship with Bob Dylan.. Live this is wonderful and she often duets with incredible artists for it.
Joan Baez consummate folk catalogue too.. Protest singer Very brave gutsy woman with a lot of soul and incredible musical talent.
Jesse is another good song, so is Hush Little Baby, Forever Young, Blowin In The Wind, The Wind of The Old Days and Suzanne.. Her versions are beautiful.. X

Oh God, now you've hit on one of my all-time favorite singer-songwriters. Thank you for the reaction. There's a song/poem that she did that always gave me chills, "Song in the Blood." It's from her 1968 album, Baptism. For many people, it's different than anything they've ever heard. What do you think?

Omg, love that one Fred! It used to creep me out a little as a kid. So different, like you said. Joan is everything to me. (I’m the guilty party that has been pestering James for months 😄)

@@karaminalee Thanks for making the request. You've got great taste in music. Yes, "Song in the Blood" is a bit dark from the very first line, but the poetry is delivered beautifully until the final almost deafening crescendo. Pure art.

This masterpiece has been one of my favorites since it came out. It took me a long time to figure out what she meant by “ the girl on the half shell “..... it’s a reference to Venus (Roman goddess of love, sex, beauty & fertility. ) She is usually depicted standing or lying on a giant seashell.

Thank you for playing this, I had forgotten how unique and powerful her voice is! Another favourite of mine from
Joan Baez is “Jesse come home”. I think you’d enjoy it too. I love watching you react to the songs I grew up with - they sure take me back in time - and your immediate connection to these great artists show how timeless good music is. Love your channel, it’s one of my favourites xx

I was born in 1961 and it's fair to say Joan Baez songs took deep root in my psyche. I idolised her voice and tried to imitate her style when I was a young teen with little success. Have a listen to her performance of "What have they done to the rain?" by Malvina Reynolds. Warning: it WILL break your heart so don't pick a day when you're feeling blue.

I attended a Joan Baez concert at the Royal Albert Hall decades ago, and that crystalline voice filled that glorious space. Do listen to 'Plaisir D'Amour', 'Baby Blue'.

I love this song. I grew up listening to the Judas Priest cover, it hit's differently. It's a beautiful song, my dad loves Bob Dylan. He cried the last time I saw him while he showed me a video of Bob Dylan singing Mr. Tambourine Man live at Newport Folk Festival in 1964. I love music.

She generally did covers of really ancient ballads , but wrote this for Bob . She also was filmed at Woodstock 1969 , singing the Union organizing song , JOE HILL . Led Zepplin did a rock version of her song , BABE IM GONNA LEAVE YOU .
