  • A quick walkaround of the 1080 with a look at it's not so good points and its bad points.
    This should have been posted several hours ago but problems with editing software (how hard is it to produce decent editing software?)
    Apologies for the wind noise and bad editing, but I was getting a little irked with the whole process by the end of it.

    My brother has owned his 1080 diesel loader tractor with a Dual loader with heavy duty 4 tine grapple fork and 8 foot loader bucket since 2015. It has been a great tractor and it is only $800 for an aftermarket 3 pt. hitch for it.

      I think the US built ones were more reliable than the French bult ones, which had a very poor reputation. Luckily mine is a US built one.

    Only ever worked on a 1080 once when I was a fairly green apprentice. Tractor had been apart to repair the gearbox and the fitter and I were re-assembling it. We had just refitted the top cover on the gearbox and then had a lunchbreak. As the 'boy', I was given the job of refitting all the cab floor tinwork. Never seen so many bits of tin and nuts and bolts!!. The fitter took it for a spin round the yard and found the Multipower didn't work properly. Turns out the internal MP pipe was only finger tight. I learnt how to take the floor out in quick time that day.

    Very early US built MF 1080s had the same round rear trumpets as earlier British MF 165/175 tractors (also some earlier MF 178s). Outer Ring Gear larger by about an inch over the smaller tractors in the range, however and outer hub was heavier duty. Also had dry brakes initially. Crown wheel and pinion different ratio to smaller MF 100 series. Not sure when square trumpets came in for US built MF 1080 but these too initially had dry brakes, switching to later wet brakes at some point, which were far superior. Although the square trumpets look same as Banner Lane trumpets, they are in fact about an inch longer, with thicker walls, and a double hole lug on underside of trumpet casting to maintain correct linkage geometry when fitted with 38" rear tyres, which at least in Europe was the standard fitment choice. US market had more different tyre choices. Would say all evidence definitely points to an original US built machine.
    Quite how it ended up in France, if indeed that was the case, is anybodys guess. Perhaps sent over (less cab) so French MF Engineers could tailor the machine more specifically for the European Market, which the front light position and type of fitting would strongly suggest in this instance.
    The front of the US style fenders would have had a vertical plate attached to the front underside, with provision for two holes and lamps, one dip, one full beam. This would have accommodated lighting regs in US but not Europe, hence why these plates have been removed. As on the homologation process for the MF 1100 brought to Britain 2 years earlier, these plates were simply blanked off and lights mounted further forward and lower down on sides of Front Grille. The mounting plates add to the mechanical strength and rigidity of the US style fender.
    You are indeed correct about the engine with regard to cylinder head issues. Also independant PTO clutch packs could be problematic. If one could transplant an A4-3182 engine from the original MF 698 tractor, the head issues were pretty much sorted by then. MF 698 phased out and replaced by MF 698T for reasons of standardisation of parts and reduction in number of different specific parts. This change saw the deletion of not only the A4-3182 engine but also the Front Bolster which was specific to MF 1080/1085/595 tractors only, with no commonality with anything else. Principal engine dimensions identical between the two engine marks (ie 1 & 2)
    Centre Housing whilst looking identical to Banner Lane items, is in fact different internally, due to the PTO drive arrangement. Principal dimensions externally however do match Banner Lane dimensions for equivilent part, externally.
    MF 1080/1100/1130 front cap for bonnet was common to all 3 three tractors - MF 1150 had similar style bonnet cap but wider to accommodate the wider bonnet dimensions necessary to cover the wider V8 engine used in that tractor. There were some metal versions of the bonnet caps but most were made of a plastic polymer similar to that used for plastic car bumpers. Front Axle Mid Beam identical across all 4 tractors, only the outer 'arms' on the MF 1080 were smaller section, lighter duty items compared to equivilent MF 1100/1130/1150 items.

    Ouch! I dislocated and broke my right shoulder when I was 16. Now at near 63 I am thinking I am going to have to break down and go see my orthopedic surgeon. It has more to do with diminishing mobility and pain. I hate to think what a day of pass shooting waterfowl would be like, something I did back when I should have been getting physical therapy after the injury.
    I wish I had held onto the Massey 85 I got from a friend's mother. It was one his Dad's tractors and had sat for a number of years. It went to the scrapper when I realized I did not have a place to work on it and my local tractor shop wasn't interested in taking it on for me.

    • @ClarenceFudWeasel
      @ClarenceFudWeasel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If only we had paid more attention years ago, This shoulder is the result of many years driving a Matbro Teleram. The hydraulic levers had to be operated at arms length and by the end of the silage season I had a permanent burning pain in my right shoulder that took months to go away. It's the loss of mobility and pain that gets me too. I also have permanent tinitis from many years shooting and operating machinery without ear protection. Ah, the follies of youth!
      Something like the loss of your 85 is what started me off collecting too. We only have the one go at life, might as well squeeze what we can from it.

It would be interesting to see the build plate on the panel below the steering wheel. Mine is French built (2900hrs 1968) but all the writing on the controls is in French and it has headlamps on the grill. I will be watching with interest. Keep up the great work. i worked for an agricultural contractor in the late 1960s/1970s, we had many massey fergusons including 2 x 1080's, a second hand one in 1972 and a new one in 1975. The second hand one had all sorts of faults, including head gasket failures. The new one had the multi power fail on the first day out, the head gasket failed after about 2 years and damaged the head and the block. The older 1080 was very noisy, the newer one was slightly less noisy. These were "my" tractors, I used them on direct drilling ( about 3000 acres a year in those days), ploughing with 5 x 14.s Ransomes conventional
    plough, forage harvesting and a lot of muck cart. They were undoubtedly the worst of all the M.F.s we had and I was happy when I moved onto a John Deere 4240 in 1978.

    • @ClarenceFudWeasel
      @ClarenceFudWeasel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They weren't a great tractor, I would agree. And the wet sleeve engine was not Perkins finest by a long stretch. I decided to keep it as a curiosity because there are so few surviving in England. Interestingly, while they still had their problems, the US built ones were not nearly as bad as the French ones like you had and I might have. (Really not sure at the moment), looking at mine I am starting to wonder if mine is US built but badged French.
      Your 1975 one must have been offloaded by the dealer at a good price because it was after the launch of the 595 and they must have wanted to shift the old models.. Mind you, the 595 wasn't a lot better!

At the the time I was disappointed as I thought the cab would be quieter on the 595.So, yes, I think he got a what looked like a good deal on the 1080 , but with what happened to the engine 2 years later it wasn,t so good. I wonder what is the story behind the tractor, it looks very much American built, with US style weight bracket, cast centers and gauges. And fenders of course. Maybe they shipped them from Detroit to France before they went to production in Beauvais? This is not first I've seen like this, there is one similar with 4wd conversion for sale in Ebay right now.

    • @ClarenceFudWeasel
      @ClarenceFudWeasel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was wondering the same thing, were they imported to fulfil orders before the French production line was ready? Mine is a round axle so quite an early one, so is the ebay one. I had noticed the over priced example there but not taken in the fenders and wheels etc. but you are right, clearly a US made one. But the axle is not standard. It looks like a side drive Four Wheel Traction conversion. The French ones had a centre drive Cat 3 front axle like my 590 has. I'm trying to find out more. Thanks for your input.

      I didn't say it was - on the later MF 1005 series tractors, the techniques used to produce the bonnets were different to those used for the production of the prior MF 1000 series, whose appearance were akin to MF 100 series on steriods, if you will. The MF 1000 series bonnet work consisted of a main left and right side panel, plus a long centre panel and short battery access panel. The dash surround consisted again of a left and right handed side panel and a short mid panel. The bonnet cap was also a seperate piece and either made from a single metal pressing, or more commonly from ABS Plastic which was also used to make more attractive car bumpers for example. As with cars, the ABS bonnet caps on tractors could withstand low impacts. US bonnets differed from UK MF 100 series tractors, where the bonnets were made of fewer seperate parts - only the lower side panels and lower nose cone were seperate, the rest of the bonnet was a one piece pressing, in two different lengths, to suit either the '5' line or '8' line models (MF 135 & MF 148s excepted - they used the same bonnet, exclusive to those two models).
      As with the MF 500 series bonnets produced in both UK & France, the bonnet style of the later MF 1005 series was much simplified, in part to keep cost down, to partially offset the higher cost of the new style, monocoque constructed cabs, for both the European MF 500 series and US MF 1005 series tractors.
      The styling for both of these latter ranges was hinted at with the introduction of the articulated MF 1500 & 1800 tractors, circa 1969, featuring the soon to be more widely used hard nose surround, painted silver.
