    The first 1080 I ever remember seeing was on the edge of Wicken Fen, down Factory road, Burwell in 1971. My father farmed Priory Farm then, but Mitchum’s, tractor and machinery dealers, farmed the last few fields closest to the reed fields at Wicken Fen and it was their tractor. My father had 3 MF 175’s, a 165 and 2 135’s, plus a couple of Fordson Majors, a yellow Fordson Major County Crawler and a Track Marshall Crawler with a Turner linkage.
    Mitchum’s MF1080 looked absolutely massive compared to our 175’s. Not sure if it was French or American, but it did look very American to me, having a flat deck floor (but no Cab) and the gear shift on the dashboard to the right of the steering wheel, by the throttle lever, which IIRC, you pushed forward to increase the revs. Mitchum’s driver seemed to like the tractor a lot.
    We moved to North Suffolk shortly afterward. Some 7 years later we bought a French built MF 595 (Mk1), which was a modern version of the 1080, but which was a bloody disaster of a tractor!
    IIRC, You had to split the tractor to change a hydraulic filter. It had the European type PAVT back wheels (which your 1080 doesn’t) and European type cast front wheels (which your 1080 also doesn’t). The front wheels were too narrow ant it would get stuck as soon as it hit any boggy ground. Which by the Autumn of 1976, it all suddenly became.

      That’s interesting. You want to get a copy of ‘the farm in the fens’ by Alan Bloom. He lived at Priory Farm in the early war years. Fascinating account of how he cleared the wildernesses & drained it by hand & sweat & tears for the war effort. The government was panicking because we’d been relying on imports for too long ( ring any bells?) anyway I heard they’ve flooded it again for the wildlife !?!? Don’t know if it’s true....

      Thanks Darren. I’ve got the book and read it several times. My book was given by my Grandmother to my Grandfather for Christmas in 1944. They lived at Haddenham. It amazes me that they knew the war was ending by the end of 1944. So much so that a Cambridge professor met Alan Bloom on the Cock-up bridge over Burwell Lode to tell him that when the war ended, he’d got to let it all go wild again. It took until the millennium for that to happen.
      We invited Alan and his son back to Priory farm in 1971. He was absolutely chuffed to bits to see how his good work had continued.
      Ironically in 1972, we then moved to North Suffolk, not far form his Bressingham Gardens.
      A fantastic book and a brilliant read.

      @darrenphillips6456 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Rickwardful .... agreed. I’ve read it at least 3 times. Interesting how Priory Farm was all set to be a bombing range until they discovered a special type of Buckthorn grew there which they used in munitions. I wonder what this ingredient was? Never have been able to find out. Yes a one off (Alan Bloom). His accounts of his time in Canada & how he amassed the steam collection really fascinating. His memorial at Bressingham church is inscribed “He made things grow”. How appropriate!!

    The combine repair would be of interest to some of us @ least, just have no knowledge of the Massey line, perhaps some day you will have a go w/ an International, many, many of which were built in the UK, unlike french tractors.

      At some point, I'll get an International, I thought the Hydro models were fantastic things, years ahead of their time. I'd also like an Allis Chalmers, a 6000 series and definitely a Detroit engined Oliver 990.

    So just curious was it an American tractor brought to France at some stage and the decals changed?

    • @ClarenceFudWeasel
      @ClarenceFudWeasel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That I have not yet determined. The rest of the tag says made in Detroit United States for Massey Ferguson, France. I have never seen another 1080 like it in Europe. They were launched in the US before Europe, maybe it was an early one sold before manufacturing was ready in Europe? Perhaps I have something a little special.

    Bit of a surprise to see you back on the spanners but good none the less. So the 1080 was a US import for France? Was that very common? Hope that you didn't over do it on the shoulder front and that some cool lubricant made it feel better.

    • @ClarenceFudWeasel
      @ClarenceFudWeasel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I have never seen another, but it doesn't mean that they don't exist. It's quite an early one so I wondered if it was imported because the factory couldn't meet demand possibly. I'll have to dig some more.

    You don't often see a tractor wearing a chastity belt!
    I think I'd be tempted right from the start to just gas axe that frame into small manageable chunks and unbolt what's left afterwards. Granted, there may be some useful metal in that frame, so careful choice of axing, but hey-ho, it's more about getting Eloise out of her chastity belt.

    • @ClarenceFudWeasel

    We all get older but our brains don’t seem to age as quickly as our bodies, my brain tells me I can do something in ten minutes but 20 minutes later the old bones have to have a rest. I find myself admitting defeat more often now that the mid 60’s have shown up on the old clock.

      In my mind, I'm still 18 and can lift the engine and transmission out of a Mini unaided. Sadly doing such stupid things in youth is what has left me with dicky joints, permanent tinnitus, I'm going deaf and when I stand up out of a chair it takes me ten minutes to straighten up. And I haven't even had my mid-life crisis yet. It's 15 years late.
