This is why Morpheus redpilled a programmer, not a philosopher. Does what he's told, doesn't argue about epistemology.
@Nicod3m0 Otimsis The total lack of critical thinking skills that a STEM-only tertiary education gives you combined with the inflated sense of self-importance of a philosopher? Morpheus would shoot him after 5 minutes, he'd be so annoying.
Edit for the STEMlords who keep wanting to fight me over this: What I mean with this comment is that your education is overly technocratic and doesn't equip you to reflect on WHY you're told to engineer the latest technological marvel. Which effect will this have on the world? Who profits from what I do? How does what I do interact with human nature (and what IS human nature?)? Those are questions that the humanities/social sciences ask, but you're taught to scoff at them and discount what they do as pointless bullshit. You're being blue-pilled every day. Corporations and governments appeal to your ego by telling you you're the elite, then overwork you while you build the latest weapon system or other tool to further enslave humanity and destroy the planet. Oh but you get slightly more money than people from other fields (still next to nothing compared to your boss), that means they respect you, sure lol.
Neo in The Matrix has the great advantage to live in a time when programmers were seen as sad nerds and glorified secretaries and the internet was very counterculture-y, thus it's easier for him to break free. Nowadays I assume, say, 80% of IT people would tell Morpheus to get a job. (Assuming 20% aren't like this might be generous, but I assume that many who do have critical thinking skills probably keep them to themselves in an environment that's dominated by careerists and technocrats. So as I've said before, there are always exceptions to the rule when it comes to observations about humans. Some of the most interesting and well-rounded people have a foot in both worlds and are capable of asking both HOW and WHY, but our current educational system sure doesn't make it easy to become this way - in fact most of the people like this are very autodidactic and have taught themselves a lot that the educational system wouldn't teach them.)
The self-importance of philosophers, well that's a topic for another rant but I don't see philosophers @-ing me, so I assume they either know I'm right or just think "Yes haha, all philosophers but me are indeed up their own asses!"

The reality of the Matrix? Or the Real Reality where all the humans are locked in those chambers.
If you "take away the symbolic fiction" so, waking up from the matrix, waking up inside the real reality inside that chamber, all you do is changing a reality. Going from the Matrix reality into the real world reality, conquered by machines, trapped humans in those chambers. So whats his point
@@Anudorini-Talah Your lack of punctuation is killing me. It's also making me doubt if you ever saw The Matrix.
@@Anudorini-Talah The Matrix is heavily based on the works of philosopher Jean Baudrillard and his concept of the Hyperreal. Hyperreality in simple terms is a structure that is in betweeen the observer and reality. The problem is that this structure mandates the observer how to observe and so the idea of removing the hyperreal structure to expose the underlying reality is paradoxical. If you remove the structure either it continues to instruct the observer what they should observe so for all intents and purposes the structure has not been removed. If you remove the structure and somehow stop it from instructing the observer what to observe then the observer has no frame of reference to understand what they now observe which defeats the purpose of exposing reality.
This is a metaphor for real life. There are unending structures like these that tell us how to observe: TV, Adverts, Films, Laws, Taxes, Dinner Tables... These are ideas that we cannot willfully remove from our conciousness and filter how we understand the world. If we tried to remove these structures they would still exist in our minds.
The Matrix is a simplified metaphor for this idea. Once Neo escapes the Matrix and sees the truth he is welcomed by a different type of prison and a different type of lie.
now i'm imagining the architect having to confront žižek instead of neo

Not sure if I buy it either but it's a compelling argument and one that we can expect will be very important to discuss as we go torwards a future of VR tech dominating our lives
A programmer’s entire profession is writing “if and else” and “true and false” statements, so Neo right off the bat is enticed to select at least one pill without question. However, a philosopher like Žižek doesn’t have a rigid sense of true and false, and he realizes that one’s own truth and reality is ultimately bestowed by the beholder.
The existence of false dichotomies does not imply true and false are fluid, it only proves that falsehood and deception exist.

probably the same thing he has said over and over, the big other is what's closest to stirner's spook thing, and it doesn't exist as you'd expect of a spook, but in order to understand that it doesn't exist, you need to first understand that it does exist, acknowledge that there is such a thing as a matrix first, before dismissing it as a spook created by us, an artificial thing born of experience. but then also the big other is a necessity, since it provides meaning and structure, puts us on the same page, so to speak. so like it's like there was no life beyond the matrix, we can dismiss it as a spook, but also we can't do without it. the therd pill

He’s right, the symbols are our only point of reference for reality, we can’t bypass our senses except through technology but that too is filtered through our senses
@Freaky Fred you’re totally missing the point. If you lose all of your senses, you would have no point of reference for reality. I’m not saying that reality doesn’t exist if you don’t have senses. What I’m saying is we only know reality through our senses. We have no way of accessing base reality free from the bias of our senses.
@Freaky Fred your senses can be tricked all the time. We’ve even evolved to have false positives. You can’t say that our senses give us a complete picture
@Freaky Fred maybe, maybe not. Depends on your level of awareness. But my point is that we really don’t have access to base reality except through our senses which are proven to be fallible. If you’re just saying we exist in reality well I don’t disagree. My point is just that our sense limit our ability to get complete information about it

I assume your question is ironic tbh.
But, when I reflected on this video again, I would say it doesn't fully make sense, unless we assume that the fiction, illusion Zizek talks about is mostly internet and other forms of digital media, which became essential part of reality and other areas of life became dependent on the digital technologies so there's no escape from it now. It could probably still make sense when we substitute sth else as an 'illusion' here, provided that it's something created by humans (part of a culture, sth kinda abstract maybe) that "regulates and structures reality".
When everyone lives in an illusion, the illusion becomes a new reality...
Sorry in case your question isn't ironic. Cheers.
There are layers to it.
The internet is reality, meatspace is merely a shadow of that reality on Plato's cave wall. Our world consists of our relations to others, created by communication, which is mostly virtual. Neo meets people in the Matrix, and those people are real, and so are his relationships to those people.
But there is also an underlying reality. The people we talk to on the internet are real people who exist in meatspace. We all need food. You can order a pizza over the internet, but you can't download it. Neo eats noodles in the Matrix, but nutrition gel in meatspace.
But even outside of the Matrix, Neo's world consists of the relationships he has with other people, and everything he knows is a filtered representation of an underlying reality.
Reality is that which doesn't go away when you stop believing in it. Some argue that everything in life is an illusion, the concept of Samsara in Buddhism or Stovokor in the Klingon religion. But some things in life are immediate and real, even if your conceptualisation of them is not. (Confusing the map for the territory.)
The idea that by exiting the Matrix it stops being real is a lie. Neo can change aspects of the Matrix, seeing right through it, but that doesn't make the lives of the people living in it any less real. Nor the lives of the people outside of it any more real. The Matrix is just as much a part of reality as Morpheus' ship. A reality that is not transcended by the red pill Morpheus offers.

He says that sociocultural elements and constructs, which i think he likes to call ideologies, of the landscape we are living in might be layered over fundamental material existence, even obscuring it, but that this layer is just as real and integral to the human experience as the matter. Just removing it and pretending that it is all nothing but an illusion removes a part of reality itself. What he likes the 3rd pill to do is making us able to see where ideologies start and end.

@@rogers7567 In this Matrix scene, the red pill allows Neo to leave the Matrix and join actual real life, whereas the blue pill keeps him in the simulated and fake world of the Matrix.
What Zizek is saying is that our reality isn't necessarily any more real than the Matrix.
Because reality as we understand it, is simply the sum total of whatever ideologies, belief systems and 'facts' that we've been taught by other people. And most of these beliefs that constitute our understanding of the real world, although reaffirmed and shared by other humans, do not actually reflect reality as it actually is, but are instead just human fabrications or illusions. So in that sense, real life is similar to the Matrix, because we live in illusions and not the truth. (We can't even be sure what the real truth is).
Bit hard to wrap your head around.
At the end of that Morpheus consumed both pills.
So essentially: Plato is not saying to spurn the shadowy figures, but to accept both the shadows and the higher reality as relative to one another: the Ego as the poor soul who walks this bridge up and down
No, Plato says that the truth is rejected by those who are used to the illusion.
The interpretation that all our perceptions are shadows was added later, and is exactly the kind of illusion that makes people reject the truth.
The Ego is from Freud, and is only useful in modeling motivation: What do you do because you want to, because you need to, or because others want you to? It isn't actually a thing and isn't used anymore in contemporary psychology.
The soul is not really a thing either, the body-mind dualism that is dogmatic to any religion that has an afterlife so you can balance your books posthumously is a fundamental category mistake. It's like expecting there to be a forest somewhere between the trees.
What Zizek is saying here is not about Plato, it's about structuralism. By taking the red pill, Neo is trading one reality (in which he is a hacker) for another reality (in which he is a submariner), but if one reality is a prison, then the other is no less so.
