  • In another departure from my usual landscape photography vlogs, this one sees me at St Cwyfans Church in the Sea, Porth Cwyfan, Anglesey.
    I'm helping my daughter out with some photography tips for her first dedicated DSLR location shoot. We cover the basics of composition, exposure and focus settings and she takes some amazing images for a first timer! She has been using her Nikon D5600 DSLR since 2017 for interior design photography for her 5000+ Instagram followers.
    We're very fortunate to have some amazing landscape photography locations on our doorstep, and so for a family visit we also got lucky with the weather, light and tide!
    My budget equipment ...
    Camera: Nikon D5500
    Lenses: Nikkor 18 - 140mm, Tokina 11 - 16mm ATX Pro, Sigma 70 - 300mm.
    Filmed on Hawkeye Firefly 8S 90deg, with external lavalier mic and DJI Spark drone.
    Please do comment to tell me what you think, and subscribe to join me next time!

    She made it look easy! Great images throughout. I even liked the one with just the mountains

      When she saw your comment about the mountains she was delighted.!! She has a "thing" about mountains and we did a Snowdonia walk the next day. But I haven't seen anything from her camera on that one yet ... I was on a "walk only" day so nothing from me.

      Cheers! My daughter still seems more interested in her bloody interior design shots though! I suppose with so many followers on IG if she checked in some landscapes she'd have a load of un-subs!

      Hi Jake, so sorry for the slow reply!! For some unknown reason YT decided your comment was spam and I only just spotted it. Anyway, really glad you found the video useful. Hope some of my others might be too! And if you're good enough to comment again in future I'll be more careful about checking the Spam tab, just in case 😀👍

    Stumbled across your blogs the other day when you were on llanddwyn Island a place we visit every year around end of march ( have to use holidays up before April), and today I realised by reading your vlog description that your North Wales based which I hold close to my heart and you use budget gear something us mere mortals can relate to. I'm looking forward to catching up with your blogs bud. Very interesting outlook on landscape photography. 👍

    Nikons have an excellent dynamic range. Sometimes it's better to choose one of the bracketed shots bring up the shadows and take down the highlights. Otherwise blending can look very HDR and false. I know and have had to revert myself. I've even used filters hand held

    • @DGriffGallery
      @DGriffGallery  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes that's a really good point - I've done that myself from time to time. Once you get the images on a computer you can decide what creates best results! I guess the important thing is to ensure you take home as many options as possible 👍😃

    Hi David I'm really enjoying your vlog's I've already taken lots of info away with me to put into practice loving the videos so much & such a easy person to listen to each time I watch. I need some advice for taking landscape photography with my Nikon D5600 well more so with what wide angle lens to use with my camera it has to be realistically affordable obviously. If you could give any help or advice I would appreciate it very much keep up the fantastic vlog's Thanks.

    • @DGriffGallery
      @DGriffGallery  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Gem, more than happy to try to help you out with a little advice, but it would be really helpful to know what lens or lenses you have at the moment? So that I can gauge the most appropriate recommendation to make ... One thing you can be sure of, with that camera body you will certainly be able to obtain some excellent images😊👍🏻

      @@DGriffGallery Hi David Thank for the reply when I started my photography I had a Nikon D60 with a 18-55mm then I bought a Nikon 55-200mm lens then I started to do some wildlife photography with yet another lens a Sigma 150-500mm but now I'm after a good wide angle lens for landscapes to go with my new camera the D5600. The difference in picture compared to the D60 is fantastic really enjoying the camera and learning a lot from your vlogs which did I mention I love.

      Hi, thanks, really helpful to know where you are with your photography. OK, you mentioned budget in your first message and I am totally on board with that. All my lenses, bar one, were bought second-hand. That's the thing about good glass - if treated well it doesn't wear out! So based on what you already have, the full focal length range for most landscapes are covered from18mm right out to 200mm. So, I do have a couple of recommendations which might help get your creativity flowing ... the first will take you much wider than 18mm but without fish-eye distortion (I hate that!). It's a lens which I use and love, and there are many examples of it in action in my vlogs: that's the Tokina 11-16mm ATX Pro DX. This lens is eye-wateringly sharp, and outrageously cheap for the quality. I picked mine up from mbp.com - very reliable firm, if they say it's in good condition it always is! unlike eBay!! Now I have version 1 without an auto-focus motor, so it won't work with the D5xxx series as they don't have a built in motor. I always use it on a tripod with manual focus anyway so that's no issue. I think the version 2 has a focussing motor, but I can't be sure. In any case this isn't a walking about lens, it's for those creative moments, epic vistas and the like, but also those compositions with an imposing foreground leading through to a great backdrop and pin-sharp throughout. You can track one of these down for about £300 - worth every penny and a landscape photographer's dream wide-angle. Another choice and one of the few I have bought new because it's so cheap and light is the Nikon 35mm f/1.8 G prime. Again super sharp (I mean really really sharp!!) and great value at only about £150 brand new. I love mine. Now you might be thinking "a fixed focal length which I already have covered, and with a full frame equivalent of 50mm". Hear me out :) Let's start with the focal length. On your crop sensor this is about the closest standard eye-sight equivalent in terms of field of view, so your images are a reflection of what you see. So as a photographic tool which prevents you from zooming it kind of forces you to see and interpret your landscapes in a way that emulates "reality" and any zooming or compositional adjustments have to be done with your feet! So, as a result of a more constrained capture process your thought processes evolve and develop. Then when you go back to a zoom lens you've learned not to just zoom in and out a bit to what looks good, but to really think about and work with what's in the frame. It's been said by many that 6 months with just one prime lens is a great way to improve your photography. I took that on board. And the 35mm 1.8G was my choice - loved it and learned a huge amount. And all landscapes! One last thing about this lens, it's a lovely lightweight little thing and perfect for low light internal shots, portraits, general purpose - so great value! And there you have it, those are my recommendations for hours of fun - one ultra-wide and one not so wide, but well worth giving it a try. Both have been featured in my vlogs. Hope this helps ... :)

      @@DGriffGallery David, again Thank you very much for you help I had looked at mob.com but I didn't know what the company was like for reliability on used goods so that's great to hear I'll be straight on this and having a good look at both lenses. keep up the great video vlogs and Thanks again 😁
