Anglesey Lakeside Photography In Winter

- In this landscape photography video the weather conditions don't really lend themselves to a photography trip into the mountains, and as I have been on the coast a good deal lately I thought I would take you once again to the lowland lake close to my house. It's been a couple of years since we visited there with a camera on this channel and I thought I would show you how I approach photographing the margins in winter.

Handy that, having a lake on your doorstep. A very relaxing way to spend a few hours... until you get caught up in a tree 😁

A nice unhurried stroll around the water, I very much liked the rock with natural framing and the lead in view through the bullrushes. Thanks for putting it all together for us 👍

Lovely shots David. Just goes to show in the rock, reeds and lake shot, that even at f/2, micro 4/3 still gives hardly any out of focus areas.
Yes, you're quite right, I would have preferred smoother soft focus areas, I did attempt to use a longer focal length but as I stepped back from the lake shore I couldn't obtain the same composition as the bank was sloping upwards and the camera angle was too high. 😊👍

Thanks Dave. Suffering reduced mobility at the moment, but that has put me in mind of a couple of places locally that I should be able to take the camera for some gentle exercise.

Yeah , 80 acres of prime lowland trout fishing. It's not mine in terms of ultimate "ownership", but to all intents and purposes I'm the in-perpetuity guardian and fishery manager 😊👍

Thank you David, beautiful images. Before this video, I really would not think about taking an image of rock! Thanks for the inspiration. If I may, I have a question. I am building my kit of Olympus lenses. Is it worth getting a 17mm lens? Do you use that lens often? Many thanks, Peter.
Hi Peter, thanks so much for your kind feedback.
I guess the best way to answer your question would be to ask what other lenses you have in your bag at the moment?
In terms of build, usability and image quality, it is peerless around this focal length in the M4/3 pantheon. With the obvious exception of the M.Zuiko 17mm f/1.2 Pro. which, of course, comes in at three times the price and is about the size and weight of the average beer barrel! Although intense pixel-peeping will show the f/1.8 lens to have a very marginally inferior image quality, in every other respect, and specifically in terms of my own landscape photography requirements, the f/1.8 option is a very easy decision to make.
Possibly a slightly Olympus bias here, I'll admit, but nonetheless I've never felt remotely let down by it. And I have tried comparable lenses around this focal length from Pana-Lumix.
But in all honestly dropping this in between the M.Zuiko 12mm f/2.0 and the 25mm f/1.8 sometimes means that if I'm travelling ultra-light then the 17mm is abandoned and lonely on the shelf. In these circumstances, a composition which is a little too wide for the 25mm but at 12mm is a little lost in the frame is often overcome by shooting at 12mm and cropping in as required. Not a great solution, but it can be mitigated for landscapes by shooting in high-res on the top-end Olympus bodies, so not too many pixels are eventually discarded.
All that said, under normal circumstances the 17mm would always be with me. It's still pretty light and compact and I ever only travel ultra-light when hiking very long-distances, with camping gear or scaling the Eryri peaks.
Another great use of the 17mm is street and general travel photography. I find in those circumstances that 12mm is too wide and 25mm often just a little too tight. At a 34mm full-frame equivalent, the 17mm slots in nicely. I've used it many times for this sort of thing.
So all in all it's a strong "Yes" from me, but of course, if you have that range of focal lengths covered by another fast lens such as the 12-40 f/2.8 Pro, then it might not be an essential purchase for you. If you have the 12-45 f/4.0 and want something faster and opening up to shallower DoF for creative purposes, then it would be a good accompaniment.
One last thing, I've used if for astro-photography too and much prefer this focal length for dark-sky work than ultra-wide lenses such as some used between, for example, the 7.5mm f/2.0 Laowa and the MZ 12mm by other photographers. But that's just a personal creative preference.

David, great channel you have here. As someone who is shoots MFT and is looking to move to paid photo editing software, I am wondering what you would suggest. I am leaning towards DXO Photolab combined with the Nik Collection and Affinity Photo. I know you use DXO Photolab and the Nik Collection along with Lightroom, Photoshop and a few other products to edit your photos. I am interested to know that if you were to start again would you still go down the Lightroom and Photoshop path? If you could only choose between DXO Photolab and Lightroom (or ACR) as your main raw processor which would you choose? More generally which software would you prioritise if you were to limit yourself to three or four products? This would make an interesting video.
Hi Dane, it's quite easy to answer this one for you. I reverted back to just using Lightroom and ACR from Photolab quite some time ago. I found I just couldn't adapt to the PL tools format and as I was always going to retain my subscription to Adobe it made sense to go back to the familiarity of 10+ years of experience. As far as the actual abilities of LR, recent updates have improved it substantially especially for masking. Add to that Topaz Denoise and Nik Color Efex and Viveza used on Photoshop smart object layers, and that would be the suite of tools I would install if I were starting all over again. I've tried just about everything out there and always seem to drift back to this combination. Hope this is helpful, and many thanks for your kind words about my TH-cam channel 😊👍
@@DGriffGallery Thanks David for your generous response. It definitely helps. It also explains why I haven't seen you use PL in recent times. I perfectly understand your decision to stick with what you know best. I reckon I would do the same. Given I don't have your familiarity with LR and Photoshop, it makes my decision just a bit harder. However, will keep in mind your thoughts on the matter. The ease of LR's masking makes me lean a bit to the Adobe combination, though I have read PL's local adjustments give you much greater control. I might just have to try both and see how I get on.
