  • I've been sleeping on the floor for two years now. In this video, I discuss some of the benefits I have found as well as talk more about traditional Japanese futons (or shikibutons) and how they compare with a conventional mattress. The benefits go far beyond minimalism!

    Hubby and I have had our beds on the floor for over ten years now. He has a futon; so do I. We snuggle in at night, and are totally cozy and comfortable. We are both 70+. Which is great, since we don't care a gnat's pecker... if people think we're crazy. We are healthy, happy, and well rested... every night!

    I've been sleeping on the floor now for 1 year . I suffered from horrific sciatica and was paralyzed for over 3 months which made me go from the bed to the floor . I just throw 2 blankets on the floor and another blanket to keep over me that's it . I wake up without pain now and it had corrected my posture and spine. But yeah I need to get something a little better maybe like a yoga mat. I hate sleeping on anything soft now . It has to be rock hard and flat as possible.

    I love sleeping on the floor. When I moved into my first apartment after college, I couldn't afford a bed, so I slept on the floor for a couple of years. Then, I bought a $1,000 bed (and a pillow-top mattress) and slept in it one night. I gave it away a week later. That was 6 years ago and no more beds. 😁

      I couldn't afford a bed for awhile in my new apartment. My floor is concrete with hard tiles on top. I got a basic platform bed and memory foam mattress, I love it.... ha. Might be the type of floor you sleep on. If it's wood (like I think it should be, or in Japanese homes it is) it's probably more comfortable.

    Sleeping on the floor has so many benefits, including for; infants, movement patterns & even the climate. Babies have a deeper connection with their parents when they co-sleep & the bed at 4:02 wouldn't have a falling hazard. Also babies seem to develop more competent movement skills when they are on the ground with their parents sitting on the ground with them. In the Blue Zone Okinawa, the furniture is traditionally very low, and their population of centenarians has the highest mobility of all the worlds' centenarians. Floor sleeping also reduces the desire for huge houses, as rooms become more multi-functional. This reduces urban sprawl & commuter pollution.

    The pressure on your tissues, muscles, and blood vessels makes absolutely no sense. If you lay on a futon or mattress you still are laying on tissues, muscles, and blood vessels since they cover the skeletal system.

    Futons are very common in Turkish culture, too. We call it döşek(doshek) . They are made of sheep's wool and have cotton cover. Commonly used by villagers and some other people. Many others have them in their homes in case there's not enough bed for the guests. They are known for being healthy and good for the back pain. And the hygiene is not all about airing them often. You can also wash the wool once a year and reuse it. It has versions for sofa and quilt as well.

    I've been sleeping on a Japanese futon for about a month now. After the first night or two (which was a slightly uncomfortable adjustment) I haven't had any of the severe back pain that I've been suffering from for YEARS. I do have fairly severe allergies, which makes sleeping so low to the ground a bit difficult to adjust to, but overall I cannot praise this sleeping style enough. I have mild-to-moderate scoliosis which was not diagnosed until I was in my twenties and has caused me much discomfort over the years, but I now notice a real decrease in my pain (including from my occasional sciatica). At present, I am sleeping on a 4" shikibuton on 2" tatami, and it is very comfortable, if a bit firm for my friends. I do have plans to make a 3" shikibuton to keep around for guests, or to add to my bed when I'm feeling extra luxurious😊 It's a bit odd to move from a standard "western" style bed, but I can't see myself ever going back!

      I would need to see some peer review research supporting this (doctor of chiropractic != a medical doctor by the way). There are large swaths of the world that still sleep in hammocks for example, and you don't see the problems alleged from not having "bottom resistance" provided it's properly hung.

      Hi, I don't think you actually need a tatami, you can perfectly sleep on a futon only. The reason why I have tatamis is because of the moist underneath the futon. I always had wooden floors and I didn't want to risk stains since I am always renting my apartments. The benefits I experienced are much deeper sleep, no backache anymore and I don't have to worry about any chemicals, in my mattress. With a futon you can usually say exactly what materials you want to have in there.

    In recent weeks starting at the end of February, I got rid of my entire bed & mattress set up because I was having so many back issues, trouble falling asleep and finding a good position, waking up in middle of the night, you name it!
    I just gathered all the thickest blankets and comforters around my place, layered them on top of each other and with a heating pad, I sleep SOO good now, I don't even wake up in the middle of the night anymore! As a side sleeper I do use a few pillows for my knees, ankles, and lumbar area, but other than that, I only turn about twice/ three times before going back to deep sleep.
    Best choice I made in my personal life in a long while :)

    I sleep on the floor regularly... I use a 3" latex foam topper and a sleeping bag, right on the floor. My big motivator for this is the "use it or lose it" concept... I love camping, which requires sleeping on the ground, right? I also have back problems- degenerative disk disease, and other wonderful spinal maladies. I found that when I slept on a regular bed, my back pain was worse, and I couldn't sleep on the ground (ie, camping). Now I do Dr. Stuart McGill's "big three" exercises for spinal stability, and I sleep on the floor. I love it! My back feels better than it did 10 years ago, and I'm 50. I will probably never sleep on a traditional bed again.

    My husband and I own a tri folding mattress that we keep in the living room and acts like a small couch when it's not being used. We like to sleep on it when it gets too hot in our room and really enjoy how it keeps us cooler during summer nights. Heat rises so when it's hot, it is much cooler to be lower on the ground. We sometimes even take naps on it during the day. Our bedroom does have our normal bed, with a firm mattress which feels great on my back since I too have minor scoliosis. When it gets cooler in the year, we'll definitely stay sleeping on the bed. But for now, we sometimes sleep on the floor (^_^) Also, we've both experienced sleeping on the floor when we were really young!

    I was told the weight gain of the mattress isn't due to bacteria (they weigh next to nothing), but due to skin cells and (dead) mites.

    • @RowleyFan2
      @RowleyFan2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      That's a myth spread by the mattress industry to make you buy a mattress every handful of years. No way can dust mites and your skin cells gather so much and add so much weight.

    In today’s society and regular human life, people are spending their majority of time sitting or lying in very unnatural positions, these positions have become natural from a very young age. This happen when you where indoctrinated to sit 8hours in primary school on a wooden chair. Many hours and days/months later most if not all people develop a shagging forward tilted head, weak abdominals that even provoke this posture more, and weak back muscles (erector spinea) adding into this complex problem that has become natural, people sleep on super soft beds that let you hips sink deep, while you head is supported in your unnatural position... so, yea, the floor is a good idea as gravity will slowly recorrect the spine and posture into its natural position. A few years ago, people did not eat 7times a day, sit for 10hours, and so on. Modern society has developed human beings to rely on support. Namaste have a good day.
    A reason to practice yoga is to recorrect posture with the help of Adana, but don’t be fooled by farse commercialized yoga, yoga is there to help you achieve higher conciousness and happiness throughout self realization.

    Hi, Tara
    I lived in South Korea while teaching there, and the traditional YO is not nearly as comfortable as a Futon, although I am sure that Koreans would disagree with that. However, I did become used to them, and when I moved back home, I had trouble sleeping in a bed and would sleep on my living room floor. The problem with Western style sleeping is, as you said, a matter of hygiene, but a little worse than you described. The increased weight of the mattress over time is due to the poop of millions of dustmites, and the pint or so of perspiration during the night. Not airing out your mattress as soon as you get up adds to the problem. You really need to vacuum a Western type mattress at least once a month to get rid of the dustmite poop!

    • @TaraWhiteTalks
      @TaraWhiteTalks  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Tara
      Well, over time I got used to sleeping in my bed again, although I do miss having the heat from the Ondol below me (ha, ha). The rest of my family thought that I was just plain weird (true enough) for sleeping on the living room floor, and some not so nice remarks were being made. Rather than go through the gauntlet every morning, I decided that I would sleep in my bed. It took me a long time to get used to that again. I prefer the Futon over the Yo, but prefer the Ondol over the practically non-existent heating in Japanese homes.

    Some apartments dont allow mattresses on the floor cause they can create mold underneath, will landlords still be ok with this instead and could this still create mold? Can you put it on a carpet instead of wood floor

    • @TaraWhiteTalks
      @TaraWhiteTalks  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, great questions! I am not sure what a landlord would think about this outside of Japan. I can tell you that if you do not fold the futon every day and put it away that mold almost certainly will grow underneath. That is true even on wood floors. However, if you air out the futon weekly in the sun and don't leave it out all day it should be fine. I haven't tried using a futon on the carpet, although my recommendations would all be the same. Never leave it out because we sweat while we sleep and it should get daily air ventilation and be able to dry fully. There is more information about how to care for futons in the futon guide here: goo.gl/iOhUf4

    This is a little off topic. People have asked you in the comments where can they get a futon. I find it strange that obviously they have internet but can't look up the info themselves. Asking for recommendations, ok, asking basic questions that they could have searched on their own, not ok. I see this A LOT, and then, do they actually sit and wait for a reply or video response? If so, the whole time they just dont bother to TRY and research? As a research fiend, i guess i was just triggered by that statement...lol. Great video by the way.

      Ive been sleeping on a air mattress for months(6+), and my back is fine(in fact sleeping on one stopped my back/shoulder pain). Maybe it was the firmness or lack of in mattress that caused the backpain. My only troubles with the mattress is getting up! And stopping the cats from popping it.

    What about stuff that might be unseen crawling on the floor?
    I prefer a chaise I like to keep my head raised.

    I’m thinking of doing this but futons r expensive, could I just use the mattress on the floor instead

    I have some surgeries on my hips and my spine. Is it possible for me to sleep on a futon? I have a little bit fear that i have problems to stand up from a futon.

    I don't know about other materials but latex mattresses are incredibly confortable and they are toxic to bacteria and other microorganisms so they are completely sanitized always... I don't think that venting the futon outside the window (where there can be also bugs) is more higienic, anyway I might agree on the rest :D

    Tara, minute 4’03, what size are the futons there? And do they slide apart when you share a bed with that setup?

    Thinking about using something like this for camping, I like the website you've linked to with the tatami mats. How do you think a mat like this would fair for a casual camper/ is its lightweight and compact enough to bring with for camping trips? : ) thanks!

      I don't think I would use the words lightweight or compact, but I suppose it's all relative. Also depends on what size you were thinking to order. I can carry my single futon myself, but I wouldn't want to for more than 5 minutes and I need both hands. I certainly would never take it hiking. Hope that helps.

    I sleep on a tall bed because I can't get up from the floor due to arthritis. My mattress is memory foam and it is the only thing that helps my joint pain.

      Sorry to hear about the arthritis. I'm glad that you found something that helps your joint pain!

    You are tiny. I am a husky big boned woman. I have slept on floor on and off my whole life but permanently a couple months ago. I have severe herniated disk issue caused by falling and other injuries. Sleeping in beds seemed comfortable but one day I was actually paralyzed and couldn't get out of bed. I had to roll off and fell to floor. Pretty scary and painful. I remembered sleeping in floor in past and it's effect on back, very straightening! It took time to adjust as I'm not light. I have big bones (no exaggerating) and I was afraid my husky body would never adjust but it did. A couple months and I'm starting to feel back strengthen. Now I won't lie, its not easy at first. But when back pain is so bad its like a saw or hellraiser horror you feel relief to straighten out your back. Positions you sleep in important. If you need pillows to get used to it use them. I started using tons of pillows. Now they sit mostly against wall as I only need one now. I have a exercise mat (equivalent to gymnastics mat),a thin mat on top of that, a thin foam cover, sheet, blanket. A sheet and comforter then on top of that to cover me. Me and my doggie are both happy in this set up. : ) I recommend floor sleeping to all. You also avoid bed bugs. If you've ever seen pin size blood spots on bed, you have bed bugs. Can happen even if you bought new mattress. Fyi,Most beds are recycled beds. This is untold story they don't want you to know. Manufacturing of beds is evil and bad for planet, especially types like purple brand beds that can give you cancer by breathing the mattress. Don't do it. Asians and other cultures did it and do it because it was the original way, the smarter way.
