Once in Japan, I realized that there is a great passion for high quallity. Even your minimalist style looks like a luxurious spa experience. In fact, some people pay quite some money to spend a couple of weeks experiencing an ascetic lifestyle in the mountains with cold water and a bit of zen and maybe a tea ceremony.

This is true. I lived at a monastery as a lay student for a while and we had many visitors looking for a rest from their busy lives. I think it was part of the mission of the monks to share that with lay people.
@Kazuko Hara yea placing profit as the ultimate good in our society is the biggest issue we face as Americans, planned obsolescence in particular is one of the most criminal practices
I'm an American minimalist. I have a roll-up bed, two fold-up chairs, two fold-up tables, clothes for every day of the week, four or five books, toiletries, a couple of pots/pans/cups/utensils, and a box of personal records/meaningful items. I don't think I own anything that costs over $200, save for a gold necklace which I've had 40+ years. When I move, I can fit everything in my car and be done in one trip.

@Scorpio The only time I did was a few weeks before the 2020 lockdown at which time I bought about a six-month supply of dried beans and rice. I also think it's important to keep a good supply of water on hand - especially for anyone living in a big city, e.g., Los Angeles, etc.
With so many people screaming about cultural appropriation it is so refreshing to see so many Japanese people encouraging foreigners to wear kimono and adopt Japanese traditions rather than being upset about it as some other cultures are. Thank you for sharing!
I agree - I have a collection of many kimonos that I love! When I wear a kimono - some people accuse me of cultural appropriation. However, when I go to The Cherry Blossom Festival here in Washington DC - I wear a kimono to the festival. The Japanese people there always say thank you to me, for wearing a kimono. I am not Japanese, but I love Japanese tea, Japanese Food and wearing a Kimono!

The fact that he encourages people to wear kimono does not change the observation that some people use traditions from some countries, in a way that reinforces stereotypes, doesn't respect their original meaning or give credit to their source.

I wish my children could study for a while in Japan ... thinking of others,respect,cleanliness, food mindfulness etc are life skills so needed and unfortunately not thought in many countries:(
I was sitting here thinking how wonderful the kimono is and I was thinking what it would be like to buy one and wear it at home, I decided that this would probably be an expensive mistake and felt a little sad. Then I looked down and realised I was wearing a long thick dressing gown, made of wonderful material, it was expensive 10 years ago, tied at the waist, also with a hood. I wear it in the mornings here in the UK in the winter and after a bath or shower. I already had my own version of kimono but didnt realise. Sometimes great ideas cross cultures and countries and appear in their own versions as they are a perfect design. I admire your strenght to be minimalist and think I will try the essential oils on a block of wood instead of joss sticks. Be careful of leaving the candle lit at night in a wooden room though......with love and respect from London UK

If you live in the West, just wear what you want. Individualism and diversity makes it perfectly accessible. No need to explain or rationalize it to anyone. If someone asks why you wear it, just ask them if they're jealous. Perhaps they'll start wearing it too.

i'm half japanese and live in america. i know very little about japanese culture and language and i also struggle with a lot of clutter in all aspects of my life. just today did i come across your videos and i already feel so much more at peace with my identity as a person of japanese ancestry as well as just feeling peace from witnessing your lifestyle! thank you!
I've been reading about washing hair with only water, but after watching your videos, I finally decided to try it. My hair stayed oily for the first couple days, but after a week it looked completely normal! Thank you for sharing your lifestyle.
As a tinyhouse resident I am SO excited to discover tenugui. Reclaiming my towel drawer!!
Yeah! Tenugui or MOKU towel would be great! Tenugui tend to fray easily, but it's normal, so that you can tear up, and use it as a small cloth or string.

I do have some cotton “flour sack” towels, is tenugui fabric very different from that, or is it a similar idea?
Yes, I love the floursack towels to dry my long hair. Five below has loose weave cotton throws to use as larger towels that will dry faster than thick bath towels.

While I don’t want to be a minimalist, I do need to declutter my whole life, and you have given me many good ideas. The Petty Knife will be a wonderful gift for one of my daughters, who loves to cook.
I have started to declutter my life. Giving away a lot of things to a resell shop that helps people who are going to rehab. My most prized possessions are going to younger family members. Going to get rid of everything I can live without. Or do my best. I’m older and am just tired of so much clutter! It’s time I made my life as easy on myself that I possibly can.
Amazing how someone advocating for a minimalist lifestyle managed to sell you a knife, even though you probably already have five.
Thank you for this video! I have always admired Japanese culture for their minimalism, but often wondered if they just rolled their eyes at us for trying to be like them. I live in the USA, where we suffer under the weight of too much food and too many belongings (and too much debt because of it!). We look to Japan to teach us what they have always known and we have long forgotten: how to be content with just enough.

I have always wanted to simplify getting dressed in the morning. The kemono is a great idea for me. I live in northwest Oregon. I would get some looks from town, but I have gotten used to that.
I would not recommend that unless you don't want a social life.

The most striking thing about your video is not the objects, but your lifestyle. It is so intentional and simple.
From my experience I feel really proud and happy when people from other countries are interested in Czech traditions, food, culture etc
I am an Arab but I absolutely love Japanese culture, food and clothing! I've been wanting to have a kimono for a long time now because I think it's very comfortable and stylish! But I know that people and family around me will call me a weeb and (Culturally alienated) but I don’t really care I want to wear and do what I love and believe is better for me :,)

Many years ago, I was lucky enough to do a home-stay with a Japanese family. One of the gifts they gave me was a small iron kettle like yours. Every time I look at it (I don't drink tea, so I have never used it) I remember my trip to Japan.

3:12 i surf on the east coast and am always in cold water. its impossible to imagine water that cold if you've never been in it. the fact that you are able to take showers that cold every morning is incredible
Essential oils really are underrated! People tend to forget smells when it comes to home living
It's an irritant to skin and many people are allergic to scents. Please be careful and let guests know your home contains essential oils. Oils are also toxic to pets.

I also really enjoyed the inspiring video! Definitely a tricky question what to pick! I think less stricktly I would pick a Bed (4 items), cellphone, laptop, knife, water bottle, pen, college block, bike, food container, barefoot shoes, backpack, cutting board.

I love your response to the question about foreigners wearing kimono. In personal experience, I have always been encouraged to experience other people's culture... Unless I'm speaking to someone from America. They say it is "cultural appropriation".
Yet, those stuрid americans have black people dressed mostly in western clothes, use western medicine, western vehicles, western language and western foods. There's nothing american blacks do at all that connects them to their African heritage. They're not even interested in finding out which exact culture they belong, ethnically speaking. Never ever align yourself to American "standards", since they've got none.
After watching this, I want to buy so many of these items!
Minimalist uses best of his own items, gives away the rest. Please don't buy more stuff, it's horrible for our planet 💙

My husband hasn’t used shampoo on his hair for over a year and his hair looks and smells amazing. He decided to give it a try after I told him of a man in his seventies In England who had now used Shampoo on his hair for 36 years and his hair was so healthy, voluminous, pitch black(no dye).
Simple living is one of the best thing I learned at school from my teacher; more space for our soul and gratitude ,thank you for sharing this video ; I really love kimono even though I am not from Japan and I think we can learn a lot from Japanese culture about minimalism ( I love less the cold shower as I will be in pain with my muscles -that already suffer -after that )

Kimono is so comfy to wear, I had a kimono shirt sort of thing, it's lighter than a robe, quite stylish with just a plain shirt underneath.

Thank you for your video! I am also slowly going and shifting to more and more minimalist lifestyle and adding objects i use and slowly removing objects i dont use. I am not that extremly minimalisic yet but sharing my life with someone i love. My routines also include a lot of studying and reading and excersize. Love your way of life!

We are all minimalists at heart. We are consumer addicts through ego and greed. Yes, I'm slowly using up what I've got to be even more minimal than I am. Sadly, I'm permanently disabled and can't afford to discard everything I'm not currently using. At least I'm eating healthy and my body is at stable weight, so I know I'll use up what I have within a decade or so. It's tough living on laughable peanuts I get from the government, barely covers my meds (I'm not even in the US, I'm 🇨🇦).
You are a master of atmosphere.
The laundry routine needs it's own video. You could help many of us and the environment by sharing the amount of water and citric acid powder to revitalize the Mg balls. And if we want to use it as softener, how much water and citric acid powder and drops of essential oils to put. Please share the links to where to buy these items too.

It's a very recent movement. But you used the word "always" 🤔 Are you born in this century or something?
Stumbled unto this at zero dark thirty this morning. I am amazed. Living in the Mojave Desert, I don’t require the warmer items, but they could be useful. My camera is a Sony RX 100-7, my bike is a center drive Befang Fat Tire (it’s a desert out there), my computer is a Raspberry Pi 400 (battery compatible with the e-bike and smartphone) and I drink Gun Powder Green Tea almost exclusively. The Petty knife is likely coming, but I generally use a Chinese style chef’s knife for its thin but wider blade. I like the carry bag, but mostly use a Camel Back pack with 1.5 liter water bladder (43 deg C days are typical here). The Mojave is noted for highly alkaline and mineralized water already. I don’t think I need the magnesium, but I’m looking at the citrus aspect. I’ll have to look at the essential oil thing, that is a new one for me. But this is a highly compatible list of suggestions. I think two words that apply to everything minimalists own are important (to them) and necessary (for their life). I personally know people here in the US that own multiple houses so full of stuff that there are just narrow paths to walk through to get around in. Going into a house like that always makes me look forward to getting back to my mostly empty house with lots of empty floor space.
They also have garages full of junk (but expensive car is exposed to the damage outside). Plus all those storage spaces full of useless garbage at large monthly fees 🤦🏻♀️ I mean...why? Whyyyyyy? 😂
@@mikesamovarov4054 I find that a lot of times the reason keep all that stuff in storage is that "Someday I might need that stuff." or "I'm going to use that someday when X, Y, or Z happens". And most of the time it just sets in storage for years.

Hi Aki, I just found your channel and I'm binging through your content. I'm in the preparation to go nomad for some months starting in April, starting here in Germany with the ultimate goal of reaching Japan by rail and ferry alone (borders permitting). My friend sent me a moku towel from Tokyo. The patterns were so cute I used it to line my glass cabinet and out things on top of it :)
