I actually grew up hearing the story of Stephen and Gregory. My dad and uncle were both stationed at Sickles in Fluda when this happened. My uncle talked about how he had actually met one of them in passing a few days before the incident happened. The scariest part to me was when he set the head down infront of her he said something along the lines of “here you go now you and Greg can sleep together all you want. But I don’t think you will be sleeping much any more” It’s crazy that I’m 27 now and I’m watching a Mr. Ballen video about a story I heard as young as 5 or 6.

One crime was stupidity, arrogance, and negligence that led to an unintentional mass-casualty incident.
The other was unhinged, possessive, primitive rage that led to an intentional murder and the intentional traumatization of another person, because this dude couldn't just cut his losses and walk away from both people with dignity.
One of these cannot be allowed to walk the streets again, not even in broad daylight, because he clearly can't be relied upon to consistently act like a human being instead of a chimp in heat. The other simply shouldn't be allowed to drive or pilot any form of mass transportation ever again.

It's tragic, but _also_ I can't believe they all walked into the death cellar one by one. If one person goes into a room and doesn't come out, I can see going in there to check on them, sure. But if that second person _also_ doesn't come out, you should assume going in there is a bad idea. Three people in a row? At that point you're failing basic pattern recognition. Get the kid out of the house, call emergency services and tell them you're pretty sure you have a gas leak, or a slasher villain camping your basement or something.

So keeping them in the pantry would probably significantly reduce the risk of something like this happening. Unlike a basement where light might be able to shine on the potatoes through windows. Its still a good habit to throw away food that's gone bad to prevent stuff like this.

Crazy to me how many people are making light of Stephen's actions. Diane found out she was pregnant while she was trying to leave her husband. She had been trying to end the marriage for some time already, but Stephen was having difficulty accepting her decision. Infidelity is a horrible act, but once she decided to leave him...she could do as she wish. Greogory was in the wrong for sleeping with his wife's friend, but didn't deserve to die for being in a consenting relationship. Stephen never owned them and they didn't owe him their lives.

One day I noticed a stench coming out from that area, I thought it was the nearby garbage bag, but once I took it out it still smelled. A woman always has the right to end a relationship for any reason or no reason at all, but just as a man doesn't have the right to assault a woman, she shouldn't have the right to destroy him emotionally. That doesn't justify murder, but it does make it less surprising that it happened. Of course, the manner in which it happened was bat-shit crazy and made her leaving him look like a wise idea. I never understood why she’d open all the windows in the house, open the cellar hatch, and we would go outside to do; what seemed to me at the time; useless little putting around for 15 minutes. Then she would go down with a burlap sack and get a bunch, after telling me to stay there and tell her a story. I didn’t realize at the time that the potatoes were the reason for all these precautions. It just baffles me as to why so many justice systems are incredibly warped because if it was their own family members that this happened to, it would’ve been a different story, they would fight harder. And then you get people that are locked up for petty things that spend decades of their life in prison, meanwhile, murderers et cetera get the bare minimum.

    • @schwaaard
      @schwaaard 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

I always remind myself that these are “legal” systems, not “justice” systems. Satisfying the letter of the law is the priority, not delivering justice. I hate that it’s the case, but it helps temper my expectations when it comes to crime and punishment. Sometimes justice is achieved, or at least a ruling is fair, but I think most of the time the scales are left grossly imbalanced.

Man, one thing I REALLY miss about when MrBallen first started is that almost every video eventually ended up becoming 3 stories, but in recent times it's usually 1 story per video. So, naturally, when we get the occasional 3 story video, that legit makes my day, I love this channel. This is the only TH-cam channel I watch regularly for every new upload.
(I do love the 1 story vids too, it gives MrBallen more time to give more detail and information. Plus, I know that if every video was 3 stories, it would be easier to run out of material for new vids. But still, this just made my night!)

    • @stevejones148

3 stories cheapens them individually IMO. At the same time not all of them need to be 25 mins each. It’s a balance and I don’t think one is necessarily Better than the other.
Also in the beginning alot of Ballens content were famous strange/dark/mysterious stories already in story format. His best work that he seems most excited to do are stories HE basically is introducing to a wide audience that is lesser known.
At the same time stories I’ve heard a million times like the bell witch were amazingly done so again I think it’s just a preference thing.

Also, it wasn't a card that informed him of the relationship but her journal. The potato story made me think of Nitrogen poisoning, but it looks like it was definitely something else. Potatoes can sometimes produce a gas called solanine which is what must have killed them. In the case of nitrogen poisoning, nitrogen is already about 80% of our atmosphere and it is non-toxic but can be extremely dangerous in certain circumstances, for example, in a space where it had displaced the oxygen. The human body is primed to feel an overabundance of carbon dioxide. When you hold your breath the feeling you get of the urge to breathe is a physiological reaction caused by a build up of carbon dioxide. The human body has NO reaction to an oxygen-free environment. In other words, if you walked into a room which was 100% nitrogen and 0% oxygen your body would not notice anything weird. No weird smell, no weird shortness of breath feeling. After three of four breaths you would feel slightly lightheaded (kinda like you stood up too fast) and then you would just pass out and be dead within another minute or two. This method of death is actually being looked at for use in executions as it cannot go wrong, and would be a way to execute someone without making them suffer. Workers who deal with what are called "confined spaces" are given specialized training to monitor work that goes on in and around them. So, yeah, not 100% related to the story, but made me think of something else to keep you up at night. Great as usual Mr Ballen!

My mother asked me to clean it out, and as soon as I put my head down there, I started gagging, and had to back away. Not rotten potato related, but I used to work at a crab shack a while back and the health inspector was supposed to be paying us a visit, and we used to keep the spoiled crabs (a few hundred pounds worth) in huge black contractor bags set into plastic bins in a walk in fridge outside the main building in an effort to slow the decomposition process. Well these things had started to rot and become "juicy", and when crabs rot they produce a lot of ammonia, well one of my jobs was to clean all of this mess as fast as I could, so I grabbed the bags and with help from my coworkers hurled them into the back of an old freezer truck we used primarily for that purpose, and then proceeded to hose everything down with a mix of bleach and water, and when I got to those bins is where I ran into problems. I had dumped all the brown liquid out into a grassy part behind the shop and started hosing out the bins with the bleach and water mixture, holding my breath as I did so, and when I got to the patch of grass with crab juice in it, this white smoke started to billow out of the ground there, and my eyes started to burn, which is when I decided I'd had enough.
But yeah, always be wary of what you're mixing or other potential unseen dangers you could be facing because it could save your life.

It tends to be the opposite; you forget moments that aren’t emotionally stimulating. Repression is not a common phenomenon. Just think, have you forgotten the worst moments of your life, or do you still remember them? I still remember mine. The lucky few are those who repress all trauma (although some would argue that repression does not solve anything and that the psychological and physiological aftereffects will be present regardless of conscious awareness).

You went from a completely structured career and environment, to the chaos and disorder of the civilian world, and you often leave behind a tight-knit community you had been a part of for years. It's hard for the service members and for their families, and it really is something that should be talked about more. Hi ☺️...Some time ago, I was reading comments on Mr. Ballen's videos and someone recommended a book called "The Custom of the Sea" (it's about cannabalism at sea). I wanted to thank that person because I read that book & it was freakin' awesome! I tried to thank them, but it's hard to sift through 14 thousand comments...If you recommended this book, I am so grateful. It was a RIDICULOUSLY good read. Thanks🤗

25:22 that last story is the harsh truth about jealousy and cheating. The first can turn an unstable person into a homicidal maniac, and the second is the betrayal of the heart. It all spells disaster and tragedy.

In todays society where everything is disposable including partners both (female and male) situations like these are becoming increasingly more common.

I heard the story of the the military guy from one of my moms friends. I didn’t believe it when I heard it, but this guy was best friends with Stephen, I had never heard that story anywhere else until now and I’m blown away.
