Teenage girl killed at Silver Spring Metro in train surfing incident

- Metropolitan Transit Police responded to the report of a deceased teenage girl on a train in Silver Spring around 10:30 a.m. According to police, this appears to be a train surfing incident.

A few years ago, I was a nursing student and got on with a group of about 7 high school kids at Silver Spring/Takoma Park metro. There were NO police or metro staff. It was around when high schoolers let out. These kids were rambunctious. Two began mock-fighting in the vestibule between the trains. I could see one kid try to push the other down as if to make them fall between the trains.
All the passengers kept quiet because they were afraid of these teens. I got up and told these kids to get the heck out of the vestibule and those kids cursed and threatened me. I said 'yeah, whatever, you are in the soup I'm going for the conducter..." I walked past them, ignoring the cursing and made my way to where the train operator sits and I told him. He was one guy on the metro but fortunately, he walked back with me. All he did was adjust his belt as if he were going to remove it and strap someone, and those kids rushed into their seats looking well-behaved. It was impressive. But not one passenger spoke up because they were genuinely afraid. I'm from NYC initially, so I'm not easily intimidated even if outnumbered but could you imagine if I did not go for the train engineer?
This seems to be a long-running problem and police posted at the time the kids let out could help -- one metro staff on the train is insufficient. Also, slap a ticket on the parents. I don't care if the kids have one parent and that person works. They are responsible. Better a ticket than needing to request a couple of days off from one's boss to attend your child's funeral.
Honestly this type of thing is just going to become more and more common as our societal standards decline. There have always been and will always been bad things, people, etc. But the level that's tolerated these days has become off the charts.
People are blaming tiktok. Although my heart goes out to the family she made a choice. Mabe she wasn't train surfing at all. People move from car to car all the time through the end doors. It's not Metro's fault either. They have signs up warning people not to do that. They are responsible for their own actions

Every metro car has a button that you can push and speaker to the train operator to stop the train or call the transit police. Every car has a number written inside it so you could also call the transit police yourself. The operator can keep the door closed until the police arrive.
No! The solution is not for Metro to install or modify anything. She made her idiotic decision
When I lived in Berlin in '19 and '20 several young people, mostly male, died while train surfing on an S-Bahn (3rd rail light rail) or U-Bahn (subway). Sorry to hear our kids are doing it too.

It's crazy you expected something different. Skipping school and smoking weed out of an apple with friends was enough of a thrill for my friends. She def wasn't doing something smart when she died, right? You can easily be electrocuted/amputated/decapitated if you fall off.
My friends sister died walking down train tracks at night while drunk and got hit in 2017. That was stupid too. Stupid is stupid. There is no respawn and try again. Maybe your social circle will learn from this and it will be a lesson you remember for life.

Not surprised this happened. Was on the Metro a few weeks ago and some idiot kids were trying to go from one train car to another when they were told by an older gentleman to not be idiots, and then some girl started yelling at him for saying anything to them. Disgusting behavior

Guys, it's really not worth the risk. Stay inside the train.
Let me guess, it's the Police, and Transportation departments fault for not putting up signs saying:
"Don't ride on the outside of the train. Take a seat inside."
I tried to report this type of b.s. juvenile behavior (groups of kids walking cavalierly between trains on the west leg of the Red Line) at a Station Master booth and the employees were so busy yakking with each other and ignoring me trying to get their attention so I gave up and left…
This reckless crap is not really surprising, especially with the current generations

Another sad thing is, human beings are preprogrammed to do things like seek thrills and break rules as teenagers, so adolescence is something we all have to *survive*. Hopefully you get to be someone like the first guy they interviewed where he was like 'I did some stupid things as a teenager but I didn't do that.'
I know I, personally, did some things in my teens- and 20s- that could have cost me dearly, but I made it through.
