2015 Honda Fit EX (6-Speed Manual) - WR TV POV Test Drive

  • Honda’s venerable hatchback sees big changes for 2015. How big? How about a new platform, new engine and transmissions, and a new look. The new 5-door is 1.6 inches shorter than the outgoing model, but also weighs in at 100 pounds more, due to more substantial use of high-strength steel in its construction, which provides significantly bolstered chassis rigidity for added safety and improved handling. Despite its shrinking dimensions, the Fit’s new platform actually expands on both front and rear passenger space dramatically.
    A new suspension design allowed engineers to move the rear seats nearly 5 inches farther away from the front, netting rear legroom that now exceeds the generous amount offered in the Accord sedan. The tradeoff is a drop in cargo space, which goes from the 21 cubic feet found in the 2014 model to 17 cubic feet, turning a former segment leader into a mid-pack runner.
    Powered by a 1.5-liter, direct injected four cylinder motor making 130 horsepower and 114 lb-ft of torque (increases over 2014 of 13hp and 8 foot-pounds over the outgoing model) the Fit is capable of hitting 60mph from rest in a fairly brisk 8.5 seconds. Our tester is fitted with a six-speed manual transmission, and while we enjoyed rowing our own gears, we did note that the clutch was less receptive to being hustled than we would have liked.

      You'd love it! I have a 2013 and it saved me from serious injuries hitting a deer on the highway at 70 MPH. Mine doesn't have a ton of get up and go but a $2,500 turbo or supercharger could change that. You'll also love the fact that you can switch out the engine if it blows for less than 1k. I can replace mine with a engine that has 9k on it for $750. Save up!! That's what I did and had my father co sign to get a crazy interest rate of .94% (it's unbelievable but it's all on my paperwork)

    • @mnhsty

      It's not Honda engine noise that keeps me from buying one. It is road noise. Supposedly the newer ones are better but I haven't tested yet. For now I will stick with my Golf.

      I couldn't agree more with this. For 18k, what the hell more do you want? If its underpowered they complain about that, and if its sufficiently powered they complain about the road noise. If you want sound-proofing, go for a $30k+ luxury car.

    • @BrooksHuber
      @BrooksHuber 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The LX has less materials in it to keep the outside noise out. The EX has more soundproofing built inside it. Maybe the 'journalist' are complaining about the LX, but I doubt it -- they're testing the EX and above.
      EDIT: also, the EX has the moonroof, so maybe that's a factor?!

We settled on black because we couldn't find a blue 6 speed. If you're only finding one, it may be a sign that they aren't selling and you may be able to haggle the dealer.

    • @Gnaw85
      @Gnaw85 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that's because that most parents failed to teach their kids how to drive manuals, leading to a whole generation who never experienced the joy of driving it. From what I understand, manuals are very popular in European countries and the rest of the world since if you don't learn how to drive them, you get a lower class driver license that only allows you to drive automatics.
      Plus most people here in the States are buying automatics, and most manual drivers are willing to settle with automatics, I bet dealers don't see the point of selling manuals anymore... Maybe you could try and order one from them?

    • @cargogh
      @cargogh 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The one I ordered arrived 9-15. The 6th gear seems low, but a daily 40 mile country drive at 60-65 mph is yielding 40.5 mpg every morning. Have put on 1600 miles in two weeks. Very happy I waited for the manual. It is fun to drive.

I also know for a fact you could've bought a 2016 Camry Le for that same price ( 19,000) since my friend did just that. He was offered 14,000 for a Nissan Versa though, which is also a subcompact car..... To be honest, I can't understand why people even buy anything under mid sized. Also the thing spins at like 3k rpm at 60 mph. I know it's a small engine but what the hell is the point of the sixth gear. One other thing I noticed that was really weird... The thing has no carpet!! I think it was the sound deadening material that's suppose to go under the carpet that was covering the floor. Over all I liked the car but I wouldn't pay for a new one, I'll wait for a certified used one.

    An okay car. 130 horsepower, not too bad I guess. I would probably go for the CVT. Although I’ll always prefer manual transmission no matter what. But this car, with the manual, going on the highway, or roadtrips, is the issue. Like what I saw in this video, going 70 MPH on 6th gear, the RPM is sitting around 3400-3500 RPM. Meaning, the engine is always loud when cruising on the highway. It’s like driving an old automatic car without the overdrive button on.

      A lot of debris gets kicked up by the front tires and hits the rear and when you have disc brakes there are a lot of exposed parts like calipers master cylinder, control springs, pads, disc etc... they will be damaged. Modern rear drums are cheaper to maintain and work much better than older designs. For economy cars like a Fit most people in North America should be happy with drum brakes on the rear. With my car that had disc on the rear, in 5 years driving 60k miles I had to replace a bent caliper, a cracked brake pad and get the disc rotor resurfaced as it was rusting and unevenly wearing becuase of it. These were issues only found on the rear. All issues that don't happen with rear drum. I know drum brakes are less performance but considering the front does 70-80% of the braking for daily driving its fine. I also had to change all disc 4 brake pads in that 5 year time for the front and rear. With drum you can expect 50k-150k miles for pad wear depending on how you drive.

    Nearing my dotage and living in Mexico. Some chick ran off the highway (probably sexting) and totaled my parked 1999 Jeep GC after my putting in eight years of repairs out the kazoo. (The 4.7 liter V8 was a real gas guzzler, so this Honda Fit is going to be nice on the gas mileage front.) This will likely be my last car. I am 78. Have driven stick most of my life. 30 years with a Honda Prelude 4WS 5spd MT (beautiful transmission, just needed a taller first gear as was slow off the block, but fifth gear was perfect for 80-90 mph highway touring; interestingly the HP and 0-60 for this MT6 Fit and my 1988 Prelude are almost identical). Also a 1978 Camaro 4 spd and a Ford Maverick 3 spd. Grateful for this guy's test drive as I have not had a chance to test drive one myself. I will be needing to travel 5 hours to Guadalajara to try and get a good deal on a used 2017 Sport MT6.

    Want a car (2011-2018) for putting an electric bicycle through the hatchback door and room for a dog (lab) as well, so Honda Fit probably makes sense as it has more room. Is the only upside to a Rio is that it is cheaper than a Fit?

    Just curious when yu turned onto that dirt road at right around the 2:50 mark, saw on the middle display that it switched to the camera view, even though you were going forward not backward, now why did that occur????? Wai a second, does this car have side view cameras one on each side of the car, so you can actualy get a better view of what might be on the sides of the car, all depending on which way your turning, right????

    • @harrisanwar141

    • @bigron9537
      @bigron9537 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That would be terrible. A big, heavy 2.4 in a tiny Honda....The engine would be to heavy on the front, causing ruined chassis balance and masses of understeer. A 1.8 is as big as it needs. Similar problems with awful cars such as the Volkswagen Golf R32 and the Audi TT. The Alfa Romeo 147 GTA is forgivable because of its sound, engine, pace and looks. Astra VXR's were simply horrendous. Clio V6's were terrible things. A big engine in a front drive car isn't a good idea. The only ones to master it are Renault, Peugeot and Ford.

    • @UnrelatedNonsense
      @UnrelatedNonsense 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I own a 2015 lx. I would say the car suspension is a little on the softer side compared to the Toyota yaris and Chevy sonic. The lx has less sound deadening so there is more wind and road noise. But I think the seats in the lx and exl are more comfortable than the ex cloth seats. It gets best in class fuel economy and is a lot of fun to drive. Hopefully this helps.

    • @conraddevera

      No problem. But going out and actually driving them will give you the best opinion isntead of relying on online reviews. Dealerships almost always want you to test drive before hand so give it a try one day.

      So the gear ratios: 2nd gen 1 through 4 = 3rd gen 1 through 5? That's a silly design for 3rd gen. Why add the gear.
      I thought the purpose of extra gear was lower rpms at highway speeds.

    • @zech007

      That engine power band is within 3000-4000 rpm because of its 1.5l displacement, small engines tends to have higher rpm.
