If you saw War Dawn G1, You know He is. He and Elita 1 according to Alpha Trion we're going to be rebuilt using the schematics used to rebuild Optimus Prime. It doesn't take rocket science to comprehend that.
Honestly, I like that answer, and it was basically what my mind arrived at after I saw the panel of Ultra Magnus. Why use one when you can use both characters?
since ultra Magnus didn't appear in any media before the movie and they directly called him prime's old friend,I think the theory of Dion being ultra Magnus can be canon someday
I just checked and his comic introduction happened a week later. In that one he is constructed to take part in Operation Volcano, but then goes to Earth and fights Galvatron, it's an ace story.
To me If we got a Transformers Movie done right with Dion I would see him start off as Dion but when rebuilt I would see as Ultra Magnus when promoted to leading His own unit As I would see PJ Byrne for Dion but when made into Ultra Magnus I would see him voiced by Peter Weller who would lead his team by Wreckers
I reckon Alpha Trion put Dion’s mind inside Magnum’s body saving them both into Ultra Magnus rather than everyone speculating on which one died and the other reformatted
Considering the speculating about Roller being Tarn leading up to the MTMTE conclusion, it would have been hilarious if Tarn ended up having been Dion instead.
Why not? Color scheme similarity, he’s a truck, he pulled prime’s trailer! Maybe he’s become such a pessimist due to his early experiences with war. And now prime just tells him to shut up because no one likes huffer.
Magnum's chassi and a generous donation of Dion's parts to keep Magnum alive. Said bits had enough of Dion's CNA to basically merge the two characters in subtle ways.
Or Magnum's parts were used for Dion, who would've been called something like "Ultra Dias", but instead chose to call himself "Ultra Magnus" in honor of Magnum.
At the risk of setting people off, I actually prefer the idea that Dion and most of the others died in War Dawn. Not only does this add gravitas to Optimus's character, but it also explains why he is so attached to Elita-1. Both of them saw their friends and coworkers brutally killed before them, and this helps to explain their devotion to saving the lives of their troops as well as each other. That being said, with all of the potential alternate dimensions out there, I would not be adverse to a Dion of an alternate timeline showing up where he had managed to survive.
Besides, people can and do have more than one "old friend", specially when you have a lifespan upwards of 9 million years... I never liked the rebuilt dion theory.
While this was a different bots origin, I like the idea that Dion might’ve been recovered by Megatron and rebuilt/corrupted into Tarn, all just to spite Optimus
That idea is awesome. Tarn might see Optimus as someone he was wrong to show his respect towards, seeing him as a threat to megaton that needs to be destroyed. He grew hatred for not just Optimus, but for Alita one and his brother ultra magnus, wanting the autobots to be destroyed.
one of my personal favourite theory's about Dion,is that he become ultra Magnus,it actually fits with what alpha trion was doing during the great war,and he already did it to optimus and elita
I love theory that AlphaTrion tried same procedure with Dion as he tried with Orion,but... something went wrong and he needed "life support system" to live and thus "Magnus Armor" was created.
This is an excellent update on this age old question. Personally I like the Dion/Magnus merge story and it would make an excellent animated story just like "War Dawn" did all those years ago....my son used to ask questions on that episode alone back when I introduced him to G1. Good times man and keep up the great work can't wait to see who is next obscure character....
I can see how Ariel being rebuilt into Elita-1 would sound like a cute idea on paper, but in my opinion it kind of removes the tension of that episode. If Ariel could be rebuilt, why not Dion as well? For that matter, why not rebuild every single Autobot that Megatron ever destroyed? Whereas if Orion Pax had been the only survivor, it would have made his recovery seem more like a miracle. Of course, I do love it when the Transformers fandom completely hijacks continuity. Maybe the whole reason why Ultra Magnus was able to be blown apart and put back together so quickly is somehow related to him being rebuilt last...
The war lasted for 9 million years, with most of the Transformers being alive for the majority of it. You say it in jest, but I'm pretty sure that most of the Transformers have been rebuilt countless times. How else could there be such a low causality rate in-universe? (The real answer, of course, is that it's a children's cartoon.)
I have some ways to hand wave it. On one hand, Orion was blasted but in the movie Perceptor outright mentions Prime's wounds were fatal and goes gray as he dies. Neither Orion nor his friends did become gray and Alpha Trion did have the confidence to patch him up so probably they actually didn't die but merely got into a coma (admittedly life-threatening maybe but not unfixable). Alternatively, assuming Dion did die, well, probably it just happened with the cybertronian equivalent of "surgery complications". Optimus and Elita became stronger but Dion probably merely couldn't survive the procedure even if Alpha Trion did try. And since cybertronian mwchanical bodies are different from humans, a lot of piercings, amputations and stabs are probably not inherently lethal nor permanently crippling assuming they can repair the damage, but some components are vital enough that you can still land a lethal hit on them and kill even if some other character gets nominally worse damage by human standards. Which is the reason why WFC Moonracer's demise feels just absurd to me.
Since Ultra Magnus’s “core” form is a white Optimus Prime, it makes sense Alpha Trion would’ve rebuilt him in the same strong body, and then upped the ante with the addition of the Magnus armor.
I'm of the mindset that Dion became Ultra Magnus. and if I go by what the club had to write, it's that Alpha Trion, not wanting to let either Dion or Magnum die, decided to instead merge them together. Dion's core conscious and spark would be put in a new body that would be the white recolor of prime's body while Magnum's core conscious and spark would be placed within the Magnus outer shell. Dion would be the host while Magnum would grant Dion access to the power of the armor.
I'm honestly hearing about this Dion for the first time. But this concept of a figure from Optimus' previous life as "Orion Pax" that mysteriously disappeared only for fans to speculate about idea of him becoming a new character in Optimus' present life as a Prime, truly reminds me of Roller from IDW comics and the entire theory about him becoming Tarn... Personally, that would be an interesting twist in some future incarnation of Dion. Orion's best friend and fellow archivist, that mysteriously disappeared in face of war's beginning. Leaving it unclear which side he decided to join.
I’m surprised this dude hasn’t made a basics video on the transformers theme song. Knowing that he did basics videos on rub signs, box art and the comics.
I wish the club comic had just explicitly had them combine what was left of their original selves into Ultra Magnus so they could both fight on in some capacity. Fusion into a new being, more than the sum of their parts, their common friendship with optimus and heroic personalities keeping them going? That would have been cool as. Imagine the interplay of two people who used to be an elite soldier and a humble worker respectively trying to make sense of who they are now they’re one consciousness. But by being coy about it they create this schrodinger’s disappointment- if Dion lived, why does he now look like his dead commanding officer for no actual reason other than the metatextual joke, thus taking you out of the story? And if Magnum lived, dion’s just dead, retcon’d out, and it didn’t matter. Sometimes when you nod to fanon you need to make sure you’re not about to smack your head into something in the process.
I don't know if someone has already said this, but what if instead of just 1 of them, alpha trion used whatever parts he could salvage from both of them, and then brought him to life with 1 of their sparks?
It wouldve been cool if he got turned into roller like in idw. After Pax and Ariel turned into Prime and Elita, Dion turned into Roller, who eventually went missing, which inspired Optimus to refer to the roller drone as Roller in his memory or maybe its not a drone and its whats left of Roller. I think it would wrap up nicely as Magnus is usually just Magnus and gives Roller some love because if hes just missing or just shrunk, the trio is still around but with this video in mind and the Wings universe origin, and the Netflix series, Dion being Magnus wouldnt be far off
With legacy evolution armada hot shot, and legacy prime arcee and siege chromia,I think we can get another legacy 2 pack with Dion being a repaint of hot shot and Ariel being a repaint and retool of prime legacy arcee or siege chromia

The way Optimus mentions Ultra Magnus' body size supports the fact that the brain//mind of the prepared one is Dion. Along with the movie reference from 86 it seems like Ultra Magnus is Dion but with borrowed body parts
Not knowing a whole lot about Transformers but finding this channel really interesting, I liked this video a lot. I think the classic fan tendency to have to connect the dots on everything is a little silly, Ultra Magnus can simply just be Prime's old friend and that not have to mean anything, but I also really respect the club comic's ending in utter ambiguity just to keep the mystery alive.
I always envisioned that some characters 'live on' forever (Optimus, Megatron, Bumblebee, Starscream) and some 'die on' (Dion) forever. As in: the mistery is being kept alive intentionally, akin to Elvis Presley or Adolf Hitler in real life, where -though confirmed dead- all kinds of speculation was/is going around that they had actually survived their confirmed moment of death.
This is the first I'm learning of this character or this debate, but I already love it. Strikes me as the Autobot equivalent of "was Cyclonus made from Bombshell or Skywarp" debate, which always seemed like one of the greatest fan debates in this franchise.
Personally I’d like to think that he did survive the attack and was rebuilt into a new form but he didn’t survive the war or even didn’t survive long enough for the ark to go to earth.
There are five Arialbots. They can all fly and combine. Yet they chose to only have two of them carry Orion Pax by hand to wherever until Alpha Trion noticed them 🙄 . I can only assume because the original script had Ariel and Dion die before the change for Elita One.
I can see the comic cover now for "Optimus Prime's Pal Dion" And the story promises that Prime went mad from drinking blue energon and now is flying around trying to find a cowering Dion so he can reconfigure him into a dumpster or something, "You can hide, but you can't hide, old chum!"
I’ve always thought Dion was Magnus for the simple reason that their similar alt modes (g1 cabs were just repaints) would indicate a similar builder at a similar time. The reason Magnus had the armor was to serve as an “armored Optimus Prime” in the case if Optimus died, which he did in the movie
Dion,is he a pre war ultra Magnus,or he is magnum,or he did actually die and ultra Magnus replaced him,or Dion survived,or ultra Magnus was built from both magnum and Dion, what a confusing character
I have a pet theory that Dion's mind was considered "lost" but not his spirit and he was downgraded into Optimus Prime's Roller droid. This tragedy is also why Optimus never explained who Roller is. Alpha Trion was able to reformat Dion to be an eternal sidekick to Optimus
My personal theory is that Dion was rebuilt into Magnus, but it took a while. I believe after Alpha Trion built Optimus and Elita-1, he rebuilt Dion into another Optimus Prime to help him protect important areas of Cybertron from the Decepticons. Alpha Trion would later upgrade his Optimus design and rebuild Dion into the Ultra Magnus we know today.
While I loved all the theories, the one I always had was he became roller. So was always with his best friend. Then IDW evolved Roller into a full on Bot and I had hoped they would have gone that way...then unicorn and reboot happened.
To be honest, I am sure that Dion became Ultra Magnus because he was Optimus' old friend. Now that you reviewed about his origins, I have no confirmation that if Dion became Ultra Magnus or not. Who knows till they revealed it in the comics one day.
i hope we never get an answer to this .... Ultra Magnus is one of my favourite characters and i love the mystery of his origins and the hidden robot inside
In a fanfic I have Dion died long before Orion Pax came online. He was a hero who gave his life to drive the Quintisons of Cybertron and is remember on the holiday Dion's Day.
Something I think would serve as a great plot for Dion is that since he, Prime, Magnus, and Alita-1 all have prior history they all might have different methods of dealing with the Decepticon Menace and their own Traumatic experience with the War. It would be awfully clever for Dion's supposed death to be an excellent cover for an under cover persona, Nemesis Prime.
i always imagine that Dion and Magnum were basically fused together to become Ultra Magnus, kind of explaining the smaller robot and the armor being parts of each bot merged together
Also Dion being the one rebuilt would explain why he looks like a White Optimus as they where both rebuilt by Alpha Trion then it make sense that he used the same project for both
Two logical reasonable guesses at the next Dion toy at the end and neither ended up being right. I appreciate it when things don't work out in a predictable way.
Idk I kinda prefer the idea that Dion is just Dion, maybe he survived maybe he didn't, either way he just didn't take on a new persona. And that Ultra Magnus is just one of Optimus old mates from like the Autobot military academy or something. Side note: I'd love a show about Ultra Magnus and Orion pax as like college roommates and Orion just wants to party while Magnus is always waste deep in books.
I do really like the idea of him being ultra Magnus, especially when we consider that in some cases Ultra Magnus is known to have the same chassis as Optimus prime, as if they both were made using the new battle ready form.
I always loved thr idea of Dion being Ultra Magnus. Just seemed far fetched enough to make sense. But when they put Dion and Magnum together, I feel it'd hardly up for debate who became Uktra Magnus. I mean LOOK at Magnum and Magnus lol
The theory that Dion was rebuilt as Ultra Magnus is a good one, but I do also like the easy option and saying he just didn't make it. It keeps some of the tragedy David Wise originally intended.
My fan-canon/theory has always been that Alpha Trion had 3 bodies of the Optimus Prime model: a red, a white and a black. Orion got the red model while Dion got the white model, but because his spark was weaker because it took longer to rescue his body and take to AT, the white body needed enhancements to keep him alive, so the add-on armor given to the white body was done to save him. And obviously the black model goes on to become Nemesis but that origin story is for another time.
So is Ironhide or Ultra Magnus or Kup redone by Alpha Trion???? We may never know with how the TF movie introduced the new characters. Great video of Dion.
The only "evidence" is the line about Magnus being his old friend, as if Optimus didn't make any more friends after he was rebuilt. He was still on Cybertron for a few million Earth years before the Ark incident, four million years in stasis lock, and was around for a couple decades before his first death. I'm sure he had time to make a few more old friends, like Ironhide and Ratchet. I'm not saying it's impossible, though apparently Hasbro did, I'm saying one line of dialog is not evidence of Magnus' origins anymore than "I can't deal with that now" is evidence of not being compassionate about losing people when he and his crew are still under attack and poised to join them.
I suppose he's effectively been covered in a few other videos but it is surreal to realize there hasn't actually been a basics on him yet - that needs to change!
Given everything that is we know about Dion, I personally believe Dion did not survive his injuries given that it was the case right from the start. I would also argue that his injuries (though not as bad as it could have been due to TV censors) may have been too lethal to repair, implying he died instantaneously The only way I could feasibly see Dion returning is bring him back as a "ghost", much like how Starscream was able to return. It would give The Autobots much needed assistance when dealing with him. Not to mention, the idea of "Resources Transport" is so generic you could apply it to the potentially BILLIONS of bots from the Golden Age of Cybertron. Granted, there is always a chance he will come back, either as a ghost or from another universe
I recently thought of another reinterpretation of Dion: He would still be a friend of Orion Pax, but they would have a falling out later in life, caused by their different outlooks on the solution to the Cybertron’s unfair and corrupt regime. Orion would sought to solve everything peacefully, while Dion would believe that it can only be solved with power and destruction. He would create his own faction, and he would also change his name, become a new bot, much like how Orion changed into Optimus. Dion would name himself after one of the 13 Primes. The one whose face was an inspiration for his faction’s insignia. The bots that were once friends would become mortal enemies. And their conflict would only end in one way: One shall stand, and one shall fall.
He would be D-16 first, then name himself Dion, and then rename himself after the Fallen, dropping the “-us” at the end, so that his name still ends with “-on”. This just writes itself.
I'm pretty sure Dion just croaked. Orion and Optimus were both red and blue, Ariel and Elita were pink and white, but none of the Autobots around at the time (RL/toyline wise) were blue and yellow except Seaspray, and that seems like a colossal stretch considering Seaspray was a water vehicle and Dion was a land vehicle. Looking forward, blue and yellow Autobots include Punch, Nightbeat, and Slapdash, none of which seem too likely, though if I were doing the writing, I'd make him Punch/Counterpunch. Trying to get in close to Megatron by earning his trust as a Decepticon double agent, possibly slowing discord from within the ranks, that sort of thing. (I may have missed some blue and yellow Autobots, but that's all I could easily find.)
I _would_ be all for the Dion=UltraMagnus thing if it weren't for one stupid little thing; their colours. The red-white-and-blue Orion Pax became the red-white-and-blue Optimus Prime, the pink Ariel (Arial?) became the pink Alita One, and the orange-and-blue Dion became... the blue-white-and-red Ultra Magnus..? I'm not saying it's impossible, but... it seems pretty obvious to me that that wasn't the original writers' intentions at all.
The club comic deliberately keeping it unknown whether or not Dion became Ultra Magnus is god-tier trolling and I respect them for it.

They could be mistaken for a guardian robot if they did it.
The thing you have to remember here is the Aerialbots are assholes.
Funnily enough we did get a new Dion three months later! Just as a Kup remold instead, and a pretty nice-looking one at that
Am I the only one who sees the irony in the character who may have become Ultra Magnus having his fate left an Unsolved Mystery? 👀
I can see the comic cover now for "Optimus Prime's Pal Dion"
And the story promises that Prime went mad from drinking blue energon and now is flying around trying to find a cowering Dion so he can reconfigure him into a dumpster or something, "You can hide, but you can't hide, old chum!"
Its not that confusing.
"You aren't suppose to know" thats it
STOP COPY-PASTING COMMUNITY POST COMMENTS.
What if Dion was really the friends we made along the way
To be honest, I am sure that Dion became Ultra Magnus because he was Optimus' old friend.
It really is amazing how difficult they make their own continuity sometimes
I’m glad he’s finally getting a new toy
Lol, Ultra Magnus really is the Cyclonus of the Autobots.
That's hilarious Hasbro deliberately going fuck you you're never going to know, that's some God tier trolling
I always liked the fact that he died. It showed that death was something that happened in war, even unheroic deaths.
He must’ve become Ultra Magnus, and I will Dion that hill
In a fanfic I have Dion died long before Orion Pax came online. He was a hero who gave his life to drive the Quintisons of Cybertron and is remember on the holiday Dion's Day.
Something I think would serve as a great plot for Dion is that since he, Prime, Magnus, and Alita-1 all have prior history they all might have different methods of dealing with the Decepticon Menace and their own Traumatic experience with the War. It would be awfully clever for Dion's supposed death to be an excellent cover for an under cover persona, Nemesis Prime.
"Alita"
would love to see more seeker videos on characters like sunstreaker
i always imagine that Dion and Magnum were basically fused together to become Ultra Magnus, kind of explaining the smaller robot and the armor being parts of each bot merged together
Also Dion being the one rebuilt would explain why he looks like a White Optimus as they where both rebuilt by Alpha Trion then it make sense that he used the same project for both
Not gonna lie, I laughed at seeing Dion's first toy
So therefore Hasbro will try and recreate that 1st toy using the new Wheelie mold
I never realized before how close of a fit Cup would be for Orion Pax.
Side note:
I'd love a show about Ultra Magnus and Orion pax as like college roommates and Orion just wants to party while Magnus is always waste deep in books.
I do really like the idea of him being ultra Magnus, especially when we consider that in some cases Ultra Magnus is known to have the same
chassis as Optimus prime, as if they both were made using the new battle ready form.
I always loved thr idea of Dion being Ultra Magnus. Just seemed far fetched enough to make sense. But when they put Dion and Magnum together, I feel it'd hardly up for debate who became Uktra Magnus. I mean LOOK at Magnum and Magnus lol
I think dion is the bot that wasn’t able to be saved perhaps in the same category as cliff jumper as bots meant to have their sparks extinguished
I love that a dude literally named Die-on can't die.
The theory that Dion was rebuilt as Ultra Magnus is a good one, but I do also like the easy option and saying he just didn't make it. It keeps some of the tragedy David Wise originally intended.
THE BASICS on THE CYBERTRONIC SPREE when? Ravage just dropped!!
I don't know why, but whenever I get a notification on the latest The Basics video, I feel as if my day just got better
I like the idea that Trion used the parts of the dead autobot to repair the alive one so they both ended up becoming Magnus.
Another excellent entry Chris!
Yeah, a great debate for the ages.
"The mystery of Dion's fate remains unsolved."
Nice Robert Stack reference. 👍
Dion's offlined, one of the many casualties on the Decepticon list.
I like the Dion and Magnum fusing to become Ultra Magnus
Have two sparks merge to one
And now he's got a toy! So does Ariel!
I remember somewhere, there was a theory Dion was Jazz, mostly due to the aditude of Jazz, and Jazz being Prime's right hand/second in command.
So is Ironhide or Ultra Magnus or Kup redone by Alpha Trion???? We may never know with how the TF movie introduced the new characters. Great video of Dion.
Love these videos man! Learn so many cool things I never knew about TF!
For the comic, perhaps he just put them both together and called it a day
Pete Sinclair has privately said in recent years that Magnum is Ultra Magnus and Dion died in the club comic.

It should have been Dion in Transformers One instead of B-127.
I think the same
The only "evidence" is the line about Magnus being his old friend, as if Optimus didn't make any more friends after he was rebuilt.
I always assumed he was recreated as a French Canadian singer, renamed Celine Dion, and made a bunch of number one hit songs.
I've since moved him on but dion was my first club toy when I was 7. Loved that figure.
I like that the airelbots went to the past and they met Orion pax
I'm hoping for The Basics on Metroplex since his Legacy toy came out this year.
I suppose he's effectively been covered in a few other videos but it is surreal to realize there hasn't actually been a basics on him yet - that needs to change!
Given everything that is we know about Dion, I personally believe Dion did not survive his injuries given that it was the case right from the start. I would also argue that his injuries (though not as bad as it could have been due to TV censors) may have been too lethal to repair, implying he died instantaneously
The only way I could feasibly see Dion returning is bring him back as a "ghost", much like how Starscream was able to return.
I recently thought of another reinterpretation of Dion:
He would still be a friend of Orion Pax, but they would have a falling out later in life, caused by their different outlooks on the solution to the Cybertron’s unfair and corrupt regime.
I feel like we should get more of Dion
Dion and Erial are getting Legacy Evolution figures!!!!
Only a matter of time until we get the basics on Eriel. Maybe next Obscure Characters Month.
Just update elita-1...
Named my car dion, so this is such a great episode 😂
Wow, it’s hard to get more obscure than a Dion backstory 😆
I _would_ be all for the Dion=UltraMagnus thing if it weren't for one stupid little thing; their colours. The red-white-and-blue Orion Pax became the red-white-and-blue Optimus Prime, the pink Ariel (Arial?) became the pink Alita One, and the orange-and-blue Dion became... the blue-white-and-red Ultra Magnus..? I'm not saying it's impossible, but... it seems pretty obvious to me that that wasn't the original writers' intentions at all.
I enjoy the theory of Dion being Ultra Magnus :D
All the details line up perfectly for it.
That last bit is McFeely just attempting to manifest toys into existence 😛
