  • De'Longhi supplies a water hardness testing strip with every bean to cup and premium pump coffee machine so that you can instruct your machine on the hardness (limescale) level of your tap water supply. The machine will then automatically remind you when to run it's auto descale programme.
Descaling is very important to keep your machine in optimum condition and avoid breakdowns.
Here is a quick, guided procedure on how to interpret the test results.

Not helpful. First, the video says to dip for a few seconds. I followed the instructions on the strip, which specified one (1) second. Which is correct? Also, it would be SUPER HELPFUL if you showed EXAMPLES of the 4 possibilities for the strip. I will keep searching the internet for something more helpful. This video was disappointing.

This video is flat out wrong. Yes, put the strip into the water for about one second. Remove and wait 60 seconds. The strip has 4 boxes that turn color, either green or red. Note the red is more of a yellow-pink color, let's describe it as a color other than green. It is the combination of these 2 colors and number of squares that determine your water hardness. I use Poland bottled water exclusively and it tested as 4 green boxes, Extremely Soft which is of course best for the flavor of coffee and the longevity of the machine/boiler.

How is what you said different to the video? 4 non green squares (as shown in the video) = very hard water.

I didn't understand anything from my water reading. Right.. So I dipped in water few sec., it show me 4 squares. 1st is 90% red, 2nd 50% red, 3rd 40% red, 4th 20% red. So what is my reading? I leave in Scotland, Falkirk.

If you can't see the colour difference, you're colour blind.

Maybe you live in heaven where the water isn't polluted at all and has no extra minerals in it, just H₂O

None of mine changed colour, what does that mean?

I had the same experience, after 10minutes I gave it a 2nd dip, this time for about 4seconds instead of 1second. Then I left it out to dry for an hour, then all became clear. The colour change is just not clear after 60seconds, I could barely decide whether the first square had changed colour and was not even considering whether the other 3 had changed, but after an hour 2 squares had clearly dried red and 2 had dried green/blue. I have an electronic TDS meter and it read 194 which seems just right for 2 squares. Good drinking water is 50-100, Average 100-200, Acceptable 200-300, Undesirable 300-400, 400-500 Don't drink it for long if you can.
