We have a new tradition here at Missouri Star: Triple Play! Once a month, Jenny, Misty, and Natalie each demonstrate their own, unique take on a favorite block, technique, or template. This week these talented Doan ladies are showing off three adorable projects made with the quilt-as-you-go house templates by Daisy and Grace.
Jenny's Quilt As You Go 4" House Garland is made with the large house template, precut batting, and 10" squares of precut fabric (layer cake). Jenny's fabric is "Bubbies Buttons and Blooms" by Kori Turner Goodhart for Windham Fabric. Jenny attaches her quilted houses to her banner with two-hole buttons that are sewn by machine using a zigzag stitch.
Natalie's Quilt As You Go 3" Cozy House Pillow is made with the medium house template and 10" squares of precut fabric (layer cake). Her fabric is Woolies Flannel Desert Sunset 10" Squares by Bonnie Sullivan for Maywood Studio. Best of all, she uses the same layer cake to make a second project: the Quilt As You Go 3" Cozy House Bonus Table Runner!
Misty's Around The Block Table Runner is made with the smallest house template and 5" squares of precut fabric (charms). Misty used Pure Delight by Melanie Collette for Riley Blake Designs.

I played with the contents of Grandma's button drawer from her treadle sewing machine. I also got to sew some on that machine and try to make things. This was all before my sixth birthday. I still love buttons and playing with fabric.

Love the projects, ladies! Natalie has such a logical brain for quilting. These templates are so versatile! If you turn the house upside down, it's a great little banner shape. Using the "plus sign" configuration like Misty did, you could easily make a set of those pot/pan protectors they sell in stores.

This was fun to watch. The littlest house project looks like an old fashioned mosaic piece. When Misty started her layout by putting 4 same color pieces together with points toward the center I realized that if I put small background squares in the 4 corners It would change the look to a flower block which could then be sewed together straight. That also worked nicely and looks good. Thanks for the ideas. You all are great teachers.

  • @victoriaheckman5933

You could little loops on them for little ornaments. Or if you could use that special print on fabric to print a picture onto the fabric, then fussy cut around it with your template so that the little family members face would be in the house for the ornament or banner (Or pillow).

  • @LaLaLauraJ10

For the banner, you could put buttons (all same size) on the ribbon, and button holes at the top of the little houses/banners, so that you could swap out the messages.

My Mom did the same thing with her buttons. She had a fishbowl full of them, and on rainy days, she'd dump them out onto her bed and have us sort the buttons. She never threw away a button. Old clothes got patched until it wasn't possible to do it any longer, then she'd harvest the buttons and zippers before making cleaning rags with the cloth.

  • @bethkoch11

I love the hexagon templates and I think these are just as fun. I made a sewing machine cover from the hexagons, and one thing that worked well for me is I used a mini iron to press the borders as I turned them. I was finding that my borders looked pretty wonky, and giving them a little press with the mini iron helped a lot to keep them more uniform, and make them behave before I pinned them.

Thanks for a lesson in quilt-as-you-go. I think I'd quilt down the centres before folding in the edges... it just feels like it would be less likely to go all "wonky" while doing the edge-folding step. I LOVE the idea of applique'ing a letter to each shape; then the banner could spell out literally anything. And because they are kind of skinny, they also could be used to make gift tags. These would make great coasters if I added a layer of insul-brite. And the idea of having a take-along hand-sewing project is brilliant. So many possibilities! Thanks for the inspiration, Jenny, Natalie & Misty (& MSQC team). ~Diana K. (Hamilton, Ontario).

I love the button banner! You could add a second bigger button in the middle and make them look like a birdhouse! Do all three sizes on the string! :)

I love the box idea! You could leave one diagonal seam on the bottom open so they can fold and store flat when not in use.
