I was introduced to reggae in the early 1970's. Luckily it came to me much like putting shoe on. I play mainly roots reggae. It has been my love since the '70's.
Thank you for this, it's the best begining reggae video I've seen I think I finally get it! I'm a metal head who just channeled a reggae song one day for no reason and I never knew what to do with it so I have to learn the basics, it's so beautiful I can't let the song fade away so I'm gunna learn and it's not easy. Such a different style. Thank you!
Great insights! Especially the part of playing on the upper three strings so as to not muddy things up with the mid frequencies being played by the keyboards. I wish more musicians would understand the role of their instrument in a song and the range of frequencies that they should be targeting.
Thank you. I have always struggled with the "count" in reggae. I can seldom find the ONE of 1-2-3-4, lol. This was helpful. Perhaps I need to stop counting and just feel it.
WOW, FINALLY somebody with the right qualifications giving some authentic reggae lessons!!! As I go through the lessons, please let me know if I can reach out to you if I have trouble and how to best do so (email?). THANK YOU AND ONE LOVE. PEACE!!!
@@playreggaeguide Thanks brother! It's easy to forget to check back for a reply! Anyway, I like to find songs and try to play along but my ears aren't developed enough to pick out the chords so I'm usually not playing them right. Common sense tells me I should just keep trying until it sounds right. Any other suggestions or tips for making this process easier? I like those AHA! moments. BE SAFE!!!
Nice. You have great a way of getting your message across. I picked up more about reggae rhythms in my first visit to your site than I have in years. Thank you very much.
Great tutorial. As a reggae keyboardist who also plays guitar, this is the best tutorial I’ve seen on TH-cam. As a keyboardist, I look forward to playing with a guitarist with this tone. It makes the bubble sounds great and I don’t have to move up an octave to sound like reggae on the piano hand.
I like how you said play mainly the three high strings. I was wondering how they get the keyboard and guitar to sound like one instrument to get that cool rhythm.
thanks for this video. i have loved reggae my whole life, but never understood the differences..... my new favorite is a band of white boys from oakland, california called "stick figure." their rythyms and lyrics are brilliant....
Many thanks for a very Informative and useful beginners lesson. Was having some trouble with the action and timing. Will take you advice and I!m enthusiastic to practice. Thanks for the motivation that I needed.👍🎸😎
Great video. I'd seen a few videos advocating double press of the strings on the double chuck which I cannot do and have always done it like this video press on the downstroke and release on the upstroke. I was starting to think I wasn't authentic but this reaffirms my style. BTW I play guitar in a tribute band and have a fb page called Reggae Guitar. Have a look, see what you think.
So they do fret it incompletely, not touching the fret at all, and it doesn't matter if it's not as precise an intonation as if it was completely fretted. And the wah can be stuck in that position?
Hello and Greetz from Germany. first of all, Thank you for your lesson! Second, when i do down and up stroke, must i release the strings short as possible after the up stroke or before i do the up stroke? Sorry about my english, it's not the best.
Hello! I was wondering if a right hand damping technique with open string chords is ever used in reggae or are only moveable chords with left hand damping only used? I have written a couple songs using the right hand technique but would like to do away with it immediately if this is incorrect lol. I was taught the right hand technique by a guitar teacher years ago but he did not have much experience with reggae music. Also thank you so much for this video and your content 🤙🏾 🌺 ❤️
this leassons are great!!! just one cuestion, im really starting, what tunes are you using here?? and do you know what ones uses j boog??? thank you so much
how do you feel about someone using an auto wah pedal? I am still dealing with some nerve damage in my right foot from an injury last year. Keeping my foot on a pedal and rocking it back and forth is tough for me until I fully heal. I want to buy an auto wah to get me by for now
1 law in music: If it sound good, play it.
Not even that is a law for music in general :-)
This is a tautology :)
Learning to play! This sounds good to me! 💞
Sounds good to you or what ?
Well said!

Thanks for laying it out so well. It’s not hard and I think that’s the beauty of it, that it is so relaxed and yet groovy at the same time.
Glad you like it!
I don't play but as a listener of music it is good for me to watch these tutorials so that I truly know what I am hearing
Yessi bless up, Braddah!
The hardest part of playing music is listening!! I bet when you’re ready to play, you’d learn so fast!!
I respect that so much ! Such a cool outlook
Thanks for the cool tips love reggae 🇯🇲🇹🇹
Been playing for 50 years but never tried reggae.... excellent easy to grasp video; thank you my friend.

So they do fret it incompletely, not touching the fret at all, and it doesn't matter if it's not as precise an intonation as if it was completely fretted.
And the wah can be stuck in that position?
