that's got to be the best intro to any Hard Rock song in history
Thunderstruck from ACDC my friend🤟

I mean, there's a lot of great intros but this is definitely in the top 5 or 10!
@@justthisguyyouknow42definitely not lol. Great but definitely not top 10
I think its the greatest opening to an album. One of the greatest albums ever recorded too.
This riff is amazing. Definitely not as simple as Slash makes it out to be. Lol. Slash was definitely one of the few that truly made me pick up a guitar. Thank you Slash.
Very easy. 6 note walk down, pick each note twice except for the last two (one two, one two, one two, one two, one, one). Throw on reverb, then tinker with it until it resounds before the second pick, i.e. so that it sounds like each note is picked three times with the last two sounding like they're picked twice (one two three, one two three, one two three, one two three, one two, one two - or, pick reverb pick, pick reverb pick, pick reverb pick, pick reverb pick, pick reverb, pick reverb).
@@hanburgundy4317
So one of those notes is actually the echo of a note already played?
I’ve been trying to pick them all and it’s pretty tough getting them all in at that speed
@@minnesotajack1 Yeah, you can hear the delay/echo he's using on this video. Just those 6 decending notes, delay set to quarter notes with several repeats.
@@BrettEPierce That's not right. On the recorded song the delay is only on those first two notes before the riff starts. He has a tiny bit of delay here but the sound comes from the open E which he explains here. He's playing the descending riff but between each note he's picking that open E. It's really freaking hard to do it.
I don't hear that open E at all 😮 I made mine sound similar unplugged so maybe if I play it with a delay, it'll sound similar but I really can't hear it despite this video
Slash is a national treasure.
Gary Moore and The Edge are better.

That title would go to Keith Richards but I’d say Slash is a close #2.
Slash isn't real bro. Like Santa Claus
@@stephenhurd1489LIES!!! I saw him in a mall once...
Saw an interview where the guy asked Slash what he’s doing when not on the road. He said- “Taking guitar lessons”. He complimented this jazz guitarist that was giving him lessons and really opening up his playing and composing on the guitar. So cool 😎.
‘Slash explains fuck all.’
Hahah right he like I just do this😮
He actually does explain it.. but explaining and doing are two different things on guitar. A thing simply explain can takes years of toil to do
He explained it. It's a melody pedaling on the open E. Now playing it is different story
@@hotman718 lol ya...pedalling the open "E". Not "B" which is what he is ACTUALLY playing. I love Slash explains nothing videos lol.

Good to see Nikki is finally getting a lesson. Pretty soon he might actually be able to play one.
Nikki is taking bass lessons, blues guitar lessons, plays piano, and has written many of Motley Crue's songs, (around 50), wrote music and lyrics.
@@gedaom Yeah, that's why they have to play a tape when they are live. He has lost ALL credibility. He should just take all the money he fraudulently earned and go away.
@@dbdb703 they use tape for other things, like a cello in a ballad, or other music parts, but they do play live
@@dbdb703 that's such a terrible boomer take. Although it depends on the genre and the band itself, there's tons of bands that plays live that goes back for more than 50 years up until now uses tracks to add ambiance, body and more to their sound.
They're not a band that plays on their garage, they play on huge stadiums and venues and great audience experience is one of the goals. Therefore they need to use tracks for better production quality on their live shows. You clearly have no idea what you're talking about.
Yea, the dude is a complete FRAUD.
the epitome of keep it simple, a stonking tone and a simple riff turns into one of the best intro's of all time
It’s not simple though, if you look up sheet music for it even a lot of that will be incorrect cause there’s so many little in between plucks you barely hear but makes it sound just right
@@jtluns9 just keep practicing buddy, eventually certain riffs come as naturally as breathing 👍
@@jtluns9It's the delay pedal that does all the work of those "in between" notes. The song is in 4/4, but like The Edge made famous in U2, Slash used the trick where the echoes repeat in 3/4 in a sense (triplet delay). This creates a very rhythmic effect where the repeats happen on the "off-beats," and it makes something that is incredibly easy to play and on the beat sound much more rhythmically complex.
@@boardsaith5591yet if you post yourself playing this song or any song, I’d bet everything I own you play virtually everything wrong. People who believe guitarists like slash or even Kurt Cobain are “simple” just know how to play most of the right notes or chords, but not the right timing, or dynamics, or feel , etc. I’ve only heard smells like teen spirit intro riff played correctly by someone other than me or Kurt , maybe once in my life. The other 100 times it was played wrong.
@@Gcssdvnkloiutesc smells like teen spirit, take a walk 🤣
One of the most Iconic riffs in Rock History. Slash is one of my heros.
Along with Sweet Child O’ Mine and his solo on that song man that was insane
@@GnR_Editzz Absolutely. I agree!
The crowd is usually so quiet when they start that song because they want to hear every note ...amazing.
When I went to their show in Montreal the crowd went quiet just to hear it, the coolest thing ever.
If you pay attention it has an air...influence run like hell by pink floyd. .from the album the wall.

And then start cheering when Axl's scream starts. Because nobody wants to hear that 😅

This is why I play hairband music. Slash is the best of the best
That’s the thing about hair band music. To be a guitarist in the genre, you had to have a complete mastery of the instrument. Along comes Cobain with his rudimentary skills, and the “best” lead guitarist of grunge (Pearl Jam) had a modest collection of pentatonic licks that could be copied by anyone in their first year of playing.
@@minnesotajack1it all circles back. trace the lineage of hair metal.
@@minnesotajack1you’re forgetting Jerry Cantrell from Alice In Chains, who is a master of his instrument. I agree that many of the hair bands had legitimate fantastic musicians, but man, Cantrell can effing rock.
G n r isn’t hair and, they’re just bad ass rock and roll
GNR and any of slash's solo work is not hair music or hair bands or hair metal. It is hard Rock.

Whoa! Wait! ....What?! Motley Crue fired Mick Mars?! 😳 please tell me you're joking! Please.
Wish he did but I liked watching it and it's true I've never even given it a try on the guitar. Just dis and it is A monster lick
Such an iconic sound
Best opening ever
I couldn’t help but smile. Legend.
Just about every single guitarist gets this one wrong.
So in the VERY beginning, there is a delay. You're fretting the 4th fret G string, while alternate picking between the G and B strings a few times, then letting the delay trail off.
Somewhere, guitarists got it in their head that the pattern which follows this part (G 4th/2nd fret, D 4th/2nd fret, etc etc) is ALSO played with that delay, and the sound you're hearing is that same delay repeating the notes of that pattern.
This is completely wrong.
Telltale signs of this was that repeating B drone note in between the notes within that pattern that was never struck in the places it would have had to have been struck in order for the delay to continuously repeat the drone note like that. Also, you can clearly hear in the recording the dithering that's present when the delay is active, then the guitar sound on this part becomes more direct as the delay is switched off.
Taking the pattern into context, then realizing it was actually that pattern, but with the open B string struck in between each note...that was the secret.
I've tried to explain this to damn near every guitarist I know, only to get met with push back (no, it's that delay, you don't know what you're talking about). Funny how when I play it, it sounds exactly like the record. Even better now that we have a video coming straight from the horse's mouth confirming what I've known all along.
It is a difficult picking pattern to master, but once you do, that song becomes so fun to play just for that part alone.
Thank you so much for this!!!
Very good
Thanks for the quick tutorial. Trying to get some basic answers from musicians can be frustrating, humiliating, even terrifying! Haha! So many hidden landmines when navigating through a conversation with temperamental fragile ego musicians. It's gotten a lot better since TH-cam made guitar tricks and secrets an open source, free use, available to everyone resource. I understand it's like learning how magicians pull off their tricks and then standing in the back of the venue loudly proclaiming that "Oh, I know exactly how he did that." "It's really quite simple." "Here, I'll show you all how it's done," haha! But, so what if there are 20 million guitar players that can play circles around me, they didn't come up with my hook on the one hit wonder song that's still paying my rent after all these years. It's not all about you, Mr. Guitar God, you know who you are, it's about what sounds good to the folks who buy tickets and support our dwindling venues.
Step 1: don't tune your guitar
Step 2: make a bunch of mistakes
Step 3: record

That legendary intro was Slash's magixxx. No one could play as original as him
Slash threw my dad a pick when he went to go see him last fall!! Super cool guy, my dad accidentally dropped it and some kid got it so he decided to just let the kid have it which was super cool on his part, but it was a PICK FROM SLASH so idk how to feel 😭😭
That’s basically it lol

Good morning to everybody on youtube

Can we aske him to play any MC bassline ?
I was just thinking of the irony in this video. I’d love to see slash asking to play kickstart my heart and Nikki is all like “so that’s the end of today’s episode” 💀💀💀
#metaroast
Slash is a phenomenal composer!
Are we related?
Every decent guitarist, back in the day, could play this in like 5 minutes with a delay pedal, really?
A delay pedal 😂 yes he uses one on the record but he still alternate picks like he shows here, the delay pedal is only used to give the riff an echo. The alternate picking part is actually a bit tough
Sure, anyone can play it. If you want to make it sound identical, that's another story. I've been playing for almost 10 years, and in that time, you figure out that there is SO MUCH more to a riff than just being able to play it...
Its not an easy riff. In fact slash himself plays it different from the studio recording. He does the alternate picking part about 6 times in the intro then the last 3 times hes only hitting single strings in the recording. The timing is also difficult because it sounds quicker in the stuido recording than it actually is played, it sounds quicker because they used the delay on an SRV 2000 rack unit.
When he plays it live, and even here hes playing it faster than the recording.
Most likely played the riff wrong, and it never sounded like the actual riff, that slash plays
@@LewisLivingLife its a basic riff as far as notes are concerned, it takes a bit of practice to get down. What makes it difficult is the sliding on the initial note (this makes a difference), speed of the alternate picking, delay gear used (roland srv 2000 was used on the recording), tone (a marshall with a 36 mod was used). All of the above are why its difficult to replicate that intro.

Did he say “Open E” because then all the tutorials I see on TH-cam are wrong in that they all have use Open B instead. So did Slash misspeak or did I mishear? Anyone know?
He looked like he was having a flashback there for a moment. Rock on ! 🤘
I think I have never seen Slash without his sunglasses IN MY LIFE! (42yro)
oh my God...
For those who understand about music. Is he really that bad playing guitar how some people here is saying?
If we close our eyes, we will know that it is he who is playing, his timbre is unmistakable, a signature.... Unique!!!
How does it go?... So basically um 😅 🎶 🎸 and then an open E and then ahhh 🎶🎸🎶 and yeah that's it
In my acoustic guitar won't sound the open E like that, clearly I'm no musician, does he have it tuned in a not regular way? or is it me?
Man, can you imagine what it must of felt like when he came up with that riff and then everyone started contributing
Bruh 🥹🤯
MUST'VE been great.
I watched an interview, Slash didn't even like it much, he felt like it sounded like carnival music. Then Axl told him and Izzy to play that tune they'd been working on and put the words to it. The "where do we go now" part actually came from them saying that while making the song and not being sure what should be next in the song. I always feel so dumb because I come up with these deep meanings about lyrics in my head and 9 times out of 10 the artist wasn't really trying to say anything, it just made for a good tune lol.
Suena como si fuera slash tocando la intro de welcome to the jungle...
What weird is, it's super simple but sound awful unless played very precisely.
Slash é muito foda, coisa de gênio!!!

I’m confused… there’s no open E in there…
I’m pretty sure he meant to say open B…

He says there’s an open E but there isn’t 🤨
Cracks me up that Slash says many of the riffs he’s written developed from warm up exercises. Says he’d be warming up… Axl walks by and says “That sounds cool!”…… Slash: “uh………… ok”😂
He’s probably one of God’s coolest creations

The right hand is often overlooked when people talk about slash but damn so effortless 😮
Seen slash play for three fuxing hours live he is incredible, even whit the tricks just incredible
Haha how anyone who doesn’t understand music theory explains how to play things “its just… its like.. it goes like this” just shows that you dont have to learn things traditionally you can be self taught and still be amazing.
How did he do the police siren tho
“You just play it like this…” (creates the most mind blowing iconic intro to a song ever😂)
Slash is my grandfather
No way a professional musician or guitarist can’t hear that and not know how it’s played, it’s an incredible riff but it’s not hard to decipher
Pro guitar player here- it’s not the hardest lick, but to do it as easy as and clean as he does, is not at all easy or ordinary. Sweet Child is way easier. He doesn’t just play it, he sells it. He’d sound like slash playing it on any crap guitar.
did he slided ? When the bar is ended and he begins the new bar, he slided from 2 to 4th Fret on G* string, correct?

It’s simple Nikki, he doesn’t just do back tracking and actually plays his instrument
And also you have to use a delay pedal to get the vibe of the riff.
Love Slash! Absolute LEGENDARY GOAT!!!
Not saying that intro isn't noteworthy and awesome, but Nikki asking him how to play it was kinda cringe man. It's hard to build the muscle memory since it always comes back to that open E, but it's really not that complex to actually wrap your head around in terms of how it was composed.
He probably meant sweet child o mine but couldn’t remember the title 😂
