I followed this training vid and my dog picked it up literally in 1 minute. He's a chihuahua! Thank you kikopup you are by far the best dog trainer on TH-cam!!
This is the most helpful 'bow' video I've seen yet! Nice, slow, steady process. I made the mistake of trying to get my dog into a full bow position and training was chaotic with very little outcome. But i can't wait to try again, this time 'starting small' by rewarding that little shoulder dip. By the way, your dog is stunningly beautiful!!!
Awe thanks! Yes, I realize that some people who dont use a high rate of reinforcement might get shocked at how many treats Im giving, but this is just his puppy kibble and it was a full meal and training session in one. With other other training sessions I wouldnt give so many treats.
You are a great communicator! Often I watch training videos and I don’t understand why a dog is rewarded at one time but not another. You were able to explain that to humans without stopping the training session with the wonderful, handsome and highly intelligent dog. As I listened to your voice while you modeled the training, I noticed your voice was higher pitched than I used and you had energy in your voice, if that makes sense. Thanks, Emily! I am auditing a Seesaw class with Anna Hinze and the bow is one of the foundations to teach (especially little dogs) to weight shift forward in order to push the board down faster. I was struggling with my Papillon not to go into the down position after I clicked the dip so your guidance on how to avoid this pattern was SUPER HELPFUL! It's working! Bravo!
Thanks :) I sometimes get bummed that when I look at my old videos I could do them so much better... But I guess it means I keep growing and learning. I learned a lot this last year, that even though you wouldnt think sound and image quality plays a role in learning I think it does. I can barely watch my old videos or videos that are badly lighted.
Thank you! My dog was able to learn bow in only about 30 minutes! The only problem is he couldn’t figure out the difference between bow and lay down so he would do the wrong tricks but he eventually figured it out
Can't wait to try this. I've been trying to teach now but having some (border collie) problems with flopping into a down. I think rewarding the smaller movements at first will be useful.
good luck! You can also try asking for the bow in areas where you have not trained a down. if you trained a down in front of you, you can ask for the bow at your side instead to make it seem a little different.
This video is perfect. I love your position from beginning. Every video what i have seen was difficult for us. My erdel Stella understands this version much better.

Thank you for this! I ran into a problem! My dog always sits to take a treat so he won’t stop sitting down, even if I keep walking away to get him to come up!
I suggest teaching "get it" meaning he can have the treat, as well as you could also teach him the cue "touch" so he touches your hand. You can also practice luring him as you back up marking and putting treats down on the ground because he is anticipating to eat the treat off the ground and move forward you can mark when hes not sitting.
What a beautiful dog! It was actually a little bit distracting how pretty he is lol. Also his shoulders are so reflective it looks like he's glowing, I guess that's how he got the name Halo.
Such a great trick!!! Thanks for the tutorial. Can you PLEASE explain how you can train ONE dog at a time. I have two and it's VERY difficult for me. Thanks!!
Thank you so much! If my dog is offering every move she knows as I'm teaching her something, foes it mean she's not tired from playing or too tired to learn?
I suggest teaching 'wait for the cue' - th-cam.com/video/GBP0IDEN9EA/w-d-xo.html but this exercise of learning bow would be great because there is such a high rate of reinforcement that teh dog shouldnt have any opportunity to offer random behaviors at you.
Halo has certainly grown up. Isn't he full grown or nearing full grown. I also have my rough collie pup now which is sooner than I thought and she is learn "sit" fairly well and beginning to learn "leave it" as well. 😀
@@crywulf44 Even though I learned about them on TH-cam it is nothing like actually owning one. Except for maybe once, which I'm not sure about, she is close to 40 hours now accident free :D
My dog starts to back away when I lure or she thinks we’re doing a “leave it” exercise and she starts to ignore the treat lol how do I stop her from taking steps back. I think I can solve the looking away by using a better treat but she won’t lower after a point without jumping back
I’m started teaching my boxer Ajax “speak” and I tried getting him to bark while I held treats in my hand. He was reluctant to bark at all even though I was barking at him, I noticed when I would bark at him continuously he would bow down to play, so I went with it and taught him “bow” instead. I should have watched this first because he did confuse the word bow with down quite often.
I had taught my dog to do this but I called it “pray”. He did it fine for about a year then just suddenly stopped doing it and no matter how much I try to re train him he just won’t do it. Although, I taught him from the laying position and then lifting his butt. I’m wondering if that has anything to do with him not performing any more. Does it hurt his back maybe?
it could potentially be an issue w/ the legs or back, you could check with a Physical Therapist. You could also just see if you had your dog on the couch like I show in this video and lure the dog over the edge w a treat if the butt pops up into the bow easily it might just be that the trick needs more reinforcing and not so much about the trick itself being uncomfortable. But im with you its probably something
@@kikopup thanks for responding! I realized that he has been automatically doing this pose when we are getting ready to go outside. For this behavior I used Halo's tiny puppy kibbles because I gave so many so quickly I wanted them to be a healthy meal. But I also use real meat, tiny bits of cheese and hot dog.
