@Dogmum99 I agree, at least most of what you said! I personally, don't call myself a dog "trainer". I just say I work with dogs. Soon, I'll be working with dog who's owners say she's afraid of storms & needs socialization. The owners also don't walk their dog regularly. I'm just willing to help anyone. I've watched & learned from Cesar for the past 11yrs. I also am watching older episodes to help refresh my memory. To me, it never gets old!

Cesar, you are the best. I am a dog trainer in New Hampshire and I follow your methods as much as I can. Many of my clients call me a "dog whisperer". I always say I got it from studying you.
Very much agree with what you said at the beginning. Repetition Repetition Repetition... I typically don't use treats. I find what kind of reward the dog responds to. Sometimes it might be a toy or just a simple good job.
My dog is food motivated, so I use treats. She's 10 weeks old, walks perfectly on a leash, sits, down and stays and comes when I call her. She also will not touch her food until I say it's okay. She's a Saint Pyreenes so she'll be a big girl and it is imperative that she obeys without hesitation. She's amazing! If she were play motivated, I would use that for a reward.

An intelligent dog , i remember when i was teaching this to ma cane corso , he made it hell with his stubbornness 😂 the only problem i had with him for few months 😂
He started with positive reinforcement(keep going/ intermediate/ silent)and as he moved away he used a conditioned negative reinforcement(the tch sound). Still positive reinforcing(keep going/silent). Then ended with a big positive reinforcement (termination/ excited)
Cesar I just adopted a dog from the shelter I volunteer at and the dog is frightened and nervous. How do I correct the dog without freighting him more. Stay, sit, etc.? He is 3 years old and friendly but very nervous and fears commands even when calm commands.
How long have you had the dog? If you just adopted it last week. You need to give the dog time to acclimate to it's new home and develop a bond with you. Depending on what the dog has been through, and the dogs ability, this can take 1-3 months. Bonding should be your immediate goal. Keep training to a minimum during this time. And allow your dog to learn to trust and depend on you. In the meantime take it on walks and be happy. Your dog can sense how you feel. What breed is the dog? And does it know a structured walk on leash? That's where I'd start. But I'd really love to hear Cesar's take on this too. I do well, but Cesar is phenomenal, hehe. Hope this helps.
I adopted two frightened rescue dogs. I never needed to correct just redirect with praise for the alternate behavior. Even the "aggression" turned out to be fear aggression and needed desensitization. It depends on whats causing the unfavorable behavior
