    "You must not only hit a note, but you must hit the center of it. You cannot register any of your internal emotion at all. You cannot shake your head, for instance, or sway back and forth on your feet. That would change your tone." -Clara Rockmore

    Her experience as a violin player really shows through. It is interesting that she reportedly came from a family of people with perfect pitch. Her sense of space (horizontally pitch in her right hand, and vertically loudness in her left hand) must be exquisite.

    I learned about this woman many years ago thanks to many of these same videos that are still here on yt. She was a magnificent musician and played one of the most difficult instruments to play actual tunes on. Her theremin was given to her directly by it's inventor Leon Theremin who lived a very interesting life that's worth reading about. Probably most people with access to music, tv, and/or movies have heard a theremin at some point, but rarely has it been used with the same artistry of Clara Rockmore. It's nice to see Google's doodle bringing some recognition to this amazing musician.

      Actually Clara Rockmore is very highly regarded as a musical virtuoso. She worked with Loen Theramin closely to develop the Theramin. She then invented the technique to play it that is still taught today. Her later association with Robert Moog led to him developing a commercially available Theramin. His work with that instrument inspired him to push further and invent the musical synthesizer in the 1960's.

    • @cr4zyj4ck
      @cr4zyj4ck 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The Theremin is arguably the most difficult instrument on the planet to learn to play well instead of just making strange alien noises. There is nothing to give you any cue about where to place your hands other than pure muscle memory.

      @@richarddixon70 If you get a chance, scroll up a few msgs, and see her own words, not mine, about Tchaikovsky coming to see her play Theremin in US, and his request that she play Bach for him.
      She was indeed, and without doubt one of the finest musicians of any era.
      The only difference is that her preferred instrument was a more recent invention, yet that could not diminish neither her nor her magnificent musical abilities or her astounding and innate way of actually emoting on an completely "electronic" instrument.
      BTW, as a multi-instrumentalist who has TNTC instruments, including a Theremin, an old Fender Rhodes electric full case traveling electric piano, and one of the earliest Moog synthesizers that rolled off the production line, I'm right there with you on every word. 🤟🎼

      @@richarddixon70 I guess "underrated" in this context is supposed to mean "more famous among the general public". But yes, she was highly regarded, but "merely" by her own peers. Personally I think that might be the better kind of fame though - appreciated by people who know what they're talking about, and less hassle from everyone else!

      Or try the online Theremin by Femurdesign and try to replicate Clara Rockmore's wonderful performance.
      I can't even play the simplest of melodies with any accuracy (much less feeling) - like the Christmas carol 'Joy To The World' or 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star'. I'd probably get a Moog 'Theremini', which has pitch control that makes it much, much easier for new users to play specific notes with accuracy, plus normal Theremin options. Lydia Kavina has a good demonstration of what it can do and gives hope for new users at 6m05s --

    • @lparisl3889
      @lparisl3889 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +Hannah M Well,just to clarify,it creates sound because of the changes in the electromagnetic field when someone puts their hand next to the antennas.Due to the sensitiveness of the antennas,the change is notified and tranformed into microwaves that indentify as sound.

    Sun., Jan 10 2015 3:43 pm EST - The beauty of Clara Rockmore's conceptualization and performance is beyond words to describe. No violin can compete with the capacity of the theremin, conducted by her virtuosic hands, to embody the composer's most ethereal impression of this magnificent melody.
