The next big flying adventure awaits, but first...

- With my plane about to go in for an instrument panel upgrade, I decided to go up for one last flight with my old panel. I also took the chance to review a headset I just bought from Avcomm as a backup, and to practice some maneuvers that’ll be important for a big flight in late July.
I did it for the first time last year and I too was “a little” apprehensive. I prepared as much as I could just like you are doing. Last year the FAA had a webinar that was put on by the controllers who actually work the event and we had a chance to ask questions. My biggest take away from the whole experience was to read the notam and understand it. It’s size is intimidating but not all pertains to you and your plane so it becomes much more digestible. During the webinar, they made it clear that the color dot is where they assign you to land but it’s not a requirement to hit the dot. We were give runway 18 and cleared to land “at or beyond pink dot”. They also stress that going around is an option if you don’t feel you are stable. I did see many go around as a spectator. My wife and I wanted to return this year but unfortunately we had a conflicting event during the same week. Hope you have a great time!
Thanks Manuel, that’s really helpful to hear about your experience. I heard the EAA webinar this year is on June 14 so I’ll definitely sign up for that. I should look up to see when the FAA one is, too.
Take a couple of vented golf umbrellas to KOSH. Be prepared for anything to happen in the air or on ground. It's a great feeling when you hear the controller say "Welcome to Oshkosh".
Thanks Don. “Welcome to OshKosh” and “Good Rock!” If I get to hear both those things, I’ll consider my trip a success. 😀
I appreciate your videos. When you said you were shooting for 90 knots, I suspected OSH. One of my bucket list items is to hear "Good Rock" through my headset on FISK approach.
Same here! That and “welcome to OshKosh”, and I’ll consider my trip a success.
Excited to see the new panel when it’s all done! Great video on the kinds of things we pilots do in preparation for something like a trip OSH. One thing you might try, although it’s a bit tough on the engine, is the Power-off 180 (P180) maneuver for the CPL. Pick your spot to land on downwind and pull throttle to idle the objective is to land on the spot you chose. The CPL standards are -50’, +200 I think. That’s pretty accurate landing…
Thanks Richard. That’s a great idea, I’ll definitely practice that when I have my plane back! Cheers.
Do those visors feel nice and tight and not wobbly? As sturdy or more than the original OEM?
Very sturdy. Well built, you can adjust how much pressure is needed to move and slide them. Best few hundred I’ve spent on the plane. Other than fuel. 😀
I am based out of CYOO as well and still a student pilot after flying 80 hrs in last 2 yrs. Would love to connect if possible.
