Come along with me for flying adventures and lessons in my Beechcraft Sierra.
I'm a private pilot with a new instrument rating, flying for fun around our home base in Toronto and further afield in our 1977 Beechcraft Sierra. My videos go beyond sharing flying footage, and I try to add insights and information that others will find interesting. I use these videos to solidify my learnings for myself as I become more proficient as a pilot, and to hopefully entertain and inform others along the way.

Flying VFR from Cincinnati to the Music City
This is the second leg of our flights down to Nashville and New Orleans for a week of vacation. After clearing customs in Cincinnati, we made a 2 hour VFR flight to Nashville's John Tune airport, getting vectored around and then right over Nashville International Airport. Join us for the beautiful view of the city and the airport, and some of the great music we got to hear there.

Flying my Beechcraft Sierra to Cincinnati on the way to Nashville
มุมมอง 1.8Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Earlier this year, M and I decided to fly down to Nashville and New Orleans for a bit of a vacation and adventure. In the first leg, we flew southwest, dodging clouds and icing, to Cincinnati to clear customs on the way to Nashville. It's always great to take off surrounded by snow and ice, and land in a place that's warm and sunny. Join us for the first leg of our week-long adventure. Interest...

What does it take to fly your private plane across the border between Canada and the US? As I’m preparing for a flight to Nashville and New Orleans next week, I thought I’d talk through the process in both directions. A few people have reached out to me to ask about the process, and although it may seem a bit daunting the first time, there are 5 pretty straightforward steps you can follow, whet...

2023 was a fun but slightly slower flying year for me. I got in a handful of good sized flights, including a bucket list trip. But what's in store for me in 2024 in terms of flying? It's up in the air, and I'm open to suggestions. Join me as I recap 2023 and talk a bit about what I have in mind for the coming year. All I know is, it'll be fun, and I hope I get to meet more of you along the way!...
Flying home VFR from Windsor after a busted brake issue

Before I could fly the final leg home from Nashville, I discovered an issue with my brakes while I was getting ready to depart Windsor. Thankfully the good folks at WCS Aviation there were able to patch me up so I could make the final flight to get home. Dreamy IFR flight skimming the cloud tops from Nashville to Windsor

After a night in Nashville for some meetings, I flew from there to Windsor, Ontario, again in IMC almost the entire way. I’m finding I actually really like flying in IMC - it’s like being in a sensory deprivation room. Along the way, though, I made a few small mistakes that showed me that I still have a way to go before my new gear is completely intuitive for me. Thankfully, none of it was majo...
Nashville trip: flying in IMC to Nashville Int'l in my Beechcraft Sierra

Back in mid-October, I flew down to Nashville for some meetings, stopping in Windsor on the way back for another breakfast meeting. What happens to a Cessna under the sea? Scuba diving a plane crash site.

This short one is a bit of a departure from my usual flying videos, but one I think might be interesting for aviation viewers. On a diving vacation in Curacao, we dove the site of a crashed Cessna 172 from 1994. I am always amazed at the level of ATC service in the USA. Something we can only dream of in EASA land.
Great video! I've been considering crossing the border into Canada next summer for some time. Thanks
just found the channel. Excellent video! Subscribed.
Thanks very much!
Great video, helped me cross over both ways for my trip recently, fairly easy, now i wait for my bill
Awesome, I’m glad it was useful! The Canadian bill shouldn’t be more than about $35 CAD or about $25 USD I think.
Where did you travel to in Canada?
YQB, choose to clear into the US near the border for reasons you mentioned!
thanks for the preview; it's still on my list.
Corwin Overpass
Huh?
Great flight and video! Keep them coming.
Thanks! And thanks for watching.
How did you like that wind and wind shear off the mountains to the west. Busy little airport. Was kid rocks jet there on the ramp?
I'd forgotten about that jet - yes, I think it was his. That wind and shear was nothing compared to what I had flying back from New Orleans and landing in Virginia! :)
@@WingsOverTO we flew the Sierra over time building for a 24 hour turn around. Nice airport close enough to town.
Very informative
Glad you liked it!
Good to see someone flying their Sierra. Mine just got done with annual and they dropped a nuke on me that my crankshaft has to be replaced due to an AD that was not complied with 12 years ago!!!! I called someone else and they confirmed it was supposed to be done years ago when they went through the papers and there was no way around it. I'm looking at almost a rebuild price they are saying. I told them I'm broke, I don't even know how to afford that sorta money atm. Keep on flying buddy!
Oh man that’s terrible. I’m so sorry to hear that! I’d be so angry about that; I can imagine how you’re feeling.
12 yrs! almost makes you wonder about a statute of limitations. 😆
Congrats on 400. And great video
Thanks!
Congrats on 400 hrs. You have accomplished alot in that time. Being from Montreal I am a Habs fan too. Detroit is another good place to catch them as well as Buffalo.
Thanks Reale! Yeah Buffalo and Detroit are definitely good options, as is Boston. I might need to look into their schedule this year and plan a trip. Although they’re going to suck this year too, so maybe I’ll wait…
Not a country music fan either... but Nashville offers so much more. Also a cheap place to fly to and see the Leafs.
Oh nice. I should do that when the Habs are in town!
❤
Any thoughts/comparisons of the experience clearing customs there vs Port Clinton? Anything favouring one over the other (beyond timing in a trip)?
I’d say it depends on whether you’re planning to stop for lunch. Both FBOs have a courtesy car, but Lunken has many more restaurant options nearby. Port Clinton just had a few diners. Both are nice airports, not too busy, with reasonably priced fuel.
I had 0 experience in actual when I got my rating. My first approach in IMC was down to the DA of an ILS approach. It was scary. I had to go missed and then shoot the approach the second time. I did not do this alone. I had another pilot with me.
Oh wow! Hopefully you had a good autopilot, too.
I enjoy your videos. Lots of information. Thank you.
Glad you like them!
really well done. Good job.
Thank you! Cheers!
Super! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Love the flight! Great! I love the ADM and constant adjusting of the flight to manage risk! Getting an instrument rating really helps to reduce the stress of clouds ahead as long as icing is not a factor in a light aircraft. I would have filed an instrument plan and planned the RNAV/ILS into KLUK with a divert farther west.
Thanks very much. Interesting. I hadn’t thought of diverting further west. IFR wasn’t an option when I departed from Toronto but became an option as I got close to Cincinnati. But it didn’t occur to me to do a split flight plan VFR-IFR. I’ll have to keep that in mind. Thanks for watching.
@@WingsOverTO interesting; do they not allow for an IFR international departure for GA? I’ve only ever flown biz jets in or out of Canada.
@@amamdawhatever oh no they do, and I’ve done that before. But my plane is not rated for FIKI and icing was a problem that day. IFR altitudes would have required me to go through the clouds - not an option, unfortunately.
@@WingsOverTO Ah makes sense!
Kam - I find it interesting that with your IR you chose to bounce along with your wife at 3k, instead of filing and flying like 8 or 10k where it had to be a lot smoother -- looked like the tops weren't an issue and you'd have a more pleasant ride for the wife? Anyway, she seems a trooper -- I'd'a might'a decided that Cincinnati was far enough for the day after that myself!! hahahahaha --
Hey Dan. It was the icing that was an issue. The icing level was about 1000’ AGL in Ontario that day, and there was icing reported all around, so I couldn’t punch through the clouds and get above. I thought about getting up higher as we went south but the temperature just wasn’t warming up much until we got pretty close to Cinci, if I’m remembering right. But yeah, M is a trooper. 😀 Thanks for watching, Dan.
Oh and one thing I was worried about was clouds were reported as scattered and broken for most of the route that morning, so even if I could get up top, getting back down through them might have become an issue.
Well now, uploading one with all that white stuff in it is a nice depressing way to end August. 😉. Still, like watching this.
lol yeah, we did that flight in late March, and I’d forgotten how much snow there was at the time.
Really enjoy your wife riding along
Thanks your comment made her smile.
Looking forward to the rest of the trip. That was a constant bumpy ride...yikes hard on the back. ;)
Yeah, that was not pleasant. Wait til you see the first leg home from New Orleans! :) Thanks for watching, Gary.
Cool video! Looking forward for the next one
Thanks! I'm hoping it'll just be a couple of weeks for the next one.
Excellent planning as always. Did you consider filing IFR on this trip?
Thanks, Reale. I chose not to fly IFR because of icing. I would have had to be up in the clouds, and the temps that day were just above freezing at ground level. Unfortunately, the instrument rating isn't a cure-all. :)
I worked at KTEB Sig, miss it like crazy. 95% are jets and it's an insane area. ATC in KTEB, KJFK, KLGA, KEWR working together in one of the most busiest area in the country, you can see why they are the best.
Nice. Yeah, they really are phenomenal. Thanks for watching!
Flight sim, only way to get it back affordably.
I’m glad your back. I missed your vids in that nice sierra. 😉
Thanks 👍
Good to see you flying again!
Thanks, Glen. Really enjoying your Give Hope Wings videos.
Always good to see your content. I'm in the same boat but I'm current. I always say currency goes in the log book, proficiency saves your bacon. ☺ Shedding the rust and keeping the buttonology fresh is always a workout. Good luck in flying and the new career. 👍
Thanks, Gary! Good to hear from you.
I have been wondering where you have been, good to see you at it again.
Thanks! And thanks for watching.
If you have a flight sim, you can stay proficient, but maybe not current, by using Pilot Edge and flying the I-Rating flights. Oh, very nice Beechcraft Sierra panel!
Thanks! Yeah I need to dig my old flight sim gear out and set it up again. Thanks for watching!
Wishing you all the best in your new endeavor. Take care and good to see you back.
Thank you very much!
Good to see you back!
Thanks! Felt good to be back at the computer editing a video. :)

lol thanks! All good here, hope you are too.
Really great real-world video. Thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it!
Man that’s frustrating. I had some slow movers in front of me last year. We got down to 73 knots at one point because of the guy in front of us.
Amazing to see your adventure as I take plunge towards starting my PPL journey & eventually buy my own Cessna, :)
Oh nice, good luck with the PPL! Thanks for watching.
nice job with the Radio comms man!
Thanks very much!
why was the bottle of scotch half empty? have you been practicing ditching at sea? Excellent video!
lol. That scene took a LOT of takes and I had to keep wetting my whistle 😀
Great video! I’m flying to KTEB Saturday morning for the first time. Cheers!
Thanks for watching. Good luck with the flight to Teterboro! It’s not as bad as you’re probably thinking. 😀
Good job on the approach briefing! I feel like a lot of times it’s easy just rush through them, but you were super thorough :)
Thanks, Andrew! I hope I'm as thorough with the briefing a few years from now as I am today.
Yeah personally I like to have Jepp charts since I’m the USA but I dont know if they have them for Canada or not looks like it was just gov charts you had
@@andrewseneker7515 yes I use Nav Canada charts. They’re different than the FAA’s charts and I quite like them. To be fair, I’ve never tried using the Jepp charts but I have taken a look at one or two and didn’t see a big difference against the Canadian ones. At least not enough to make the cost worth it for me.
Awesome content, love the music!
Thank you! You’re the first person to say they like the music, all other mentions of it are more like “music is not necessary”. Lol
Large synthetic vision helps a lot. should really be a legal requirement.
I agree it would help. But making it a legal requirement would price probably 2/3 of private GA pilots out of aviation.
@@WingsOverTO They should arrange for an avionics producer to have an inexpensive option so it's not a 60k$ operation. Garmin offers it's G3x for 3k. They might cost 400$ to make. It's possible
What a lovely video, I really enjoyed it! My wife and I drove from the "other Trenton" (NJ) to Lake Erie and onto Cleveland, where we caught a breathtaking view of the eclipse.
Thanks very much! Your eclipse experience sounds like it was really nice as well. Cheers.
Great videos. Im considering a Sierra, how does it handle crosswind landings? I fly out of KDDC and the winds seem to always be 18-25 on average.
Thanks very much, I appreciate you reaching out. It's actually pretty good for crosswind landings. It's a heavier plane than a C172 or something like a Piper Archer or Arrow, so it is more stable and resists the crosswinds a bit better. If the winds are routinely 18-25 and mostly crosswind, you'll certainly get good at it! :) I max out at 25kt winds with a 15kt crosswind component - absolute max for me and only if it's a must - but the plane is rated for a 17kt crosswind.
@@WingsOverTO thanks for the info! I appreciate it!
Great video!
Thanks!
