For me, the best things about living in Houston are: 1. No state income tax like Illinois. 2. No repressive gun laws like Illinois and Chicago. 3 Traffic congestion not as bad as Chicago. 4 People friendlier than Chicago. 5. Weather is much better than Chicago. For me, the worst thing about living in Houston is that the property taxes are just as high as Chicago.
Valid points. Definitely understand the tax rate concern. In California I was paying about 2%, but that was on a house that cost almost triple what my house here cost lol. I’m at about 2.5% here in Kingwood. So my property taxes dropped significantly after moving here. Texas also has what’s called a Homestead Exemption. It is for your primary residence and can lower your annual county appraisal by up to 20%, which is a pretty nice savings!
