I do hope she’ll keep her spunky and not “just a tomboy”, she WAS the best player and she was aware she looked good and she made a point not to let anyone downplay her skills or underestimate her, aka “Don’t call me doll”. Honestly her character wasn’t very deep but she was still fun, even if most of her appeal comes from her looks. She did honestly have a personality but it just wasn’t as explored as it could have been. What I got from her character was an attractive character who’s looks stood out more than what she was or what she could do, but a spitfire and a secretly very goofy cartoon who had a skill that pretty much saved her friends. I hope they expand on that, the cool and collective but secretly goofy character trope is probably one of my favorites.

Honestly dude! I really love her character but I don’t get why she has to be a sexy rabbit. And even more so I don’t get why it’s such a big deal when the biggest change is her clothing. That and the style of art which was bound to happen because Looney Toons art style has changed multiple times over the years. She doesn’t need to be sexy to be a good character

Or we could have straight male movie directors not jerk off the also totally straight male audience while we're all trying to watch a movie about freakin' alien cartoon basketball.
Can we have female characters who don't have to be "cool"(and sexy) and "so competent" (and sexy) "and responsible"(and sexy) and have traits that are not attractive in any way? Can we have female characters be flawed and stupid and crazy and filthy and loud and ugly and have it be okay the same way it's okay for all the male characters? Like, can female characters be caricatures of some other concept than "wank fodder" and "wank fodder that also does this thing on the side amazingly well to overcompensate for being wank fodder"?

I loved Lola when I was a kid. I didn't even realize she was "sexy" I was just happy to see a girl being allowed to play with the boys.
She was tough, skilled and didn't let people talk down to her. I remember that "don't call me doll" scene WAY different than it apparently was. I haven't seen the movie since then, so I'm sure my memory is wrong. But as a little girl I got the "girl power" aspect and didn't really notice the rest.

He said he wanted to make the character more of a strong character which is great but how does decreasing the size of her breasts that weren’t that over the top in the first place make her a stronger character? They should have instead kept something a bit more like the original and just changed up her clothing and writing.

He said he wanted to make her design "stronger," because its generic PR speak. Warner Brothers didn't want to say "Her old designed was oversexualized in a sort of gross way and in the 90s nobody cared but now a lot of people would be less cool with it," so they used a boilerplate adjective to try to minimize the controversy. It failed, but that was inevitable given how certain people literally make their entire living getting angry about changes in society now.

@@tridenttitan5329 I don't really think its reasonable to classify the design as "more athletic than sexy," when they went out of their way to give her a bare midriff and ultra-short-shorts that show off her long slender legs, which is nothing like what the WNBA players were wearing in the 90s. I don't object to them having made her sexy at the time, the intent behind it was pretty clearly not malicious and it was entirely in-line with how media tended to portray empowered women at the time. Very rooted in 2nd Wave Feminism and the Sexual Revolution circa the 70s (although arguably mainly from a male perspective). But lets be honest about what was going on there. There's nothing wrong with being critical of outcomes even when intentions are good, especially because even the writers own notes make it clear they were making this character mainly to be Bugs' girlfriend, not just to have an attractive, athletic, empowered lady among the Looney Tunes cast for the sake of having her.

My opinion: if Lola isn't sexualized and has a more developed personality, the design doesn't matter
Edit: I meant that the design shouldn't define her character in that way. Just because she is sexy doesn't mean she *has* to be the sexualized bunny that she was in the first movie. And the design shouldn't be totally de-sexualizezed Just so she can have a different personality. I know that visuals are important in design, specially its correlation to the character's personality.

Plenty of the people who are objectifying and putting her down over her looks are the ones who are the ones complaining about her original design.
And your argument is like saying that a good character that's supposed to seem evil having an evil design doesn't compliment them because you'd like them to be more heroic. No, you just have a bias against characters that look like that thus falling for the guise.
That not bad character design, that's giving their design a deeper message.
So personally I'd say they did an AMAZING job designing her given how that's all anyone ever does is reduce her character to her looks despite her other talents.
Because again the point IS that people boil her down to her looks despite her skills and personality, because people tend to objectify women.
So much in fact that people think sexy women are just props and only "less sexually attractive" women can have personalities. Hence "less sexy lola means better personality because I find her boobs distracting" being the main argument against her.
So yeah, main issue here is actually just sexism. Women being talented doesn't inherently clash with them be attractive.

I think she’ll be a mix of Space Jam Lola in that she’ll still be competitive and into basketball but that she’ll also have moments of having a smartass and loony personality similar to Bugs. Just a guess. EDIT: Also, the director changed the design to make her more strong, independent and capable and while Looney Tunes Show Lola is the GOAT, I don’t think they’d choose her personality if they were very invested in those qualities.

I was only upset by the change because of the way it was handled. The creators didn’t want Lola to be sexualized. So, that implies that curves = sexualization? Sexualization ISN’T solely based on body shape! Clothing, poses, and facial expressions also are taken into account.
It’s like the conundrum of “girls get molested when they wear skimpy clothing”, which is absolutely wrong.
Rather than changing her purely because of sexualization, change her because you want to focus on her as a character. I’m fine with her not having a chest, but 100% don’t make it about the sexualization. Make the change so you can focus on her character, not her body.

As a young girl, what I liked about original Lola was her confidence and the skills to back it up. When I was young I felt nervous about having female attention or standing out because it would lead to said female attention and it felt like it was my fault or sometimes everything being out of control. But here's this character who doesn't mind being feminine and can keep up with the boys and not care about the attention brought on to her or her appearance, she still did what she wanted to do and wear what she wanted to wear without breaking a sweat. I'm still nervous to this day expressing my body, ashamed even but characters like her helped me to find my own style and confidence. So while I don't think the redesign is bad, her lack of expression with her clothes and posture makes me worried for her character's personality in the future movie and I am also sad in general that people just consider her a sexy character when she was so inspiring for little me. I just think she was a pretty positive character for insecure girls, or at least like me, can't speak for anyone but myself honestly.

Agree, I'm a female and I'm tired of this new trend of butchering the female traits of characters, they are basically saying "if you have a curvy body you can't be strong and independent" , so now the designs go in two ways they are like a 12 year old boys or have severe masculine traits this is very obvious in the last couple of years in comic book, the best example is the re-design of She-Hulk the original design is like a female body builder wit curves , but now in her 2021 version they took ALL her femenine side, to make her look like a 100% testosterone giant like Goro from Mortal Kombat but wit only two arms and green skin, so what they are saying is that "feminine traits are weak, you must have a steroid filled masculine body to compete wit men"

We can just imagine that now she’s wearing a sports bra, while in the first movie she was wearing a push-up bra.
I like the change in the uniform. As a female that loves high-waisted shorts and crop tops and that have already played in a basketball team I can assure you that I would NOT have chosen those pieces to play basketball. We just wear regular uniforms.
The only thing that bothers me is that it seems like she’s... shorter? Maybe it’s the new clothes giving an illusion (which is normal). If she’s +- the same height as Bugs, I’m fine. It’s still the same character, but with a proper uniform and sports bra. (They hide curves, but that doesn’t mean they are not there).

That being said, rabbits don’t have boobs. I like both designs anyway.

I liked Lola's character design from the original Space Jam, but DEAR GOD did I hate her actual character, even as a lad of 11 which is what I was in 1996. I didn't know the right term back then, but I recognize it as CRINGE now. Lola was a perfect example of what you'd call "men writing women," I think they were going for some kind of empowered female thing, like how she hates it when people objectify her and wants to be recognized for her actual skill and ability...except her every line and action is totally seductive, she's a shameless tease. It's kind of like they wanted to put Minerva Mink into the movie without actually putting Minerva Mink in the movie. It makes her come across as shameless and hypocritical and even THEN her major arc is coming out as Bugs' girlfriend, so she has no real agency or character of her own aside from the man she's with.
I LOVED her in the Looney Toons show though, she was frikking hilarious and I laughed out loud at almost every scene she was in, on another note they also introduced Daffy's girlfriend Tina in that show who was almost her total opposite yet every bit as funny, I still think fondly about that cartoon after all this time. This made me think about other female characters in WB canon, and aside from one shots I could only think of Granny and Broomhilda, MAYBE Red Hot Riding Hood since she was in 2 shorts instead of just one. OF course the 90's gave us a bunch of new ones like Babs, Sherly, Fifi and a couple others from Tiny Toons and Dot, Hello Nurse, Slappy Squirrel and Minerva Mink from animaniacs, but they never crossed over outside of their own franchise like the other Looney Toons characters do.

I don’t think your giving OG Lola enough credit. Like Jessica Rabbit, her looks are meant to contrast her character. She’s pretty, and that sets up the expectation that she’s just gonna be the hot but vapid member of the group who only gets added to the team because she’s attactive. But she is also capable, more so than any of the other tunes in the movie, she has the skills to be on the team and also doesn’t like it when people see her as just a pretty face. I can’t speak for everyone else’s reasons for liking her, and Lola isn’t super deep nor is she central to the movie, but there is intent behind her design and character beyond just being the hot one.

@@Gingersnaps_the_pumpkin_kitty in a visual media, what is shown usually sticks more than what is said. People can say as much as they want that Lola had some personality, but they remember what they saw, which was a sexy bunny.
It is the same thing mentioned in the video from Lindsay Elis about Megan Fox’ character in transformers. She might have been a deeper character than the MC and complain how people desconsidere her knowledge on a mostly masculine field and view her as an object, while at the same time the camera is ogling at her curves when she is looking at the car. People do not remember her comment or the critique underneath it, they only remeber what the camera showed them: that yes, she is a sexy object and that is her only worth.

She can be the "hot girl" but still be the intimidating, not to be underestimated player. It upsets me more that she was redesigned in the sequel to the one with the original design. The designs in other shows don't have this problem because it is its own show with its own versions of characters, they aren't necessarily the same person as the other versions of themselves. She can be smart, hot, a good basketball player, and hate being looked down on at the same time is what I'm getting at.

  • @soulechelon2643
    @soulechelon2643 3 ปีที่แล้ว +37

While I easily see your point of view and agree with alot of it in this vid, there's a little more nuance to the backlash of her change. On the surface you see people angry purely because the attractiveness is gone. But that's not everyone. For me and quite a few others, it's the reasoning behind the change, and I wish you would've pointed that out.
They said that they wanted Lola to be a "strong" character, and that having her attractive would take away from this. That's the main problem here. Recently this sort of reasoning has been growing more and more abundant in Western media; especially in comic books. Characters like Wonder Woman, She-Hulk, or Starfire - all incredibly powerful yet attractive women - have been either heavily sidelined or transformed into less appealing versions of themselves for no apparent reason. Lola, while being clearly eye candy, was also part of that "powerful yet attractive" circle. You're totally correct in that they didn't give her enough personality; or more times to show off said personality. But what they did give was enough for many of us to look up to her as a role model. Her first act was to quite literally establish dominance over Bugs, who belittled her because she was attractive. That spoke to many of us; even as children. This cute, attractive female bunny easily beating the "star of Looney Toons" in a one-on-one? This girl destroying this guy who just belittled her in basketball - a typically very male sport? This sportsball-playing woman even impressing Michael freakin' Jordan? Instantly, that made her my favorite character, and it had little to do with her attractiveness.
"So why does the redesign bother you?" Because of what I stated earlier - the reason behind it. Why is it that nowadays being attractive suddenly means you can't be strong? Look at Jessica Rabbit, for instance. Ultra attractive character but has tons of personality and is heavily pivotal to the movie she was in. Do you really, truly think she could exist in this day and age the same exact way as she was back then? No; at least not in the mainstream media. Twitter would explode. Literally explode. If she were to come back, she'd be heavily redrawn and dumbed down because nowadays, being "attractive" means you're weak-willed and a bimbo in the Western world. That's what we're told every single time a once attractive character with a strong will gets watered down, and Lola is just the most recent.
It all feels like pandering to people who wouldn't watch the movie in the first place... Also, I should add: The removal of Pepe Le Pew from the movie. If that's not pandering, I don't know what is. However that's a whole other Pandora's Box that I won't be opening here.
As for her television series version - I actually adore that version of Lola myself too. Her personality fits "Looney Toons" perfectly. But my goodness, even that version allowed her to have at least some feminine attractiveness, while this new Space Jam version has removed all of it. Which brings me to the next reason behind my personal annoyance...
The redesign itself...is not good. It's not even that she isn't "attractive". It's just not good at all. Remember how you pointed out the initial versions of Lola looked too much like Bugs and so they had to redesign her? Welp, now she looks exactly like a female Bugs Bunny only with Slappy the Squirrel's (from Animaniacs) face. This wasn't an update in design. This was a downgrade in every way.
Anyways that's my thoughts on it, and I'm personally done arguing about it so this'll probably be my final post on the matter. If you actually read all of this, thank you for taking your time in doing so. At the end of the day this is just my opinion and my thoughts on the subject. If yours is different, then that's your prerogative.

Who cares how she looks, as long as they keep her personality intact.

I would understand the redesign if the reason for it was that her sex appeal in the original film was the extent of her personality, but it wasn't. Her "sexiness" was only really played up in her introduction, and she instantly showed everyone she was far more than an hourglass figure. And hell, the one from the Looney Tunes show was insanely popular despite having a less sexualized design. The reason was that the design there was done to keep consistent with the style of the show and not for the stupid reasons this movie's director dictate, which carry the astoundingly idiotic idea that a sexy woman cannot be a strong character.
And if the problem is that you think people are going to be too distracted by the sexy to appreciate your character, that says more about your abilities as a character writer than about the audience. Also, this is not going to stop people from sexualizing the character on their own. If people will sexualize ponies that aren't even shaped like human beings, there's no saving Lola, no matter how flat you make her.

exactly, I always saw lola as a fem fatal type kinda like faye from cowboy bebop, beautiful yet very capable of holding her own. plus just in general I thought her old design was just more appealing, in the new one it's ok they took away her boobs but did they have to take away her knees to? Now her legs look like sausages and it's just weird to look at.

Big time. Hell, there'll probably be art of old-design lola growing a little something extra down below and railing new-design lola with it.
