So that last episode is like when you’re writing a paper in middle school. You have a great hook, your body paragraphs are amazing... but then you realize that you have 5 minutes left until you have to hand it in, so the closing statement is just “So in conclusion this is why this happens.”
True, but at the end of the day, they're just a student that tried their best to finish an assignment that had a time limit. That can't be the same for SU. They're adults that get paid to do a good job in writing a good story, but they didn't do that right. This was supposed to be a TEAM of writers. They had so much time to write a good story and took even more time with all their hiatuses.
@@mrvespuccia.k.ameganite1747 They did that in Steven Universe Future, but they did that essay to late. That’s something he and the audience should’ve experienced when he was still 14
They did the same asspull in Last Airbender. God forbid characters are forced to violate their morals in order to accomplish their goals.

Peridot: A single home world gem gets an entire redemption arc White diamond: the actual end game character. Appears in 2 episodes and gets redeemed because Steven pulled an UNO reverse card.
Honestly. I would have prefer peridot to not have any redemption arc at all. She was such an awesome character before they decided to turn her into a cringy, forgetable, ridiculous, annoying midget.
“fusion should’ve come from an emotional breakthrough in their relationship” gets me thinking of what steven and pearls fusion could’ve been. like the moment she no longer sees him as rose or whatever would’ve been big emotional catharsis
I know! There were so many good episodes where they could've started this development. Steven and Pearl had so many moments in the show that could've built their relationship to the point where they could've fused before the finale. Better yet, they could've waited for suf with that episode with Volleyball to make a pivotal point in their relationship and for them to fuse. But no, they had to throw it in😫
I can even tell you the exact moment it should have happened. In future, when they were playing Steven tag. Pearl used shape shifting for the first time since Rose. And the whole point of the episode is that Steven is growing up and isn't just a child anymore, while pearl learned to let get past her trauma. Pearl the smart, responsible gem that she is, would totally respect him for his maturing growth and shape shifted into his current form. Now add a big proud of you emotional, appreciating hug and BAM! 2.0 is born. And while you're at it, you even have an excuse for a second sugilite battle, but this time showing that sugilite is also in control, because Amethyst has also grown. And it's still Steven tag.
Imagine the message this sent to kids. Imagine telling kids that the way to stand up to your bully is to just beg them to stop. Imagine teaching kids that they have to be friends with everyone otherwise they're not a good person. Bully: *pushes kid over* Kid : "bully no bullying" Bully: *snaps fingers* "aww man guess is have to stop"
I’m mentally young due to a developmental disability and Steven Universe is my favorite show, so reading this comment gave me a sinking feeling because I’m notorious for putting everyone else before myself, even bullies. One time, I even tried to make peace with a Nazi who I encountered online, and, when my mom asked why I would even talk to a Nazi, my reasoning was that, if Steven could redeem anyone, so could I. Just last night, I had an anxiety attack because someone was cyberbullying me, and my mom kept telling me to defend myself, even encouraging me to use swears, but I didn’t want to fight back in fear of escalating the situation. I really hate any sort of conflict, so, even if someone’s being mean to me, I usually just try to wait it out.
@@go-go-rilla4405 if you followed this shows logic you should just go up to Kim Jong-un and tell him he's a smelly meany and he should stop being a dictator. If you want to try that be my guest but that's a one way ticket into a gulag.
Imagine telling Hitler’s top generals, “Hey, Nazi’s suck”, the general suddenly becomes a hippie, and Hitler becomes German Bob Ross. That’s the Diamond/Steven conflict in a nutshell
It's funny because Blue's and Yellow's redemption arc was literally the same excuses nazis used during the Nuremberg trials, "oh we didn't really want to do it we were only following orders from our higher ups" Except in real life Hitler had already killed himself so there was no way they'd have punish him but here White Diamond is alive and well so just freaking shatter her already
thats far away from what happend. Steven literally made them realize what they were doing as in the blue one, he reminded her that shes only doing the same thing that she did before and made her believe that is why pink left. In the yellow diamond one she realized that making her empire perfect isnt a good thing to do. Then we find out that they both were afraid of white diamond all along and thats why they were acting that way, the white diamond one was bad but the reason that it was so easy was because she got proved that pink diamond isnt there and hes her son or i really cant explain the white diamond one but the thing is that they were approving the fusion inside the gem as shown in pearls gem that there was a pearl there.
Shea Bolton it’s a terrible plot twist. And we can’t say it’s in character for here since we know virtually nothing about her. All we know is that she orchestrated genocide across entire planets and she’s all of a sudden forgiven. Stupid (not calling you stupid btw)
Shea Bolton so we don’t pursue justice for literal victims of genocide because of the threat of death? isn’t blue and yellow only a bit below her in terms of power and we just let a genocidal maniac loose what’s the odds she just goes back to her old ways in like a year or two and surprise murders everyone from that crap argument Steven made
I think the story would have been better if the diamonds hadn’t been space nazis. Then the story is just about family conflict which is what they seemed to be going for and it makes sense why they could forgive them
No that was fine. The problem is that they let the space nazis just be family. The Empire has committed how many atrocities, actual genocides, but hey, Steven used to be pink, that changes everything except it doesn’t.
Not to mention, it's too late by that point. They've done way too much set-up by that stage of the story. It would have necessitated a total reimagining of the entire show to eliminate Space Nazism from the Gempire.
@@langustajableczna because I don't have the time? Why can't you give me an answer instead of insulting me? What you're doing is much more lazy than me just asking a question, tbh. Cringe 🤮
White Diamond's entrance was so cool, her voice, her calmness, the way she just talks over Steven. And then Change your mind decided she's not it anymore
Exactly. The diamonds are practically war criminals, killing thousands of life forms across the universe to expand their empire. They should’ve shattered the diamonds honestly. Blue diamond and yellow diamonds redemptions I can see happening overtime, but not white diamond. She’s to self centred and psychopathic to just suddenly change her mind.
Very cool character design. There’s just something inherently frightening about her, it’s uncanny. The closest thing I have to compare it to is “have you seen this man in your dreams?”
On the topic of Change Your Mind, can we mention how poorly they handled Lars? Like the only reason he returned was so they could say "LOOK! HE'S BACK!" and then did nothing more with him, except send him back to space in Future. There was so much chance to use the fact him and Lion were now the same to answer mysteries around Lion, or even around how the power could affect someone, but they just never even tried to make it meaningful
lars' character disappointed me SO much. They literally just killed him off so they wouldn't have to deal with him anymore. He literally just died an suddenly he is this whole new guy who gets to express his feelings and be himself :/
@jaybay5538 Lesbianism? M'lord, that's not even a word. The show was well made and thought out, as this video points out. They just cocked up the finale so badly that it kind of overshadowed the rest of the show. What could you possibly mean by "pushing lesbianism"?
A villain who is pure evil , they don’t care , all want is chaos and destruction. Steven only has one choice , to shatter them or they’ll just destroy everything he cares about.
Peridot's redemption arc was the only real redemption arc as opposed to redemption episodes. It _was_ pretty great though. I can see why she's a fan favorite.
and Jasper never got a redemption arc despite being the first villain Steven faced and Bismuth was bubbled and told to fck off because she was threatening Rose's plan to live out her dream of staying on earth and banging humans
Since the Diamonds decided how the empire should be, they should have explained why they want the empire to be this way, break down their motives and GIVE THEM A FUCKING BACKSTORY OH MY GOD
@@salahabdalla368 Yeah, awkwardly enough, the "mon" in "monarchy" actually means something, I guess they would constitute a "Tetrarchy" or "Triarchy" after Pink Diamond's apparent death
I really like the show’s ending despite the clear flaws but god IF CN JUST GAVE IT TIME It would have probably been the best ending for the show if it actually got some time, but it had about three episodes of buildup, two of wich were for setup and lasted only 11 minutes At least TOW got three parts equally shared in screentime to build up to an ending, two hours to get to know everything and actually build up to a conclusion, while this gem of a show got 20 minutes of setup before going “ok, did you do all you needed to do for the ending? Don’t care” and force feeding a 45 minute climax that wasn’t enough to wrap up all the loose ends. THAT damaged the show and its reputation heavily
@chinnibunz Fr, im pretty sure they knew it was getting cancelled bc of the wedding but they kept doing useless episodes intsead, i dont think they're 100% useless(unless for some of them like restaurant wars, dewey wins, etc) but like cmmon im pretty sure most ofthe fandom would rather have a good ending than the development of side characters.
It wasn’t about fascism, though, right? It was about a very relatable ideal of being perfect. Understanding that perfection shouldn’t be the goal will change your whole outlook on life.
@@daianmoi8528 But she was also a mass murderer. She almost wiped out humanity and killed millions of gems. Telling a serial killer he isn't perfect isn't necessarily going to change him.
Storm base reviews You make a good point. But isn’t it more complicated than that? Pink didn’t think much of humans until she actually met them. Pink was also partially responsible for the war that killed gems. That doesn’t necessarily make Pink an “evil” person because people are more complicated than that. Also, Steven is family to White Diamond. He’s like her grandkid. I totally think the ending was rushed, but if they had more episodes to do it, I think they would have talked a lot more.
@@daianmoi8528 Well honestly the problem is that the Diamonds never pay for Killing unknown number of gems, destroying countless Planets, etc. They just got slaps on the wrist & "be good speeches". They are basically 3 space Hitler's that turned good because of a Child's plea. There should have been a punishment for everything they've done.
I personally hope we get a Season where all gems that were bubbled for no reason(Rose Quartzs') rebel or perhaps we see the reason the Diamonds are even making armies. Who are they fighting?
I loved in empire strikes back when vader joined the rebels and then Luke told the emperor "you know you don't HAVE to be a sith" and palpatine got blushy and cried
Kinda reminds me of that one moment in Paper Mario TTYD where Bowser gets beaten by Mario but then Mario gives a huge speech about feelings and the power of friendship and gives Bowser a hand, then they all join together and the Shadow Queen emerges, but Mario uses the Crystal Stars to show her the power of love and she immediately stops spreading darkness and she and the dragons she owned all go and live in Poshley Heights, completely redeemed. Also reminds me of Super Paper Mario where Dimentio is convinced to stop destroying the multiverse by Peach giving him a kiss.
Calm antagonists such as white diamond tend to be more creepy in my opinion like they could be in the middle of harming you or about to harm you but before or while doing it they acts like the calmest person in the world 😭
I saw Change Your Mind when I was much younger so I never really thought much of it and was just happy and excited seeing all of the cool, cliche elements like all the new fusions and white diamond, but now that I'm actually old enough to have an opinion I thought that White had the most potential out of anything in the show, only to end up being pretty bad.

The pink diamond twist shouldn't have been controversial. I was watching it with my girlfriend and literally called it back in season 2. As soon as Blue Diamond was revealed. Especially since Yellow was mentioned in season 1. I was like "Oh. There's 2 diamonds. But they couldn't stop a single quartz? Rose was probably a diamond herself and just didn't wanna be on homeworld since we see how much she love's Earth". But the payoff in S5 made it worth it.
ok but I was shocked there was a controversy. I assumed everyone loved it, those who didn't see it coming and those who did. beucause it was set up well.
im pretty sure that the main reason it was controversial was because it meant that rose now owned pearl and so pearl falling in love with rose was just a slave falling in love with her master and basically ruined most of pearl's character cuz it was unclear if anything she ever did in relation to rose was of her own free will anymore. aside from that point i dont think anyone had any other issue with the reveal, at least at that time
@@ggundercover3681 I think why people didn't like the Pink Diamond Twist is...well, her plan so it put lightly quite selfish and not well planned. The concept of her being Pink Diamond is fine but the execution leaves a lot to be desired especially the way they handle Pink Diamond herself. Honestly, if they flushed out Pink Diamond earlier, this plot twist would have been much more impactfully...like maybe get an episode that focused on Pink Diamond before her death with a couple of hints but then again...this show has a nasty habit of forcing Steven onto us.
So um... How does the Diamond that seems least involved in personal interactions... who also rules a race that doesn't have children... know what a child is or what childlike behavior looks like?
I agree with the comment above. He's Steven Universe, he feels the need to help and care about people who honestly don't deserve it, but that doesn't mean he liked them or wanted to be near them. For example, when Stevonnie and Kevin are racing he tells her that he's a jerk because his brother is dying in the hospital, and Stevonnie shows real concern about him before he tells her it was a joke, which really doesn't help her like him more.
It makes sense as a personality quirk, some people just doesn't rub eachother the right way. It would be cool to expand that thought and show what steven is pushed away by but sadly it's only Kevin. I don't really think citing steven universe future is fair as that came out later and actively worked to fix certain criticisms about the show. Hell they address the steven centric story telling others railed it on. Also he never showed any major disdain for the diamonds besides awkward discomfort until the end of future and by that point he was lashing out at everything and had them literally going into his brain guts. Not as visceral as Kevin got from just walking into the room.
@@leviathan8282 that was again near the end where steven was emotionally unstable and she was poking around in his brain. It is understandable as to why he would lash out at her specifically, but steven through the movie and beginning episodes treated them like a guy trying to bail on a very clingy family. At least to me it doesn't really sells that he hates.
I like to just imagine "change your mind" was a whole season and that it was actually good and their development makes sense..some how. And ,im as you said, ignoring the episode completly😅
What if the diamonds made a scheme in the space between the movie, and change your mind? In the beginning of the movie, it sounds like they were only doing this to get something like pink. Now that they have Spinel, there is no purpose to be nice anymore. They obviously don't like it.
Hey remember when the Diamonds were portrayed as supremacy figures, beings of unmatched power that seemed to have the power to wipe out civilisations, but at the same time were shrouded in tons of mystery. Yeah can we just go back to that.
Honest to god I would rather have had the final conflict be some well-executed but mostly-mindless schlocky Studio Trigger slugfest between the Crystal Gems and White Diamond than the bullshit we got. The could even make White Diamond as powerful as she is - complete with the power to instantly turn any other gem into her meat-puppet - and have Steven still be powerful enough to kick her ass one-on-one, because his gem is also a diamond. Like he didn't need to shatter her but he at least should have had to use a significant amount of physical force to _subdue_ her. Even _The Last Airbender_ did the "not-killing-the-bad-guy" ending better.
It's very odd that the last line that changes white has to do with children as gems don't have children and have no concept of what being a child is like (as noted by Rose during that babysitting episode)
That's literally what I think about every time I see that scene, she says he's acting like a child but like how tf does she even know what acting like a child is????
Maybe that's another term they use for newly emerged gems? They obviously still have some learning to do once they get out (as we saw from the flashback episode(s) in the kindergarten) so maybe they also act like children
Imagine if White Diamond, realizing she's imperfect, suddenly tries to destroy herself in an attempt to be rid of imperfection much like how the Diamond Authority operates, and it's up to the Crystal Gems to stop her. That's what I was expecting anyways when she lost it.
I legit remember early in the show I downloaded those songs and would sing them over and over, even for my parents to hear. imagine them trying to figure out wtf giant woman was about. I still miss them. and the song love like you is still so gorgeous.
It's so cool how now that it's revealed that Rose was Pink Diamond, Pearl's entire angle of being a free thinking gem is a complete lie. They just completely chopped up her character ig
Pearl's whole set of flaws, to me, has always been Pink, and before we knew Pink, it was Rose. That was kind of the whole point of the problem of her character. It's something that's been slightly confronted a couple times throughout the show, and it would've been confronted during the final season of the show if Steven Universe wasn't canceled due to the gay wedding.
@@logandabrute Future tried but, well, this was when Rose/Pink was the character they concentrated all their hate towards because she was dead and incapable of responding to anything. I love how the Diamonds went from being these regal, genocidal tyrants that have terrorized the galaxy for millenias, to Steven's weird clingy aunts in the space of a few episodes. It's like if Darth Vader survived at the end of Return of the Jedi, and the very next scene in the epilogue is him just being an akward dad to Luke, and everyone is just like "Yeah, ok, we're cool with this".
Personally I think that the theory about Pink Diamond basically having an Aura that "corrupts" Gems around her after she started rebelling explains a lot. Also being why the Perfect White Diamond became slightly Pink after Steven's did that Shock wave waking everyone up. Also why Blue and Yellow start "rebelling" and feeling after coming into contact with that Aura. You also have that line about how every gem that comes to Earth ends up rebelling against the Diamond Authority.
Peridot: one of many servants of the Diamonds, merely a technician in the empire, has never killed anyone, very believable motivation. Slowly redeemed over the course of several episodes The Diamonds: literal dictators running an EVIL EMPIRE, have destroyed countless planets and countless lives, evil for the sake of power/control/“perfection”. Redeemed in one episode Makes sense
Yeah if they were gonna do this, they should've toned down their ruthlessness since the beginning... I mean everyone is giddy giddy and dancing and talking with these three mass murderers? like...what? Also that motivation for being evil is weak and dumb AF... 🙄 What a mess. All this bothers me more than the "turning" of White Diamond. (granted I'm not a fan of the show but I've picked up what happens throughout it from youtube videos)
It feels more like the diamonds haven't been completely redeemed for the past 2 years(between season 5 finale and the movie). It's more like they were humoring Steven so he can stay on Homeworld with them.
I hated how we never got an origin of the Diamonds. The gem species as a whole is interesting because it is completely manufactured, which leads me to believe that another race (sneople?) created them. I always wondered WHY the Gem Empire (Gempire?) was continously expanding in the first place? It's not like they NEED resources or they'll die. Unless they get damaged they're effectively immortal, so I don't know what all this conquering was to serve anyway.
^^ This has always been my belief, that the Sneeple created at least White Diamond before some sort of event that meant they all had to hibernate or go into stasis or something, with the Gems meant to maintain/construct everything for it to be ready when they awoke again. Obviously the Gems became sentient at some point after and spiraled off course.
You know invincible?? I always imagined gem empire to be kid friendly viltrum They think they are superior and they think they are deserving of everything, and their point is pretty great because, what is there to stop them?
The purpose of expanding their empire seems to be to propagate. They can't make more gems without taking the resources of other planets. The real question is why do they need to make more of themselves?
Until we actually MET HER, I got the impression that white was this totalitarian, absolute and pure force. Not like Yellow or Blue or Pink, she had an absolute personality. She should have stayed that way. She should have been this unchanging single personality that embodies the essence of the Gem Empire, which would have made the finale battle MUCH more interesting.
Better idea: She should have been literally Homeworld. Like Ego the Living Planet, her goal would be to terraform all planets in the universe into extensions of her 'perfect' self.
That line "Did you get it all out of your system?" Was some straight up (spoilers) Brave New World + Toxic Femininity shit. As a hater it would have changed my mind if it had followed through. Shame though.
And it would tied to the fact that white diamonds are pure carbon while colored diamonds have impurities within their structure But no MUH FEELINGS THO
@@Shockguey Not really.... It fits perfectly with what we learned about Pink, and embodies the absolute, totalitarian, perfect/delusional mother figure that doesn't really pay attention to what her kids are actually going through. They should have kept her that way as a juxtaposition to Steven/Pink's intrigue and understanding nature.
It's strange how he makes it seem like Steven just dropped them out of nowhere. While what was happening is that they where barely gliding down after jumping of one of the hands right? Hanging there unstably.
I checked TV tropes after hearing that, and was furious that that trope makes no reference at all to the phrase "butterfingers." Not even the alternative titles.
That’s part of why I feel like the writers aren’t the only ones at blame for why the end of Steven Universe felt so rushed. CN always does this with their shows, where they always shorten down super big plot lines for little to no reason.
If they wanted to end the show and give some actual plot fuel for the movie and future, they should've had Steven be forced to use the breaking point on White. It proves to him that not *every* problem can be solved diplomatically, frees homeworld, gives a use to the otherwise open plot thread that is the breaking point, vindicates Bismuth, and allows for a darker tone for the maturing audience of the series going forward (and gives them a better means of adding in all that weird PTSD shit they had in future).
I hate the message that you can solve *everything* diplomatically. Some people are just committed to being assholes. To use a historical example look at WWII. The Japanese knew the US was pissed off that they'd invaded China and also knew the US would become even more angry when Japan invaded French Indochina. They wanted what they wanted and if the US wouldn't let them have it then they'd attack the US (and obviously did). After Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union was Britian (and eventually the US) supposed to say "if you leave the Soviet Union we'll let you keep Poland"? No. There was no diplomatic solution that didn't involve Germany giving up everything it had taken. They weren't going to do that so a fight was inevitable. Sometimes fighting is necessary either because some people want what they want and are willing to use force to get it. Other times you're going to have to fight because someone has taken something and your moral code will not allow you to let them keep it. In neither case is fighting a weakness but a strength. Refusing to fight at all means that anyone who uses force will succeed every time and that's not a world anyone should want to live in.
I know no one will see this, but the problem with white is she is a pure evil villain and steven is a flat character arc. He doesn't change, he'll try to redeem anyone. No one is beyond saving for him. But she really is. So there was no satisfying ending without changing a character. And you're right they wanted to end it so they went with the easy option of turn our pure evil villain good in under thirty minutes, thus the narrative dissonance is created.
THIS. When we saw white diamond, I thought she was gonna be the first one Steven truly couldn't help because it's literally impossible. But then she goes 😳 and it's all good??? Could've been great character development all around...
Which is ironic because Steven really didn’t change like at all they made everyone else change because the 14 year old boy told them to, but somehow in the movie he made a song about how much he changed... but *He didn’t*
@@sybow2925 he did become more competent if you compare him to himself from first episodes of season 1. But in terms of character traits and world views yeah, he didn't change much.

I think she should have had maybe a couple episode where Steven started getting in her head like with peridot because it just doesn’t seem to make much sense that white changes her mind that fast😂
I like the ideia of how white diamond turned "good", like, she was so convinced of her own perfection and that her way was the only way that Steven just by existing shatters everything she believes in, she breaks. But yeah the execution was indeed rushed because cartoon network CANCELLED THE SHOW because of reunited
I would agree with this, but this show was never good at pacing out this story. Think about the crazy slow build (especially if you were watching it as they came out with the giant hiatuses) then lightening fast ending to the cluster arc. Even in the movie the pacing was a huge problem, especially at the end but there was also a lot of bloat in the beginning. The same thing happened in the last season of SU, except on 1000% speed and I imagine this pacing issue would have only been slightly less egregious had they been given another season or two to round the series out.
@@tomikun8057 I'm not saying I dislike a slow build. I liked the show for so long because of it and the general concept. I thought that the show was slowly going to build it's world larger and then quickly raise the stakes to match it before tying the whole thing together with a satisfying ending. When the cluster arc ended with "well I guess Steven can just talk his way out of anything" I knew the show runners had a problem. Rebecca has not matured as a writer yet, she's still in the fan-fic stage. Meaning she can capture character, create good day-to-day character drama, and incorporate interesting world ideas into her story, but she has not learned how to bring a story full circle into an independent and completed work. She wasn't ready to show head and we can see that clearly in the messy final product we have today. Even given a second chance with SU: Future, she failed utterly again (edit to clarify: to finish another story properly).
Are you serious? The Diamond Authority is the closed to real world Nazis, any cartoon has ever done. Hell, few media have actually depicted the Nazis as close as SU does. I mean, they have slavery, only strive for purity, and have killed MILLIONS!!! of their own kind to create the Cluster, a weapon of massdestruction, which doubles as a mass grave, as well as probably countless other intelligent species, because they see them as beneath them! They have armies to conquer entire worlds, manipulate the mind of their servants, a fascist salute, DO I NEED TO CONTINUE? The only reason, Steven and anyone on Earth were not immediately killed by them, is because Steven could proove that he was one of them!! Otherwise they would be all dead! Remember the Diamond light, that corrupted any Gem on Earth except the Crystal Gems? Well the Diamonds didn't know that it would do that. They thought it would kill any single one of them on the spot! The Diamonds didn't turn "good"! They cant! They are irredeemable! And I do not take Pink Diamond out of my critique! She started a war, because she was bored, and kept manipulating her friends till the very end. She is just as guilty, if not even more so. Why do so many shows trying to keep redeeming the most vile people imaginable? If genocide is on the table, then redemption is out the window! Why did Rebecca Sugar make the stakes that f-in high? Why do the literal facist get to be the first in line of deserving a redemption? Why the Third Reich, when there is a perfectly fine Kevin right there, who need I remind you DID NOT KILL MILLIONS OF PEOPLE???
Actually, pretty sure Yellow Diamond always had a goofy, offbeat sense of humor. It's fairly obvious that they all adored Pink Diamond for the levity she brought to an otherwise emotionally empty and often abusive family, and that Yellow reacted to Pink's "death" by avoiding emotions and joy since they were painful reminders. It's still super uncomfortable that the Diamonds replaced Pink with Spinel, tho. I can't see it being a healthy dynamic given the abandonment trauma on all sides; seems rather codependent. ://
it’s honestly really disappointing to see White diamond get redeemed in the first place. in my opinion the trope of “everyone can be saved” is harmful because *it’s literally not true*. A manipulative, narcissistic portrayal of a ruthless murderous and vengeful dictator not only doesn’t DESERVE redemption (even in a show where that’s the main theme) but would NEVER change their mind due to the inherent fact that she believes she is perfect. When someone truly believes they are perfect because of npd or other personality disorders they cannot change their view and most likely will not. i don’t want to imply that everyone with personality disorders or npd are manipulative and evil. However in cases where the person could be compared to white diamond, there is no getting through to them. how can a who-knows-how-old alien dictator of an empire change her whole perception and nature through a conversation with someone who is a 14 year old kid???? it totally shits on the positive and healthy message this show was going for i feel, or i guess it overshoots it. In a situation where there is an older figure of authority being abusive, it is NOT the child/victims responsibility to change them!!! i did not realize how angry this video would make me. i completely agree with you. i used to love this show but lost interest around blue diamonds reveal. it’s so sad because you can see how much they took their time in the early seasons, an by the end it feels like they were rushed to finish it and tie up all the loose ends. idk if that’s the fault of the writers or cn but it’s a real fucking shame
I see your point but I'm not sure that's how White Diamond is. If anything, that's more Yellow Diamond, the one who actively destroys and controls. White Diamond is more like the stereotypical god-like being that Kirk has to talk down in classic Star Trek, a being so advanced it struggles to understand humans.
I know this comment is a year old but the show was cut short due to the episode Reunited. The team decided that showing Ruby & Sapphire’s wedding was more important than the showing having a proper finale and I don’t blame them for that.
_it's so disappointing because white diamond seemed so overpowered and intimidating, until all it took to end that conflict was to talk her out of it._
I still feel like, somehow, the finale was supposed to be like a whole other season or two. It really did just feel like someone told them the show was being forced to end earlier than they planned, so they literally just had to go down a checklist of what needed to happen before it did.
Such a interesting premise. The final foe for steven universe is well... Steven universe and his inner conflicts. That's genuinely interesting and could be a fantastic closure to the show... but no. It was rushed and executed poorly. Darn
Maybe they would have had time for another season or two if they hadn't spent like _two seasons' worth of episodes_ on Beach City-related character-plots that usually had zero impact on the main story. Connie was the only human character outside of Steven's family who had a significant presence in the main plot thread throughout the series. Like...did we really need to waste an episode focusing on what was essentially a Grouptale fanfic with Steven and Onion? Was 5 or 6 Lars-centric episodes retroactively justified by making him a plot device to get Steven back on Earth, and who should have played a more important role in the final season given his association with the off-color gems? Did the Crewniverse _really_ need to waste an episode using Mayor Dewey's re-election to condescendingly reassure angry and betrayed Bernie supporters? Or a not-Thanksgiving episode hastily resolving a conflict between Steven and a previously-unseen racist uncle, almost as soon as he appears to try to reassure the audience that their own racist Trump-supporting uncle might be salvageable (which is only true some of the time)? Did the writers _really_ need to restrict the audience's perspective to events where Steven is present, or to use Steven being told a story as a framing device, in order to hide information and effectively present the story's mysteries? Was it worth giving up episode slots that might have been useful for developing other more important characters? The filler problem means most major conflicts are hastily resolved through some bullshit anti-climax and a ridiculous amount of hand-waving: Jasper disappears with Lapis into the ocean for a full season, only to be defeated by Alexandrite the moment they reappear as Malachite; the Cluster goes from a giant nuke ready to destroy Earth at any moment to being content with being trapped inside its core for millions of years after minutes of persuasion from Steven; and of course, there are the Diamonds. Imagine thinking you'd actually have 9 seasons for a proper plot _and_ a ridiculous amount of filler, to tell a story that only needs about 4 or 5 seasons to be satisfying. The absolute hubris.
Lmfao the Diamonds being redeemed is like letting Ozai off the hook in Avatar: The Last Airbender. Just imagine if Aang was like “oh being evil is bad” and then Ozai, the genocidal war-monger, blushed and meekly agreed, and from that day on he always said please and thank you to his generals while drinking some nice jasmine tea, and was never held accountable for his war-crimes because he said he was sorry.
Blue Newt True, they technically weren’t, because they never paid the price that their war crimes entailed. But the story treated them like they were emotionally redeemed, and encouraged the audience to think that because they had issues and were suddenly sorry, they were in the moral clear. “And suddenly, everything was fine.”
To be fair, Aang gave Ozai the opportunity to surrender which is in character, to which Ozai refused and attacked Aang while his back was turned which is in character for him.
I've heard that the diamond's redemption arcs were supposed to be done over the course of two seasons but CN cut them short. If I were put in that situation I wouldn't have redeemed them because no redemption arc is better than a rushed one. They don't even have to be shattered, they could be bubbled, a non-lethal method of defeating them was already written into the show. Though if they were to be redeemed over two seasons I could kinda see it working. Blue and Yellow could probably learn to change but White Diamond should never have been redeemed. She should've been the one major villain in the series that doesn't fall for Steven's "let's be friends" shtick. It's actually insane to me that Jasper, Eyeball, and Aquamarine refuse to change but the facsist dictator White Diamond doesn't.
Steven universe feels like my 8th grade essay that I put hard work into mid way- then I stopped at the end and realized how many words I actually have left so I just wrapped it all up and rushed it together to get it in on time.
It only got cancelled because the writers were intentionally pushing political agenda, which is something cartoon network has always stayed away from. Politics bad, cartoon good
@@justincoltharp9701 ...no? It was because of the wedding, which was between a gay couple. That’s not a political situation, and it shouldn’t be made into one, it’s just coward ness and homophobia on CN’s part
The reason why I was so excited about White Diamond at the beginning of the final arc was because she seemed emotionless and different. She couldn’t be reasoned with, or at least needed to be dealt with differently. I GUESS NOT THOUGH
I would argue that she *was* emotionless and indifferent and couldn't be reasoned with. The good guys failed, and *she took Steven's gem out,* which was absolutely horrifying. What changed her mind was seeing that she was completely wrong about him and therefore about Pink. She didn't just get persuaded by Steven to be good all of a sudden; she saw for herself who he was and realized that she was mistaken, and it put shame and confusion into her that broke down her flawless facade. I do understand why someone would feel that some elements of this ending are too quick or condensed compared to most of the series, but I think that moment of transformation with White is really good and a nicely earned climax for the entire show.
I never thought White Diamond wasn’t going to be reasoned with. The show never comes down on the side of violence being the answer. One of the reasons I predicted the Rose = Pink thing is because that was the most straightforward way the entire conflict could be resolved peacefully
internisus I completely agree. Seeing that Pink was gone, that knowledge literally breaking the pedestal White was standing on, and her seeing her own imperfection in having some pink of her own, to her, being an off color, threw her off her balance and completely shifted her world view. Not to mention that Blue and Yellow, and a lot of Homeworld, was able to see this pink too, losing respect of White immediately. What use is a leader where all of their subjects despise them? There’s some reason White hasn’t been mind controlling everyone this whole time
TheJadedJames idk. if they fight all the time and imply that millions of gems were ripped apart and their mutilated body parts were forced together and they are still hidden beneath the earth, that’s pretty violent to me, even if it doesn’t show it? They really human centipeded millions of gems but one moment of realising white herself isn’t perfect by her standards changes her whole world view? I don’t think so. White has sort of been portrayed as an abusive mother and someone with ideals that ingrained into them doesn’t just change so easily. Usually even when trying to change they will undergo periods of relapse, especially when angry, where they default to their old ways. And I don’t mean just not seeing all life as equal. I mean that smashed in half homeworld planet level.
I like how at 20:26 they were clearly trying to do the same thing as Garnet saying "Welcome to Earth." in Peridot's arc, but they completely messed up everything that came before it
Honestly when White Diamond was first revealed, I LOVED her because she was such a good concept for a villain and i REALLY wanted her to stay that way. Whether Yellow Diamond or Blue Diamond changed to good or not, didn't matter, as long as White Diamond remained the villain I would have been on board. but no... they just all have to do a 180 don't they....
White is literally one of the creepiest villains I've ever seen. And I love it. The way she was calmly saying slightly creepy things made her so unnerving (the t posing didn't help lol). I wish she stayed that way.
@@miguelangelquintanillaapar5361 honestly, it's understandable that she has feelings but her whole 'badass, no one can beat me' and Blues 'im so sad were polar opposites which had an interesting dynamic, but then 3 of these badass Nazi gems, are all of the sudden forgiven because they have feeling

I would have loved to see a vilian that couldn't be changed, no matter what happened, their opinion sticked and the only way through the problem was just bubbling them, it would show that you can't save everybody, Jasper was going in that direction but it did a full 180. It would give Steven more s t r e s s and stuff, more reasons to discorag him, letting steven know it's fine to lean on somebody's shoulders. ( They did this fine with him becoming a monster and everybody helping him to show him that even he needed help and it was okay) but thaTs juSt mY oPinIoN
Yes. That's what White Diamond was built up to be or should have been. I can understand that Yellow and Blue being the other monarchs/royalty of the empire doing what they did in part of fear of the most powerful monarch which is White and that literally mirrors what happens throughout human history where other members of the monarchy, aristocracy or royalty have to get in line what the leader says. Jasper's character serves as an initial introduction to the kind of person you can't change or immediately change and if she as a foot soldier of the system is so stubborn and indignant then imagine how stubborn and indignant the creator and enforcer of such a system would be, that is, White Diamond.
the worse about this it isnt the fighting, but "you cant kill them because yes haha". as if bubling them up isnt almost the same, not mentioning its a fucking war, you are not going to be carefull with your oponent.
Ironically not going through with the breaking point was still the better choice in the end, but not out of moral scruples but because we later saw exactly, what monstrosity the Diamonds were capable of in a grief-fueled rage believing one of theirs was shattered
not trying to defend the show or anything, but i guess if you think about it from rose quartz's/pink diamond's pov, she probably didnt want to harm her fellow diamonds? idrk, it doesn't make sense, that's the only thing i can think of. but whatever, steven had no excuse to follow that way of thinking
@@Monochrome2004 Yeah but that’s the problem, the leader of the rebellion is actually one of the oppressive upper class, whose basically just engineered a civil war so she can have fun with her human playthings and earth because it’s nice there and she doesn't have to deal with her oppressive family which sucks because rose quartz originally was slated to have defended earth because she felt that life deserves a chance and there is so much about earth that is promising (based on a video she leaves for Steven in season 2 or 3) the writers threw out that concept to pul the “pink is rose” twist even though that makes rose/pink look even worse... When the movie villain who immediately gets introduced and has an hour to be a compelling character has a more logical arc than the ultimate antagonist of the whole serious you know somethings wrong.
That's the thing. Spinnel had an hour, White didn't. It would have been better to not introduce White in season 5 and leave her for the movie and or the movie and season 6.

I thought it would be cool that in a show about redeeming and accepting people, White Diamond would be someone that is completely impossible to change,+ it would also be interesting to explore the change this has on everyone
The message that everyone can change if you're nice enough is such a bad one. Some people are just assholes and will always be perfectly happy being that way.
I hate how the diamonds who shattered so many gems can be forgiven by the fandom. But everyone hates pink and can't forgive her just because of the movie. Why is every villain redeemable except pink diamond? It's hypocritical.
I never wanted the diamonds to be redeemed. I wanted them to get beaten, then be given that sweet how could I loose to you moment(Especially White), and then shattered. The only Diamond with even the chance to be redeemed(Which would have to be done right) is Blue. I mean at least Blue changing her ways because she loves pink so much, therefore taking the time to listen to Steven makes sense.

I know! There were so many good episodes where they could've started this development. Steven and Pearl had so many moments in the show that could've built their relationship to the point where they could've fused before the finale. Better yet, they could've waited for suf with that episode with Volleyball to make a pivotal point in their relationship and for them to fuse. But no, they had to throw it in😫
This show writes itself sometimes these concepts are so great I don't know what happened.
Writers: haha dance time
I feel like the series was hugely rushed because Cartoon Network fucking it up
I can even tell you the exact moment it should have happened.
Bully: *pushes kid over*
Kid : "bully no bullying"

One time, I even tried to make peace with a Nazi who I encountered online, and, when my mom asked why I would even talk to a Nazi, my reasoning was that, if Steven could redeem anyone, so could I. Just last night, I had an anxiety attack because someone was cyberbullying me, and my mom kept telling me to defend myself, even encouraging me to use swears, but I didn’t want to fight back in fear of escalating the situation.

Exactly. The diamonds are practically war criminals, killing thousands of life forms across the universe to expand their empire. They should’ve shattered the diamonds honestly. I really like the show’s ending despite the clear flaws but god IF CN JUST GAVE IT TIME
It would have probably been the best ending for the show if it actually got some time, but it had about three episodes of buildup, two of wich were for setup and lasted only 11 minutes
At least TOW got three parts equally shared in screentime to build up to an ending, two hours to get to know everything and actually build up to a conclusion, while this gem of a show got 20 minutes of setup before going “ok, did you do all you needed to do for the ending? Don’t care” and force feeding a 45 minute climax that wasn’t enough to wrap up all the loose ends. THAT damaged the show and its reputation heavily
@chinnibunz Fr, im pretty sure they knew it was getting cancelled bc of the wedding but they kept doing useless episodes intsead, i dont think they're 100% useless(unless for some of them like restaurant wars, dewey wins, etc) but like cmmon im pretty sure most ofthe fandom would rather have a good ending than the development of side characters.

Also, Steven is family to White Diamond. He’s like her grandkid. I totally think the ending was rushed, but if they had more episodes to do it, I think they would have talked a lot more.

He actually hates them too, it is shown in steven universe future
I always wondered WHY the Gem Empire (Gempire?) was continously expanding in the first place? It's not like they NEED resources or they'll die. Unless they get damaged they're effectively immortal, so I don't know what all this conquering was to serve anyway.
Yeah, hitler also had no reason to kill those jews and start a war. I guess it's just psychotic people doing psychotic things.
Future was supposed to give us an origin of the diamonds but for some reason they scrapped that concept and replaced it with another episode
You know invincible?? I always imagined gem empire to be kid friendly viltrum
They think they are superior and they think they are deserving of everything, and their point is pretty great because, what is there to stop them?
The purpose of expanding their empire seems to be to propagate. They can't make more gems without taking the resources of other planets. The real question is why do they need to make more of themselves?
Until we actually MET HER, I got the impression that white was this totalitarian, absolute and pure force. Not like Yellow or Blue or Pink, she had an absolute personality. She should have stayed that way. She should have been this unchanging single personality that embodies the essence of the Gem Empire, which would have made the finale battle MUCH more interesting.

Why do the literal facist get to be the first in line of deserving a redemption?

thelinedrive Lol two years is two hours in gem time, they've been around for centuries; jank development is jank.
I lowkey love it tho

True
yeah cause it could've been a awesome fight but they missed the chance to make it rlly good and they made it so they just gotta talk
And it took like two seconds
Probs because she was so powerful, they literally couldn’t even beat her, even if they tried. So they made up so bullshit story.
I know!!! And they even teased us with Obsidian, which made it feel even more empty.
Darn
The show actually was canceled by CN. And I believe change your mind was supposed to be a whole other season. Sadly that’s not how it worked out
@@nathanbeals4583 Source?
They originally had nine seasons planned out
Maybe they would have had time for another season or two if they hadn't spent like _two seasons' worth of episodes_ on Beach City-related character-plots that usually had zero impact on the main story.
LoL I made this joke once and SU stans told me to fuck off
The diamonds aren't redeemed though.
Blue Newt
True, they technically weren’t, because they never paid the price that their war crimes entailed. But the story treated them like they were emotionally redeemed, and encouraged the audience to think that because they had issues and were suddenly sorry, they were in the moral clear. “And suddenly, everything was fine.”
Crazy Person I'm an SU fan and I really liked the joke

Implying this feminist propaganda show was good to begin with.
Rebecca Sugar: *THANKS FOR THE MONEY, DUMMIES!*
internisus I completely agree.
