This week we look at our 120,000 mile and 2 year 3 month old MG5. Tyre wear, problems, traction battery SOH and looking at how they hold up in comparison to ICE vehicles.
Mg5 taxi driver here I can confirm everything he said is spot on. I clean and protect everything on mine so mines is in perfect condition as it was the day it drove out the show room. Top tip buy lanoguard and seal everything on the bottom and around the bonnet holes and charge port and you will not get any rust at all.
I've done 15k in my M3LR since October. I've also had to fill the washer up. They really should fit a bigger washer bottle as this level of upkeep is ridiculous. 😂
Great update. Very pleased to hear the business goes from strength to strength. Apart from a control unit replaced under warranty around 22k miles, my LR MG5 that I bought in 2022 on your YT recommendation has never given me any problems. Delighted with it. Thanks!
I saw your videos whilst googling MG5 as my MG ZS dealer was calling me in to discuss VIP deals after just 12 months of ownership. I’ve had MG3 mk1, GS, ZS so far. I’m delighted to say I’m taking delivery of a brand new MG5 SE next week in Piccadilly Blue for an unbelievable £19300 - looking forward to clocking up the miles, and watching your channel. Jonny from the telly recommended you personally so this is the place to be for EV owners. Keep going both of you - a worthwhile channel amongst a lot of distracting wannabes, it does matter out here!
There's a cabbie round the corner from me with one, 18 months old, often parked next to mine. Only chatted to him once while at the nearest chargers. He seems happy enough with it [if not Shell's rapid charger prices!!].
Hi James, greetings from Oxford. Always great to see your content. There is so much FUD out there about BEVs, tyres being just part of this. I went BEV in 2019 with a BMW i3, the factory Bridgestones made it to 37k miles, I replaced them with Continentals, which are much quieter and have more tread depth. My i3 has been faultless too, apart from a couple of annoying interior rattles which I hope to sort the summer (glove box mech and drivers door card). When I drive an ICE car now they feel so ‘old’, unresponsive, noisy, just old tech. By choice I would not go back to an ICE car now, certainly as a daily driver.
I love watching your videos so I can learn of your terms! Bits and bobs. I’m sure it’s no different from how English has evolved over time across the US as well. Love it!
As others have said- videos like this are exactly what are needed to disprove all the ridiculous lies and cr@p that are spewed out on other channels and educate the non ev owners that ev's are not scary! My 71 plate MG5 has just hit 33800 miles and I can honestly say it's the best car I have owned and suits my needs perfectly. It's reliable & trouble free and just works. The only thing I've had to do is change the front tyres (they both got damaged). Brake pads are like new, no rattles or squeeks- I'll take a careful look at the charge flap now, but so far no problems. I am seriously thinking this car could be a long term "keeper". Your updates and my experience are only reinforcing that idea.
Nice one James. I own a BMW i4, and have done 12k miles so far. Very reassuring to know how well EVs are holding up to the miles. 92% after 120k miles is decent.
Well done for this MG. It’s hard to believe that the suspension never had any repair being this a heavy car and the roads in the Uk. My Tesla Model s had 2 new fore arms in 3 year and now the upper arms needs doing.
What a workhorse! And I love the unicorn. My e-Niro has developed a similar fault with the charge flap. Sometimes it doesn't unlock and takes locking/unlocking several times to get it working. Apparently that's a known issue with the actuator(?) so I'll be getting Kia to sort it under warranty. (Hence why I didn't ask Lee to look at it the other day when he did our service!)
Very interesting. I’m after an EV as a daily runabout. I was considering 2018/19 EvGolfs, but if you can get one of these for under £10k I might have to reconsider. An estate is very practical
Hi James , currently running a Ev van made by the same mg company a Maxus deliver3 had it a year 12k mile in a year it’s working for me so well , costing less to buy than I used to use in fuel in my old l200 truck ⛽️ keep up the good information
Thanks James, based on your advice I got the davanti tyres. They have loads better grip than the factory tyres. I have had two services from clevleys. It's great to have my EV in such good hands.
I'm a mechanic with 44 years of eperience and I'm well and truly sold on EVs. Had a 38kwh ionic and now on a 64kw Kona. Both have 100%soh and 4 years old. Not so many miles as your mg though.
Good to hear from you and glad all is going well. About to investigate Cleevely carrying out 2nd service on my ZS TCLR if warranty remains still valid.
I will be getting my service done through Cleeveley as they are clearly enthusiastic about what they do. However, the warranty was one of my concerns, does it also renew the breakdown cover?
Many thanks, im thinking of getting one as my next cab, could save me 3k in fuel p.a. Whites hard to get because its a mandatory colour for many councils for cabs.
My 2014 Leaf has 240.000km, still original break pads and disks, and tyres changes around 50.000km. But due to lack of thermal management it has lost around 30% of SOH. Still a great commuter and cheap to run.
Excellent review James. I was wondering only today when I saw a white MG5 why I hadn't seen any content from you recently. Hope that being busy is good busy. 👍
Fantastic reliability. Our 2016 Leaf is a car that owned the longest and is still the most reliable. It's over 90k miles now, and insurance is the biggest cost on it. Luckily... my wife doesn't get bored of the car like me, so long as it doesn't cost anything to fix, why change it (unlike me)
Just bought a 23 plate for taxi work. Hopefully you'll be servicing it in the south west. I did send you a email couple months ago reference that. Well happy with the car so far
@Jamesandkate servicing is every 20,000 miles ain't it? Im currently on 6,600 miles, car is 10 months old, but I just bought it last month, so miles will go up quickly now I'm using as taxi.
Hi James from Ayrshire Scotland loving the update. Mine is 22 Mg5 exclusive 30000 miles .Find on the bumpy roads here it eats tyres ,on the third set of front now.Alsi put it in for a service and had the n/s/f wishbone replaced as it was badly knocking. Also think the o/s wishbone on it way out too.Had a nightmare as a local garage broke the tyre sensor valve which could only be programed by MG which they reluctantly eventually paid, but wasn't the cars fault. Great car crap suspension but i can live with it😂
Fantastic update with reassurance the MG5 is a workhorse! I am keen on them as I plan to get to more trade fairs and events, as well as doing the odd gig across the Dorset/Hampshire area and maybe a long-distance break sometime in the future. Definitely at the top of my wish list when funds allow!
Ask at your local mg dealer for pre registered mg evs. MgUk registers them and the dealers can buy them online. My mg5 was registered last year in march and I bought it with delivery miles in August for £22k. 8 years warranty and 4 years free servicing. Bargain and definitely the best car I’ve had for running costs and speed
Hey James, I took the plunge on the Ioniq electric, the efficiency is crazy as you know - hard choice between the Ioniq and your MG here - but ultimately leaned toward the Ioniq. Loving it so far, hoping for high mileage too as I know they're capable...
Hi James, fantastic content as always, i use the MG5 daily and it is a great car, do you think the battery degradation is more linked to age, rather than mileage? Just wondered what your thought's were on this specific topic
This is exactly the type of real-world, open and honest video that disproves all the BS that does the rounds on mainstream media outlets. More to the point, your cars live a much harder life than the vast majority of EV's will ever get from ordinary owners doing 12,000m a year. So realistically, someone could buy a new MG5 and know it will easily last them 10 years. I reckon the majority of car owners keep a car for less than half that long. I'm curious ....... at some point you will have to replace this and the other white high mileage MG5 you own. Is that decision going to be made only when the cost of replacing stuff becomes an issue? I'll be very interested to see what mileage they've covered when that time arrives. My guess is approaching 250,000m.
Hi. I think realistically we'll replace them before that. We've talked about it at 150/175, because ultimately they are starting to get knocked about and they are customer facing vehicles. Nothing set in stone as yet, but for now, it'll keep plodding on.
Have the same colour and trim MG5. Had it since new and done 20,000 miles and it’s been great. It’s got good range, has space for a family and has a lot of kit for the money. Hope they do another MG5 before I’m due to swap as really the MK2 was just a facelift. Great cars and at used prices a bargain. Agree about white paint, it seems to chip easily just from stone chips etc but does hide the dirt well too😊
Wow! I'm so glad I found your video. I do around 18,000 miles a year for my job (a lot of stop-start town driving) and I was wondering about picking up a three year old Mg5 for around £10k. Would this be a good buy?
Great to see all is well, i noticed you said that no fluids have been changed pretty sure the main dealer will want to change brake fluid. could you give a brief description of what has been done for servicing
Good to hear! I bought the newer MG5 based on your videos. It’s been brilliant. I’ll get you to look after mine after my service deal is done. What were the tyres you were using?
wow, that ZS is very reassuring! Had mine 3.5 years and only got 22k on the clock so I have many, many years of driving that ahead of me! Any idea if that had a lot of rapid charging on it? 95% of mine is home charging so assume that's less stress on the battery. But 186k miles @83% SOH is just impressive.
Our MG5 died after going through a very small amount of water (like, a few inches). The dealer charged £300 to repair it (they 'dried it out', put on an a new 12V battery and reflashed a bunch of ECUs that had faults which wouldn't clear). With that and ongoing issues with the infotainment (CarPlay being broken, radio crashing and rebooting) and MG UK's utter disdain for their customers, we traded it in for an e-C4 after just over 3 years. Much happier not being an MG customer.
With that kind of weekly mileage it would be a interesting video if you documented your charging week to see how easy / difficult an ev effects your schedule
These EVs are all very well, but you miss out on the real thrill of driving. Driving is all about experiencing the unknown, in a petrol or diesel car (of which I've had many over the years), every time you drive them you experience the exhilarating thrill of 'breakdown anxiety'.. literally any of about 100 moving parts could fail causing catastrophic failure at any moment. Then you've got the art of financing them - it's a real skill to manage a budget with an ICE car - you absolutely know that something is going to go wrong, sooner rather than later and you know it's going to hit your pocket - hard. Then, of course you've got range anxiety... most people talk about range anxiety with EVs, but over the last 5 years, all of my local petrol stations have been knocked down - most are Starbucks, or Tesco's Local now, so ICE drivers have to go further afield to find one. Unlike EV's you don't have multiple chargers on every street like here in London, and you certainly cant get petrol from a lamppost.. it's a real thrill to be able to negotiate the ever decreasing landscape of diminishing petrol stations whilst maintaining moral superiority over EV drivers! Plus real Petrol Heads have the following: 1. Who doesent love breathing in copious amounts of Diesel/Petrol fumes every few days? 2. Who doesent love waiting for an old lady to finish her shopping in the petrol station supermarket before you can pay? 3. Imagination and fantasising are essential routines for a healthy mind - ICE drivers exercise those functions when they come up with ever more preposterous claims about EV's.. ICE drivers can be proud that there are at least some pollutants (minimal though they are) that are made when producing the electricity for EV's to mitigate their guilt of driving a polluting ICE car. I suppose this is analogous to comparing people who defecate on the street, to people who defecate in a toilet - both have an element of waste, so who cares where the waste is dumped... right??
Love your videos, concise and to the point , wonder when your 120k one will be replaced? High miles doesn't bother me. Your at my leafs millage now 123000 miles and I'm at 70% battery health
Nice one James every one of your updates makes me pleased I got the MG5, quick question, we’re only at 27k miles , is it worth upgrading to the newer Trophy model for similar mileage? Not sure what the price difference would be at least 3-4K.. too much for better headlights? :)
Our 71 plate came with Cooper Xeon tyres which aren't available in the UK and seem to be for the Australian market. Had to replace rears at 35k due to inside wear! Told rear wheel can't be adjusted as they're fixed. Overal very please apart from massive depreciation.
Would be interesting if the same EV drivers having issues are the ones that basically do a burnout every green light. Also any car needs basic maintenance. Checking tyre pressures, fluids, a good clean especially over winter and the saltiness. Go on any other MG video and the comments all say chinese crap. It is like a reflex for some. MGs just do the job. So yes these videos are very useful.
New BYD cars come with an 8 year unlimited milage warrantee even as a taxi !! If the vehicle has done less than 100,000 miles at 8 years, the battery wranntee is extended until the car has done 100,000 miles!
@@Jamesandkate thank you James . I drove the MG5 about 2 years ago I was really impressed by it the only thing I didn’t like was the old fashion grill 🤣🤣 . Take care & don’t work to hard .peter
I was ‘comparing notes’ with Smithy the other week when he came to service the e-expert van. Now has 82,000 miles on it. Repair bills are one set of front tyres at 56,000, a light bulb and sets of wipers (one set snapped off on an icy morning). Smithy measured the rear tyres at 3-4mm tread remaining! Faultless. Battery SOH checked at 90% but think that is taken from total capacity which gives the EV database usable value if 68kwh’s and that is what my charger shows it puts in too.
If I could buy one of these used in Canada I would do so TOMORROW. THIS is what we need (at a reasonable price), not a Tesla or A Ford filled to the brim with "premium content" (that I don't need and 95% of the time won't use). I did notice how challenged the owner was MANUALLY OPENING the doors and the liftgate (/s). Also, I once owned a (very fast) muscle car where I burned through a set on normal all-season radials in about 10k miles (but they were fun!). For those who say tires don't last on an EV, check above. I suspect that THESE are driven sensibly (my boss / customer at my last contract bough a Model 3; came in every morning with a shit-eating grin from the acceleration - but that does have a cost ...).
Thanks, yes you can do 1000 miles/week and the battery has minimal degradation after 120,000 miles, most ICE cars the engine would be getting a bit tired now. However there are so many channels that just pump out the bile for the clicks, so good to see a bit of real world hard usage on a Chinese car.
Loving the content, currently leasing a leaf and we considering another lease or purchase when it comes to an end. Do you guyscover the east of England (Peterborough) area?
In January it became legal to switch from halogen to LED here in DK with some restrictions... it could be in Europe... Not sure, but the official document do state :"that the light source must be approved by an authority in an EU country e.g KBA in Germany"
Am thinking of buying one of these second hand, is it an easy process to check the SOH prior to purchase to get an idea of how well it's been looked after via something similar to LeafSpy?
Certainly. SAIC, who own MG, make VW's on licence in China so have access to their older parts, so often use VW switch gear and other bits in their cars.
Makes sense!. I drive an MG Marvel (same wheel) "Norway" and keep hearing the wheel is from VW, been trying to see if I have seen the wheel in another vw, so far no luck 😉.
Hello. I Was wondering. Those miles covered in your work vehicles. What combination of charging are you doing. Mostly DC when out and about. Just interested in the HV SOH% and how it's been charged.
Hi. Charged at home to 100% daily and then rapid charged daily on most days. I couldn't give an accurate split of each, but mine has been rapid charged 311 times
Quick question regarding the break fluid, did just not replace it? For my 2022 ZS EV the service requires changing every 48000 km or two years.. also the suggest to change the engine oil at 80k km, what do you think of this? Cheers from the continent!
We check it for moisture content and it's been fine, so we have left it. EV brakes work less then ICE car brakes and aren't subjected to the same temperature changes. Manufactures want to make money from you and will tell you how important the fluid change is. The reality is, it's very robust and if the water content is ok and the peddle feels ok under foot, you can leave it. However, manufactures specify this for warranty so be careful. We employ Teslas view on this. Change it when required.
Question: I have an original MG 5 LR and am being offered tempting deals to upgrade to the facelift version. It looks smarter, has better wheels and a more advanced Infotainment system but essentially but seems the same car. What do you think … upgrade while it’s a good deal or wait for the MG4 Estate ?
Great content - but one question ever had a fast charger run slow on you ? We have an 11kwh at the local Aldi, but the last couple of times I used it the speed was less than a granny charger !
@@Jamesandkate I have topped my Grey Standard Range MG5 at Tesco's since but I can't say how it has gone as Pod Point haven't logged the session or charged me !
@@Jamesandkate I don't think I can, my standard is a 21 reg, the charging screen doesn't show it just %, range, and how long to go - as for the charger it has no screen. Can you please enlighten this village idiot as to where I look please ?
I glad you show these video because they just shoots down all the fake ev video and news reports One last week was going on about tyres on ev only lasting 12k Others about batteries dead within 3 years etc . Extra cost of setvicing, they go on and on. Our evs are working great they get an annual service. We get 30k out of front tyre they do not recommend front to rear swaps . We had many car where they say this its fine just mean the front drive tyre get replace with wear rear with age . Our next service on hyundia ev is what they class asthe big service. So all the fluids are changed out The battery inverter and motor cooling system the cleaned fluid replaced the heat pump system fluids and gases also the ac . Brakes fluid change and gesr box fluid/ oil changed hyundia have major service every 5 years. Its prepaid so for 5 years servicing 2 mot its cost £460 . Its been the cheapest car to have serviced we not had to pay any additional cost wipers covered by mot part of service plan. Thers been 1 recall done at service thats it the battery shows no loss of power or ability to charge and store power. Ev are easy to own if you have a drive at home because makes charging up easy. If you not got a drive way or off road parking with power supply then its not so easy and govt and councils need to address this
Please DO keep bleating on about how well they are lasting. As has been said by many a person on multiple occasions. It’s the body which will fail long before the rest of the running gear; as you’ve shown to be the case here.
Hi. TH-cam recommended this video, so not familiar with your previous content. When MG started selling these or the previous generation, there were reports of rust under the car, at 120k, do you know the state of play with your example?
Videos might seem repetitive, but these 20k interval updates are exactly what I look forward to seeing, warts and all. Keep them going. Please.
Thanks, will do!

Good choice
Very interesting review and honestly reviewed thanks 👍
I believe I passed you between Taunton and Ilminster last week I was the orange ID Buzz. 😊
That would have been me. I think I may remember your Buzz, it looked ace. Seeing loads in the roads now too 👍🏼
Hi James, fantastic content as always, i use the MG5 daily and it is a great car, do you think the battery degradation is more linked to age, rather than mileage? Just wondered what your thought's were on this specific topic
Tbh, we never see an MG5 with high degredation. They all seem to be holding well, even the original SR models with high or low miles.
18 months into mine (updated MG5) - no problems - I had to clean it after 14 months - not quite self cleaning!
Agree about white paint, it seems to chip easily just from stone chips etc but does hide the dirt well too😊
Might be the same content, but it’s good content
Thanks 👍🏼
Good to see new videos James and great to report - keep it up
Many thanks!
Great vlog. Missing my ev. Hoping around October I’ll be back on the ev side again. Best wishes.
Wow! I'm so glad I found your video. I do around 18,000 miles a year for my job (a lot of stop-start town driving) and I was wondering about picking up a three year old Mg5 for around £10k. Would this be a good buy?
Nice to see you James, that really is one geck of a vehicle. I'll see you or one of your colleagues on the 8th.👍👏
Thanks, Jude. See you on the 8th
Great to see all is well, i noticed you said that no fluids have been changed pretty sure the main dealer will want to change brake fluid. could you give a brief description of what has been done for servicing
Hi. It has had nothing but tyres, wiper blades, screenwash and pollen filters.
Grey one looks nice.
Hi. Yes it is repair charged everyday
Thanks. Keep them coming, I use your videos on this car to point out to the anti-folks how wrong they are.
Thanks, will do!
Still amazing they build this quality.
It's on Cinch now if you want it.
Good to see you back mate
We love the front grill on ours prefer it to the new ones, great car
With that kind of weekly mileage it would be a interesting video if you documented your charging week to see how easy / difficult an ev effects your schedule
You know what, I may do just that.
Plus real Petrol Heads have the following:
I suppose this is analogous to comparing people who defecate on the street, to people who defecate in a toilet - both have an element of waste, so who cares where the waste is dumped... right??
😊👍🏼
Love your videos, concise and to the point , wonder when your 120k one will be replaced? High miles doesn't bother me. Your at my leafs millage now 123000 miles and I'm at 70% battery health
Probably 150k as it's starting to look a bit tatty 🙁
@@Jamesandkate och well if it was any car it would look tatty and if it was a diesel it be belching black smoke like an old steam train. Mg5 or Zoe ?
Nice one James every one of your updates makes me pleased I got the MG5, quick question, we’re only at 27k miles , is it worth upgrading to the newer Trophy model for similar mileage? Not sure what the price difference would be at least 3-4K.. too much for better headlights? :)
Tbh, as a family wagon, I'd take the FL, but I do love my MG. 120k and just works everyday 👌🏻
Our 71 plate came with Cooper Xeon tyres which aren't available in the UK and seem to be for the Australian market. Had to replace rears at 35k due to inside wear! Told rear wheel can't be adjusted as they're fixed. Overal very please apart from massive depreciation.
Sadly the rears are fixed.
Brilliant review bud.
Thank you kindly
The reduction in vibration must also help the rest of the body/suspension etc.
Great vid, thanks for sharing! 💯
Hi James another great video keep up the good work 👍
Thanks 👍
Love our BYD Seal that replaced our Model 3 RWD.
Thank you James for a great video 👍 do you think the mk2 mg5 is a big improvement over the mk1 ?
Hi Peter. I do, and for a family I'd definitely take the MK2. However, for a vehicle were going to work hard, I'd take the MK1.
That's a good point. Repair bills and maintenance are way lower.
Great to see SoH reported.
Tested mine on (Kona 2021) the day it hit 100k miles. 96.9%.
That's phenomenal. 👍🏼
Thanks. Sadly clickbait is king 🤦🏻♂️
Rapid charging speeds still the same? Might pick up one of these once I can find a long range one for under £10k
Yeah. Still hits 90kW on a good day.
Loving the content, currently leasing a leaf and we considering another lease or purchase when it comes to an end. Do you guyscover the east of England (Peterborough) area?
We do, we have a tech based in Norfolk that covers East Anglia 👍🏼
In January it became legal to switch from halogen to LED here in DK with some restrictions... it could be in Europe... Not sure, but the official document do state :"that the light source must be approved by an authority in an EU country e.g KBA in Germany"
Am thinking of buying one of these second hand, is it an easy process to check the SOH prior to purchase to get an idea of how well it's been looked after via something similar to LeafSpy?
I keep hearing the wheel is from VW, can you elaborate ? Thanks.
@@Jamesandkate Thanks for the info - you reply to a huge portion of your comments so chapeau! This is not common after channels hit 10k+ subscribers
Hi James good run around you car, would have been nice if you had any consumption numbers if you had them, M/KWH
Averages 4m/kWh across the year. Winter 3.8 and summer 4.2/3ish.
@@Jamesandkate thanks for the prompt and competent reply. Yes, I'll plan to have the break fluid changed for the warranty. Good night!
That fool Macmaster needs to see your video for a demonstration of how good and long lasting EVs are. Hes an absolute jerk
I have a better word you can use 😂
@@Jamesandkate lol, You know who I mean?
Can you tell us how do you charge, via overnight 7.2kw charger or rapid charging?
50/50 mix.
What brand of tyres do you have on the vehicle. I have Michelin on my A8 3.0TDI with 3 mm remaining after 11000 miles.
Are these now classed as a commercial vehicle? I'm thinking of converting a Kona to a wee van.
Great content - but one question ever had a fast charger run slow on you ? We have an 11kwh at the local Aldi, but the last couple of times I used it the speed was less than a granny charger !
It's likely the charger. 3p chargers split across L1,L2 and L3 and if they have an issue this can occur. Have you tried another unit??
@@Jamesandkate I have topped my Grey Standard Range MG5 at Tesco's since but I can't say how it has gone as Pod Point haven't logged the session or charged me !
@@udtrevyou can see the charging current on the screen. Current x Voltage = kW. Have a look next time you're there 👍🏼
@@Jamesandkate I don't think I can, my standard is a 21 reg, the charging screen doesn't show it just %, range, and how long to go - as for the charger it has no screen.
Can you please enlighten this village idiot as to where I look please ?
6000 km and 200.000 km driven, quite good quality
Great honest review , do you think the mg 4 is as well made also would you buy the 51 or 64 kWh model , cheers Mate From Sydney
Yep, MG4 is great. I'd buy an extended range 77kWh 👍🏼
@@Jamesandkate cheers Mate
I glad you show these video because they just shoots down all the fake ev video and news reports
One last week was going on about tyres on ev only lasting 12k
Others about batteries dead within 3 years etc .
So all the fluids are changed out
The battery inverter and motor cooling system the cleaned fluid replaced the heat pump system fluids and gases also the ac .
Don't watch it then? Plenty of people are interested in what this channel has to say.
@@richardcampbell4223 I did. I’m in support of it. The tone doesn’t read though. I do that all the time too.
Maybe I misread your post, my apologies
I should hope it is lasting at 120k
It's Chinese junk what do you expect 😂
Hi. TH-cam recommended this video, so not familiar with your previous content. When MG started selling these or the previous generation, there were reports of rust under the car, at 120k, do you know the state of play with your example?
It's fine underneath. Just the hard to treat areas have issues.
