  • This week James has been putting the MG5 through its paces as a mobile service vehicle with 1700 miles covered over 9 days. As one of the cheapest, longer range EV's available, it will be interesting to see how it stands up in such tough conditions.

This video would have persuaded me to buy an MG5 if it weren't for one thing - I bought mine at the end of January. I do miss not having an app to set the climate control remotely like I did in the Leaf, but other than that this car is an improvement in every way and I love it. It's just no fuss, no drama all the car that I need.

Hi glad you are pleased with your MG. You say it is better than the Leaf in every way, yet some other commentators have said the Leaf is better built and much quieter. As someone who is contemplating changing current Leaf for the 62Kw one I'm interested in your thoughts. My current Leaf has been 100% reliable and not a squeak or rattle and since I park in a carpark I use the app a lot to preheat and check battery charge state as I'm retired and don't use the car every day.

    • @littlebluepanda394
      @littlebluepanda394 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@jimf4748 I only had one Leaf and I've only had one MG, so this isn't exactly a massive dataset, but the Leaf had far more little squeaks and rattles; the brakes on the Leaf had a tendency to bind almost from day 1 if the car was left for more than a few days, the dashboard had a few squeaks as I drove, little things that were far from a showstopper, but not present at all in the MG. In terms of reliability my Leaf was also 100% with the only real fault being a failed tyre pressure sensor, but if you use the app a lot then be warned that it is a wrench to not have it. The other day was super hot here and I really would have liked to have set the aircon going on the car before going out. It's not a deal breaker, but I do miss it and there will never be an app for the MG because it has no connectivity to use one.
There are some decent deals to be had on the 62kWh Leaf, but if you are spending that kind of money I would definitely advise looking into the Hyundai and Kai offerings, too. If you have any more specific questions then feel free to ask here or on www.reddit.com/r/mg5ev/

@@jimf4748 Jim, I bought my MG5 in December. I've never driven a Leaf but I'm familiar with the Zoe as my wife has a 65 plate 22kw model. The MG5 does not need preheating. Even when the windscreen is frozen, it takes only 2 or 3 minutes to fully defrost and heat the car. 200 miles in all weathers. A great car.

And anybody who has a newborn and a toddler know how important a big boot is. We have the MG ZS EV.. and had a 5 while it was in for a service..
The miles per kW was better in the 5.
The big NO for us was the lip for loading...you can't fit a dog crate in the back as you can't open the crate doors unless you build up the floor.
With 6 dogs, a dog walking, pet shop, and grooming salon we just could not getting rid of the ZS EV or our LWB Kangoo ZE...
I will be selling our Leaf mind you.. it's way too small for our lot ... unless it's a vet run with one of the cats.
We are aiming for a Rivian .... Great size for us and it tows too👍 A great alternative to a Land Rover Discovery IMHO 👍
All said and done I think the MG5 is great as an every day load lugger. I'm sure the vast majority of drivers would be very happy with one.. and it's WAY better than any ice alternative (unless you do 700 miles a day without stopping...lol)

Thanks for a good review! If it do 200 mile (320 km) in rain it’s good but I would like it to do 285 miles to be on safe side in Swedish winter when you can expect up to 30% loss in battery capacity. Charging network is not brilliant where I live and my ageing parents live 100 miles down the road if you wonder why I need all that capacity. I do like the MG5 not being a SUV and hopefully with a reasonable price tag when they will start selling them here in Sweden in October.

I bought an MG5 EV in January for this year. It is totally amazing. What a superb buy. It has a really good range and looks a million times better than the Tesla Model 3 and is MASSIVELY better built. I absolutely love this car which is superb to drive and looks really lovely, it’s a real head turner in fact.
My wife was so impressed she bought the MG ZS EV (she prefers SUV type vehicles) last week. She sold her 3 year old Kia Sportage to buy the new MG. This car too is superb and has the most amazing paint.
I would recommend the MG’s to anyone. I’ve done 4,000 miles since January 7. No problems whatsoever. I get 185 mile real range.
These cars cost half what a Tesla Model 3 does, are incomparably better built, have far better paint and finish, more beautiful interiors, better styling and are tremendous value for money.
I’ve charged ours at home, on rapid chargers at Lidl supermarkets and have also used the ‘granny charger’. I never suffer from range anxiety as this car more than meets my needs. I commute 28 miles a day, four days a week and charge once ever 5 days.
I am so very impressed by the quality of these cars. IMO they will sell huge numbers if these and deservedly so.
Incidentally, both cars are really fast! The torque is amazing.
These are 4 Tesla Model 3’s where I live. All look 5 years old and are built like British Leyland in the 1980’s. One owner, whose mother bought him it as a gift, spent ten minutes pointing out the faults to me and they are truly awful. He looked over my car enviously.....despite his having cost £48k and mine was 24k after incentives.

@@wobby1516 Fair comment. Your original post didn’t hint at these costs so I fell into the trap of thinking only of fuel costs of an ICE vehicle which are significant compared with an ev mainly charged at home. It would need a detailed analysis of James’ costs including how he charges for his time while travelling and taking into account what he can offset against tax by working from home in order to assess whether it’s financially worthwhile. And one man doing what he loves to do and working from home will undoubtedly produce different results from someone running a business which employs others and may even have the overhead of dedicated premises.

Risk of rust is the remaining concern when looking at cars such as this. I tend to buy young cars and keep them a long time and over the past 50 years have seen huge strides made by the likes of VW and BMW and even they are not perfect. Most 2001 or later VW's do not die of rust, few 2005 or later BMW have serious rust problems but how long before we can be confident the same is true for China ? At least with Dacia and Seat/Skoda etc we have experienced manufacturers overseeing the product. Same fears apply to Chinese-built Tesla model 3's
