  • Replacing a RV Motorhome Chassis Battery, Saving all your ECM info & keep your battery charged while parked or in storage.
I change my motorhome and car chassis battery every 3yrs. It’s a PM item. Chassis batteries get weak over time and you can get stranded with a dead battery, especially in the winter when it’s cold. So performing battery maintenance like this is important.
My motorhome chassis battery is responsible for powering the slides, my leveling jacks and my power steps, so there's good reason to have a chassis battery that is performing to peak performance.
There is a proper procedure for replacing a motorhome chassis battery and I’ll be covering that today, along with cover an AMP-L-Start or a TRIK-L-Start to keep your motorhome chassis battery topped off while parked or in storage.

If you disconnect the chassis battery(or cut off the switch ) when get to a campground why don't you lose all that information you were talking about. We have a round ECM OBD2 socket on ours(Diesel pusher) so that memory thing wouldn't work but I don't think we even need that. I replaced our chassis batteries 6 1/2 years ago( 2 1000 CCA Duracell batteries we bought at Sam's Club for 100.00 each) and we didn't lose any info that I'm aware of (Caterpillar engine and Allison auto transmission) . Never had a dead battery and we carry a booster just in case plus we can boost the chassis batteries with the house(I bet yours can too),or we can start the 7500 watt on board generator and charge them all up, without hook ups) That being said this will probably be the year we replace the chassis batteries. When we bought ours batteries 6 1/2 years ago the Core charge was 5.00 each, and the core charge on my Suburban battery(bought 2 years and 4 months ago was also 5.00. Dang 25.00 now, yikes Safe Travels and take care of yourself Martin. Love your videos.

When you shut off the chassis battery, you shut off power to the ECM, stereo, backup camera, and basically everything else that's powered off that battery unless your switch doesn't actually cut power to all the circuits which isn't the purpose of the switch... Turning that switch off should be exactly like disconnecting a battery terminal.

I wonder what makes the old battery worth $40?

At 6:40 mark in the video Martin corrects what is known as the core charge from $40 to $25. It’s to encourage the consumer to return the old battery to the store where purchased for recycling as there is a significant amount of lead that is in the old battery. The lead is what makes the battery so heavy. Once you return the old battery to the store, they refund the core charge to you, in this case, they refund you the $25.

It’s heartbreaking to say Martin isn’t doing well at all and is currently in the hospital.😢
