Exactly. This is how true singing sounds. This is HOW it's meant to be done. A Cappella singing is so rare today. Way too much emphasis is put on looking good and auto tune today. No real talent anymore.
I like this version the best! But the the original was actually from 1961 by a Japanese singer named Kyo Sakamoto. It was called "Ue O Muite Aruko" which I think means "I look up while I walk". Many other artists have sampled the original including, but not limited to Snoop Dogg and Biz Markie. Not to mention the numerous covers from over he years. ... That said! This one's my fav 😅
Hi Darlene, sorry for your loss. Have you heard the Japanese original? It's beautiful and the words are very different but even more poetic than this English one. th-cam.com/video/rbTsG9jrJsU/w-d-xo.html
No instruments, no flashy hd cameras, no recording Studios, and no autotune, just pure TALENT the way music is supposed to be made, id like to see todays artists try doing this without anything but their voice, then we'll see who's really talented or not.......
my sister is a huge fan i played your song at her wedding i replayed this song on repeat for her shes 10 years older than me an played this song all the time
You guys are the best. During WW2 1936- 1945 , this song reminded many of the war. My mom used to sing it to me when I was a little girl. Thank you for making this song more beautiful than it could ever be and the most special moment I ever had with my mom. God made all of you so special. Shining stars.
The original song 🎵 was from Kyu Sakamoto, the Japanese singer, who hit the #1 Billboard in the USA at the time. Please listen to the original song too.
It's all because of you, I'm feeling sad and blue You went away, now my life is just a rainy day And I love you so, how much you'll never know You've gone away and left me lonely Untouchable memories, seem to keep haunting me Another love so true That once turned all my gray skies blue But you disappeared Now my eyes are filled with tears And I'm wishing you were here with me Soft with love are my thoughts of you Now that you're gone I just don't know what to do If only you were here You'd wash away my tears The sun would shine once again You'd be mine all mine But in reality, you and I will never be 'Cause you took your love away from me Girl, I don't know what I did To make you leave me But what I do know Is that since you've been gone There's such an emptiness inside I'm wishing you'd come back to me If only you were here You'd wash away my tears The sun would shine once again You'd be mine all mine But in reality, you and I will never be 'Cause you took your love away from me Oh, baby, you took your love away from me
The Japanese version was the only Japanese song to ever hit number one in the US. It's name in Japanese means, "I look up when I walk," the US name Sukiyaki is a kind of Japanese stew that has nothing to do with the song. Coincidentally, the artist died in a plane crash.
Kyu Kyukyu did have this hit song a single in the 1960's & the DJ's who played his song said it was a good song, but wanted to know what he was singing about. In 1991 an American band called 4 PM heard this song & had the lyrics changed from Japanese to English & turned it into a hit for them & sung it very well & added a talking line or two. I hope these guys find more songs that they can do in the future. I wish these guys all the best, yes I do have your CD.
I had these guys on my radio show when this song came out, and they told the story of how the single was recorded. The lead singer laid down his vocal as a "guide" track. Just him singing and snapping his finger to keep the beat. Then the other guys laid down their parts. When they went back and listened, they realized the "guide" track he did was perfect, and they left it in. So when you listen to the record, his vocal is the first and only take.
I would like to know more about the group I'm just now coming across y'all in 2020 right before the new year. I always knew the song Sukiyaki by Taste of Honey but really start liking after I found y'all on TH-cam singing it. Where are you all from?how much success did you all have? local, Regional tell me more please
What a beautiful song, sung by true artists. What a beautiful memory for me as my baby sister discovered the song and introduced me to it. Whatever happened to 4PM? Any musical producers out there, please bring them back!!
The Japanese version was the only Japanese song to ever hit number one in the US. It's name in Japanese means, "I look up when I walk," the US name Sukiyaki is a kind of Japanese stew that has nothing to do with the song. Coincidentally, the artist died in a plane crash.
The only rubbish I'm seeing is the rocketrocket comment. This version is different from the original, some people would prefer the original and others will like this more. The original is called "Ue o Muite Arukō" by Kyu Sakamoto, go look it up and decide which you like more.
back then in the 90's (looking back... It sounded like we are a relic 🤣) in my high school years we had this acapela group coz it was... You know cool 😎 back then and we sing this song and also songs from boyz 2 men ( obviously), for the longest time by Billy Joel... Hahahahah brings back memoriesss...
I finally found this song after how many years 😭😭😭😭😭 I used Google's searching feature using humming or singing!!! 😭😭😭😭 i've been looking for this song! My brother played this once when I was in elementary...
IronGuy64 I have! I think it’s originally from early 1960s, but I don’t remember who recorded it originally Selena’s father was of Asian heritage, hence how he knew the song so well and got his daughter Selena to do a version in Spanish
The original version of this song was Japanese and came out in 1963. It was a massive world wide hit. The song here is the same tune but the words are not the same. There is a video on UT of the original with the words translated.
Rest in peace Sasuke & Sakura Sama 😢😭😭 Every day we face new challenges and problems. Today I appreciate memories and moments. Its true dogs 🐕 are mens best friend 💔
Japanese original version was the song about loneliness and happiness. Not love song! there was no word about love between man and woman anywhere in the original one. The singer Kyu Sakamoto was not a begger of love but the symbol of peace to Japanese after WW2 . The lyric altering by this guys is undesirable to Japanese.Because they are wholly misunderstanding the intention of the writer Rokusuke Ei. To translate directly, the Japanese title means "Let's go with looking up(at the sky) "
Since the original song is about peace (happiness) and this version is about love then it's a match made in heaven. Embrace it. Love and peace go together perfectly. You're causing disturbance by allowing yourself to be offended. We shouldn't look at it as changing the original song but rather creating a beautiful union of different versions of art. Cover songs and/or remakes are symbols of respect and admiration for original work!
dear friend, i think about you every time i hear this song, how cruel time is, it slowly steals all my memories of you, i can hardly remember your face, but time can never steal the memory of your love,,,,,,untouchable memories
The best I have heard from hundreds but it needs to be softer, please do it, I love the song and you did it better that anyone but the originals if you could just be softer in the romantic parts. Way to go. 👍🏼
Sukiyaki Japanese title is "Ue o muite aruko", roughly translated is "I Walk Looking Up (so the tears won't fall), performed by Kyu Sakamoto, written by Hachidai Nakamura and Rokusuke Ei . However, this English translation was written by Janice Marie Johnson lead singer and bass player of the band A Taste Of Honey. Sadly, she had to give up all writing credit to the original writers in order to get the song published and recorded. The original sounds like a Japanese cowboy swing trail song.
Just four guys and their mics. No overdubs, vocoders, lip synching, or back-up singers. Pure talent on display!
Exactly.
This is how true singing sounds. This is HOW it's meant to be done.
A Cappella singing is so rare today.
Way too much emphasis is put on looking good and auto tune today. No real talent anymore.

This is such a beautiful version. Pure raw talent!!!
Whenever I listen to this song…
Those wonderful 90s…..
Hell ya
Acapella version in the mid-90s is sooo original and cool 😊
I like this version the best! But the the original was actually from 1961 by a Japanese singer named Kyo Sakamoto. It was called "Ue O Muite Aruko" which I think means "I look up while I walk".
Many other artists have sampled the original including, but not limited to Snoop Dogg and Biz Markie. Not to mention the numerous covers from over he years.
... That said! This one's my fav 😅
I cannot believe this song now celebrates its 30th year anniversary. Sukiyaki was truly transcendent.
This was just a cover of the original from 1961 by Kyu Sakamoto, but I'm not throwing shade on these guys. They did a great rendition
These guys are amazing….but check out the original 1961 version of Sukiyaki by Kyu Sokumato. It’s timeless.
I am widow, but when I was 17 years old my husband bought me a music box with this song. I cry every time I hear it but I still love it. 😥
❤
Hi Darlene, sorry for your loss.
Have you heard the Japanese original? It's beautiful and the words are very different but even more poetic than this English one. th-cam.com/video/rbTsG9jrJsU/w-d-xo.html

I'm Japanese.
Their singing voice is wonderful. The english version of the lyrics are also beautiful...😭✨
THANK YOU 4 P.M.🙏🏻
It will be good if have the lyrics. From Taiwan.
Bring me back all the way back in the 90s
This song has produced enough tears to fill the Pacific Ocean 🌊 and back 😢
Love this so much. I had their album when I was a teenager. Such beautiful music.
No instruments, no flashy hd cameras, no recording Studios, and no autotune, just pure TALENT the way music is supposed to be made, id like to see todays artists try doing this without anything but their voice, then we'll see who's really talented or not.......
When shit was real
my sister is a huge fan i played your song at her wedding i replayed this song on repeat for her shes 10 years older than me an played this song all the time
Here 2024 so excited to have found this gem!
No auto tunes just pure raw talent 👍🏻
one of the most beautiful and emotional songs ever written..
You guys are the best. During WW2 1936- 1945 , this song reminded many of the war. My mom used to sing it to me when I was a little girl. Thank you for making this song more beautiful than it could ever be and the most special moment I ever had with my mom. God made all of you so special. Shining stars.
Flashback my memories when I was teenager listen this song on the radio. They are so incredible and this is pure a cappella
Had to play that several times. A Great song & melody.
Beautiful! So authentic, clear and crisp❤
COOL, Damn, i was 24 years old in 1995 , and just learning about this group today in 2022 at age 51, lol

Same here and I’m 60+
The original song 🎵 was from Kyu Sakamoto, the Japanese singer, who hit the #1 Billboard in the USA at the time. Please listen to the original song too.
It's all because of you,
I'm feeling sad and blue
You went away, now my life is just a rainy day
And I love you so, how much you'll never know
You've gone away and left me lonely
Untouchable memories,
seem to keep haunting me
Another love so true
That once turned all my gray skies blue
But you disappeared
Now my eyes are filled with tears
And I'm wishing you were here with me
Soft with love are my thoughts of you
Now that you're gone
I just don't know what to do
If only you were here
You'd wash away my tears
The sun would shine once again
You'd be mine all mine
But in reality, you and I will never be
'Cause you took your love away from me
Girl, I don't know what I did
To make you leave me
But what I do know
Is that since you've been gone
There's such an emptiness inside
I'm wishing you'd come back to me
If only you were here
You'd wash away my tears
The sun would shine once again
You'd be mine all mine
But in reality, you and I will never be
'Cause you took your love away from me
Oh, baby, you took your love away from me
I didn't know this was a Japanese song. I remember hearing this back on the radio back in the 90's all the time.
The Japanese version was the only Japanese song to ever hit number one in the US. It's name in Japanese means, "I look up when I walk," the US name Sukiyaki is a kind of Japanese stew that has nothing to do with the song. Coincidentally, the artist died in a plane crash.
I remember this from my high school days. I heard the original and wanted to find this version. Thanks for sharing!
Just wow. A quartet to match this beautiful love song, my heart just melts
very underrated group. harmony on point and each member had the capability of singing lead. tight knit group is my guess.

I wish these guys all the best, yes I do have your CD.
You're wrong, a taste of honey covered the original version and 4pm covered that song.
Flashback to my freshman year in Japanese level 1 class listening to this song in class doing work at the same time. Good old time.
ayyachris man we did this in my japanese class too? Is sukiyaki just some right of passage?
What a Beautiful and enduring legacy , Kyu Sakamoto left behind !
I had these guys on my radio show when this song came out, and they told the story of how the single was recorded. The lead singer laid down his vocal as a "guide" track. When they went back and listened, they realized the "guide" track he did was perfect, and they left it in. So when you listen to the record, his vocal is the first and only take.
Impressive. it's hard to stay on key on keep the timing constant without any instrumentation to guide you.
Amazing song- I hope someone covers this classic one day
1981 version

These guys are tough, I love this
They sound just like thier record version great voices one of my fav groups of all time
The note the lead singer hits in 2:09 is absolutely beautiful.
Thanks TH-cam for the suggestion.. Wow! Memories!
Those were some fun times. We enjoyed performing live.
I would like to know more about the group I'm just now coming across y'all in 2020 right before the new year. Whose idea was it to perform that particular song?
Love this song and the way these guys did it. 90s rnb was ace.
What a beautiful song, sung by true artists. What a beautiful memory for me as my baby sister discovered the song and introduced me to it. Whatever happened to 4PM? Any musical producers out there, please bring them back!!

You do have to educate US audiences. This version is rubbish.
The only rubbish I'm seeing is the rocketrocket comment. This version is different from the original, some people would prefer the original and others will like this more. The original is called "Ue o Muite Arukō" by Kyu Sakamoto, go look it up and decide which you like more.
