Adam, I think there might be some confusion between "worst" and "slowest". I've been fortunate enough to drive all the Cosworths and they actually improve with each iteration. The Sierra is the worst in my experience, as being a hatch and from the 80s, the shell just doesn't have the torsional rigidity (I also went from Sapphire to Sierra back to back, so the Sierra felt a backward step in addition to how far more dated it felt inside, as well as the lack of torsional rigidity). The Sapphire with it's metal parcel shelf and saloon based monocoque, is much more rigid and everything about it feels far more modern than the Sierra, but sadly it loses the direct and "flighty" steering of the 3dr, as the Sierra with it's homolgation origins has better designed front hub knuckles (which was felt to be too "nervouse" for modern execs that the Sapphire was aimed at LOL). Back in the day it was a common upgrade to fit the front hubs from the Sierra to the Sapphires (and was something I did to mine). The Sapphire 4x4 just has the reassurance of 4wd, but subsequently feels slower than the 2wd version, due to the power that the transmission absorbs (and has the same chocolate gearbox issues of the Escort with the budget MT75 gearbox that Ford chose to use, which limits tuning without expensive transmission upgrades). The Escort has some addditional chassis reinforcing that makes it even more rigid than all the previous cars, but is even slower than the 4x4 Sapphire due to it's homologation aero, and this is why it I think it gets the reputation for being the "worse". I think the myth has been skewed over the years from "slowest" to "worst". Hence why the 2wd Sapphire is lauded as the "sweet spot". It is more torsionally rigid than the Sierra, and is faster than both the later models due to not having the power sapping 4wd transmission, nor the aero of the Escort (which boasts one of the first ever production cars to have geniune negative front and rear lift from it's aero package). The aero is actually that good (or bad, depending on your view LOL), that above 100mph, the Sapphire's with equivalent power, will start to significantly gap the Escort due to the aerodynamic drag this car has. So to sum up - out of all the cars though, the Escort drives the best and feels the most modern, but is also the slowest. It takes over 400bhp in an Escort to match a 350bhp Sapphire, which is perhaps why it is deemed the "worst"......
They were shit heaps back then and they are shitheaps now and these sad people are paying 100k plus for these abhorrent vehicles..... What a sad world we live in 😮😅😅😅😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I hope you enjoy your new red Escourt Cossy Adam, and i hope Paul done you a good deal on it? You looked pretty happy when I saw you driving it to be fair 😂
Great video Adam. I had a Escort Series 2 back in the early 2000's. Tuned etc around 200BHP. I sold if and bought a big turbo Escort Cosworth. In standard form the Escort was slower than the Series 2, my brother had a 2wd Sapphire which was better. After a lot of parts and Stage 3 is changed the car completely and best RS I owned. Happy DayRS!
I will always have a soft spot for the Escort Cosworth. I remember as a young teen hearing screeching tyres & then seeing a MK 2 cavalier SRi come smashing through a blokes fence, we rushed over to see what was going on. The young fellas in the Cav were looking rather sheepish at their off road antics & were probably thinking of making a heisty retreat. Then the owner of the now broken fence pulls out of his driveway in his Mallard Green Escort Cosworth & parks it as if to say 'if you run you won't outrun this'. Needless to say details were exchanged at that point 😂.
My dream car as a kid had a dealership Ford brochure from 96 spent hours looking at the cosworth pages, the mirrors are different on the big turbo model too. Also really like the mk5 r/s 2000 from this era. Looking forward to seeing you build your dream car fella 👍
I'd say for me, the cossies is as fun as it gets driving in your enthusiast car, had one in my twenties, so I guess its a bit nostalgic aswell. The car just makes you feel like a absolute hooligan 😂 I have a mustang GT manual-17 bought new, it makes me feel the same way 🤟
What a lovely bloke to lend you his escort cosworth this brings back good memories I remember going into a garage when I was younger in my 20s and seing M reg 1995 mk 5 escort cabriolet in plumb purple it was impulse buy but I loved it spent more time polishing it and looking after it than driving it 😂 until one of my crazy exs paid some one to torch it was devastated 😭😭well Adam can’t wait to see yours 👍🏽👍🏽
My sisters boyfriend Body Builder Bob came to see us one day and they pulled up in of them!!... the little display that showed up which doors were open on the dash was the best thing I've ever seen! Gorgeous cars. 👌
Building one might be a challenge, the Cozzie was built on a Sierra chassis which is different to the normal MK5 Escort. Might mean you'd have some trouble with fitting an interior or body panels. You can get cosworth style bodykits for the MK5 but might look squashed compared to a real cosworth.
Adam, be very careful with your money. Mk5 escorts are the epitomy of 90's rust buckets. The escort cosworth is even worse with its extensively hand built shell that was not "dipped" in paint prior to sealing and refinishing. From new they have unprotected seams and welds everywhere. Any of these cars that have been driven in the rain (without being extensively rust proofed beforehand) will have extensive rust throughout. If you want one save up and carefully buy one with extremely low milage and that has been kept in a dry environment (and that doesn't mean kept in the average garage). That car that Paul had will be hiding a multitude of sins - not an "honest" car. Extensive chassis and floorpan corrosion througout. Those rust bubbles that Paul pointed out will all be coming from the inside. That car will require hundreds and hundreds of hours by Someone like your man Steve who works with Paul. It is probably beyond economic repair and will never be a nice example. Count your blessings and realise it wasn't for you. If i were you i would concentrate on preserving your 3 door and building the engine. The last thing you want is to have something which is as rotten as a pear festering away in your garage. Hold fire and save up - the right car will come your way some day. I hope you take this advice coming from someone who has worked tirelessly repairing rust on escort cosworths.
That's exactly what I thought run a mile. It's covered with shutz and has already had extensive welding. The sills have been done, this means it was rotten and once they've gone in one place it will be all over. I've worked in a body shop and if you've not pulled rotten panels off and seen underneath them at the rot starting in inner sections, bubbling out from spot weld seams etc etc it's hard to explain to people. If the sills have been done I'd want to know how well, was the car properly rust proofed when the rotten paneks were off etc etc. I bet the car is full of filler, the bubbles as you said are coming from the inside out and once you see a bubble it's way worse on the unseen part of the panel. Also all that floor welding. Just no no no it could be a terrible case of don't meet your hero's. That all said Adams bought it now and I like him and ultimately he's a car enthusiast who loves spending hours on his cars so he could pull it to bits get the shell stripped and any nastys put right by a car restorer and restore it, it's not beyond the realm by any means but will be a lot of work and money at some point as I think it may need some skilled panel work to get to any rot weld it etc and panel beat back right and paint. Theybare worth alot of money good so he's not polishing a turd by any means. Let's see how it goes when he gets scraping and uncovering the floor pan etc. I hope it goes well for him and it's not really rotten to the core and all the work done prior is good also depends what he's paid for it at the end of the day.
@@justbreakingballs I think that unless you do this type of work people just don't understand. The other thing is (and again having worked extensively on rotten fords from the 90's) the steel that was in them was of very poor quality, sheafs and sheafs of rust everywhere. Ah well, as you say we wish him well, but he has for sure bought a pup.
Lovely part of the world, just down the road from me. I had the pleasure of being a passenger in a "de-tuned" Escort which I think was mid 300s but was capable of over 400. That thing was brutal for the time. I get the nostalgia but for me I feel like Japan came along and blew cars like this away
I bought a red escort cosworth in 2011 and have never driven it on the road only an odd time to take it out of the garage and I love them too. My car win shows and very low mileage but always thought of buying another to drive on good days
I have been fortunate enough to own a Escort cossie for 12 years, tuned to approx 550bhp by MADevelopments around 2010. Great car, like any car it had its pitfalls, ill be honest i part exd my 4x4 saph cossie for it, hindsight i should of stayed with the saph tbh, when tuned to the same power the saph was quicker, however the Escort captures the dream, it was my dream car back then. Massively iconic is the Escort ( follow your dream, i always do ) hence now have a 700bhp GTR 35
My pal owned a big turbo escort cossie in blue back in 1998, he drove it like he stole it, he even offered it to me for 8 grand but i didn't have the money
I remember seeing one of these on the ferry going over to the IOM TT. Can't remember exactly which year but it must've been '93 or '94 because I had a '93 Honda Fireblade at the time. We came up behind the Cossie one afternoon going up the mountain out of Ramsey. I've no idea what their top speed was but I past it pretty easily on the Mountain Mile and never saw it again. It cornered like it was on rails but I expected it to be a lot faster in a straight line. They fetch crazy money now, as do Mk1 Mexicos.
That's a load of crap you're talking Adam. I had an 88 sapphire Cosworth and then a 93 4x4 sapphire Cosworth. I was lent a 93 big turbo escort for one week, and it made both sapphires feel like rickshaws.
I still have my first R S Cosworth Saphire, rear wheel drive full leather interior. I've actually given it to my 23 yr old daughter. Why ? because I'm a great dad !
my dad's got an escort mk5 RS 1995 and its the best car ever,he has put an sebring euxaust and it sounds clear and great,he is a car guy too,the car is always clean and in the inside and outside,he has put on a racing streering wheel it matches perfectly with the car.byebye
Great minds bud, although im not in a position to buy one yet haha. This must be on the cusp from big to small turbo as its got big turbo wing mirrors. Gorgeous car.
My cousin had 2x Saphs and I did love them (more in later years when you appreciate them). But he bought a K plate escort one and I did not like the driving position compared the the Saph. It would put me off buying one
The escort cossie will always be a cult classic. I ve been involved in the cossie game for over 30 years. I have owned and broken over a hundred cars. I still have my own escort, which has been in my workshop since 1998. It's never seen the daylight since. My own opinion is that the escort is the worst driving cossie followed my the 3dr sierra cosworth. The best was the sapphire 4x4. You could drive it for miles, so comfortable, not like the escort, drove terrible on the road. As a rally car, it was something else.
Little tip shut the windows the air con works even better 😂 Seriously what a car. Would be looking in the rear view at that whale tail all the time. And those wheels make the originals look clunky. Why didnt we buy one when they were 12-14k? 😮
The reason certain people say they are horrible to drive is because they put on monster turbos and tune them beyond their capabilities. Ford are not daft when they design a car and spent millions developing them so unless your a World rally team leave the things alone. 😊
They built a competition car and de tuned it for the road, he'd not be so impressed with a bog standard big turbo car, i should think a standard rs500 is the same, not as good to drive as the smaller turbo ones on the road. Need tuning a little bit (not much) to justify the big turbo, but still its a big turbo and not well suited to anything but going flat out even with a bit of fettling.
They look great (compared to a saph) but no where near as fun as a 3dr or 2wd saph. At least that was my experience 15 years ago. Now I’m older I’d probably be happy with one just for it’s iconic status rather than the drive.
Not the ford way, but certainly the cheapest and most Reliable way. Is make a Cosworth Replica and stick a K24 engine in it. Cosworths have now gone to the point prices have become ridiculous and not worth value for money people buying these cars for 50k plus is ridiculous. a replica ticks all the boxes and is a working man's Cosworth you will gain just the same respect and people will understand why you have not spent 50k plus on a ford escort!
To everyone asking if I have bought a Red Escort Cossie I have absolutely no idea what car you are talking about 👀
😂
Passenger seat for drivers seat and visa versa
Good on ya pal. Looking forward to the content.
If you say so Adam
😂😂😂😂 red ones are faster

I think as you get older enjoying cars like this is less about the speed and more about how they make you feel.
Bang on
He’s give you fair play, so fair play back to him like 👍
Correct. Its a passion and it doesn't matter how quick your car is, there is always someone quicker.
100% I'd swap the sound , feeling and grin factor of these cars for any modern day dsg shitbox .
“It’s my daily” Now that’s what I call living the life, what a guy.
My absolute dream car, ppl may laugh but if i won the lottery an escos would be my favourite car to buy
Been out with Wayne and this car a couple of times, what a car it is. Absolute gem. 👍🏻
I hope you enjoy your new red Escourt Cossy Adam, and i hope Paul done you a good deal on it? You looked pretty happy when I saw you driving it to be fair 😂

I wouldn't worry if the whole country said the cosy was a bad driving car, just look at it,, I could sit and look at that all day long....

I bought a red escort cosworth in 2011 and have never driven it on the road only an odd time to take it out of the garage and I love them too. My car win shows and very low mileage but always thought of buying another to drive on good days
Awesome mate, great meeting at euros the other day!! 👍🏻
Whens your video of the red one coming out aha
Don't mater what the engine. Ford's of that era used to dissolve in the rain.
Well done on selling the sapphire Adam looking forward to the new project car 😉
The Escort Cosworth oozes the Fibonacci series with its curves. Stunning motor.
What a sweet sounding 4pot, The best in mho. Cheers for the great Video Adam. All the best pal
Seen a nardo grey escort on church road south gosforth yesterday and a white 3 door sierra. Bus couldn't keep up 😂
That’s absolutely stunning
Im sure i can see red in the headlights behind you and you got a glint in the eye either your lass up the dove or you got the cossie 😂
best driving cosworth on standard spec

I still have my first R S Cosworth Saphire, rear wheel drive full leather interior. I've actually given it to my 23 yr old daughter. Why ? because I'm a great dad !
when she puts her foot down in the cold wet roads she will give it straight back to ya
This looks like a large turbo, thought the small turbo had the small mirrors, I had a 95 N plate and that was small turbo.
You af to have the compomotives on em an I love the monte carlo escorts jewel violet or manard green
quality kidd 💯💪
my dad's got an escort mk5 RS 1995 and its the best car ever,he has put an sebring euxaust and it sounds clear and great,he is a car guy too,the car is always clean and in the inside and outside,he has put on a racing streering wheel it matches perfectly with the car.byebye
Great video 👌🏻
First drive😂 bro you been missing out i drove my first cossie when i was 17
I used to own this car wish I’d never sold it, glad to see it’s been looked after tho brilliant car 👍🏻
I had confirmation of your latest purchase a week ago, just put the rest out of their misery 😂
That's the redline sapphire cozy 4x4.
I'd love to see you do a Review of the Eirly 90s Granada Cosworth's on your channel. Tho one of my uncles had a Ghia version
I used to own an escort cosworth, gt30 turbo and engine built by Harvey gibbs. Didn’t like it tbh but best looking car I’ve owned
Never heard anyone saying that the escort is the worst driving cossie. Who said that?
I always thought the Escort Cosworth floor pan was 4 inches shorter than the Saph🤔
The wheelbase on a Escort Cosworth is a inch longer than a standard Escort, one way to tell a replica is looking at the front wheel placement
Loves that air con 😂
At the end, whats all the red reflection in your head light. Could be wrong.
Gearboxes are the same as sapphire just a different prop bracket
Back in the day there was a lad called Browny from Sunderland had a Q reg Escort Cossy, was proper.
Cool story bro
@@Franz_gibletlol
sooo, what was it like when you nailed it off camera...
roll on next episode young man...
I was very disappointed with the Lux one that l owned that’s for sure !
1st thing I would do is change that horrible steering wheel, I had one back in the day
Oof, there's a key 'tell' on that dial that tells me it's a clone Submariner from one of the good factories. I hope you didn't get scammed?

great car very cool. i think you find the people that post up moaning about them not being the best drive are the ones that dont own one lol
I've always wanted one 😍
Did they make a Ford Focus cosworth Adam sure I remember like 300 black ones were made or something ???
How much one of these set you back?
Those lights look gash.
Isn't the 6-degree rmodified ream beam the solution for the Escort Cosworth handling?
I had a mallard green one bought for 10k in 2008 if I new they where going to blow up on price would of never got rid of it 😢
Same here bought it for 9k sold it for 9.5k , only sold it as wasn't using it much, should have just left it in the garage for 10 years
When do we see your new purchase
3 main cosworths , no mention of the lotus ?
I think I need subtitles for the last few minutes there Adam. 😂. Lovely cars. Can’t go wrong with Compomotive TH. I had them on my E30 M3. 😊
Personally id go for 17 not 18s but they are the best wheels for these things, look straight out of 90s wrc.
dunno why but you remind me of joe pasquale lmao
Alloys are awful and the headlight conversion. Should have kept original
Is this Wayne Hutchinson’s?
I am Gen X... and I don't care how good or crap it is (!). I want one more than my own skin. It was an icon and a highly desired thing
Has it got Air con? 😂😂😂
guessing the drivers seat is from a passenger seat
love escort cosworth. And color if i bye cossie is black or imperial blue🥰
They look great (compared to a saph) but no where near as fun as a 3dr or 2wd saph. At least that was my experience 15 years ago. Now I’m older I’d probably be happy with one just for it’s iconic status rather than the drive.
That car is mint Adam😊😊😊
Aww bless ….. like a kid in a sweet shop tell you what if I win the euro this weekend I’ll buy you it 👍
need pov view of driving escort cosworth there only like 1 video of em
Like you haven’t just bought one Adam 😏
Shit didnt even press it
Not the ford way, but certainly the cheapest and most Reliable way.
No banging or crashing about them "bang" hahahahah
Love the wheels
Exciting First Drive in the Escort Cosworth! Let's find out if it lives up to the hype or not!
