@@simons4474 Yes from what I recall, in the Sun, that green shines so nice, but you got the benefit of the colour looking a dark mean moody black in lower light! I think its bloody amazing!!!!
Two cars we never got in the states and I wish we did. Those are exactly the type of cars I like. Hot rodded versions of volume type cars that are understated but still look like they mean business.
I remember when the Carlton Lotus was released Ayrton Senna tested one and said it was the best road saloon car he had ever driven. He was the F1 champion at the time.
The escort Cosworth is on a shortened sierra sapphire 4x4 cosworth chassis with some escort panels on top to make it look like an escort. Hence the longitudinal engine
Wow, that Lotus Carlton is gorgeous, remember the police had to buy one to catch up with them, escort is cool but the interior always reminded me of my BT van
Surely the real comparison would have been the Escort Cossie against the Vauxhall Calibra Turbo? Both of similar horsepower and speed 0-60mph, both 4x4 and the Calibra Turbo also had a Cosworth head which looked pretty much identical to the Ford Cosworth apart from the redtop Vauxhall insert.
Meanwhile, back in reality, the XJ6 saloon is far more beautiful and elegant than the Carlton- which is a lump by comparison- regardless of how fast it is. There are any number of saloons which have nicer lines than the tarted up Carlton.
I’d take the Big Green/Black one. A real bit of Motoring History………… So is the Cossie, but I remember there were questions raised in the House Of Commons about the Lotus Carlton at the time.
Love the Escort Cosworth but for me this is the wrong version being a late small turbo T-25 that just doesn’t have the go to match the show and the Ford ECU won’t let you do very much about it atall. There are quite a few few around claiming to be 300hp but they’re not, the standard car is 224hp and the limit of tuning on a stock ECU is 280. The earlier big turbo car with Weber Marelli management is the one to have as it’s true to the original concept and is relatively easy to tune to 360 bhp which is when the car comes to life, and it’s reliable at that level as that’s whereabouts Cosworth originally pitched it, but they knew Ford wouldn’t accept that and they didn’t as at the time Ferrari were selling the 348 with 300bhp ! For Ford to release a Ferrari killer was unthinkable so they had Cosworth de-tune the YB to just under 230bhp 😂. Plus of course, when you pop the bonnet of the big turbo version you get to see the iconic cam cover as opposed to the rather plain version with the plastic cover that hides the coil packs on the small turbo car. If this white small turbo really is in with a chance of making £75k at auction then that has got to be largely due to its motorsport heritage……for that reason if one is ever going to bring in £100k I would say that car would have to be one of the first 2000 made that were supplied with a water bladder under the rear seat. That was for the intercooler water injection system on the works cars, it wasn’t connected on the road cars but had to be there to comply with the homologation rules 😊
All very true. I would add that this car is actually not "standard". You cannot "slightly lower" a stock suspension. The exhaust has been changed (good luck finding an original one, I do have one), and God knows what else, need to look under the bonnet. Mine is a large turbo one, original owner from new at 320Bhp (1,5 bars of boost). I would never part with it until I can't drive it anymore, still have a few years left. I has around 30K miles on it and although I own other great cars this is my GoTo car for the sheer joy and satisfaction it provides, addictive like a drug.
@@st939car has Koni suspension and springs, fitted about 3 months after car was new, alongside the wheels. Original shocks and springs come with the car along with a brand new set of wheels. @@BobsYirUnclemy father has a 3 door cosworth since new Absolutely pristine and stock July 86 it’s was registered so it’s a very very early example Bought with his redundancy money after the miners strike from what I can remember (only 11 years old) Anyhow Iv got to agree with the 1st comment though if I’m honest Them 16v XE20 twin cams where quick and certainly not 130 stock, more 150 even slightly more Just handled like a dog 😂 Mine didn’t last 6 months
It would have been at the time as most people would not have any idea what it was, you have to remember there were tons of senator's and carlton's on the road and some would have been modified and people would get confused thinking the Lotus Carlton was just a modded normal carlton. They were also super rare at 320 Lotus Carltons made, there are more omegas but not in the UK.
Cosworth over the Lotus id have as that Lotus would not keep up with the Escort on a track , on a straight line the Lotus would win a race but corner speed is more important , also i live right next to that racecourse sadly Ascots not a nice place to live nowadays too much antisocial behaviour on the high street and if you do own a nice car it usually gets nicked as Bracknell and Slough are not far away lol
I don't rate that modified Cosworth. Lowered, debadged clocking up the miles on the non factory wheels. I would go buy a factory original car that is aging on proper ride height and wheels with the correct badging all it's life.
See my comment earlier, original shocks and springs come with the car as do a brand new set of wheels, can be put back to standard in a couple of hours
The Carlton is iconic in the uk because MP’s actually talked about getting it banned 😂 The cossie was quick in 1986 but not by 1990 , plenty of cars could keep up with them. The Carlton was In a completely different league
That Lotus Carlton is the bee’s knees. I want one!
Nothing against the Cosworth, but it's the Lotus Carlton all day, every day for me, with its muscular 3.6 twin turbo. Yes please.
Ermmm no
And the colour is so nice. Super dark green but mostly looks black until you really look.

Corvette gearbox and speedo that goes up to 180mph because it needs to. Phenomenal.
Absolutely love all Ford Cossie’s 👌,,, but that Lotus Carlton is one Evil Fecker of of a car 😈👌, Love em both 👍
Dream garage pair 👌🏼🚀🚀
Vicki Butler Splendidson
Yeah I think shes so sexy
I reckon VBH is just like the Ford Capri Injection- *'GOES LIKE LIGHTNING!'*
She's still better looking than that old slapper Tiffany Dell. 🤣
LOTUS CARLTON is the DADDY. Great looking, great performance, great soundtrack and this one looks bang on!! I'm with you VBH !!

2 absolute classics of the 90s love seeing TGE behind the wheel of the Cossie 👍
Love that lotus Carlton …. But boy do I want a cossie!…. See you all 14th September @ascot

Loved this episode! Great comparison between the two. The Cosworth has the edge though!
Vicky never gets any older
Escort cosworth is breathtaking 😍
Cosworth is lovely needs spacers to fill the arches though and mudflaps to finish it off imo still looks incredible 😮
Cozzy owner is a genius. Nice one mate!
The Escort for me....All day and forever
Best wishes from Brisbane,Australia.
Needed a Lancia Delta there
Wow, that Lotus Carlton is gorgeous, remember the police had to buy one to catch up with them, escort is cool but the interior always reminded me of my BT van
Carlton all the way, would have loved one back in the day. Had the Gsi 3000 24v, de-catted and chipped, should have kept it.
Yes Tom (TGE)
Look at you lad 👍
Lotus Carlton in my eyes anyday

I remember seeing rough LC's for
That’s exactly what I payed for mine…I still have mine
Still to this day the best looking saloon ever 👌- almost bought one in the late 90s.
Rims on that Cosworth are awful 😢

Lotus Carlton all day.
15:12 seems like VBH wanted to be up to what those 2 backseat passengers were up to in the cossie 🫣
Vicki drives a Mustang Mach E? What? I'm a huge fan of Vicki cos she used to have great taste in cars and had a lovely Mk2 Golf GTi...same as me! 😉

Lotus Carlton "a sleeper" In what world??!!!
It’s a Carlton 🤷♂️

Lotus Carlton and Buick Grand National are in a same bracket kicking more expensive Italian exotics

These both fall apart every month. Casual cars as I call them, designed to use just 15-20 days in a year.
Americans: wtf are these?
Throttling classics indeed. Driven at walking speeds, this is just lame.
Its not about speed coz if is the charlton quicker but its an ugly car escort beautiful car iconic everyone remembers cossie not charlton
