@@Chickenz663 You do know Xbox dev mode exists? If Microsoft didn't want people to use homebew and emulators, they wouldn't have added a service that allows the use of unsigned code. Microsoft created dev mode to keep the home brewers and emulators happy so they don't jailbreak their hardware, and you would have to be a damn fool not the realize that.
If Sony had not removed OtherOS from the PS3 (and if they had allowed OtherOS full access to the GPU in the system) then there would have been no reason for those who wanted to run homebrew, emulators etc on the system to investigate the copy protection or try to jailbreak the thing (which lead to the discovery of the flawed encryption and the full hacking of the system)
I bought a Vita day 1, the memory card is the single reason i never played it. Now i have it modded i love it, it's a great portable console that Sony killed with their own greed... PSP would have gone the same way had there not been adapters to use normal SD cards.
@@mrcaboosevg6089 Same here.....once it got hacked and you could use the SD2Vita adapters it really opened things up. They were just stupid as they should have gone microSD. Thankfully they did make those SD adapters for PSP but hacking really opened it up because the UMD sucked, was slow, noisy and ate up battery power. Once you hacked it and could overclock it and run games from memory card it was a 100% better system. I have big hands though and the stick placement on both PSP and Vita just didn't work well for me, once the PSP was hacked though I played a lot of PSX games on it using the dpad.

i personally wanna hack into my xbox 1 just because i dont use it anymore at this point and i badly want to try to get it to run some other OS. linux? raspbian? anything really. just something thats useful to me and not a paperweight at this point. but alas, i dont know anything about hacking

This is such a deeply cultural thing, it's fascinating. In the US, media piracy is a thing that's deemed immoral, but ultimately not a big flaw. In Europe and especially Russia, it's not even considered immoral, while in Japan, admitting to media piracy is akin to admitting to theft, lol.
As far as I remember there was another hack for the 360, which affected the DVD drive only. One had to remove the drive from the console, put it in a PC and change it's firmware so it would report burned DVDs as retail ones.

This is what I did and it worked wonders. You only needed to have a double-layer DVD burner.
I have an rgh dual nand demon chip alongside a flashed dvd drive on my Xbox 360. It allows you to boot to a retail nand and play backups (patched through abgx 360) online (never got banned) and if you held down the sync button when the system is off the light would switch to red and you could boot to the hacked nand and run homebrew and run all kinds of awesome stuff. Was amazing
Bare in mind, no system is unhackable. It’s as he said, microsoft made it entirely pointless to want to unless you wish to pirate, no other defence. I do personally think we’ll see an exploit happen soon when the console has been completely cut off, although the 360 servers are still up so that should speak when an xbox one exploit will happen, let alone series consoles and beyond & it’s already likely that exploits exist & just are remaining private since it’ll be entirely pointless to release it.

You can’t download said games if you haven’t already and since the platforms servers are closed down, you can’t set that account as home without being logged in first or better yet, what will you do if Xbox or Playstation decide to start delisting games not only from the their online store, but also from your library? Amazon and Playstation are doing those said things when it comes to movies and shows without offering refunds, can’t give these companies credit when they are legit stealing from you.

I did a few jtags myself but then the RGH hardware mod came and was a bit easier to install although you had to buy the board.....He failed to mention the pirate only mod for the X360 though which was the DVD hack. It took longer to take the damned thing apart than to do the firmware flash on the drive.

You see, here's the thing.. what Microsoft and to some extent Sony learned is that renewable security is needed at the software and hardware levels to combat piracy. One alone would not be enough. However, what I think most people are missing, is that if an exploit gets these consoles into a jailbroken mode with jailbreak hardware/firmware/software to make it so, AND the pirates port the titles (mainly the offline ones) to this jailbroken firmware to specifically work on this type of mod.. there is no teeth to the renewable security.. and it will still be a 1:1 hack.. the hardware is in an offline state (at least to the the phone home mode) and the mod allows ported & hacked games to work. This will indeed happen, IF there is a demand and incentive to take things to the next level.. which eventually there will be or probably already has... it's just the 2022 version of the Captain Crunch decoder ring... also, sometimes the console's security get compromised by leaks from the developers part way through the release's lifetime.
It's worth mentioning that patented a system that traces back any leak to it's spurce within the company so unless the leak was like the recent one, it'd very hard to leak something unnoticed.

You’d really only be able to do packet editing & other things if you’re lucky. But you’d need to find exploits etc. which varies. Don’t know if it’s possible to do at all though. Probably illegal for all I know. But I don’t know how much sense it’d make to run all files components & everything else off a server. Or the efficiency etc. just speculation really.
You forgot to mention that every title is ran in its own Hyper-V virtualized environment. Meaning that with such memory and address randomness even if an exploit was found, Hyper-V pretty much makes sure its a one-time gig. Also if comprised, most of the apps, games or even the OS would likely realize this and cease to function.

Xbox relies on a key-hierarchy to decrypt its XVDs that depends on the hashes of all lower level code. This means that even if you are able to boot a modified XVD, games won't boot. This checking is done on a separate processor from the one that runs the hypervisor, kernel, apps, games, .... 2. Xbox Live includes attestation from the security processor of how the system booted. This means that when connecting to Xbox Live the device proves not only what software it's running, but what versions and if it has been modified. This means that a hacked console wouldn't be able to connect to Xbox Live. This is a large part of how they disincentivize it.

The Sega CD has *no security*. This is because CD burners in 1991/1992 were basically unknown to the general user because at the time they were priced upward of $10,000 and it wasn't until the HP 4020i recorder in 1995 that you could purchase a recorder for less than $1,000.
@@gamepad3173 Yeah, I also remember a period of 1-2 years where if you had one of those early CD burners, you could sell mixed CDs at schools and colleges for $20 a piece.
Same with the 3DO (no security) and the Dreamcast they pretty quickly found an exploit in the audio CD player to make game discs bootable. Yamaha had one of the early affordable CD Burners. I had one, they were SCSI and used a trey to hold the disc. It was awesome and if I remember was around $400 when I bought it in the early 90s. I got my $$$ worth out of it burning a ton of games for those earlier systems, PSX, Video and Music CDs....ahh the good old days.
I don't think Xbox will be hacked , I think they did an awesome job with their ecosystem if you don't want to buy an Xbox you can buy their games on pc or just buy a Xbox pass on pc , plus as you said the fact that it can run retroarch and all types of emulators up to ps2 with no problems is just awesome.
Great content but there's ways in the past where rgh users had spoofed their firmware to play online without updating. It was done by various homebrew apps. Now I agree as a software developer that no one wants their work to be patch by Microsoft after all the time put into it but even if they did patch it with a update. The update alone wont be too much of a difference in the code. Meaning shouldn't take long after update release to make a new jailbreak
Honestly... just the challenge is enough incentive to hack a console. I dont know that dev mode was the solution. Then again I suppose it was because in reality it would have been hacked already if the community really wanted to hack it. The forced updates can be overridden once you gain access to everything. Then it would be treated just like ps4 where you can spoof updates and/or have modded updated firmware in order to keep the system up to date. Honestly as 360 hardware gets older, the incentive to hack the one or series xbox will grow. I'm honestly surprised it hasn't been attempted more already but it will eventually happen imo. I dont really even game anymore but really enjoy modifying consoles. I would love to have a modded xb1 unfortunately I'd never figure that out by myself lol

I grew up with a ps3 and a wii. Most likely would've never guessed the Xbox One couldn't be jailbroken. You taught me something new today. If you ever have a chance, could you make a video about the Wii Mini... doesn't even have to be modding; if it is, the exploit is over Bluetooth which has been very annoying to reach success.

the only thing that I can think of is if you used an internet connection that had the update website blocked then the console would not be able to update every time it booted and therefore be vulnerable to exploits.
Yea but with it blocked your console will brick it self because the console code requires the update, I would think that blocking total internet access would be a work around but im sure xbox has a way to prevent you from using the xbox till the update is applied.
I also wonder if the move to online stores, removal of disc drives, and game "rental" has gone a lot of the way to disincentivise pirates. If you price a game at £70 brand new, a lot of people can't afford that. But if you make it available for £10-£15 a month along with a bunch of other stuff, then the market is far more accessible for the "easy" route and significantly smaller for the time and effort of a pirate mod.
Xbox One/Series X not being jailbroken is the only reason why I never bought one. The moment it gets jailbroken one day (if it happens), I am going to get one. Imagine hacked backwards compatibility managed by the community of dedicated fans. So many potential performance improvements for Xbox 360 games plus the best way to upscale and play original Xbox games. I really hope one day it will be possible.

I don't understand your reason why you don't want to buy an Xbox. You don't need any jailbreak to play Xbox 360 games on it. What I read from your answer is only that you buy the console if you can play pirated games on it. Everything else is nonsense, since you can install all emulators with the DevMode (and things like RetroArch also in retail mode) and also play almost all Xbox 360 games on it. Nobody puts stones in the way of your project. Just your desire for piracy. AND: If you don't own original Xbox 360 games, you can still play them on a hacked Xbox 360. Xbox 360 games have gotten so cheap it's not even worth downloading. I rather suspect that you are dealing with hacked Xbox One / Series games. So just say it. Admit it. You want Xbox Series X game piracy. EDIT: Since the Xenia emulator is public available, there is even not excuse fot that by saying that only official backward compatible Games are supported. Every xbox 360 game even with mods is supported.
Dont forget that there is a model of the Xbox 360 that is currently unhackable. The 2015 versions of the Xbox 360 can't be hacked because the reset pin on the main chip is unaccessible and some other solder points are not available for it, making the Xbox 360 E, specifically the model from 2015, the first retail disc based console to survive any kind of hack attempt made till this day... Well.. I'm not sure if hacking the disc drive would allow it to read backups, but i hope that you get my point.
There were two different boards used in the 360E - the early production units used a slightly modified version of the Corona motherboard used in the late 360 slims, and they are hackable. The later production used a "Winchester" motherboard with a new reduced size CGPU chip and no method is currently known for hacking them. Even the DVD drive hacks are unavailable because they used later Liteon DVD drives where the backdoors used to read out the drive key have been patched, and since the the main CPU can't be glitched either there is no way to get the drive key out of the KV either. @@yea3643

The Xbox 360 is still hard as hell to mod. Way beyond my skill level. I bought mine from Masnart. This thing is a masterpiece. It has virtually every physical and digital title that released
Actually the 360 isn't that hard to mod. The difficulty varies a little between series, but the system is so old now and there are many videos out there now, as well there still some modding services around. But depending on what you want to do with it, the modding community pretty much has that console down pat, you can buy mod kits that aren't that difficult to install. I myself installed a virtual dvd drive that lets me play the game iso's right off an external storage drive. But in all honesty, I spend far more time on my PC playing Steam games these days. I wait until games have a little age on them and then pick them up for next to nothing and add them to my library. Even current games can be had at serious discounts if you just do a little looking.
@@phillipmarrin2593 Yeah eshop sales have really lowered the incentives to hack in general. Now (holidays) is a great time as all the major eshops have steep discounts on anything 1 year or older. Between used disc and eshop sales if you are just patient you can play just about anything, other than Nintendo games for dirt cheap.
Yeah this is where we are at in the 1st world territories. There just isn't as much incentive to pirate because of great options like Gamepass (which is $15 us full price but can easily be had for 1/2 that a month by shopping ebay). Its sort of the IOS model as well which is there is just so much free content to be had on your phones/tables why bother with jailbreaking.
@@skylargrey5973 yup, it even adjusts prices based on region (at least where I'm from, in eastern europe, gamepass is 7$ a month and our minimum wage is slightly less than 400$). So why would I pirate when they offer such an affordable service? I was so shocked to see that some games have adjusted prices too, like Hi-Fi Rush being around 8$ as well when it's 22 euros on steam. Most people pirate here for that reason (we have a huge pirating site called filelist, it's invite based only and everyone I know has access to a shared account at least). I really wish people would start adjusting prices based on region. I really cannot afford 60$+ games, but if they were adjusted for our wages (so like 15-20$) I would buy them no problem.
Exactly! the best combat to piracy is to offer a better service than the pirates. when spotify and netflix hit the scene people couldnt be bothered pirating because for a few bucks a month you didnt get virus', everything was top quality and it streamed fast. now there is the problem of too many services and they are all kind of shooting themselves in the foot. I think microsoft knows this and is actually kind of helping the consumer if they pull off the games as a service on all consoles thing.
So-called e-fuses worked that way (via electrically overloading components) back then in the 80s and the 90s. Nowadays it's all digital, those bits (called OTP bits = one-time programmable) are programmable as any other bit on flash, EEPROM, whatever... except it's an one-way process - if you set a bit, you can't unset it later without physically milling a chip and exposing the die to UV, risking physical damage to the die itself.

It's a war of attrition sometimes. The Sega Saturn was eventually hacked 20 years later. There is always going to be new tech, methods and discoveries unforeseen by corporations in combination with the Xbox One eventually have dropped support, the likely hood of it being hacked naturally goes up.
I think the main reason why there is not a hack is because pirates have no reason to do that. Xbox already offers a bunch of games with Xbox pass and the console has a option to basically run emulators so that part also won't try to fo anything there. Most modders and hackers want to either go for playstation or pc, and in the case of playstation they have found ways but is because they want to hack that system and the only reason why Sony has survived this attacks is because they pay when they found any failures in the system
The only problem? Microsoft gave people the ability to play a huge amount of 360 games…. BESIDES any old forza games pre horizon 1 and any of the 360 need for speed games! I have no clue why considering some of those games sold SO WELL it would be free money for Microsoft.
Na the reason is exclusive titles they don't have good titles like Sony, so hakers don't put efforts, because of demand and supply, Sony also knows that their console soon to be ready for jailbreak when jailbreak comes the console price starts boosting. So sony got profits. 😅
As you concluded that the latest Xbox could not be hacked because it makes regular updates mandatory and has been built with customised silicon with security in mind and by the time, a hack is found, the console is not produced any more or reaches its end of life, I reckon that the hacking can still find the workaround for e-fuses, drilling holes in the right spots even before connecting the console to the Internet, eventually finding a hack and root for the console.
the question is more, why do you want to hack an shitty console where all games could be played on a common PC without issues? There is no reason to get a Xbox just to jailbreak it to play games illegally, when all the games can be bought legit on PC
@@ExTremZero Red dead redemption 1, forza horizons 1 and 2, skate 1 2 and 3 and more. Don't forget the homebrew. It's not about the piracy, but the freedom having a modded console offers. At least one and series have dev modes that allows people to run homemade games and software on them. Also I am still mainly a pc gamer too but I like to bring that freedom of pc gaming to my other devices as well. And forza horizon 1 is not really playable through the emulator yet
Thank you for making this video. I always wondered why there was never a Jailbreak for the Xbox One/Series X. However I wouldn’t be surprised if someone has jailbroken the Xbox One and they maybe are just keeping it private to ensure Microsoft won’t know about that way it won’t get patched but for now we can just speculate.

Pirates have always benefited from super smart people who just wanted to run homebrew. You take away their motivation to do so (like with dev mode) and they won’t dedicate time to helping pirates out.
That's why the 3DS's case is very intresting, one of the rare if not the only case where piracy lead the way for homebrew. I encourage you to look into it if you're curious

I feel like this is a bit of a shot in the foot for the preservation of latter-Xbox games. Sure, most of their good games have PC ports that’ll hold up as long as there’s no massive hardwire or Windows paradigm shift, but bad games like ones made for the Kinect (ESPECIALLY the Xbox One-exclusive Kinect games, the Xbox One X can barely even play those games) are in serious danger of being lost to time.
yeah, anything that releases as an exclusive to these consoles is 100% becoming lost media someday don't think there will ever be an Xbox One emulator either and when the Series S|X become retro and their stores close down, the only way to get new games for them would be going after physical copies of the games (rip Series S), but even then, DLCs and updates would be lost anyway well, not that there are that many exclusives to begin with, but I guess if any of these games gets a bad PC port, the not-badly-ported version would be lost just like the exclusives
I can't even name an xbox one kinnect game....lol....that experiment failed quickly after they tried to launch it with Kinect and the market said uh no thanks. There were a few fun things on x360 kinnect....but not much, I remember liking fruit ninja for about an hour.
@@marcoalves9029 well I doubt X Box will ever have this issue since due to backwards compatibility, Xbox is now an emulator for previous gen console games anyway. The only real issue would actually be getting the game, since a lot of the older gen games have been taken out of market and are no longer purchasable digitally, yet if you have the disk it’s not at all a problem. I had to buy a physical copy of Arkham Origins from some random website, so I could play it on my Xbox One and that worked completely fine. But if you already had bought the game digitally, you would be able to play it.
The developer mode was a step in the right direction but its also stupid because you pay for access to it but then people have been locked out of it for not sending updates of your work to Microsoft. How ever people have found ways to run emulators outside of developer mode now.
The Xbox One isn't unhackable, nothing ever is. What Microsoft cleverly did was up the ante on security and then remove 90% of the motivations and reasoning behind trying to crack said security. I am sure however, that once these things go away and the Xbox one is all but history in Microsoft's books, we will see many an exploit for it

I bought a series s a half a year ago with the mind set of setting up emulators on dev mode. However, when I found out you can run emulators on retail mode, I was very happy. I can play old and new games without consistently changing the console from retail mode to dev mode. So I'm wondering how it was possible to get the emulators on retail mode?
Someone would have to publish a UWP emulator on Windows. Windows UWPs *can* run on the Xbox though I’m pretty sure there’s a few extra hoops to get it to populate on console
Dev mode is so op and honestly one of the reasons I got a Xbox over a ps 5. It Litterally can run everything up to the 360 perfectly. It's more backwards comparable with Sony totals than the actual ps 5
It's so sad that the xbox one has never been hacked, eventually the last xbox one will die out, as all hardware does, and future generations will never be able to play the huge variety of wonderful console exclusives. Piracy has been, and continues to be the only way to preserve systems, and I don't see that changing any time soon.
Piracy shouldn't be the way, but corporations seem resistant to consistent backwards compatibility, and sometimes refuse to port classics even when they've refused backwards compatibility. That's what's so sad. Companies have made it hard to keep your old, classic libraries without the old consoles, and getting around that almost always forces us, the players, to either fork over tons of money or break the law if we don't want to let go of the old libraries. That said, I advocate for a movement to rectify this and to push towards aomething like a core, mega console that can emulate all the discontinued oldies. Tony Chen, the head of the security for Xbox said that on the XBOX one, as soon as the attacker finds exploits and it gets release. That they will just patch it, now...since the XBOX one is at the end of it's life cycle, people won't have to update their console anymore and they can play whatever games they want, if Microsoft wants, they can just shut down the xbox one's store and just keep the Series X store open.

Sure 360 stores are still up and fully available. Head of security will always say they will patch a exploit if its found. But like the 9.00 jailbreak. On ps4. People will just update to that firmware and stay on it. Especially since people can backport games to older firmware.

I addition on Xbox One Microsoft had a policy to not trust any data that wasn’t coming from an encrypted source, so you couldn’t do a man in the middle attack either. Microsoft have done a great job in keeping their console safe. 💚
This will reflect back negatively in the future. I will use the original Xbox as an example, it has currently 3 major hardware problems, the clock capacitor, the IDE HDD and the optical drive, they're all ticking time bombs. The CC can be solved without exploiting the system, you rip it out the board before it leaks and if you want, replace it. The other 2 can only be solved through modding, replacing the HDD is possible if the console is hacked, which will allow you to rip your discs into your new SATA hard drive. This will make it possible to continue playing original Xbox games in the future even if the optical drive goes bust, plus you can clone/backup your new modded HDD so that you can easily swap out drives without losing your content. The Xbox One and Series consoles are the antithesis of preservation, if there is ever a problem or are abandoned by Microsoft they will turn into bricks.
@@Manic_Panic It is a response from Microsoft to stop piracy. Both OG Xbox and the 360 had this problem. If Xbox was to continue, this was a good and unobtrusive solution for the end user and made sure that developers would want to release their game on Xbox. With regards to Xbox being abandoned by Microsoft and their servers shut down, I am more worried that a global war would be the cause and then other issues would be more important.
Just pick up two Xbox One X's or Series X's or One X and one series X and put the one of the X's on dev mode and have the other one on standard no need to hack it when you just got to pay a small fee to unlock dev mode you can do whatever you want there with the exception of modifying the software titles made for the console That's what I did I have two Xbox One X's one's on dev mode I have all kinds of unsigned code and games on there while the other one has normal stuff. That's not to say that there won't be some kind of breakthrough eventually in the future I'm sure there will but dev mode is a pretty good deal honestly.

I think the most important part was giving disincentive to hack the system in the first place. Unless somebody is going to finance hacking attempt, nobody is going to waste their time to hack Xbox One. Given enough resources and especially ability to do hardware mods would definitely allow hacking the hardware.

Personally I don't think there's a need to jailbreak Xbox one or the series s and x. The fact that both these systems exclusives will be on pc is a win. What this means is that u can get all these games for free.
It also means that as long as xbox console players opt out of cross play, on a system setting level, then we've got the most secure online gaming space.

There could be a way to access system falls through the Kodi app which was originally used to put applications for watching movies and stuff and possibly if someday they could use that as an exploit because you can get into your systems files a lot differently and do different things with that application
Where there's a will there's a way. The back and forth that was seen with the Xbox 360 portrays this perfectly, mod-update-mod-update, so on. It's only been pushed more underground now, between the legalities changing and more stringent antipiracy policies.

@@Chickenz663 You do know Xbox dev mode exists? If Microsoft didn't want people to use homebew and emulators, they wouldn't have added a service that allows the use of unsigned code. Microsoft created dev mode to keep the home brewers and emulators happy so they don't jailbreak their hardware, and you would have to be a damn fool not the realize that.
If Sony had not removed OtherOS from the PS3 (and if they had allowed OtherOS full access to the GPU in the system) then there would have been no reason for those who wanted to run homebrew, emulators etc on the system to investigate the copy protection or try to jailbreak the thing (which lead to the discovery of the flawed encryption and the full hacking of the system)

I bought a Vita day 1, the memory card is the single reason i never played it. Now i have it modded i love it, it's a great portable console that Sony killed with their own greed... PSP would have gone the same way had there not been adapters to use normal SD cards.
@@mrcaboosevg6089 Same here.....once it got hacked and you could use the SD2Vita adapters it really opened things up. They were just stupid as they should have gone microSD. Thankfully they did make those SD adapters for PSP but hacking really opened it up because the UMD sucked, was slow, noisy and ate up battery power. Once you hacked it and could overclock it and run games from memory card it was a 100% better system. I have big hands though and the stick placement on both PSP and Vita just didn't work well for me, once the PSP was hacked though I played a lot of PSX games on it using the dpad.

As far as I remember there was another hack for the 360, which affected the DVD drive only. One had to remove the drive from the console, put it in a PC and change it's firmware so it would report burned DVDs as retail ones.
This is what I did and it worked wonders. You only needed to have a double-layer DVD burner.

I have an rgh dual nand demon chip alongside a flashed dvd drive on my Xbox 360. It allows you to boot to a retail nand and play backups (patched through abgx 360) online (never got banned) and if you held down the sync button when the system is off the light would switch to red and you could boot to the hacked nand and run homebrew and run all kinds of awesome stuff. Was amazing

Bare in mind, no system is unhackable. It’s as he said, microsoft made it entirely pointless to want to unless you wish to pirate, no other defence. I do personally think we’ll see an exploit happen soon when the console has been completely cut off, although the 360 servers are still up so that should speak when an xbox one exploit will happen, let alone series consoles and beyond & it’s already likely that exploits exist & just are remaining private since it’ll be entirely pointless to release it.

Modding the 360 back in 08' was a weekend project when I had the time. Making sure I had all the right parts and pieces. It was a learning experience.
I did a few jtags myself but then the RGH hardware mod came and was a bit easier to install although you had to buy the board.....He failed to mention the pirate only mod for the X360 though which was the DVD hack. It took longer to take the damned thing apart than to do the firmware flash on the drive.

You see, here's the thing.. what Microsoft and to some extent Sony learned is that renewable security is needed at the software and hardware levels to combat piracy. One alone would not be enough. However, what I think most people are missing, is that if an exploit gets these consoles into a jailbroken mode with jailbreak hardware/firmware/software to make it so, AND the pirates port the titles (mainly the offline ones) to this jailbroken firmware to specifically work on this type of mod.. there is no teeth to the renewable security.. and it will still be a 1:1 hack.. the hardware is in an offline state (at least to the the phone home mode) and the mod allows ported & hacked games to work.
This will indeed happen, IF there is a demand and incentive to take things to the next level.. which eventually there will be or probably already has... it's just the 2022 version of the Captain Crunch decoder ring... also, sometimes the console's security get compromised by leaks from the developers part way through the release's lifetime.
It's worth mentioning that patented a system that traces back any leak to it's spurce within the company so unless the leak was like the recent one, it'd very hard to leak something unnoticed.

You’d really only be able to do packet editing & other things if you’re lucky. But you’d need to find exploits etc. which varies. Don’t know if it’s possible to do at all though. Probably illegal for all I know. But I don’t know how much sense it’d make to run all files components & everything else off a server. Or the efficiency etc. just speculation really.
You forgot to mention that every title is ran in its own Hyper-V virtualized environment. Meaning that with such memory and address randomness even if an exploit was found, Hyper-V pretty much makes sure its a one-time gig. Also if comprised, most of the apps, games or even the OS would likely realize this and cease to function.

1. Xbox relies on a key-hierarchy to decrypt its XVDs that depends on the hashes of all lower level code. This means that even if you are able to boot a modified XVD, games won't boot. This checking is done on a separate processor from the one that runs the hypervisor, kernel, apps, games, ....
2. Xbox Live includes attestation from the security processor of how the system booted. This means that when connecting to Xbox Live the device proves not only what software it's running, but what versions and if it has been modified. This means that a hacked console wouldn't be able to connect to Xbox Live.
This is a large part of how they disincentivize it.

The Sega CD has *no security*. This is because CD burners in 1991/1992 were basically unknown to the general user because at the time they were priced upward of $10,000 and it wasn't until the HP 4020i recorder in 1995 that you could purchase a recorder for less than $1,000.
and if I remember, back then rich people would be dropping a grand for a CD burner like it was no ones business.

Same with the 3DO (no security) and the Dreamcast they pretty quickly found an exploit in the audio CD player to make game discs bootable. Yamaha had one of the early affordable CD Burners. I had one, they were SCSI and used a trey to hold the disc. It was awesome and if I remember was around $400 when I bought it in the early 90s. I got my $$$ worth out of it burning a ton of games for those earlier systems, PSX, Video and Music CDs....ahh the good old days.
I don't think Xbox will be hacked , I think they did an awesome job with their ecosystem if you don't want to buy an Xbox you can buy their games on pc or just buy a Xbox pass on pc , plus as you said the fact that it can run retroarch and all types of emulators up to ps2 with no problems is just awesome.

Great content but there's ways in the past where rgh users had spoofed their firmware to play online without updating. It was done by various homebrew apps. Now I agree as a software developer that no one wants their work to be patch by Microsoft after all the time put into it but even if they did patch it with a update. The update alone wont be too much of a difference in the code. Meaning shouldn't take long after update release to make a new jailbreak

Honestly... just the challenge is enough incentive to hack a console. I dont know that dev mode was the solution. Then again I suppose it was because in reality it would have been hacked already if the community really wanted to hack it. The forced updates can be overridden once you gain access to everything. Then it would be treated just like ps4 where you can spoof updates and/or have modded updated firmware in order to keep the system up to date. Honestly as 360 hardware gets older, the incentive to hack the one or series xbox will grow. I'm honestly surprised it hasn't been attempted more already but it will eventually happen imo. I dont really even game anymore but really enjoy modifying consoles. I would love to have a modded xb1 unfortunately I'd never figure that out by myself lol

I grew up with a ps3 and a wii. Most likely would've never guessed the Xbox One couldn't be jailbroken. You taught me something new today. I also wonder if the move to online stores, removal of disc drives, and game "rental" has gone a lot of the way to disincentivise pirates. If you price a game at £70 brand new, a lot of people can't afford that. But if you make it available for £10-£15 a month along with a bunch of other stuff, then the market is far more accessible for the "easy" route and significantly smaller for the time and effort of a pirate mod.
Piracy is an economics issue so they seemed to have learned at least somewhat how to make it economical for more people

Dont forget that there is a model of the Xbox 360 that is currently unhackable. The 2015 versions of the Xbox 360 can't be hacked because the reset pin on the main chip is unaccessible and some other solder points are not available for it, making the Xbox 360 E, specifically the model from 2015, the first retail disc based console to survive any kind of hack attempt made till this day... Well.. I'm not sure if hacking the disc drive would allow it to read backups, but i hope that you get my point.

There were two different boards used in the 360E - the early production units used a slightly modified version of the Corona motherboard used in the late 360 slims, and they are hackable. The later production used a "Winchester" motherboard with a new reduced size CGPU chip and no method is currently known for hacking them. Even the DVD drive hacks are unavailable because they used later Liteon DVD drives where the backdoors used to read out the drive key have been patched, and since the the main CPU can't be glitched either there is no way to get the drive key out of the KV either. @@yea3643

The Xbox 360 is still hard as hell to mod. Way beyond my skill level. I bought mine from Masnart. This thing is a masterpiece. It has virtually every physical and digital title that released
Actually the 360 isn't that hard to mod. The difficulty varies a little between series, but the system is so old now and there are many videos out there now, as well there still some modding services around. But depending on what you want to do with it, the modding community pretty much has that console down pat, you can buy mod kits that aren't that difficult to install. I myself installed a virtual dvd drive that lets me play the game iso's right off an external storage drive. But in all honesty, I spend far more time on my PC playing Steam games these days. I wait until games have a little age on them and then pick them up for next to nothing and add them to my library. Even current games can be had at serious discounts if you just do a little looking.

@@phillipmarrin2593 Yeah eshop sales have really lowered the incentives to hack in general. Now (holidays) is a great time as all the major eshops have steep discounts on anything 1 year or older. Between used disc and eshop sales if you are just patient you can play just about anything, other than Nintendo games for dirt cheap.

I think the gamepass plays a big role in that too. The ability to play recent game at a low price is what would motivate me to stay legal.
Yeah this is where we are at in the 1st world territories. There just isn't as much incentive to pirate because of great options like Gamepass (which is $15 us full price but can easily be had for 1/2 that a month by shopping ebay). Its sort of the IOS model as well which is there is just so much free content to be had on your phones/tables why bother with jailbreaking.
@@skylargrey5973 yup, it even adjusts prices based on region (at least where I'm from, in eastern europe, gamepass is 7$ a month and our minimum wage is slightly less than 400$). So why would I pirate when they offer such an affordable service? I was so shocked to see that some games have adjusted prices too, like Hi-Fi Rush being around 8$ as well when it's 22 euros on steam. Most people pirate here for that reason (we have a huge pirating site called filelist, it's invite based only and everyone I know has access to a shared account at least).
I really wish people would start adjusting prices based on region. I really cannot afford 60$+ games, but if they were adjusted for our wages (so like 15-20$) I would buy them no problem.

Exactly! the best combat to piracy is to offer a better service than the pirates. when spotify and netflix hit the scene people couldnt be bothered pirating because for a few bucks a month you didnt get virus', everything was top quality and it streamed fast. now there is the problem of too many services and they are all kind of shooting themselves in the foot. I think microsoft knows this and is actually kind of helping the consumer if they pull off the games as a service on all consoles thing.

So-called e-fuses worked that way (via electrically overloading components) back then in the 80s and the 90s. Nowadays it's all digital, those bits (called OTP bits = one-time programmable) are programmable as any other bit on flash, EEPROM, whatever... except it's an one-way process - if you set a bit, you can't unset it later without physically milling a chip and exposing the die to UV, risking physical damage to the die itself.

There is always going to be new tech, methods and discoveries unforeseen by corporations in combination with the Xbox One eventually have dropped support, the likely hood of it being hacked naturally goes up.
I think the main reason why there is not a hack is because pirates have no reason to do that. Xbox already offers a bunch of games with Xbox pass and the console has a option to basically run emulators so that part also won't try to fo anything there. Most modders and hackers want to either go for playstation or pc, and in the case of playstation they have found ways but is because they want to hack that system and the only reason why Sony has survived this attacks is because they pay when they found any failures in the system
The only problem? Microsoft gave people the ability to play a huge amount of 360 games…. BESIDES any old forza games pre horizon 1 and any of the 360 need for speed games! I have no clue why considering some of those games sold SO WELL it would be free money for Microsoft.

As you concluded that the latest Xbox could not be hacked because it makes regular updates mandatory and has been built with customised silicon with security in mind and by the time, a hack is found, the console is not produced any more or reaches its end of life, I reckon that the hacking can still find the workaround for e-fuses, drilling holes in the right spots even before connecting the console to the Internet, eventually finding a hack and root for the console.
the question is more, why do you want to hack an shitty console where all games could be played on a common PC without issues? There is no reason to get a Xbox just to jailbreak it to play games illegally, when all the games can be bought legit on PC

@@ExTremZero Red dead redemption 1, forza horizons 1 and 2, skate 1 2 and 3 and more. Don't forget the homebrew. It's not about the piracy, but the freedom having a modded console offers. At least one and series have dev modes that allows people to run homemade games and software on them.
Also I am still mainly a pc gamer too but I like to bring that freedom of pc gaming to my other devices as well. And forza horizon 1 is not really playable through the emulator yet

Thank you for making this video. I always wondered why there was never a Jailbreak for the Xbox One/Series X. However I wouldn’t be surprised if someone has jailbroken the Xbox One and they maybe are just keeping it private to ensure Microsoft won’t know about that way it won’t get patched but for now we can just speculate.

Pirates have always benefited from super smart people who just wanted to run homebrew. You take away their motivation to do so (like with dev mode) and they won’t dedicate time to helping pirates out.
That's why the 3DS's case is very intresting, one of the rare if not the only case where piracy lead the way for homebrew.

People have hacked the console. They're just keeping it secret how they did it. Look at Call of Duty leaderboards.

Developer mode did more for stopping hacking than anything else.
I feel like this is a bit of a shot in the foot for the preservation of latter-Xbox games. Sure, most of their good games have PC ports that’ll hold up as long as there’s no massive hardwire or Windows paradigm shift, but bad games like ones made for the Kinect (ESPECIALLY the Xbox One-exclusive Kinect games, the Xbox One X can barely even play those games) are in serious danger of being lost to time.

and when the Series S|X become retro and their stores close down, the only way to get new games for them would be going after physical copies of the games (rip Series S), but even then, DLCs and updates would be lost anyway

I can't even name an xbox one kinnect game....lol....that experiment failed quickly after they tried to launch it with Kinect and the market said uh no thanks. There were a few fun things on x360 kinnect....but not much, I remember liking fruit ninja for about an hour.
@@marcoalves9029 well I doubt X Box will ever have this issue since due to backwards compatibility, Xbox is now an emulator for previous gen console games anyway. The only real issue would actually be getting the game, since a lot of the older gen games have been taken out of market and are no longer purchasable digitally, yet if you have the disk it’s not at all a problem. I had to buy a physical copy of Arkham Origins from some random website, so I could play it on my Xbox One and that worked completely fine. But if you already had bought the game digitally, you would be able to play it.
The developer mode was a step in the right direction but its also stupid because you pay for access to it but then people have been locked out of it for not sending updates of your work to Microsoft. How ever people have found ways to run emulators outside of developer mode now.
That's something I'll have to check out on my series X (and maybe run wired PC controllers with the Brook Wingman XB2).
All you have to do is buy an old Xbox one VCR and never hook it up to the Internet ever again.
The Xbox One isn't unhackable, nothing ever is. What Microsoft cleverly did was up the ante on security and then remove 90% of the motivations and reasoning behind trying to crack said security. I am sure however, that once these things go away and the Xbox one is all but history in Microsoft's books, we will see many an exploit for it
It is easy to say that it is ONLY because MSFT lets you run homebrew, but that never stopped hackers from hacking. The truth is that MSFT has made two unhackable consoles in a row and the hacker community is embarrassed enough by this to make excuses for their lameness. I bought a series s a half a year ago with the mind set of setting up emulators on dev mode. However, when I found out you can run emulators on retail mode, I was very happy. I can play old and new games without consistently changing the console from retail mode to dev mode. So I'm wondering how it was possible to get the emulators on retail mode?

Dev mode is so op and honestly one of the reasons I got a Xbox over a ps 5. It Litterally can run everything up to the 360 perfectly. It's more backwards comparable with Sony totals than the actual ps 5

It's so sad that the xbox one has never been hacked, eventually the last xbox one will die out, as all hardware does, and future generations will never be able to play the huge variety of wonderful console exclusives. Piracy has been, and continues to be the only way to preserve systems, and I don't see that changing any time soon.
Piracy shouldn't be the way, but corporations seem resistant to consistent backwards compatibility, and sometimes refuse to port classics even when they've refused backwards compatibility.
That's what's so sad. Companies have made it hard to keep your old, classic libraries without the old consoles, and getting around that almost always forces us, the players, to either fork over tons of money or break the law if we don't want to let go of the old libraries.
That said, I advocate for a movement to rectify this and to push towards aomething like a core, mega console that can emulate all the discontinued oldies. Basically, PC gaming and emulation, but unquestionably legal and with corporate support.
Companies could even still profit off of it by making the games available for purchase from an E-shop!

Tony Chen, the head of the security for Xbox said that on the XBOX one, as soon as the attacker finds exploits and it gets release. That they will just patch it, now...since the XBOX one is at the end of it's life cycle, people won't have to update their console anymore and they can play whatever games they want, if Microsoft wants, they can just shut down the xbox one's store and just keep the Series X store open.

Sure 360 stores are still up and fully available. Head of security will always say they will patch a exploit if its found. But like the 9.00 jailbreak. On ps4. People will just update to that firmware and stay on it. Especially since people can backport games to older firmware.

Only reason why I want to jailbreak my xbox one, is to unlock some FH2 achievements that are unlockable because the game was sunset and the servers shut down.
I addition on Xbox One Microsoft had a policy to not trust any data that wasn’t coming from an encrypted source, so you couldn’t do a man in the middle attack either. Microsoft have done a great job in keeping their console safe. 💚
This will reflect back negatively in the future. I will use the original Xbox as an example, it has currently 3 major hardware problems, the clock capacitor, the IDE HDD and the optical drive, they're all ticking time bombs.
The CC can be solved without exploiting the system, you rip it out the board before it leaks and if you want, replace it. The other 2 can only be solved through modding, replacing the HDD is possible if the console is hacked, which will allow you to rip your discs into your new SATA hard drive. This will make it possible to continue playing original Xbox games in the future even if the optical drive goes bust, plus you can clone/backup your new modded HDD so that you can easily swap out drives without losing your content.
The Xbox One and Series consoles are the antithesis of preservation, if there is ever a problem or are abandoned by Microsoft they will turn into bricks.
@@Manic_Panic It is a response from Microsoft to stop piracy. Both OG Xbox and the 360 had this problem. If Xbox was to continue, this was a good and unobtrusive solution for the end user and made sure that developers would want to release their game on Xbox.
With regards to Xbox being abandoned by Microsoft and their servers shut down, I am more worried that a global war would be the cause and then other issues would be more important.

Just pick up two Xbox One X's or Series X's or One X and one series X and put the one of the X's on dev mode and have the other one on standard no need to hack it when you just got to pay a small fee to unlock dev mode you can do whatever you want there with the exception of modifying the software titles made for the console That's what I did I have two Xbox One X's one's on dev mode I have all kinds of unsigned code and games on there while the other one has normal stuff.
That's not to say that there won't be some kind of breakthrough eventually in the future I'm sure there will but dev mode is a pretty good deal honestly.

I think the most important part was giving disincentive to hack the system in the first place. Unless somebody is going to finance hacking attempt, nobody is going to waste their time to hack Xbox One. Given enough resources and especially ability to do hardware mods would definitely allow hacking the hardware.

Everyone I know who hacks consoles simply doesn't want to spend so much money on them to begin with. And everyone I know is switching to PC because they are tired of the always online bullshit. Personally I don't think there's a need to jailbreak Xbox one or the series s and x. The fact that both these systems exclusives will be on pc is a win. What this means is that u can get all these games for free.
It also means that as long as xbox console players opt out of cross play, on a system setting level, then we've got the most secure online gaming space.

There could be a way to access system falls through the Kodi app which was originally used to put applications for watching movies and stuff and possibly if someday they could use that as an exploit because you can get into your systems files a lot differently and do different things with that application
Where there's a will there's a way. The back and forth that was seen with the Xbox 360 portrays this perfectly, mod-update-mod-update, so on. It's only been pushed more underground now, between the legalities changing and more stringent antipiracy policies.
I remember jtags and rghs people paying almost 1,000 a year for Xbl kvs and stuff like that mw2 and mw3 modded lobby’s were the days I remember getting into a modded lobby and getting max prestige best moment ever never got banned never paid nothing that was just crazy
