You should never unplug any electronic device for a good 10 seconds after shutdown. A lot of devices have fans that run until the units are completely cooled and unplugging it will cause the fan to stop the cooling process… especially true for toaster ovens!

You can buy external fans as well, and plug the fan into a wall outlet and the fan will suck the hot air out faster and keep your series S alive so much longer.

    • @jlovee2211

I tried external fans for my series x, it works but only for the first 30min because it doesn’t spin ass fast as the default fan, so when the Xbox is running a hard game the default fan will start to spin faster then the external fan so at that point the external fan will be holding it back

I’m curious with the monitor thing. One, where do you plug it into the Series S to power it up? And two, that is probably what happened. If you had one of those like 120hz, 4k, 60 fps high fidelity type monitors, those need a lot of power. Just curious because unless you’re out in the woods or something, definitely plug that into a regular outlet. Interesting 🤔

The series S is awesome, the value and quality is just amazing, when playing from a distance there is almost no difference to the big consoles, anyway the series x is more powerful and everyone who wants the the extra power for the little difference in performance and look of the games has my sympathy. But the series s holds up way more at the end of the day when it comes to just enjoy the games with friends or alone in a gaming setting. It fits everywhere, living room, at garden party’s with a projector, in the bedroom, or or or. Series s is the value pack and the x is the high end pack. Most of my friends don’t even understand the high end quality and would not notice if they’d play on a series s, but they need the stats. And that’s ok. But in my opinion the series s is the real masterpiece and winner of this generation. Besides Nintendo but they are in their own planet.

My only gripe with the Series S is that fan under the black vent doesn't seem to spin fast enough to vent the hot air fast enough. It's like this on all the Series S consoles I have seen. That fan acts like a 900rpm non-PWM fan. Doesn't move enough air.

You probably had a monitor that went over the recommended max for power draw from the USB port. I think for the Xbox it’s like 4.5 W/5V at 900MAH. Your monitor was probably pulling more than that and overheated/blew a fuse/burned out the contacts on that USB port, sending a signal to the power supply, saying it needs to shutdown to protect itself.

Just Subscribed. Love my Series S, I think using a surge protector may also help, I had one of my Pioneer Laser Disc unplugged from surge protector and directly plugged into the wall, and a surge broke the laser disc, so I've since learned to only plug into surge protector, which sometimes stops some consoles like Wii U consoles to work sometimes, but it'll protect your console from any power surges. Great advice about third party external drives, I ended up buying the SeaGate Expansion Card for my Series S even though it's a lot more expensive compared to regular external harddrives.

if you plugged it directly into the wall there is a good chance that a brown out or black out (e.g. a power surge) from the grid is what killed your xbox, not the peripherals. A good quality surge protector from a reputable company is a great way to prevent power surges from zapping your console to death. that being said i agree with the idea of limiting peripheral usage for example get a monitor that uses its own external power cord to power itself and use a external hard drive with its own dedicated power cord is a good idea because There is a good chance Microsoft didn't test the new xbox with power-drawing peripherals that use lots of energy that might cause a problem on some models better not to find out the hard way which one it is. Treat your xbox gently

Which is why I have a rigid surge protector mounted to the bottom of my desk. Only thing plugged directly into the wall is my rgb setup and my surge protector. Monitor. System. Router. I would recommend holding the power button for 10 seconds before removing the power cord. I got into the habit with the OG Xbox one, as holding the power button for 10 secs clears the system cache. Clear the cache will also fix a lot of system issues. Also Ive got a external usb c 3.1 drive(in a custom inclosure with a firecudda SSHD), a usb hub, connected to the kvm switch on my 4k 120 monitors, as well as an LED light strip… been using external drives and led strips since the OG Xbox one and have no issues. My Xbox one s and series s are set up similar minus the KVM switch. So what more than likely happens is your external monitor pulled too many WATTS from the USB port and shorted something in the power supply.

This tip is important for everyone to know. Recently I had a controller update so I did it and also updated the Xbox one controller with Bluetooth as well. Both had every button register NO input except for the Xbox button. I had to hard power off the system to get them both to work. Luckily I have a media remote as well but that didn't help to play a game so this was super important to remember and I did it as a last ditch effort to fix them before getting support.

Yap the quantity of heat and the first days this electronic burning smell it worried me a lot. Not letting me enjoy the machine. But now the smell is gone, it's hot yet on the black cover, but fresh on the side bottom one, I advise using only flat horizontal because of that. The gane that makes it really hot is flight simulator. But never I felt performance problems it's been perfect. Excited to see the next month's.

No my friend. The problem was not drawing to much power from the series S.. If you used a simple hdmi cable to the laptop not a problem.... You used USB... USB output roughly 5v.. You were pushing voltage ⚡ into the series S. That's what fried it. You had the 3rd party out putting roughly 5v. Your series S was outputting 5v... Both devices sending voltage ⚡ into each other. Unfortunately the series S lost the fight... TH-cam the coder. He will fix it. A mobile phone takes power. It doesn't output power. So charging with USB is OK. Cool. You connected two devices outputting voltage!!

If you think your series S died because of powering external devices directly from it, then the console has indeed design issues. Driving or powering anything, regardless of how much power it draws, should not cause any problems, because modern electronics detect such cases and simply don't allow it. The external device should not start.

I 100% agree that the Series S is an incredible console! In fact, if it came with a disk drive I would probably go as far to say that it is the best console ever made. Sure it doesn't reach the resolutions of it's big brother, but on a 1440p screen it looks amazing! And even the upscaled 4K ( Which I play it on ) looks great! Yes it doesn't have a disk drive, yes it isn't as powerful as the Series X or PS5 but, The small sleek design, virtual silence and faster SSD speed then the Series S & PS5 make it a fantastic console for the price. P.S I highly suggest getting the 1TB version over the 512GB. In my country there is literally only a $50 difference between the two, and the 1TB is black which I personally think looks far better.

I’m 99% positive that none of the things you mentioned caused you series s to not work. With things like power draw and how power is distributed to and from a video game console it has many safe guards that protect it from push to much power out and pulling in. What probably happened is a power surge from home to console. Even when using a surge protector you can still get enough of a surge to damage the stuff plugged into it. I can’t be 100% sure of that without taking it apart myself but I’d be willing to bet it’s as simple as replacing power supply or even the cmos battery.

Ive had my Xbox one S and Series X plugged into a quality brand name surge protector since they were each new.

Maybe if your house is older and doesn't have true grounds all the way back to the panel and ground rod. Most older houses only have the Feed(Blk) & the Nuetral(wht). Sometimes people will make a ground jumper from the outlet to the metal box. But if the box isnt bonded/grounded all the way back it doesn't mean anything..
Also all new construction for the past 10 or so years now in the USA, every bedroom has to have an AFCI Breaker feeding it. So in a way thats another device for monitoring the power and ground for shorts or interruptions inline with the power feed to the Xbox, that can't just simply be removed, by code

It’s been over a year and a half since I tested the Apple TV and Disney+ apps on the system so updates may have fixed these issues, but I am worried the accidental unplug while on may have damaged a chip in the system. I once had a One X that I unplugged while I had a Blu Ray on pause (I was arguing with my brother that night) and afterwards, I would get a random stutter while watching a Blu Ray!

I play on a 43inch 4K TV and I'm so impressed with the series S being able to upscale games to 4K because YES the PS5 is a fantastic native 4K BEAST but damn the series S is a damn good console. image quality aside what's surprised me the most is the Xbox series S is capable of 120fps (at 1080p) and I've tried it with dirt 5, Doom eternal & Fortnite and what's impressed me the most is how consistent the little console is with 120fps because I fully expected to see frame drops but to my surprise the 120fps were just as consistent as my PS5 utilizing 120fps.
I can honestly say that the Xbox series S is one of the BEST consoles ever released simply because it's price to performance ratio is on point. you get some much for $299 that it's almost mind boggling. anyone on the fence I highly recommend the series S as it's seriously an amazing little BEAST! happy gaming ✌️

Ok, network engineer here. Been one for over 20 years. USB is rated to run external devices at 5v. The Series S has 3 USB ports that can support powering 5 V at 900 mA each. You dont make a device with USB ports and not expect to have them power devices. Microsoft sells things like external HD that are designed to run off the UBS ports power. I use a portable monitor with my Series S off my USB port while traveling.
Proper shut down is very important. Doing a hard reboot (improper shut down) should only be used when its your last resort. This sounds more like your problem to me. If thats what happened, that can be fixed. Tell MS what happened and their techs can fix it.
