We need original Xbox emulation on the series consoles! Then we'll have the ultimate Xbox experience all in one machine.
It's ironic that these system via emulation support more PS and Nintendo games then Xbox games not supported via backwards compatibility.

its very interesting but its bogged down by a locked OS, Xenia plays 360 games perfectly on my old i7-4770,12 gigs of ram and an rx 480, thats what I use anyhow for emulation and a computer like that costs half as much as a series s. problem is you cant use a series s or x online when its in dev mode and turning it back deletes everything. thats what really needs to be figured out or they end up locking dev mode out in a firmware update and you cant access dev mode anymore

@@xXRustyShacklefordXx you dont need vulkan for n64 emulation, its been running perfectly in directx for like 2 decades now. I have retroarch and Batocera and on a fast machine it literally makes zero difference. its always locked at 60 fps in vulkan,openGL or directX

If you don't have the monetary funds or development skill to contribute, you can contribute your time by assisting others with problems or helping create/improve documentation, stuff like that. And I'm sure the devs would be very happy if someone took care of the menial administrative bits for them

It only has OpenGL and Vulkan support. No DirectX.

I may add however that "ripping" games also works on a stock 360, simply by inserting a USB drive and installing the game to that drive instead of the 360's hard drive.
Sure, that may only apply to DVD games but in my case, I could backup all my games without to bother modding the system and thus not having to worry to get banned from XBL.

@@bigstv15 not on a stock xbox, you still need the disc for it to play. This person is simply talking about rather than installing to hdd, you rip it to a usb so you can play those on Series X without disc

Can confirm that works. If you have a HDD, unplug it that way all the 360 sees is your USB drive and uses the USB drive to rip the game to.
That's how i ripped my DDR Universe 2 disc since there were no NTSC ISO's of the game online.

What I find interesting about these UWP apps is that they are limited on how much of the hardware they can access. For instance, apps are limited to 1 GB or RAM and games are limited to 5 GB of RAM as UWPs. So you do have to keep your expectation of these sort of apps in perspective.
these are released as games using hidden links. used to be just run as apps in Dev mode iirc
There's guides on how to install these in retail mode. In retail mode they can utilise more of the console. That and it opens up the ability to use external storage for your games.
Kodi says there is 1.5GB of free ram on my Xbox one S and that is an app so this is wrong unless Kodi uses a virtual memory file on the HDD.

@@nathanmead140it used to be right at least and the Microsoft Learn website still says that (updated on January 18th). Maybe it's virtual memory but the fact there's 120 FPS when not even Microsoft Edge or any app that I know of has it is weird. Maybe it's running as a game?

Xbox One can emulate 360 just fine, but only the official emulator is up to snuff there.
I’ll surely use it to play delisted games on XBLA like X-Men Arcade, Simpsons Arcade, Godfather’s DLC and others. I’d buy them if possible, but now this is a good way to go.

Just the fact that the series X/S is only 2 years old and we have so much emulation software is very promising. I will love to see how far everything gets updated in 2 more years.

@@huklo6331 emu always moves on, forever onward on PC, and this work gets ported all over the place - the Series S (and X by extension) will get that good stuff while they sell well, but the affordable S will likely be one of those forever-boxes (or long term at least). Anyway, I assume you might be joking since all One software works on Series 1.

Microsoft did it again with Series S/X and made emulator beast !
That combination of developer mode and a good CPU (much better than the garbage jaguar CPUs of last generation) really works wonders. I don't own a series S/X console (because I have a very capable PC and I use a Steam Deck as my primary emulation device), but I would definitely consider getting one in a few years time as a living room emulation device. It feels like it's slowly becoming the PSP of home consoles.
Microsoft did nothing here, these emulators are made by gamers not MS.

@@vherostar Microsoft provided a easy solution to install said software and hardware that’s up to task to run said hardware 🤨
@@vherostar yeah Microsoft didn't make the emulators, but they are being cool about it and not attempting to shut it down. The community is doing a better job at backwards compatible gaming then sony or Nintendo.

The Xbox Series S continues to punch so far above its price tag. This recent surge in emulator development has been such a boon for that little [X]box.

I mean, after all you're lucky enough to have access to a disc drive that can read Xbox and Xbox 360's proprietary discs right out of the box, might as well use it. lol

Original Xbox architecture is harder to emulate, but maybe we will see it in the future.
@@XfromDarkHorse xemu is getting pretty good. Not as good as dolphin or pcsx2, but it's 79% playable, 3% perfect.

The Series Consoles just keep improving and becoming my favorite Consoles easily. So much value in being able to emulate games across many generations and platforms. Can't wait till Xenia increases and I can hopefully play PGR and older forza titles along with many more.

Love the scene progression recently. Now we really need a standalone N64 emulator for the Series S/X. Retroarch's offerings are full of random garbage and issues that, say, standalone PJ64 or Mupen64Plus would not necessarily have.
Was playing with this in retail mode on my XSX on Saturday night. Super fun.

I absolutely want to get into emulation because this shit fascinates me. I have a Series S ready to go when I do try to dip my toes into emulation. But I'm too much of a dunce that I may accidentally miss one step and somehow set my Series S on fire.
You can do it , I thought it would be daunting but there's plenty of information out there and step by step guides.
2 days ago, late at night, I tried Xenia the first time on my normal Gaming PC, so not perfectly matching the topic. But, the piece of Software is awesome. The CPU/GPU usage is so low, for instance Gear of War 2/3 are running so smoothly at 60fps with best Settings I could think of.
It's so much fun with an Xbox Controller, I was shocked.
Mmm looking like I know what box I'll eventually buy to replay all the worthwhile exclusives. At least until I could build a "all in one emulation pc"
Just so you know, you can dump Xbox 360 games on a stock Xbox 360. For disc games, it's as simple as pressing X on the disc menu, clicking Install, and selecting a USB hard drive as the destination. For digital games, you can copy (or in some cases move, dump, and then move back) them directly to a USB device. From there, you can use something like GOD2ISO for disc games or full game downloads, and XBLA games can be used without any conversion whatsoever.
That's amazing seeing these old 20 -30 fps games running at 60 frames
A little off topic but I've been very curious why there are no OG Xbox emulators for android/arm devices? Is it because of the major hurdle from x86 to arm? I know the exagear windows emulator can play decently with windows based games from the same era so I would think emulating the OG Xbox would be easier then those full operating systems

They just today added a new frontend UI to xenia UWP, its also Xenia Canary so the list of supported games is much bigger than the normal Xenia since its kinda a little outdated and canary is a more of a beta version, so hopefully you can make a video about the new UI version at some point.

Armored Core 4 and FA never became backwards compatible so this is an absolute win
Dolphin is already great, and so is XBSX2 . so i am really looking forward to seeing Xenia and flycast improve, and hopefully seeing xemu, RXBPS3, Cemu, yuzu, all come over in time ; once some of them get dx12 decoders)
I do not think Yuzu will ever be usable here. I'll print out and eat my comment if this ever happens
@@Luxocell I suggest soft paper, makes it easier to swallow.
Unlikely for a lot of those to get DX support. It's just a waste of time for the most part when vulkan already works fine. The only other big one that could have a possibility of coming over is Citra for 3DS. I believe it has DirectX support already.

Vulkan already works fine on devices that support vulkan, but dx12 is in fact more robust than vulkan AND a fast-growing segment of dvices cannot run vulkan (any windows on arm or Enterprise S system for edample, And installing on retail mode on consoles represents a HUGE opportunity for growth & money for the developers.)
@@wanderingwobb6300 Unfortunately, Citra doesn't have support for DIrectX, and it'll probably never get support for it because CItra is on multiple platforms (Windows, macOS, and Linux) of which only Windows supports DirectX, so it wouldn't be worthwhile. Citra _is_ open source, so someone or a team could possibly make DirectX happen. It would also need to be ported to UWP though after that.
The Xbox Series S/X is going to be one of those consoles for the ages.
I wish so badly that they'd get vita and ps3 emulation working on it, but I know those emulators have almost no games working on it even on the PC versions. Also if Microsoft could somehow get a series S into handheld form, wow that would be the dream.
PS3 emulation is actually very far in and a lot of games run very well now. It's just that the ps3 uses architecture that other consoles don't use, so I'm pretty sure it's not possible to emulate unless it's on pc.

This is awesome news. I've been messing with Xenia/Xemu on my PC and both have come a long way in different aspects. The fact that 360 could live on through the series S/X is astounding. I'm hoping that the original Xbox finds it's way there eventually! I know there's backwards compatibility with some games, but not all of them. Maybe I'll pick one up myself as a dedicated emulation machine in the near future 🤔

Nothing is impossible, there just has to be a group of people willing to work on it. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a Cemu port down the line, the system could probably handle it
Maybe one day but for that to happen I'd think they'd have to get it running more stably on PC. Sony has always been a headache for emulator developers and from what over read the PS3 is no less of a headache than past generations. Hopefully they get it figured out and running faster and more stably and port it to the Xbox. Playing PS3 exclusives on the Xbox has a nice ring to it.
Who knows? It's possible but it might take awhile. The PlayStation 3 is a pain to emulate. The Cell architecture that the PS3 has is complicated and a pain in the ass.

It's the hardest system to emulate by far, it took a decade of trial and error to get half of the PS3 library playable, but I think once the emulation code is optimized and more efficient it might be possible

That's great, not only for playing non-BC titles on Series S but also the delisted titles that were abandoned. All we need is an OG Xbox emulator and Series S can play ALL Xbox games!

Very interesting. I wasn't planning to get an Xbox this generation but it is getting harder and harder to keep that up. As an emulation machine it is getting in a league of it's own.
Can't get it to run.. xenia is frustrating. All of these comments preaching but it doesn't work. Have the games pulled and extracted correctly. Added the updated file for canary. Launching the default exe. Have tried both FM4 and MCLA. Absolutely neither game works

Will be interesting to see how this would run on my series x in the future when it is more optimized for the series x hardware. For now I will run xenia canary on my 12900k and 4090.
This build has a rough compatibility list, but many games that are not BC run at full speed. I'll say that even after taking all the steps to decrypt dlcs and updates, they still have spotty compatibility even if the game itself works well.
Xbox is definitely fast becoming the best console at the moment for gamers. It's got everything. Maybe even the PS4 emulator down the road??

Unless I missed something, 360 games won’t be purchasable on 360 consoles but will still be available for purchase on Xbox one and Series consoles.

Hey MVG. Love these emulation videos. I myself already modded my og Xbox and just recently acquired a Wii that I will be modding. In terms of Xenia on PC, how good does it run and what is compatibility like atm? Thank you for your time.
As far I know it's 60/40 split due to the different builds they have currently (master & canary), the two builds seem to be better at playing a game better then the other like Red Dead Redemption or Fable 2 for example, those games currently run really really well at the state of development for the emulator build's, I'm using a Zen 2, Ryzen 7 3700x CPU from 2019 and it runs smooth well over 30fps with some little hitches and stuff but that's the only games I've tried, but I can Imagine with the current Zen 4 & Intel Ks cpus plus the the upcoming 7000X3D Zen 4 processors it will run super decent.

The best thing about Xenia is having the games that aren't backwards compatible, and that's a good thing (for example most of Cave shooters that were left behind)
Would the Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena work via this method. I just want to play Escape from Butcher Bay and unfortunately the Xbox version is lost forever it seems.
