I'm so glad interest continues in this scene- it felt like it died quickly when retail mode was no longer an option despite dev mode! I've attained a CRT since and I've always had og hardware around so I've mostly shifted to that, but there are definitely cases where I don't have that and am happy to use my series x and continue to see interest in this cool function it hides!
if that thung can, the ps5 will too, it is basically the same console, it would mean just emulation and legality limitations, where xbox would get in trouble for being this careless
Wow, this had made a lot of improvements. As someone who has an Xbox One X with an internal SSD, the emulation scene on dev mode was 1 of 3 reasons I bought my Series S and love it more than the One X (Destiny 2 at 60fps, and the $150 price tag from Verizon being the other 2 reasons). Last year before we moved into our bigger place, I had a minimalist gaming set up in the living room with only a few consoles hooked up. The Series S with emulation became my primary method of playing Playstation 2 games, as well as everything else. For anyone wondering how the Series S is over the One X on Xbox One games, it depends on the games you want to play. Halo MCC is dependent if you want to play at 4K or 120hz. Destiny 2 is definitely better at 1080p 60fps on Series S vs 4K 30fps on the One X. PubG is better on Series S despite being the base Xbox One version cause of the 60fps boost, and its a MUCH smoother 60fps than One X. Mortal Kombat 11 is about the same. Apex Legends is almost the same but definitely a more stable 60fps on Series S. And OMG, Xbox 360 games that support FPS Boost like Gears of War 3, they seriously feel like playing brand new games!!!
@rontaylor6136 I completely disagree. I like my Series S more. But it's also depending on one's preferences and the games they play, and the displays they have. The games that I mainly play (Destiny 2, Apex Legends, Halo MCC, PubG, Mortal Kombat 11), Series S with the better and more stable framerate is better.
Thank you, MVG! Now all of Dark Forces/Jedi Knight games (in one or another form) are playable on Xbox! Dark Forces 2 has been missing on consoles for decades! Would love to see some other PC classics, like Mafia 1 (should have been included in Mafia Remake), AvP 2000 (has a port on PS Vita) and Fallout 1/2.
I already had a bunch of emu’s installed on my series x dev mode, thanks so much for sharing all these updates! I’ll definitely check out these ports, and emulators. I’m excited to see the citrus emulator I saw for a second when you scrolled down the dev store

Not an emulator, but it's emulator adjacent. Someone ported Ship of Harkinian to the Xbox, which is that really great Ocarina of Time PC port. It might only be hosted on the HarborMasters64 Discord right now, not sure, but I think it's worth spreading the word regardless.

My issue isn't the fee to activate Dev Mode, but whether Dev Mode will even be available in a many years from now when all Xbox Series Consoles' online functionality have become completely unavailable. Hopefully the console would have been fully cracked open by then.
Yeah, Xbox can "wake up" tomorrow and shutdown dev mode entirely. It's something that can disappear at any point because it's fully controlled by Microsoft. This is why jailbreaking is important, it gives the power back to the user, no one can take my homebrew and backups out of my PS4 Pro.
If Microsoft removes the Dev Mode, the community backlash will be huge. Remember what happened with the PS3. Sony removed OtherOS, and then, the community quickly hacked the console.
@@system64_MCpretty sure MS doesn’t care about backlash. Windows literally spies on its users and the customers allow it. Linux is the way, Microsoft is a terrible company.
Unless Xbox wants to burn any good will they still have, they should hold off on something like that as long as possible. As evident with the many comments on this video, many people either bought a series s or are considering buying one solely for this. Considering how poor xbox sales have been, microsoft should just be happy with any traffic they can get.
It got patched within hours, but yes that would be a great video, as until now XB1 has been pretty much unhackable until now, compared to the PS4 and PS5 which have already been jailbroken.
I’ve been playing 3ds games on the modified retroarch. Aside from some stuttering, it’s incredible. If I’m not mistaken the main dev is currently making a dedicated citra uwp, so here’s to hoping we can have better smooth 3ds emulation.
After watching this video I looked online and grabbed a used complete in box series s for $90 usd from Craigslist! I gotta get this loaded up with emulators for my kid! Thanks, MVG!
It's well worth it, they go on sale in the states for as little as $180 sometimes. As it stands, the emulation is absolutely amazing. Some GameCube, PS2 and Wii games can hit 4k with no issues, but all of them can definitely render at 1440p without a hitch.
I wouldn't unless you know it will be worth the effort. I never got retroarch to work right in devmode after trying for hours. Much easier to use emulators on pc. I regret giving them that $20 for devmode.
This makes me SOOOO happy. Thank you for yet another helpful, meaningful, well produced video. I’ve been meaning to sit down and hammer out setting emulation on my Series S, since all my systems have been collecting dust as of late. I stopped when retail mode died last year, but then I tried dev mode a few months ago. I ended up not following through because of the lack of updates to many apps. I’m glad there has been a shake up that’s led to devs wanting to update their apps. The native apps like Dark Forces 2 and Doom 3 really excites me, the same way Mario 64 excited me on 3DS did a few years ago.
It’s a ways away. Thats the emulator that will probably suffer the most for using a wrapper. Plus that shader compilation is basically the ult stress test for a PC, it will thermal ceiling a Ryzen CPU quick.
Nintendo Switch emulation on Xbox Series consoles would be a dream come true, even better than PS3 emulation. Only problem is something like Yuzu or Ryujinx would have to be rebuilt entirely from the ground up in order to run on Xbox. It'd technically be possible if someone actually did it. Edit: wait with this mesa opengl/vulkan implementation, then maybe it's now legitimately possible for someone to get Yuzu or Ryujinx running on Xbox consoles. Citra and 3DS emulation was previously unaccessible on Xbox due to the lack of OpenGL and Vulkan support, but now the emulator is running on Series X/S. Fingers crossed someone manages to find a way to bring Yuzu over using Mesa as well. Playing Zelda Breath of the Wild at 60 FPS on Xbox would be insane.
@@DrGreenThumbNZLas far as I know, mesa is essentially the OpenGL/vulkan implementation, so this library should support Vulkan as well, leaving the door open for both RPCS3, Ryujinx and specially Cemu 😳

I'm a real hardware guy but when I bought dev mode for my Series X it truly changed my mind for the better. I even bought an SSD with a USB adapter for my game roms.
@@randomgamingin144p I suspected this at first but his account is 11 years old versus theirs, both 5 days' new. And his profile pic doesn't make me gag.
I noticed that RetroArch on the Series X could access and read all files from PS2 discs just as if it were a directory (I tried it with San Andreas). Would be awesome if in the future we could use PCSX2's "play from disc" capability on the Series X!
It'll just wear and tear the system quicker. I understand the excitement of it as a novelty but I prefer to make minimal use of the disc drive. On Xbox 360 I always install the entire game, so all the disc drive does is boot it up. Longer lasting console.
While I have PS5, PS3, RGH Xbox 360, and just got Xbox One S for very cheap price, I've been thinking about picking up Xbox Series S. The problem for me is simple - it does not have a disc drive. And that for me is a dealbreaker because I'd love to play Xbox One/ Xbox 360 games that I can buy for cheap and have Backwards Compatibility. With Series S I can't do this, it solely relies on digital purchases/gamepass. This brings me hope that maybe, someday, I'll buy a used Series S and use it for emulation only. For time being, I'll just use my One S for Xbox 360/Xbox One physical games and 360 for my 360 games that I can't run via BC.
Series X second hand might be a consideration for you down the line if you want to keep your discs and even get not just a performance bump but on some 360 and xone games a res jump as well.

Imagine if DynaRes 2.0 was ported over to the Xbox Series consoles, and worked over Direct-video mode, this would be amazing for authentic retro emulation, and a great alternative to RGB-Pi and MiSTer, the best thing about the Xbox consoles is they have far smaller OS footprints, meaning less overheads, meaning lower latency, which means higher input fidelity, no in the same league as MiSTer, or the upcoming Replay OS with DynaRes 2.0, but if that could be ported or a fork of it, so that you could use an Xbox for emulation over direct-video with fast & accurate video/audio timings, it could be a brilliant, user-friendly way to play all the best classics, as there really isn't a simple way to get low latency retro game performance on an X86 or X64 OS, it can be done, but it's not a novice endeavour, you have to strip out all the processes you can without destabilizing the OS, setup and configure fast USB encoding and polling, make sure you are using a legacy BIOS and a GPU with an analogue BIOS and DAC (RAMDAC), use RAMDISK, configure RGBHV to RGBS 15Khz if using a CRT or configuring shaders and scanlines if using an OLED or Arcade IPS, it's a long-drawn-out process to get a decent experience that matches or comes close to the real thing as intended, and the Xbox could make that a much easier process, especially if someone figures out low latency controls and video/audio with it. My hope is though, that we eventually get a hybrid FPGA/ASIC/RISC-C/X86 all-in-one console one day, that has sub 1ms latency, reference audio & video quality ad timings, and is plug & play, kind of what the Polly mega promised but never came close to delivering, MiSTer gives us this up to 5th generation games, RGB-Pi on a Pi 5 gives us a halfway decent latency performance thanks to DynaRes 1.0 for up to 6th gen, I think the best combination will be an FPGA for handling all the cores for everything up to 6th gen, and ARM64 for running everything else, or would X64 be better, Apple's Silicon ARM64 SoCs have proven to be absolute powerhouses for emulation, it's whichever architecture has the best parallel processing performance, I would also think this perfect hybrid console would have a GPU also for when brute force rasterization is needed for larger resolutions and increasing internal rendering fidelity, as well as a dedicated scaler IC or ASIC for running BFI, scanline, shaders and so on. I'd also like to finally see a next gen, sub 4ms, zero jitter wireless controller tech developed, perhaps using beam forming or laser sight frequency communication, 100 thousand times faster than RF or WIFI, and the perfect candidate for next generation wireless gamepads that will finally give us even better performance than wired controllers.

@@Vict0rFrankenstein But doesn't RPCS3 also use Vulkan and the UWP Mesa port has a Vulkan translation for DX12? Well, in any case the memory limit for UWP apps probably will turn this impossible anyway; sad :(
For older emulators, it's not likely. I'm talking at least GameCube and earlier as far as Nintendo is concerned. Not sure of the technicalities but Wii and Wii U MIGHT be OK to get away with, as dumping the BIOS isn't fiddling with any encryption circumvention. There's legal case law in the US, thanks to Sony V. Bleem, that makes emulation legal. What's getting into gray areas with newer emulation (ie Switch) is the fact that encryption keys stored in the hardware are required to get the games to run. Getting these keys and using them in emulation has not been tested in court against the DMCA and may or may not survive such a test as this bumps against the "circumvention" parts of the DMCA. This all being said, there's a TON of legit reasons to run emulators; it's not all piracy. Just one example of many: There's a huge active development community for the original NES, SNES, SMS, and Genesis hardware. Emulators allow a significant reduction in code prototype testing than having to build the rom, flash it to a prototyping cart, and then find hardware that can run the cart. Also when I'm looking at features to add to a game I'm developing, it's helpful to just insta-load a ROM from a dump of one of the games in my library that used a similar feature and use Mesen's debugger to see how something was done for that game and get insight into what I'm working on.
If Microsoft made some official wrapper API that allows older DX to DX12 UWP and support mesa I would love for them to see them support PC store fronts and just allow any PC game to run like it’s a steam deck, even if they force gamepass ultimate to be required it would be so fucking awesome to run some steam EA indie games on this thing
Right now ita almost impossible to buy dev mode ... Many users are reporting that, me included since January of 2024, even the page has changed but always throws errors about the banks. At bank side with their help the fault is from Microsoft

Got my hands on two decrypted backwards compatibility games. I extracted them and ran the package on Xenia. I'm currently trying to replace and see if it runs, but I'm running into trouble when building the manifest. I think I should use Windows 8.1 SDK MakeAppx not 10/11 SDK.

Not sure where you heard that about PS3 but it isn't true at all. Even an $80 12100F can run PS3 games. Probably won't be lucky enough to have AVX512 anymore so I'd recommend at least a 12400 now.

'Here you want to tinker? give us a nominal fee that is largely used to reimburse anything that needs to be shipped and we will give you a way to toggle the console between dev and customer modes. Dev mode lets you do a lot but bars you from running commerical content. Otherwise. Go. Nuts.' I love that the series S does that. Here pay a one time fee largely used for customer tracking and bam. While I do most things on my pc, it is a toaster that barely plays Xbox One/PS4 era games at lowest settings, so my Series X is my emulation machine and honestly it does a great job at it and for some people is a very good option.
For a 229€ machine, it's a great emulation machine that is capable of emulating up to the 6th generation of consoles on top of being able to officially play some OG Xbox/360 titles natively + gamepass + modern games. My problem isn't the cost of the dev mode, but conceptually the fact that it has to be unlocked. That means when the servers are off, you can't use dev mode on a 2nd hand console you pick up. It also means MS can probably kill dev mode at any time just like Sony did with the PS3's Linux capability. It feels too tethered to MS for me. A mini-PC has similar power, no? And it's truly open.
You can link your dev account to 3 devices, you only need online to switch into dev mode after that you can stay in it, the licence you pay between £1/£20 lasts around 80 years
@@AnotherAspect-hg9mp I should have rephrased. I mean specifically for emulation. I know it won't be playing helldivers or cyberpunk or whatever at the same quality, but for emulating the systems here, I'd think mini PC's with a 7000 series or 13th gen are pretty similar in terms of capability as emulation on something like the S here.
@@danprice142 Lasts 80 years or whenever MS decides to kill it, whichever comes first. They may need to refund you your money, but they won't have a problem doing that. Why do you think they even charge? Barely anybody is going to be using Dev mode in the grand scheme of things, and it's a 1 time thing. Not a lot of money to be made there. The reason they do it is so that they can link it to your cloud/dev account. This means though that once they throw the switch, you're not unlocking anything. And it further means they can undo it remotely. We've already seen this with the PS3. They killed the ability to run Linux with a software update, and they refunded people money in the class action lawsuit if it meant closing up access. Was worth it to them. You buy a SNES today and it does everything an SNES did in 1994. You buy a series S in 2054 you will not be able to unlock dev mode. It will be very funny if the Xbox series consoles can run PS3 and the ps5 can't
With latest rumor mill that Sony themselves getting problem with the PS3 emulator on PS5, this could happen.
Keep dreaming. PS3 emulation affects the entire world, not just Sony. There's nothing magical about Xbox or people doing homebrew emulation on it
if that thung can, the ps5 will too, it is basically the same console, it would mean just emulation and legality limitations, where xbox would get in trouble for being this careless

One x is more enjoyable experience than series s with a 4k tv
@rontaylor6136 I completely disagree. I like my Series S more.
But it's also depending on one's preferences and the games they play, and the displays they have.
The games that I mainly play (Destiny 2, Apex Legends, Halo MCC, PubG, Mortal Kombat 11), Series S with the better and more stable framerate is better.
Thank you for keeping us up to date! This helps the scene continue to be vibrant.
Thank you, MVG! Now all of Dark Forces/Jedi Knight games (in one or another form) are playable on Xbox! Dark Forces 2 has been missing on consoles for decades!

After watching this video I looked online and grabbed a used complete in box series s for $90 usd from Craigslist! I gotta get this loaded up with emulators for my kid! Thanks, MVG!
I was just watching the previous videos yesterday. I’ve been considering picking an S up solely for emulation.
It's well worth it, they go on sale in the states for as little as $180 sometimes. As it stands, the emulation is absolutely amazing. Some GameCube, PS2 and Wii games can hit 4k with no issues, but all of them can definitely render at 1440p without a hitch.
You totally should!

Can't wait for Xbox Series consoles to get "PS3 Backwards Compatibility" with RPCS3 in some years
It’s a ways away.
There is no Vulcan support, this is why there isn't even citra/3ds on Xbox

Until certain brands go full "How DARE you!" and strike the emulators down...
We're looking at you, Nintendo

If it had a disc drive and actually cost $299 in Canada, I'd have gotten one. But without the disc drive it's useless to me.
For the price no. It would have to ve a lot more expensive.
You can link your dev account to 3 devices, you only need online to switch into dev mode after that you can stay in it, the licence you pay between £1/£20 lasts around 80 years
@@AnotherAspect-hg9mp I should have rephrased. I mean specifically for emulation.
