This project was to mark 100 years since World War One began (1914). Every year people here buy a paper poppy to wear in the lapel of their coats or jackets. They buy it to remember ALL those in the military who fought for us to keep us free. The money raised goes to an organisation called the Royal British Legion which helps our wonderful ex sailors, soldiers, airmen or their families if they are in need.
Each year we hold a Festival of Remembrance on the Saturday, closest to World War One's Armistice Day - the 11th day of the 11th month. On Sunday, the next day, people gather together in every village, town and city around their local Memorials and hold a Service of Remembrance for those that gave their lives for our freedom. In London a National Service of Remembrance is held in Whitehall too. It is attended by many thousands of people, including Representatives of the 56 countries of the Commonwealth. They each lay a wreath of poppies. Both the Saturday's Festival of Remembrance and the Service of Remembrance in London is broadcast on National TV so that people, who cannot get to the events, have the chance to watch and be part of it, through the medium of TV. Thank you for your lovely Reaction. All the best.
